He Was Too Busy Reading Pynchon to Notice

“After the first out of the ninth, that’s when I found out,” insisted Ortiz. “It’s a good thing I found out then because I get nervous. (Infield coach Luis) Alicea said some things to me (about the no-hitter), messing with me. I looked up at the scoreboard and saw all those zeroes and then I saw the zero under the ‘H’ (the hits column).

“That’s when I looked over (at everyone in the dugout) and they said, ‘shhh,’ ” said Ortiz, putting his index finger over his lips in demonstration of the Sox’ signal for superstitious silence.

So what DOES David Ortiz do while sitting around, waiting for his at-bats?

  • there’s no I in team, but there is in Ortiz. Does he even know that he’s playing with other players?
This might have single-handedly changed my view of the DH. Get rid of it!

  • He was thinking about a nice, hearty D’Angelo’s steak & cheese. Mmmmmm…

  • There’s also a “Z” in Ortiz. Perhaps he was catching some in the dugout.

  • From the looks of him, safe bet he spends more than a little time at the clubhouse snack table…
