Jorgenaut: Yanks-Rangers Gamer IV

After two days of carrying the Bombers, and with a day game after night, Jorge Posada gets a well-earned break this afternoon. He’ll watch from the bench as the Yanks, behind Jaret Wright, (sigh) take on Texas and Vincente Padilla (3-3, 4.57). Wright’s been decent in his last couple of outings, but our faith in him extends no farther than his last pitch. (And for goodness sake, Jaret, get rid of that lip of chaw—you play for the New York Yankees, not Wichita State.) Padilla’s no great shakes either, but, despite their titanic comeback the other night, this is still a Yankee offense that has failed to put up more than 4 runs in 6 of it’s last 7 games. And with Kelly Stinnett in the lineup instead of the one-man jaugernaut of a backstop, the offense is stretched even further. Your thread for comment.

  • Freakin’ A, I just picked up Posada for my gantasy teeam, figuring I needed a good offensive catcher to back up Varitek on his many off days, and with the Sox off, Posada gets a break. The nerve of that bastard!
I knew I shoulda picked up that guy from the Marlins…

  • Sox are off today, so this is my next best option. Wright looks positively acceptable today. Six up six down on 20 pitches is pretty good. Hopefully he’ll fall apart shortly.

    mattymatty May 18, 2006, 1:26 pm
  • Wright looking positively not like Jaret Wright!

  • Vincente Padilla and Fareed Zakaria: separated at birth.

    YF May 18, 2006, 1:28 pm
  • A pitchers’ duel. Who’d have guessed it?

    YF May 18, 2006, 1:31 pm
  • YF, that’s hilarious. I was thinking Willem Dafoe, who is another Fareed Zakaria doppleganger IMHO.

  • Padilla v. Wright: I wouldn’t have guessed you’d have a combined 8 innings of zero run ball. This is why I don’t bet on sports.

This is why I’m doing poorly in fantasy baseball. I don’t see these things coming.

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 2:58 pm
  • you knew that was comming as soon as you hit post.

    sf rod May 18, 2006, 2:58 pm
  • Nick – don’t expect that to last. He just gave up a two run homer and his ERA jumped 0.80.
When you are drafting for fantasy baseball do you only select players you like? I’ve never played before, and one reason is I don’t want to put myself in the position of having to root against the Red Sox. Is that ever a problem for you (with the Yankees)?

    mattymatty May 18, 2006, 3:00 pm
  • yeah. It was a silly thing to do. Doh!

    sf rod May 18, 2006, 3:04 pm
  • MM, the only rule I follow is that I refuse to have Schilling on my team. Seriously. I’m in an auction-style league where 8 of the 12 players are Yanks fans, so Yanks are very expensive and I tend to only have 1 on my roster (if that). But even if I have a starter going against the Bombers, I always root for the pinstripes. My fantasy team be damned!

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 3:04 pm
  • Why is Scott Erickson on this team? I have to post something on another thread…

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 3:06 pm
  • Why is Scott Erikson sitll in the majors?

    walein May 18, 2006, 3:07 pm
  • Why with Scott Erickson on the mound do the Rangers bunt? Especially after he’s just walked the first guy he faced.

    mattymatty May 18, 2006, 3:10 pm
  • The “intangibles” that erikson brings to the game are not for you to question Matty! The man knows magic!

    walein May 18, 2006, 3:11 pm
  • Like that had any chance of working.

    mattymatty May 18, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • Turns out the erikson’s magic is not being able to get people out.

  • there’s another earned one for wright.

    sf rod May 18, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • I noticed something about Cano. Tell me if anyone else sees this. If he swings at the first pitch, he usually swings at just about every pitch, and usually makes an out. If he takes the first pitch, he usually takes a few more, and gets a hit or walks.
    Anyone else notice that?

    RichYF May 18, 2006, 3:17 pm

  • I can’t believe Old Man Bernie’s going to get 600 ab’s this year.

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 3:42 pm
  • I can’t believe Erickson is still in there. Who is managing this team and aren’t they interested in winning?

    mattymatty May 18, 2006, 4:01 pm
  • Wait, who’s Scott Ericksen again? I honestly have never heard of him. Is he Tanyon’s replacement? If so, he seems to be filling Tanyon’s slot quite effectively.

    rk May 18, 2006, 4:01 pm
  • Torre’s managing and he has a thing for really crappy players.

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 4:03 pm
  • Maybe Damon accidentally bumped into him in the dugout while doing a handstand and Torre woke up from his nap.

    rk May 18, 2006, 4:05 pm
  • Barajas homers? Scott, Scott, Scott….

    YF May 18, 2006, 4:05 pm
  • any reason why Torre seems to have very little trust in Villone?

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 4:08 pm
  • I realize Wright pitched a pretty good game, but any team that throws Jaret Wright, Scott Erickson and Ron Villone out there deserves to lose.

    mattymatty May 18, 2006, 4:14 pm
  • Villone has been rather effective. Basically, if Torre is managing, you either pitch everyday (Proctor), or once a week (Villone). The only exceptions are say Sturtze and Farns. Villone doesn’t look sharp, but he never pitches. It’s kind of like calling on Kevin Reese after sitting the bench for 6 days and expecting him to get a hit. It’s not going to happen.

    RichYF May 18, 2006, 4:20 pm
  • villone had 16 balls in a 25 pitch inning

    sf rod May 18, 2006, 4:25 pm
  • I’m with Rich. Torre managed this one into an L.

    YF May 18, 2006, 4:25 pm
  • I agree, Rich. I don’t understand why with 9 outs to go and your team down by two at home you turn to the worst guy in your bullpen. He really shouldn’t even be on the roster, but if he is, Erickson should never get the ball unless the Yankees are up or down by ten.

    mattymatty May 18, 2006, 4:26 pm
  • Torre’s in-game skills have diminished markedly from the early days.

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 4:29 pm
  • on a thursday get away day game, torre opted for resting bullpen regulars. not too out of the norm. erickson just didn’t do his job. i’m sure torre will duely note that.

    sf rod May 18, 2006, 4:41 pm
  • “i’m sure torre will duely note that.”
The worry is that he won’t. How else explain Torre thinking that Tanyon was worthy of the co-set-up label going into the season? He seriously believed that Sturtze and Farnsworth were equals…And remember he got to watch Tanyon from a better seat than most.

    NickYF May 18, 2006, 4:50 pm
  • also, I don’t understand this get-away day excuse. The Yanks are going to Flushing tomorrow. Do they need to rest their aching joints for the long train ride?
