How to Hedge a Bet

Hey, Buster Olney thinks that if the Yankees get both the Unit and Beltran, they’ll make the playoffs!  Way to go out on a limb, Buster!

I guess these pro scribes are getting gunshy about predicting titles like they did after the Slappy acquisition last year.

  • SF is unfairly characterizing Olney’s column—he makes it clear that if those two acquisitions happen, the Yanks will be the dominant force in baseball, potentially steamrolling through the league. The bigger news here is that it seems to be a recantation of his bestselling book, Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty, which claimed an end to the team’s run of glory in 2001.

  • I went back to read the story to see why YF accused me of mischaracterizing the story, and I realized that Olney EDITED THE STORY after it was originally posted and there’s NO NOTE indicating that. If YF had read the original column, he would have seen that Olney closed his column with the statement, and I am trying to remember it as accurately as possible, that “if the Yankees acquire both Johnson and Beltran, then they can start printing the playoff tickets now”. Repeat: that was the CLOSING STATEMENT of his article. The newly posted and edited article is quite different. Bad Buster, bad ESPN editors.
