Joba To The Tigers

One year, 2.5M to play for Detroit. Good luck, big man. It seemed like you never really got things put together in the Bronx.

  • One time, Chamberlain beat Josh Beckett (at more or less the height of his Red Sox powers) in a 1-0 game, shutting down the Red Sox for 7 innings at Fenway Park. I’ve rarely been more angry at baseball.

That was 5 years ago. Good luck, Joba.

  • Rarely can you trace the downfall of a shooting star to one singular event the way you can in Joba’s case. It has become hard to recall the excitement generated when he burst onto the scene in 2007. Giving up 1 ER in 24 IP with an almost 6:1 K:BB ratio gave the Yankees such a shot in the arm, and they went into the 2007 playoffs with a seemingly invincible Joba-Mariano late-game lockdown formula. Until the night of the midges in Cleveland. I know he still had a very strong 2008 with a 2.60 ERA over more than 100 IP, and there were flashes of brilliance in subsequent years, but that 2007 night in Cleveland, when I was following the game surreptitiously from a work-party that I had no choice but to attend, not only damaged the Yankees’ momentum in that post-season (they lost that game 2-1 in 11 innings, forfeiting the chance of splitting the series in Cleveland and instead returning to the Bronx down 2-0), but it also shattered forever the aura of invincibility that Joba had carried with him since his late-season debut that year.

I am happy for Joba that the devastating injury he incurred while playing with his son a couple years ago didn’t in fact cut his career short, but he never struck me as the sharpest tool in the shed, and he had the temerity to talk back to the demi-god-like Mariano for no good reason in Mo’s final season, and so I meet his departure with little more than a shrug.

  • Don’t care about football (vaguely rooting for Seahwaks because of family), but congrats, krueg, on your Dolphins’ big win over the Pats. :)

  • They never should have taken Joba out of the bullpen. That was the end of him. He could have been a great closer. Oh well.

THANKS D!!!! That was incredible man. Broke the 7 game losing streak to the Pats too. I may be going to the last game against the Jets. Should be to clinch the final Wild Card spot. I am soooooooo stoked.

Substitute “Bard” for “Joba” and you have the Red Sox version of this tragedy.
