If you play the game of baseball, a dispiriting game like Sunday's — which leaves the one sure thing you've had all season very much in doubt — can be erased in the preparation for today's game.
Not so for the fans, who have hashed and rehashed every subpar Josh Beckett fastball and curve for the past 20 hours or so. It's easy to forget that the Sox are still technically a playoff team. So they continue their efforts to fend off the Rangers and Rays with a set against their paler counterparts.

Man it’s good to hear Remy.
Woah, how on earth was Pedroia safe? Oh wow, check out that replay… kudos to the ump watching it to the end, instead of just calling him out cause the throw beat him.
Though he was still out by half a foot.
Joe C, Obie say Pedey was out.
Rays up 3-0 in the first inning.
Off Halladay.
I’ve got that good Bucky feeling tonight.
Or not. Bucky gets a man on, then gets excessively deliberate.
Why hasn’t he figured out that when he gets THAT slow that he’s not effective?
Two walks and a slow-dribbler, and now it’s 1-0 badsox.
Craptastic.
IBM, you jinxed him!
Alexi. It’s about to be 4-0.
Bay scores on the run-down, but Drew is out. I guess that’s okay, trading an out for a run there, but what the hell is up with our baserunning tonight?
Shit, 4-1.
“technically”
not for long.
The biggest wolf cry on earth right now is the one from YFs touting how dangerous the Sox are. Please. This team is a threat to nobody.
Hey, Toronto is now beating the Rays 5-3!
Bases loaded for Papi!
3-0 with the bases loaded. I say take three straight strikes, with Bay on deck.
HOLY SHIT! Ortiz swinging on 3-0, and dribbles it down the first base line. Contreras bobbles it though, and everyone is safe. That was a Cano-esque error.
I kid, I kid.
Wow. I will take it though.
Haha!!!!!!!
Another run scores on the walk.
MIKE TIBERIUS LOWELL! 7-4 GOODSOX!
Wow…

A+ reverse-jinx right here
The best part about mlb.tv is that we get the game feed, but not the other NESN stuff. So for instance, they were talking with the host of Pocket Money during the inning there, and after the host left they went to a 15 second field-report from Heidi Watney. However, my feed didn’t show that, and instead had the audio of Remy and DO giggling in the booth and making fun of Fitzy, the Pocket Money host.
That was an epic meltdown by Contreras. Spec-f*cking-tacular.
OMG, wha’d they say, Ath?
9-4 Crimson. This is an excellent chance to eat their bullpen. Offense has really been awesome the past week.
Devine, Remy said: “Fitzy was a little, uhh, wound up”. And DO said something along the lines of “Yeah, I wonder what else he tries to sell on the street.” Hilarious in either case.
Now if pitching could catch up to the hitting, we could have ourselves a ball team.
The iPhone app Sportstacular is ahead of the TV, that’s kind of amazing. Although I don’t like the moment being spoiled.
Shit, TB is up again, 8-6.
Had to run errands earlier this evening. What a relief to come back and see this score. I hope Clay can keep them down here.
Hee hee, thanks Ath. That’s cool.
“Now if pitching could catch up to the hitting, we could have ourselves a ball team.”
Brad Penny not starting ever again (crossing fingers) is a great beginning.
Aw, fuck.
Shit. Buchholz gives up a 3-run homer, and is consequently pulled. Ram^2 time
Ugh, forget I ever said anything about feeling relief.
Like I said: not a threat. The bullpen is going to be utterly gassed
in about three weeks.
Off-topic, but Johan Santana is likely heading for elbow surgery. That sound you hear is Epstein and Cashman breathing humongous sighs of relief.
Eh. In the Yankees series, as the regulars go, they threw Saito for 2 innings, Delcarmen for 1, Ram-Ram for 1, and Bard for 1 (also Gonzalez and Bowden). I don’t think the bullpen is in trouble on that score. Plus Lester’s going tomorrow.
Nice pick, Youk. A-Gon, you’re supposed to be here for your defense, bro.
Agreed, Andrew. Though you hate to see that happen to a player of Johan’s calibre.
