In Progress: Sox-Os Gamer II

A leadoff single and stolen base by Ellsbury off of Daniel Cabrera was followed by a double from Dustin Pedroia to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. They are now in the bottom of the second, Lester on the mound.

  • Thanks, AG.
Didn’t even know there was an afternoon game today. Heh.

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 3:42 pm
  • no comments on buchholz being DL’d?
A broken nail! Man if he were a yank, you SFs would be all over that!…

    Sam-YF May 14, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • Didn’t see the game thread. I’ve already announced at the office that I am going on the 60-day DL given all the nails I’ve broken this week.

    soxgirl May 14, 2008, 3:50 pm
  • Is it a real injury or a “demotion”-type injury? Honest question..

    Lar May 14, 2008, 3:50 pm
  • Lar –
Interesting point. Given his last game, it could easily be the latter.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 3:52 pm
  • Captain!

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 4:12 pm
  • I really, really wish I’d seen that. Sons of Sam Horn says on the DP to end the Orioles’ half that Manny made a catch, used his running momentum to climb the wal, HIGH-FIVED A FAN, then threw it back to first for the DP. That’s just awesome. Talk about Manny being Manny…

    Devine May 14, 2008, 4:14 pm
  • Devine – Are you serious?? I put the headphones down for just a second and didn’t hear anything about it.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 4:16 pm
  • It’s true. I just saw the video highlight on mlb.com. Wow.

    Scott SF May 14, 2008, 4:17 pm
  • Highlight available on Gameday/MLB.com…that’s a crazy catch, let alone the antics following.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 4:18 pm
  • Devine –
I’m a dope about mlb.com – where do I go to find it?

    soxgirl May 14, 2008, 4:23 pm
  • > A broken nail! Man if he were a yank, you SFs would be all over that!
So would I. It would be like that time Pavano had to sit because he had a run in his stocking.
To be fair to Buccholz, it’s not just broken, it’s clean off, which gives me the jeebies ’cause I’ve done it more than once and it’s a mutha.

    attackgerbil May 14, 2008, 4:28 pm
  • Ah, okay. Go to the homepage mlb.com, then see the little scoreboard on the left? Click on the little field next to the Boston/Baltimore score. There should be a tab in the upper-right part of the screen just above the box score labeled “videos”. Click on that to see the highlights (is your computer’s connection good?). You can also click on the 4th inning tab near the middle of the screen to see a little “Play” button next to the relevant play in the bottom of the inning.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 4:29 pm
  • Wow, three double plays hit into in 5.2 innings. Impressive, these Sox right now!

    SF May 14, 2008, 4:31 pm
  • Just watched the Manny play. That is seriously hysterical. I don’t know if it is smart, admirable, good baseball, or whatever. But it IS funny.

    SF May 14, 2008, 4:32 pm
  • Lowell with the ding! Then Youk doubles. Nice.

    SF May 14, 2008, 4:33 pm
  • That is a great play. The “showboating” high five gets three thumbs up. Awesome.

    attackgerbil May 14, 2008, 4:35 pm
  • Well, that picked up my afternoon Devine. Thanks!

    soxgirl May 14, 2008, 4:36 pm
  • NP, soxgirl. My afternoon is better as well. I’m sort of afraid to “watch” the rest of the game since the Sox might lose and harsh my effin’ buzz.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 4:37 pm
  • Is it just me or is “Jonathan Van Every” a very weird name? Per Baseball reference, there has never been a major leaguer with the last name “Some”. It’s like his name is missing a suffix or something. Or everything. I can’t tell.

    SF May 14, 2008, 4:39 pm
  • Seriously, if I didn’t just see the replay on Gameday, I would not believe this. Haha, that Manny is outrageous.

    Lar May 14, 2008, 4:43 pm
  • This game is starting to fall apart. Lester’s curves are all hanging now. Where’s Mills?

    SF May 14, 2008, 4:44 pm
  • So Lester, who I find very hard to watch, had apparently been fantastic so far. Then, as soon as I tune in, he starts pitching in excruciating fashion. Time to turn the game off, maybe it’s all just to piss me off.
    Man, I’m egotistical!

    SF May 14, 2008, 4:47 pm
  • Y’see? 3-2 Sox. One out, runner at 1st for Orioles. Bah!

