House Money II: Sox-Rays Gamer VII

We’ll get this one started a little early. The Sox have taken an ALCS to another improbable seventh game for the third time in five years. And, despite the unprecedented accomplishment of 2004 (coming back from down 3-0) and despite last year’s comeback against a pitching-rich Cleveland squad, this year, if a comeback is successful, might qualify as the most shocking, if only because of the moment at which the comeback began, with a somber-looking team down 7-0 and a mere nine seven outs in the season remaining.

It’s another clean slate, though, and we have no clue how tonight will turn out. We’re still in a bit of shock that it even has a chance to turn out at all. Use this as your Sunday baseball thread and gamer for tonight’s action.

Same feeling for me. In 2004 and 2007 I was confident and excited. This time I’m nervous. For some reason I don’t feel like we’re playing with house money, I feel like I have to see the Red Sox win or else this has all been a tease. In any case, tonight’s game should be amazing.

  • Can lightning strike thrice?
I’m braced for the worst, hoping for the best… I’ll be watching much of the game through cracks between fingers, no doubt.
It looked like the Rays had “solved” Lester the last time out. But then, that was during one of those unstoppable run of hitting which, pace the two solo homers off Beckett last night, seemed to have run out of steam. So I am still optimistic that the Sox are going out there tonight with one of the best pitchers in the A.L., along with a roster whose slumping stars (esp. Ortiz) appear to reviving.

  • Not that I think my iPod is psychic, but I put on some Zep (Immigrant Song mojo is pretty awesome) and the next song that came on was “Celebration Day.”
I thought that was a good sign until I realized that today has to be a celebration day for *someone!*

  • hopefully my health is no portent of the Sox’ efforts tonight as I have come down with a bad sore throat coupled with vicious fatigue. I hope I can make it until even 10pm. Arrgh.

  • Wonder how many TBS heads rolled last night.
The bar I was at has a ton of TVs tuned to a lot of different sports (and horse racing), so during the blackout the owner tried to find it on each of the multiple cable/dish systems he uses.
The result was the Sox game (when it came back) on more than one service, which were not in sync. One was 3 seconds ahead of the other.
So we got to see every single play in instant replay. Distracting, but nice. (Also, one of the patrons didn’t realize what was going on, and briefly thought I had amazing powers of prediction…)

  • Hoping to replicate Jackie’s iPod mojo, I opened up my iTunes, but the first song was “All I Ask Of You” from the Phantom of the Opera. Which kind of makes sense. All we’re asking for is a win tonight…
I’ll be at a friend’s house, since I’m cable-less. I’m also nervous. I felt very confident in 2004, less so last year, and even less so tonight. Here’s hoping for a dominant performance from Lester.

  • still say you got the concept of “house money” a**backwards sf…but no never mind…the sox either have to win 3 straight, or the rays have to lose 3 straight, and i’ll bet the sox win, because i’m now convinced that they are clearly the luckiest, if not the best [and they’re not] team in this era of baseball…when varitek closed his eyes and hit that homerun last night, i was convinced…that, and enough about the injuries already, there’s nothing wrong with papi, drew, or beckett…if they were really injured they wouldn’t be playing…every player will tell you that by this time of year they are sore and tired…maybe they finally decided to suck it up…sox in 7…as a yf, i’m ok with that…i’m sick of the madden lovefest…party’s over drew cary look-alike…

  • Come on, this again?!
    Really?!
    Really?!
Ok, I get it. This has something to do with something mean I said to a Sox fan in the 90’s. All right. I’m sorry. Now, God, will you make the Sox lose in excruciatingly painful fashion.

    Nick-YF October 19, 2008, 7:13 pm
  • “house money”, to me, means that you’ve won a bunch, you pocket your starter fees, and gamble with the rest. The Sox won a game unexpectedly – that return is the house money. These last two contests were/are just gambling with the winnings, that’s what it meant in terms of these post titles. That’s how I learned the term, if there’s another meaning of it then I will certainly stand corrected, dc.

    SF October 19, 2008, 7:26 pm
  • I could be wrong, but I don’t think this game will even be close. Tampa has to be reeling psychologically after the last two games.
    The Sox will roll.

    SoxFan October 19, 2008, 7:27 pm
  • if not the best [and they’re not] team in this era of baseball
I don’t love these discussions, but since you started it…
Who is better? Four ALCSes in six years, potentially (if we’re LUCKY!) three WS trips in six years, potentially (if we’re REALLY fortunate) three WS titles in six years. Which team deserves the plaudits more than the Sox, even if they don’t win tonight?
I don’t really care, frankly, I judge my team on my own terms and hate titles like “team of the decade”, but I am wondering, dc, who YOU think deserves that title?

