History Repeats?

Everyone is saying that 2005 is the new 1978. They’re right.  Only it’s not the AL East.  Start monitoring the coming panic here, and especially here

  • A question, and perhaps Dr. Andres can answer it: is it crazy to start looking at the White Sox as part of the wild card standings? Normally I would assume so myself, but considering the games left with the Indians, the hotness of the Yankees, in conjunction with the Sox half-decency, might there not be the possibility that the White Sox’ Mickey-Rourke’s-circa-1991-post-9-1/2-weeks-career death spiral takes them out of the division lead, into the wild card mix, then out of the playoffs? The odds must be long, very long, but then odds don’t take into account momentum and psyche, right?

  • I’m waiting around for the Sox game to start (Comcast is awful in a lot of ways, but I’m loving being able to catch my Sox on NESN out here in Ann Arbor), and I just watched the Jays’ catcher pick off Posada at first base. A good omen, somehow. Let’s go, Clement!

  • I’m wathcing the Pats game. Seems like when I flip the channel both the Pats and the Sox have bad breaks. I domn’t know what to do now. I’ll change back at halftime, I think. I really hate when the Pats and Sox play on the same night. This happened last week too. Although that was a Thursday.

  • The Yanks are facing a challenge: Wright is out after being hit by a broken bat: Giambi went out with back spasms; and the Yankee bats have been quiet after 5 (4 -2 Blue Jays).
Lefties hit .340 against Lilly, but Joe is playing righties. Bubba (.320 in September) would have made 2 run-scoring plays in right that Ruben didn’t, and Joe put Andy Phillips in at first instead of Tino. But Leiter is throwing zeroes.

  • Tino would have made that play: 5 – 2 Blue Jays.
Meanwhile 7 – 0 Oakland, due to split the series. All the more challenge for the Yankees, to pick up another game. The Indians will win today.

  • Well, now I don’t have to feel guilty about watching the Pats instead. Although they are also losing. Not a good sports day as of now.

  • Blech. What a bad sports day, all around. If the Jets and/or Giants happen to lose, the whole Northeast corridor is going to be really grumpy.