    Devine May 14, 2008, 4:51 pm
  • Shoulda known three runs wouldn’t be enough. Sox have been leaving runners all over the place, and the ones they haven’t left, they’ve erased on double plays.

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 4:52 pm
  • SF, egotistical or no, you need to turn the game off.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 4:52 pm
  • > egotistical!
oldie/goodie… how does SF screw in a light bulb? holds bulb to socket… universe turns around him.. ;)

    attackgerbil May 14, 2008, 4:54 pm
  • One more, Lester, one more.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 4:54 pm
  • Cool. I wonder if he’s in next inning. Or is it something like Hansen-Oki-Pap?

    Devine May 14, 2008, 4:56 pm
  • Gary Thorne just said “Every strikes out”. Shouldn’t it be “Van Every strikes out”?

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:01 pm
  • Great comeback to K two batters.
That catch by Manny is the coolest thing all year. All. Freaking. Year.

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:01 pm
  • Yuck, terrible inning from the Sox at the plate.

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:02 pm
  • For a guy who speaks for a living, Gary Thorne is amazingly bad at it.

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:02 pm
  • Is anybody else getting anything done? I just keep watching Manny’s catch.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 5:05 pm
  • Hmmm, Lopez.

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:06 pm
  • I watch it every five or ten minutes at this point myself, rbf.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 5:07 pm
  • Me, too. I’ve watched it four times in the last 10 minutes. Showed it to a coworker who doesn’t care about baseball.

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:09 pm
  • Showed it to a fellow Yankees fan – he agrees – awesome in every way.

    attackgerbil May 14, 2008, 5:12 pm
  • Hansen foils up his knuckles.

    attackgerbil May 14, 2008, 5:12 pm
  • The new SF in me thinks this will end well. The old SF in me thinks this will end poorly.
New SF is only about 8 months old. Old SF has 39 years of experience. I’ll leave it at that.

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:14 pm
  • Here comes the bullpen, bringing the gasoline…

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:14 pm
  • Scared here.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 5:15 pm
  • 42 games in and the Sox have had three extended stretches of terrible baseball. That’s not a good sign for the long haul.

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:16 pm
  • I’m not sure you can use the word “extended” after only 42 games. They have had two pretty nasty five-game stretches, though, and I’m none too confident about this game…

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:19 pm
  • crap

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 5:19 pm
  • Lord. Walk ’em loaded.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 5:19 pm
  • here comes Oki – does that make us feel better or worse? He’s been letting an unfortunate number of inherited runners score.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 5:20 pm
  • Wow, Hansen did not do such a great job there — and, again, I am not sure as to the reasoning here. Why bring in Hansen to get one out if Okajima was back there anyway? Why not bring in Okajima in the first place?

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:22 pm
  • a five game stretch is, to me, “extended”. It’s personal, though. Five game skids feel really long, at least to this fan. And stretches that last longer that are still dotted with a couple of wins feel long as well. That’s what we are seeing here since the third game of the Tigers series, and extended stretch of mid-level suckitude.

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:22 pm
  • so, um, worse.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 5:24 pm
  • Brad Mills, future non-manager.

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:24 pm
  • F*ck me. Well, okay, time to watch the Manny catch on a loop for the rest of the day.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 5:24 pm
  • Jay Payton? Are you serious? Jay Payton? God, this team sucks.

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:25 pm
  • Let’s not give Pedroia any free passes here. This inning is in large part on him. We’d pillory LFRS if this happened, for sure (and for good reason!), but DP shouldn’t avoid the blame. The inning should have been over.
    Gotta go…

    SF May 14, 2008, 5:26 pm
  • Baseball sucks. F*ck baseball.
Seriously, I’m good for nothing now–my afternoon is ruined.

    Devine May 14, 2008, 5:30 pm
  • Ah, not watching live. Did he botch the infield single?

    Paul SF May 14, 2008, 5:31 pm
  • This is the third game in a row where we’ve blown a 3-0 lead.

    rootbeerfloat May 14, 2008, 5:38 pm
  • So, will the Rays walk away with the division title this year?

    Ron Newman May 14, 2008, 6:10 pm
  • > will the Rays walk away
    swim.

    attackgerbil May 14, 2008, 6:19 pm
  • That Manny high-five to the fan should go into the pantheon of all-time “Manny being Manny” moments.
But I am still waiting for Manny do a cartwheel or backflip in the outfield during a play.
