Here’s a very personal, fatalist’s take on the whole division crown thing: The division, to me, is worth something only if there is suitable embarrassment for the Yankees in not winning it. Home field, shmome field. Go ahead, fly an “AL East Champions 2003” flag for all I care, I don’t give a shit. But I want a friggin’ World Series, and I don’t give a rat’s ass if the Sox get it through the Wild Card or the Division. Winning the division, to a fan who has experienced enough of those (5 in 35 years, I think it is) to be happy for a long while, doesn’t mean jack to me, since I have never seen a Championship. I know you can’t relate to that (nor would you want to, for that matter).
