Keep It Rolling: Angels-Sox Gamer VII

Hey, look, there’s a game going on! We were very pessimistic about our Red Sox after the first two games of the series. Thanks to Sidney Ponson, we feel great now, though! We’re world beaters! Let’s go, boys! Sweep those Angels!

  • Ugh, are we really 1-6 against the Angels this year? Forgotten it was that bad.
And I still don’t know how the Angels are the best team in baseball. Middle of the pack hitting, middle of the pack pitching, an unsustainable record in close games. Maybe this is the week they begin their collapse…

  • And as you say that, they get two singles….

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 7:31 pm
  • Dice’s strength this year has been limiting hits. Better get to it, Dice.

    Paul SF July 28, 2008, 7:32 pm
  • well, then there’s the walks….

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 7:35 pm
  • ok, he limits the damage. Time for the bats to erase that run.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 7:37 pm
  • Manny punched out on a pitch WELL off the plate. BS.

    SF July 28, 2008, 7:42 pm
  • Thank goodness. I was bracing for the howls about Manny leaving the bat on his shoulder.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 7:43 pm
  • Great, Lowrie punched out on a pitch that appeared wide as well. This ump sucks, can’t keep his strike zone straight.

    SF July 28, 2008, 7:47 pm
  • Seriously, this ump can’t keep his calls straight, a 1-0 pitch to Izturis was just fine, but called a ball. I can’t stand games called like this, totally inconsistent.

    SF July 28, 2008, 7:55 pm
  • Elf! I love that little guy.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 7:57 pm
  • OK, let’s hit this punk Weaver.

    SF July 28, 2008, 7:57 pm
  • Anybody smarter than me know why the infield fly rule wasn’t called?

    Michael July 28, 2008, 7:59 pm
  • the infield fly rule means that you can’t drop the ball and pretend it’s a grounder, thereby forcing the guy on first to run into an easy double play. It doesn’t address (as far as I know) the case of the guy on first running on his own accord.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 8:02 pm
  • Why can’t SIdney Ponson pitch every night?
Our offense is back to stinking.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:03 pm
  • I’m going to look it up, but the way I understood it is, when the infield fly rule is called, batter is out, runners return to bases. It doesn’t matter whether the ball was actually caught or not, or what the runner does-the ball is dead once the umpire calls it an infield fly.
Don’t get me wrong-I’m happy. I just want to understand.

    Michael July 28, 2008, 8:05 pm
  • From wiki-pedia
The infield fly rule is not in effect if there is a runner on first only, as the rule-makers assumed fielders would not gain a significant advantage by forcing out the runner rather than the batter; in either case, the net result would be one more out and a runner on first base. Also, an infield fly does not affect baserunners other than the batter. Just like any other fly ball, if an infield fly is caught, runners must retouch (or “tag up”) their time-of-pitch base before attempting to advance; if an infield fly is not properly caught, no tag up is required and the runners may try to advance.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 8:10 pm
  • “The ball is alive and runners may advance at the risk of the ball being caught, or
retouch and advance after the ball is touched, the same as on any fly ball. If the hit becomes
a foul ball, it is treated the same as any foul.”
Nope, I was wrong, you CAN advance on an infield fly. It’s just that you seldom want to.
    I love the Internet.

    Michael July 28, 2008, 8:14 pm
  • Not stinking! 2nd and 3rd, none out, Papi with the double.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:15 pm
  • TRADE ME RIGHT AFTER THIS TWO RUN SINGLE, says Manny.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:17 pm
  • As happy as I am that we are now ahead, my stomach feels queasy when they wave Ortiz on.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 8:17 pm
  • Do not sell this farm, Ray.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 8:18 pm
  • stuck listening to the game here in so. cal on angels radio broadcast. in between ripping on manny, rex “the blunderdog” huddler has found time to rip on varitek being “voted by the fans” onto the allstar team. he’s calling it the east coast bias. it’s a shame they give uniformed folk (and career .260 hitters) a microphone.

    sf rod July 28, 2008, 8:22 pm
  • Very strong inning from Matsuzaka. Headed to the bottom of the fifth, 2-1 Sox. Dice has given up three hits, one walk, in those five.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:32 pm
  • Tek ground rule double, on a hard hit ball no less! Weaver has to be kicking himself, that’s like giving up a hit to the pitcher.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Well that started well and ended ugly, Pedroia and Youk strike out with Tek at third on awful hacks.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:44 pm
  • Finally got out of class, glad to see A. That we’re winning, and B. that Daisuke is only at 81 pitches.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • So have I missed anything good? Somebody catch me up to speed.
SHIT, I really AM bad luck–Kotchman homers.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 8:49 pm
  • There goes the lead. 3-2 Angels on a Kotchman homer. Predictable following the Sox’ squander.
    Dice-K falling apart now.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:50 pm
  • Well that was quick, Matsuzaka went from looking very, very good for five innings to looking like Sidney Ponson in about three minutes. WTF?

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:53 pm
  • And that’s the ballgame. Gone in a flash. Pitiful.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Wow Hunter destroyed that, hits if over the center-field portion of the Green Monster. Daisuke has kept his ERA down by only giving up 5 homers all season, and suddenly he gives up 2 tonight. At least we’ll get a few innings of Masterson awesomeness.
Daisuke’s ERA jumped from 2.77 to 3.04 on that homer. Geez.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • Five up, five scored in the sixth. Implosion.