Agreed Devine, especially since Beckett went 8 last night and we have Lester and Wakefield coming up.
I, uhh, didn’t mean to say agreed twice.
3 innings to go, let’s get some insurance boys. When was the last time Papelbon pitched?
I’ll answer my own question: Papelbon last threw 1.1 innings on Aug 18. Before that was 1.0 on the 14th, and before that 1.0 on the 11th. So he’ll probably get used tonight no matter what.
Error puts Ellsbury on 1st. Get the record please? Right here?
Pedroia singles, which lowers the chances of the record getting broken. Unless we get a double steal here…
The two walks are infuriating. I thought maybe they should have pulled him after he walked Podsednik.
Not watching b-ball tonight as Yanks are off, but just to say, if someone large on the Sox were to manufacture a play at the plate so as to demolish Pierzynski, I’d be all for it.
Where did anyone hear about surgery for Johan? All I heard is elbow discomfort, skip next start, and see team doctor. Could be terrible but could also be minor. Was there more than that??
TB has put it away in the 9th. 12-7 tuberculosis.
For a sec, I wondered why they pulled Oki after the 1 out, but after looking at his splits, I can see why they pulled him.
And Bard hits Konerko, of course. Does that work for you, IH?
Shit, I meant to say Pierzynski, because I thought it was him (they have a similar facial structure). So now I just seem like a complete fool.
Wow, are we really going to make this interesting guys?
IH, everyone around the Mets, even Johan, expect the news not to be good. In any case, I don’t think you’ll see Santana again this year.
Phew, escaped.
Not watching b-ball tonight as Yanks are off, but just to say, if someone large on the Sox were to manufacture a play at the plate so as to demolish Pierzynski, I’d be all for it.
I hate AJ too, IH. So does most of the league.
Hey, insurance run from Drew. Nice.
J.D. Woo! Thanks for the breathing room, pal. Up to .260. Get hot, J.D.
A rare left-field triple, as Remy says. Nice job, Sox.
Pedro doubles, 12-7 Sox.
Heck yeah! What a rally with 2 down and no one on. 12-7.
Four straight XBH, including a homer and a triple.
I love Dotel. He was as good to us when he was with the Yankees.
You all would love Pierzinski if he played for you. He’s like Danny Ainge.
Such a garbage hit by Ramirez.
What happened with the Ramirez hit, Devine? I missed it.
Chopper in front of the plate, rolled STRAIGHT down the third-base line, on the dirt right next to the grass.
Kotsay grounder, but only one out.
Damage minimal.
11 of RS 12 runs tonight w/ 2 outs.
End it, Paps, for f*ck’s sake.
K Dye, K Thome, BB Konerko. Hmph.
Quentin flies out on a full count.
Good on ya, offense. Good on ya, bullpen.
Ballgame. 1.5 lead.
F7. I’ll take it.
Lowell’s at-bat in the third was tits. Contreras had no chance. Lowell had him timed.
And come to think of it: good on ya, Contreras. We pretty much owe that game to your error and subsequent giant eff-up.
So…are you guys rooting for us against the Rags this series or what???
Hey, I just now saw that the Yanks have that 3 game set against Texas. And you know what? While I don’t think one could call what I’ll be doing to be “rooting” for the Yankees, I do want them to win all three games. I’ve always had a grudge against the Rangers anyway since the late ’90s, so why support them now against all reason?
Umm, Go Opponent of the Rangers! Now pardon me while I become sick.
No matter what the standings, I can’t make myself root for the Yankees. Go Rangers.
Did anyone see Spilborghs’ walk-off granny in the 14th? He SPRINTED around the bases! Someone needs to tell him to take his time and enjoy it next time.
So you would rather have the Rags sweep us then the opposite which would help you guys greatly in the Wild Card race??? You need some hater-rade bro! ;)
Sorry Krueg, but I’m a Rangers fan too. And I expect our true Wild Card competition to be the Rays, not the Rangers.
And deep down, a VERY small part of me still wants to win the division.
I gotcha Ath…
