Just What The Yankees Needed

There’s a power-hitting, high OBP lefty available on the market. Kills the ball. Not popular with the fans. Can’t play defense, can’t run. Would play for league minimum. Instead the Yankees sign Richie Sexson. At least we get to keep the "can’t play defense, can’t run, and not popular with fans" parts.

58richiecropped

He was born in Portland, Oregon so I have to root for him. Dammit.

  • I guess since he is so cheap it really isn’t that bad??? Betemit is terrible so hopefully they can cut his sorry ass soon…
He’s a pretty good first baseman, right? All I know about him really is that he loves to K and hits an occasional HR.

    krueg July 17, 2008, 3:20 pm
  • Yeah, Seattle is eating almost all of his salary.

    attackgerbil July 17, 2008, 3:24 pm
  • He looks like Lurch’s love child…

  • “At least we get to keep the “can’t play defense, can’t run, and not popular with fans” parts.”
Yeah, ummm, except he’s an average defender. That’s better than Betemit. And Sexson might hit LHP. It’s a sad reflection on the organization, but it’s a decent chance to take.

    A YF July 17, 2008, 3:29 pm
  • I don’t think he’s that great of a first baseman. He’s 11 feet 13 inches tall so he reaches a lot of off line throws, but as far as range goes..
Let’s put it this way: Seattle released him, have been fielding Miguel Cairo at first and signed Craig Wilson.

    attackgerbil July 17, 2008, 3:31 pm
  • Well at least the Yankees will have the legs for the stretch run.
Get it? Cause he’s so tall! Ha!
Okay, I’m going to lunch now. SF’s restaurant analogy in the other thread has awoken my appetite.

    FenSheaParkway July 17, 2008, 3:31 pm
  • AG – You have to cheer for him because he was born in Portland? Cuz you feel sorry for him having to put up with all that rain?

    rootbeerfloat July 17, 2008, 3:32 pm
  • Is that Marilyn Manson’s face on Richie Sexson’s head?

    SF July 17, 2008, 3:36 pm
  • “Let’s put it this way: Seattle released him, have been fielding Miguel Cairo at first and signed Craig Wilson.”
This might be more of a statement about Seattle than Sexson.

He’s average – not great. Seattle was trying to get more full-time offense. The Yanks simply need someone to play decent defense and hit a little against LHP. He could do that. No one else on the team was.

Yah.. gotta root for all the Oregon guys. Of course Jacoby Ellsbury is my favorite. Double dammit.

  • TURNING POINT!!!!

    SF July 17, 2008, 3:43 pm
  • That’s a freaky-looking expression on Sexson’s face there. His eyes look demonic.

    Devine July 17, 2008, 3:49 pm
  • “TURNING POINT!!!!”
That was the joke I made in the post I put up after this one. Didn’t see AG beat me to it. But, yes, this is a turning point obviously.

    Nick-YF July 17, 2008, 3:55 pm
  • Questionable, but I guess if he’s playing for essentially free..

    Lar July 17, 2008, 3:58 pm
  • that’s cause he just trashed Kason Gabbard in the helmet toss, tackle portion of his at bag.

    rootbeerfloat July 17, 2008, 4:17 pm

Nah. Originally from a pet store in upstate NY, but have lived here long enough to not be considered an import anymore.

    attackgerbil July 17, 2008, 4:22 pm
  • Don’t be ashamed of where you are from AG!!!

Never ashamed. But Oregon is “home” now, and probably for good.

    attackgerbil July 17, 2008, 4:25 pm
  • First Ponson now Sexson…
I guess there won’t be any more arguments about players with class, you know, glass houses and all.

    LocklandSF July 17, 2008, 4:43 pm
  • Marilyn Manson? In this pic Sexson looks more like John Kerry circa 1984.

    Hudson July 17, 2008, 4:53 pm
  • Sounds like the second coming of Steve (bye-bye) Balboni

    pbc July 17, 2008, 4:56 pm
  • Doesn’t he like to call out the fans in the press? I can’t wait for the first time he does that in a city with fans that actually care.
Oh man, this could get really ugly. I can’t wait!!!

    .344/.423/.623 Sexson against lefties
    .235/.257/.412 Betemit against lefties
    Any questions?

Nettles: My dream is that I wake up tomorrow, come to work, screw around all day and post on YFSF my non-sensical garbage that lessens each and every post, then head to the bar after work and see that Betemit and Abreu are no longer in pinstripes…that would be awesome. I’m willing to give the big ape a chance. Let’s Go Richie!!!

  • lane + ensberg + broussard (x2) + sexson = enough money to obtain an actual 1st baseman. i guess if you throw enough crap some of it might stick.

  • Super! Another 1Bman that I can’t stomach. We finally rid ourselves of Shelley Duncan and then we sign Sexson. Isn’t Sexson just a taller Duncan, more or less?
Betemit, Giambi and Sexson…If we were playing High Arc softball we would be money right now!
Seriously though on the same day the Phillies get Joe Blanton and the D’Backs get Tony Clark, we get Big Sexy.

John – You’re not seriously suggesting the Yanks should have gotten Clark, are you?

    A YF July 17, 2008, 7:45 pm
  • Suggesting, no. I just think Tony Clark (sad to say) is someone I would rather have, even at his advanced age. For the price though, the Yankees got the better end of the deal. The D’Backs had to give up a kid from AAA, us nothing. I don’t hate the move, just don’t like the player.

Yeah, that’s all it is. Frankly, if you can get Mariners fans to boo you when you are essentially a home-town boy and it hurts your feelings, what will happen to you in the Bronx? Yikes.

    attackgerbil July 17, 2008, 9:17 pm
  • Ath, the Phillies went hard.
They gave up their #2 prospect, according to BA, Adrian Cardenas (2B). Their #4 overall prospect Josh Outman (LHP) and Matthew Spencer, an OF’r.
The A’s farm system is stacked at this point.
With Pedro quite possibly out for a while, this was the right move for the Phillies.