    SF July 28, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • I’ll go throw myself off a bridge now. That’s like 4 games I’ve jynxed in the last week by joining the conversation mid-game.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • another huddler comment…. “they’ve really packed fenway tonite, they always sell out this place when the angels come to town.”
    thanks rex.

    sf rod July 28, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • On the other hand, Bal 11, NYY 0, bot 6.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:10 pm
  • Holy shit thanks for the smile on my face Bill! 11-0, wow.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:10 pm
  • Mussina, Robertson got bombed.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • Tor 2, Ray 1, bot 8.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • What a f*cking letdown this game is.

    SF July 28, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • Lowrie > Lugo, 7-3 now.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • TFMLBP Jed w/ an RBI GR double; Jerd done for the night, Tek looking for hit No. 2 … that cost us a run

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Pinch hit for Tek!

    Paul SF July 28, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • Varitek walks! Tying run at the plate!

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • Tek walks to load the bases, Jacoby up …

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • Jacoby chases a horrible pitch. Fuck.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • A craptastic at-bat by Ellsbury.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • Bot 8, Tor 3, Ray 1

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • Did anyone else see that ESPN commercial, where at the end he said “Im gunna catch the last 3 innings of this game… did you see Daisuke give up 6 runs in 5+ innings?”
They must have been waiting MONTHS to use that.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:28 pm
  • Youk knocks one off the wall but fails to reach 2nd. Oh well, still a hit.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:34 pm
  • Ortiz singles, saying “f-you” to the shift.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:36 pm
  • Manny GIDP, here come the boos.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Well, at least the Rays have lost.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Manny pulls an A-Rod.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Hansen. And it’s time for tonight’s game: How many pitches for the first two outs, and then how many pitches for the last out?
    I say 8 and 15.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:41 pm
  • Six pitches for the first two outs …

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:44 pm
  • And Hansen gets out of it with 8 pitches. I lose.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:45 pm
  • Sorry, nine pitches.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:46 pm
  • We’re happy that you’re wrong Bill!
11-4 now in the Yankees game.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:47 pm
  • Varitek gets on base for the 3rd time tonight. I’ll be damned.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:56 pm
  • Oh God Ellsbury up again with RISP. Booo umpire calling an outside strike on him.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:57 pm
  • Ellsbury singles! 7-4 Sox, men on 1st and 2nd for Pedroia, who is 0-4 tonight.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 9:58 pm
  • YES. That’s a big hit for Jacoby.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 9:59 pm
  • Pedroia grounds out. Youk-Ortiz-Manny in the 9th.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 10:01 pm
  • The, ah, leg hunter is in. a-hem.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 10:09 pm
  • Again, another frustrating game thanks to Dice-K’s insistence on striking out everyone. Why the f*ck won’t he just throw to contact?

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 10:13 pm
  • Lowell Rocks.
K-Rod out for yet another fucking save. Please blow it for him!

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 10:14 pm
  • Youk nails it, but right to Vlady.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 10:17 pm
  • Ortiz vs K-Rod: 1 for 2.
How the hell has Papi only faced him twice?

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 10:18 pm
  • Manny tattoos one, 7-5 Sox. Manny officially drinks K-Rod’s milkshake.
Too bad we didn’t have any runners on.

    Atheose July 28, 2008, 10:20 pm
  • Manny is, in fact, a bad man.

    rootbeerfloat July 28, 2008, 10:23 pm
  • Manny.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 28, 2008, 10:25 pm
  • Hey guys, quick question: Where can I find cute Red Sox shirts? My girlfriend’s birthday is next month and she wants a bunch of cute/funny Red Sox t-shirts. I’ll probably get her the Ortiz shirt from SurvivingGrady, and maybe a “I do it with my Sox on” shirt, but aside from that I’m stumped. Any ideas?

    Atheose July 29, 2008, 8:25 am
  • Ath, there is no such thing as a cute Red Sox shirt! :)

    Sam-YF July 29, 2008, 9:03 am
  • Haha shoulda seen it coming Sam.
I did find a cool one that says “ARod pees sitting down” though!

    Atheose July 29, 2008, 9:09 am
  • If you haven’t read this Gammo article, you should.
    http://tinyurl.com/5lmgdt
It’s about the most vitriolic he’s ever been, absolute character assassination.

    LocklandSF July 29, 2008, 9:21 am
  • Ath – They sell the same shirt with Manny being the one who sits while he pees at yankee stadium
Lock – Gammo has been that vitriolic before and it was directed towards A-Rod after his op-ed. Overall the quality of his writing has gone down in the past few years. He used to be one of my favorites but I feel he has lost his edge.

    Sam-YF July 29, 2008, 10:33 am
  • Agreed Sam, I remember Gammons being FURIOUS after ARod opted out. They interviewed him later that night after ARod opted out and his general message was “F*ck ARod, he’s a horrible person disrespecting the game, I hope he gets run over by a bus.” This Manny article isn’t as bad, though it is certainly damning.
To his credit he’s rarely this angry/negative so when he does do a piece with this tone it carries more weight, as opposed to CHB who is this way in the majority of his articles.
