Half Game Out: Beauty, Eh? Yanks-Jays Gamer IX

The New York Yankees left the Bronx for a visit to friendly Ontario having swept the Royals and lifted themselves into a tie with Seattle for second and within a half-game of Detroit for top spot in the wild card race.  Seventy-four runs in the seven games played from last Sunday to yesterday is mind-boggling.

New York has won six of the last seven games Andy Pettitte has taken the mound.  During that stretch of 37.2 innings, Pettitte has given up 19 runs and is averaging a bit shy of a K per inning, though he has given up 45 hits and 13 walks over that stretch.  He’s on the bump today as Jesse Litsch gets the ball for Toronto.  Litsch appeared only once against the Bombers, who roughed him up for five early runs, sending him packing in the first inning.  Today’s early affair is the first of three games at the Rogers Centre, with Clemens facing Towers tomorrow and Wang vs. Halladay on Wednesday.

After tonight’s results in Detroit, the Bombers my find themselves sitting atop the race for the AL wild card, which will have happened much more quickly than most would have imagined should the topic have been raised a month ago.  Lineups follow, comment away.

  • I would have started Betemit instead of Phillips against the left-hander, but overall the Yanks are fielding a pretty hot line-up.

    Bozo August 6, 2007, 1:08 pm
  • Damon singles, Jeter F8, Abreu GIDP, end of one.

    Bozo August 6, 2007, 1:19 pm
  • I have been MIA the last few days..Not sure if this was mentioned but Jim Brower was called up to replace Mike Myers who was released.

    John - YF (Trisk) August 6, 2007, 1:28 pm
  • Melkman triples! Damon brings him in with a ground ball.

    Bozo August 6, 2007, 1:55 pm
  • wow, i didn’t realize that about myers. makes sense though, he’s been reeeeally ineffective lately, or so it has seemed. though he’s been better than farnsworth.

    nyara August 6, 2007, 2:00 pm
  • We released Myers?
    Leche!

    YF August 6, 2007, 2:10 pm
  • Melky and Damon with back to back singles.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 2:31 pm
  • Jeter out on a pitch though. Grumbles.

    Anonymous August 6, 2007, 2:32 pm
  • This anon thing is really annoying lately, is it just me?

    Lar August 6, 2007, 2:32 pm
  • John Mac with a lead off double. Where are the hot bats?

    Lar August 6, 2007, 2:36 pm
  • Reed Johnson walks, so two on, no outs.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 2:40 pm
  • the Yankee bats only seem to be “hot” against the Royals, the Daughters of the American Revolution varsity softball team, and other clubs of that caliber

    mp August 6, 2007, 2:42 pm
  • Double steal not good. Strike out is good.
Then Wells hit an infield single off the glove of ARod, and now it’s a 3-1 game.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 2:45 pm
  • AP actually struck out the side, but too bad one run scores, partially because of the double steal. Let’s go Yanks!

    Lar August 6, 2007, 2:54 pm
  • Here come the Yanks.
Abreu walks, ARod follows with a single. Downs comes in and gives up a single to Matsui, ARod to third, Abreu scores.
No outs, Posada just needs a groundball to tie the game.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:05 pm
  • Litsch is done after 92 pitches. AP with 96 and might go another inning.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:06 pm
  • The captcha is back. Booo.
Posada strikes out after starting ahead 3-1. Now a DP does not score a run.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:07 pm
  • Cano Can do! Doubles in both runs to make it a 4-3 game. Still only 1 out.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:08 pm
  • Andy grounds out, Cano to third, let’s see if the hot Melk deliver another hit.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:12 pm
  • Melky delivers an insurance run, and then JD grounds out. 5-3 Yanks.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:18 pm
  • I’m slightly behind because of the captcha – I post and alt-tab out.. =)
    Hill strikes out.
    Thigpen singles.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:19 pm
  • On a side note – what happened to Overbay? I remember a year or two back, he was a hot commodity in fantasy baseball! Now he’s batting 8th..

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:20 pm
  • how about cano and the melkster. el duo dynamico es muy caliente!

    YF August 6, 2007, 3:22 pm
  • Overbay strikes out, but Thigpen steals second. What the hey? Wasn’t AP one of the best (if not the best) at holding runners?