  • Paul, you automatically gain 10 cool points for having the Phantom soundtrack in iTunes, since it’s the greatest Broadway show ever. Seen it three times–in New York, London, and Denver. I certainly hope you have the original version, which has the awesome 80’s drums during the Overture. Not to mention the fact that Crawford/Brightman are way better than anyone who does it nowadays.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 7:30 pm
  • Soxfan:
It only matters if Matt Garza is reeling. If Garza inoculates himself against the feelings of dread and pitches well, then the Rays can most definitely win this game, feelings of despondency throughout the dugout will matter little. The mood can change in a hurry.

    SF October 19, 2008, 7:31 pm

Start this game, dammit. I don’t think I can stomach a back/forth about broadway shows in a seventh game gamer. What’s next, a discussion about the best version of “Old Man River”? Play ball, fer chrissake!

The attitude of the Rays’ lineup is also important. If they are pressing and try to swing for the fences (like they did last game), they’ll be in trouble.

  • Who does Colin Powell think is going to win tonight? Did they ask him on MTP?

    SF October 19, 2008, 7:45 pm
  • Nick – ah, I see you’re more of a “CATS” guy? ;)
I’m not much into musicals nowadays, but I could probably still sing most of Les Mis from memory (if anyone could tolerate my voice that long). And “All I Ask of You” seems like an appropriate enough for tonight!

    Jackie (SF) October 19, 2008, 7:45 pm
  • WRKO just (accidentally, I presume) ran an add congratulating the “2008 American League Champion Red Sox.”
Don’t know who sponsored the ad. Ran for about 5-6 second and then someone realized what was going on and cut it off.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 7:46 pm
  • Les Mis is an amazing soundtrack, but a crappy musical (in my opinion). It’s like 8 hours long and a lot of the scenes are pointless.
And yeah, as SF says–play ball! Hope you’re healthy enough for the game SF.

  • from the Herald:
Would you believe it if we told you that Tampa Bay Rays phenom Evan Longoria didn’t exactly endear himself to the locals while out on the town in Boston last week??? During a champagne-soaked time at District after Game 4, the Rays’ hot corner man was suffering from a sorry case of premature celebration.
Seems that after the Rays humiliated the Sox for the second night in a row, Evan was yelling to anyone who would listen: “It’s over now, Boston!” […] And upon exiting the rockin’ club with a star-struck blonde, a spywitness swears that Longoria poured himself into the back seat of a Boston Police cruiser and said to the cop: “To my hotel!”

Lester has looked better tonight than his lst game

    BillsBurgSF October 19, 2008, 8:38 pm
  • At least Tek saw a lot of pitches.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 8:43 pm
  • Garza’s curve has a ton of movement.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 8:44 pm
  • Despite the K, nice at at-bat by Tek. Make him throw a lot of pitches.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 8:44 pm
  • Drew Carey looks uptight.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 8:47 pm
  • Wow, good to see the Rays pressing.

    BillsBurgSF October 19, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • Good, efficient inning for Lester.
Dale Arnold says that this is the third straight series in which Lester has pitched a deciding game for the Red Sox.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Garza looks very good, the Pedroia homer notwithstanding. Runs aren’t going to come easy if he keeps this up.

    SF October 19, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • At some point here, trailing is going to get into Tampa’s head.

    Michael October 19, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • Garza hits Pedroia – probably not intentional, but Garza is certainly pitching inside as a habit tonight.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • Ooo, that’s gonna leave a mark.

    BillsBurgSF October 19, 2008, 9:00 pm

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • thats the 4th or 5th sox hitter plunked this series I think

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • Pedroia steals second. Let’s go, Papi, bring him in. 2-2 count.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Not a good at-bat from Papi, who Ks on a pitch at his eyes.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • I don’t think Garza was trying to not hit Pedroia.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Despite looking very sharp, Garza has thrown 54 pitches. So credit due to the Sox, who have made him work. They need to keep this up for another two+ innings, get him the hell out of the game somewhat early.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:05 pm
  • Call me crazy, but I like the Jeter commercial. I don’t care for the message, but it’s clever.

