Historic Streak: Bloodless vs. Bloody Gamer III

The Red Sox and their starters have not allowed more than 3 runs in a game in the last 11 goes. The last time 12 such games happened in a row, it was 1915. In his last 19 or 20 (I can’t remember offhand) starts, Doubront has given up more than three earned exactly once (when he was buffeted by the Yankee bats), so that streak stands a decent chance of continuing, I’d say…then the Tigers come to town and that streak stands an excellent chance of ending if it doesn’t end today. So beat up this team one more time before the degree of difficulty rises for September. Rookie Rienzo is on the bump for the ivory Sox. Comment if you like that sort of thing.

  • Still in the second, bases loaded for Big Papi.

  • And Papi drives in two with a single to right. I think the slump can now safely be declared over.

  • Drew homers straight to center. 5-0. All runs have been scored with two outs.

  • And now Doubront gets taken out while still in the 4th. Lots of two-strike counts, but unable to get guys out in this inning.

  • Red Sox get a break when a catch is ruled not a catch and Ellsbury scores.

  • Ventura argues quietly for a long time but gets himself tossed anyway.

  • Wouldn’t mind the Tigers having to play 18 today …

  • Mike Aviles granny gives Terry Francona a 4-0 lead in Detroit.

  • Victorino out of the game. Probably the hammy acting up again.

  • Another former Red Sock, James Loney, ties the game in Oakland with a home run.

  • Six more outs to go, still 7-5. Some insurance would be nice.

  • Brandon Moss singles in Jed Lowrie to give the A’s a 2-1 lead.

  • Flowers home run off Breslow makes it 7-6. This is one of those infuriating games where the Sox are in command, let the other team back into the game and fail to score any runs in the latter part of the game.

  • Three more outs to go.

pale blue eyes September 1, 2013, 5:12 pm
  • No score in the bottom of the 8th. Koji time!

  • Victorino out with a hip contusion. And now Ellsbury has been taken out of the game.

    One out!

  • Two outs! Konerko up.

  • Three! Sweep! Much closer today though than it should have been.

Now, go A’s. And bring on the Tigers …

  • Pitching streaks are nice, but winning streaks (and sweeps, like the one that just happened in Oakland) are nicer. 5.5 (4 in the L) with 24 to play and 4 off-days. Glorious. Who’d have dreamed they’d be here on 9/1?