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:22 pm
  • Lar – tell that to Aaron Hill – didn’t he steal home off AP this year?

    rootbeerfloat August 6, 2007, 3:24 pm
  • John Mac walks on 4 pitches. Because we love walking the #9 hitter to get to #1 hitter.
Jim Brower, who I’ve never heard of until John brought it up, is now pitching for the Yankees.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:24 pm
  • rbf – that’s right. Maybe Toronto knows something we don’t know! I was only referring to this particular game, but now that you mention it..

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:25 pm
  • Wow… now you get to play teams that play 500 baseball or better. Red sox are going to kill you in the the august series. If you score 10 runs the whole weeked that would be amazing. Pitching dupes hitting. Yankees have wang, that’s it. Can’t wait to see the “Rocket” in Fenway, he’s gonna poop his pants.

    SoxNation August 6, 2007, 3:29 pm
  • That didn’t take long. “What’s your name again? Brower? Welcome to the club. NOW GET IN THERE.”

    YF August 6, 2007, 3:31 pm
  • Johnson lines out. Jeets is up.
Here’s a friendly reminder to not feed the trolls!

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:32 pm
  • YF – I’ll bet he is half hoping that was the only batter he’s going to face so that he can keep that ERA!

    rootbeerfloat August 6, 2007, 3:36 pm
  • 114 pitches, 6 innings, 3 runs…
    With this offense that works.
    Let’s hold ‘em boys!
As for Myers, he can be traded in the next 10 days, he was designated for assignment. Also Joba couldn’t pitch today, so I think Brower is a short term call up. Look for Joba or Edwar for this weekend.

    John - YF (Trisk) August 6, 2007, 3:37 pm
  • The Yanks goes down 1-2-3.
Brower stays in the game. Probably hands 8th inning over the Farns, gives me a heart attack before Mo comes in.
Rios singles off Brower, and I am promptly shown I’m wrong as Vizcaino comes in. Strikes out Wells.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:48 pm
  • The really really slow Frank Thomas grounds into a welcoming double play to get out of the inning.
    End of 7, it’s 5-3 Yanks.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:49 pm
  • Thanks Lar. ESPN Gamecast is all over the place today. 5 minutes ago it was 6-3 ny. now it’s 5-3. hope this is not a trend…..

    YF August 6, 2007, 3:55 pm
  • The Yanks go down pseudo 1-2-3 – a line out, a HBP, and then a Cano DP.
7.5, it’s 5-3 Yanks. Viz still pitching, and now started the dangerous Glaus with 3 straight balls, but come back to get Glaus to fly out to CF.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 3:58 pm
  • ouch

    rootbeerfloat August 6, 2007, 3:59 pm
  • Hill makes it a 5-4 game. Viz is still in, hopefully he stays out of trouble enough for Farns not to come in. Gosh.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:02 pm
  • Zaun grounds out. One more out before Mo time.
Of course, it would also be nice if the Yanks add some insurance runs.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:03 pm
  • Overbay walks with two outs, and Stairs will come in to try bring the run in. Viz still pitching.
Stairs then got in by a pitch inside. Two on, two outs.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:08 pm
  • So the #9 hitter gets on base again. RJ in.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:10 pm
  • RJ grounds out to finally end the inning. Let’s go top of the lineup!

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:12 pm
  • Wow. Eight hits, five walks, just four runs. Who do these Blue Jays think they are? The Red Sox?

    Paul SF August 6, 2007, 4:14 pm
  • The Yanks go down 1-2-3. Here comes the Mo!

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:18 pm
  • Well the Jays have exactly whom they want up there in the ninth — Rios, Wells and Thomas.

    Paul SF August 6, 2007, 4:20 pm
  • Rios strikes out. Wells strikes out. Now only Thomas stands between the Yanks and a win.

    Anonymous August 6, 2007, 4:25 pm
  • Anon was me.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:27 pm
  • Thomas strikes out and the Yanks get a 1-run win!

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:27 pm

    YF August 6, 2007, 4:28 pm
  • Does he come with spell-check?

    Paul SF August 6, 2007, 4:29 pm
  • Link is a spam post.

    Lar August 6, 2007, 4:31 pm
  • I thought if he meant Joba and misspelled it, but turns out jobachamberlain.com is equally not a Web site.

    Paul SF August 6, 2007, 4:34 pm
  • There is indeed now a jobachamberlain.com.