    Michael October 19, 2008, 9:06 pm
  • That HBP wasn’t intentional, I don’t believe it at all. He’s been inside on everyone tonight: Youk, Ortiz, Pedroia, Coco. He’s doing it for a purpose, to back guys off the plate, not to hit anyone.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • I agree that the pitch wasnt intentional..but we have had a number of hitter plunked this series.

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • Lester is getting sharper and sharper, he is rolling tonight so far.

    BillsBurgSF October 19, 2008, 9:10 pm

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • I like one pitch outs. Lester needs to go at least six tonight, preferably seven.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • Lester’s going 9 tonight. Perfect game. Just fits.

    Sam-YF October 19, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • Thanks for that, Sam. Nicely done.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:15 pm

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • SF – I truely wish that my posts on this site could have an effect on the outcome of red sox games!

    Sam-YF October 19, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • Hotdog Longoria gets away with one there.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • Do the Rays as an organization teach their players to throw in stride, not set themselves? Seems like Bartlett and Longoria both do that on far more plays than it calls for.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:17 pm
  • Drew pops up. Sox bats are really anemic tonight, Garza is definitely on. Lester is going to have to keep this going for a while.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • Just keep making Garza throw pitches…perhaps it will get him out of the game sooner.

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Noticed that myself SF, especially with Longoria, he seems to bounce many a throw to first. He seems to have a strong arm, just doesn’t get set right.

    BillsBurgSF October 19, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Bay behind in the count. Every hitter, behind.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:20 pm
  • Bay whiffs lamely for the second time – he’s lost with Garza.

    SF October 19, 2008, 9:20 pm
  • So much for the Sox getting like 27 runs in the first few innings to make this less stressful. And my cold and fatigue are settling in for a long night, too.

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 9:36 pm

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 9:37 pm

  • Seriously SoxFan, at this point I’m willing to make a Viking Kittens worship altar in my closet and worship it every sundown. Valhalla I am coming!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • Yeah Kestrel!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • The loud puckering sound you hear is the Rays’ collective sphincter tightening.

    SoxFan October 19, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • Frick, just a bit under it.

    BillsBurgSF October 19, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • Just got under it.
    Papi …

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • Papi, it’s time to do your thing.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • Howell.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • Come on Ortiz, I’m clutching my vintage Papi bobblehead and listening to VikingKittens for the 12th time tonight. The planets are aligning.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:04 pm
  • papi, when you play for the Red Sox, you’re a bad mother fucker.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • “papi, when you play for the Red Sox, you’re a bad mother fucker.”
    Amen.

    SoxFan October 19, 2008, 11:08 pm
  • We come from the land of ice & snow (in my case the north country, state of new york…) If kittens can pillage, then Papi can still Pop one…

    kestrel October 19, 2008, 11:09 pm
  • WHAT THE FUCK? He was safe at 2nd!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:09 pm
  • Can’t blame Coco for trying to breakup the double play.

    BillsBurgSF October 19, 2008, 11:10 pm
  • Any chance Bradford remembers when he pitched for us and sucked?

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:11 pm
  • Balfour and Price warming for Ray.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:12 pm
  • Bases loaded for Drew.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:15 pm
  • Nancy.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:15 pm
  • Drew…..please

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:15 pm
  • Bases loaded for … J.D. Drew!

    SoxFan October 19, 2008, 11:16 pm
  • Bradford stepped on the foul line on the way back to the dugout! Back mojo for the Rays!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:16 pm
  • Price coming in.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:16 pm
  • Please please please Drew.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • Weak.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • Ump calls Drew out, refusing to go to the 3rd base ump. Bullshit.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:21 pm
  • Welp, that’s all folks.

    Jackie (SF) October 19, 2008, 11:21 pm
  • Price is nasty.

    Lar October 19, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • appears so…wish they would have shown the side angle on that to see if he actually checked his swing

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • At first glance it looked like a legit check swing, but it looked closer on the replay. They had better show the side-view.
That was probably out best chance.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • Fuck you, David Price.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • Replay shows that Drew did indeed swing. But it was close, he still should have appealed.
Bay/Kotsay/Cora in the 9th. Casey had better be hitting for Cora.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • Yeah, Ath, I kinda doubt we’re going to get another one with the 6-8 coming up in the 9th. I mean, never say never, but.

    Jackie (SF) October 19, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • Coco… I’m going to miss him when they get rid of him….

    rootbeerfloat October 19, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • In the 9th….
    Bat
    Kotsay
    Tek

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • oops…Bay

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:26 pm
  • Great inning from Oki.
Come on Bay, please find a way to get on base.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:28 pm
  • If Casey isn’t batting for Tek I’m going to shoot myself.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:29 pm
  • I can’t decide which would be worse, failing to PH for Tek with guys on base, or allowing him to be the last out of the season.

