I hate the Yankees.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I hate the Rays, Blue Jays, and Orioles too. Really hate them, want them beaten and bludgeoned (baseball-wise) every single day.  Hate them each in their own special way.

But not like I hate the Yankees.  Fucking Yankees.

(This is the part where I qualify the word “hate” as maybe a little strong, but you know, “really dislike” doesn’t sound as good.)

When I see a Yankee hat on someone walking down the street, I frown and sometimes passive-aggressively mutter “Go Red Sox” as I go by.

News of the Yankees’ success troubles me. If they have a good day, my day hasn’t gone as well as it might.

Might be a bit one-sided, this whole thing. I doubt most Yankee fans give much of an extra eff regarding the Red Sox.

In October ’09, the night of WS Game 6, my wife (who is not really a baseball fan at all, she certainly finds it the most enjoyable/tolerable of the major sports, but it’s not FIERY) said she wanted to go upstairs and watch them finish the victory. She had gotten tickets during the ’01 WS and remembered those games fondly considering the specter of 9/11 hovering over the city (wife was living there at the time), and wanted to celebrate.  And knowing how serious 9/11 and those WS games were for her as an experience, I had the temerity to resent her doing this.  How DARE she?  Does she not understand what the Sox mean to me?!

A lot of it is just the jealousy of success, I suppose. Of bucking the “they’re getting old” mantra for fucking years on end. Mostly, I think it’s just that the Sox are more likely to lose in games against them, facing such a good team.

Had a couple of good friends in college who were big Yankee fans. Was kind of a nominal Yankee fan for a while because of them until I was really pulled in by the ’03 postseason. But then I found out where my heart was for life. So maybe part of it is a backlash to my “original” fandom. (Though, actually, my original fandom was as a Rangers fan, growing up in Texas, followed them from like 8-11 years old.)

Don’t really know why I’m writing this. We’re not particularly close to a series with the Yankees or anything. Just felt like pushing content, I suppose.

Plus this is such a generally friendly website regarding the rivalry; it’s good to acknowledge the hostility here and there. Politely.

  • You’re right, I don’t really care about the Sox. For me it’s more about not liking Sox fans, but their bravado has obviously fallen off the last few years.

That’s what I love about this site, cool SF fans. And some of my best friends are SF’s as well.

I get it though. It’s like how I hate/heavily dislike/etc the Patriots or the Bruins. Those teams dominate my teams, Fins and Sabres.

    It’s totally understandable.

That being said, why waste time with this. The Sox are doing very well, why not focus on that and enjoy it! I think we’re in third place now anyway…

  • If I were a vulgar man, I might well say that each and every Sox fan should go fuck their self silly – but politely – in their Ted Williams-having-goofy-ass-ear-holes, and then do the other one. But I would never say that.

  • I’m learning in my old age not to take things, or people for that matter, so seriously. There are assholes everywhere. And when it comes to the two biggest fanbases in baseball, we definitely have more than our respective fair shares.

There have been many a night where I try and corral some random, asshole Yankee fan in some sports bar in some city. There have been many a night where I wanted to put an asshole Sox fan in the hospital. But I have had way more fun nights with random SF’s at a bar. And I usually meet very cool YF’s as well.

It’s kinda like politics. The people who scream the loudest on the Right and Left are mostly ignorant. They just get the most play.

PS I really had no idea ag had the fire in him like that ^^^^ Bearing some teeth! ;)

  • When the Sox finish losing today, they will have lost 5 of their last 6. So that probably explains some of my non-focus on being a winning team, etc., etc.