    Jackie (SF) October 19, 2008, 11:30 pm
  • Gentlemen, prepare your rally caps.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:30 pm
  • STILL ALIVE.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • Viking Kittens, you’re our only hope!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • I imagine the strike zone is going to grow this inning

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • Come on Bay, take one for the team!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • This inning is the ultimate test of the Sox’s belief, will, and determination.
The season all comes down to this.

    SoxFan October 19, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • I know this is an old story, but …
    http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2001/0620/1216282.html

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:32 pm
  • My heart stopped on that Bay check-swing.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:33 pm
  • Correction: that Bay swing.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:33 pm
  • Que the Santana.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • Bay walks, tying run at the plate! COME ON RED SOX!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • If any of you played Portal, I have Still Alive up and on repeat. WE CAN DO THIS.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • Kotsay has hit some bullets for outs.
    He deserves a freakin’ break.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • Portal is AWESOME Micah. Cake is a lie!

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:35 pm
  • 19 LOBs, Kotsay. 19!!!

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:35 pm
  • you are DUE!

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:35 pm
  • The ump has been extremely consistent this game. Glad to see it.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • By the power of Viking Kittens….

    SoxFan October 19, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • And as I say that Price strikes him out on an outside fastball.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • Still got my Viking Kittens playing.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • VARITEK IS BATTING? Slitting my wrists now.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • Oh, come on, ump.

    Jackie (SF) October 19, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • Jesus. Put in Lupus. At least he’d try.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • omg…tek at the plate…why why why?

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • You guys are such dorks. Of course, I’m one too since I know what you guys are talking about!

    Lar October 19, 2008, 11:38 pm
  • Portal was one of the best 30 minute games ever made. Genius.
Varitek K’s. Part of me wants Tito fired for leaving him in.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:39 pm
  • Yes, Lar, we are. Dorks, geeks, you name it.
Right now it’s all we got.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:39 pm
  • Tampa bay’s “Fans” make me sick…..

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:39 pm
  • I kind of wish Tek hadn’t hit the HR yesterday. Because then Tito would have FUCKING PINCH HIT FOR HIM.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • Lowrie to pinch hot.
Watch him get on, then Covelli hit a homer.
how sweet would that be in this barn?

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • Goodnight gentlemen. It’s been a wonderful season with you.

    Atheose October 19, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • Sox offense was a no-show in this game.

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:40 pm
  • Thanks for the season..night

    Rob SF October 19, 2008, 11:41 pm
  • Rays. Rays. Still can’t believe it.

    Lar October 19, 2008, 11:41 pm
  • Gentlemen, it’s been real.
    Thanks for a fun season.
    MNF tomorrow night.
We gonna do this on election night?

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:41 pm
  • Go Rays! Hope they hold on and represent for the AL east in world series…

    Sam-YF October 19, 2008, 11:43 pm
  • Crap. I can’t go to bed. My adrenaline pump is on overdrive.

    I'mBillMcNeal October 19, 2008, 11:43 pm
  • At least my prediction was perfect.
    Congrats, Rays.

    310ToJoba October 19, 2008, 11:44 pm
  • Well, that sucked.
I’ll be rooting for the Phillies now.
It’s been fun, gentlemen. Too bad it didn’t have a better ending.

    Micah-SF October 19, 2008, 11:45 pm
  • Yeah, I’m going Phils as well… I don’t mind the Rays as a club but their “fans” will be even more insufferable if they actually win.

    Jackie (SF) October 20, 2008, 12:07 am
  • You know, considering everything we faced, we really can’t complain too much.
All the injuries. We were in it to the end.
Tampa is way more talented than we are. We do have a lot to be proud of.
But what does Theo have planned for the off-season? Can Teixeira catch?

    I'mBillMcNeal October 20, 2008, 12:11 am
  • “…I don’t mind the Rays as a club but their “fans” will be even more insufferable if they actually win….”
odd comment, coming from an sf.

    dc October 20, 2008, 12:21 am
  • I hope those Rays beat those damn Phillies now; keep it in the AL Beast, St. Pete.

    attackgerbil October 20, 2008, 3:22 am
  • > their “fans” will be even more insufferable if they actually win
Spend some time around a Philadelphia fan of any sport.
    Go Rays.
