Keep Your Johnson on the Bench, Please: Sox-Nats Gamer III

The Red Sox acquired Jason Johnson today, he of the enormous ERA and career underachievement.  Word is that he’s going to start on July 1st, which means we already have that marked on the calendar as a "whatever you’re doing, just don’t put on the TV or the radio or even think about checking the score via your blackberry" day.  Tonight, on the other hand, we’ll be tuned in intently, looking to see if John Lester can build on his fine second outing with another strong effort.  Use this thread to comment on the game.

(and let’s all leave this Paxton Crawford HGH stuff until tomorrow, umkay?)

  • 1-2-3 inning 2 Ks nice star Lester.

    TJ June 21, 2006, 7:09 pm
  • Youk with the leadoff single.
    2-0 to Mark Loretta.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:12 pm
  • Lo with the single. 1/2 nobody out.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:15 pm
  • Loretta singles to left…first and second, no one out.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:15 pm
  • Papi hasn’t been all that clutch lately. Time to break out.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:15 pm
  • Gaaah. Come on, Trot. No squanders here.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:20 pm
  • Royce Clayton looking really lazy there, with the error. No throw to first on a bobble, bringing up Varitek, our stud bases-loaded guy.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:21 pm
  • Sarcasm, of course.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:21 pm
  • And just like that, Varitek leaves them loaded on a weak grounder. He’s very predictable.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • Sox leave the bases loaded. not a good way to start the game.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • I think the Nats became my 2nd least favorite team this past week.

    Nick-YF June 21, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • Damn

    Rob June 21, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • I wonder why Tek is sooooo bad with the sacks full. I mean, he’s just awful in that situation.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:25 pm
  • 2 down on two fly outs to Manny. Lester looking solid so far, but I hesitate to post this so as not to jinx him. Please don’t blame me if something bad happens.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:29 pm
  • SF – And boom, man on. Nice work buddy. :-)

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:30 pm
  • No sooner do I post that then Royce “suckbag” Clayton legs out an infield hit.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:31 pm
  • Gameday is moving much slower than gamecast right now.

    Rob June 21, 2006, 7:31 pm
  • Does V-Tek have bad numbers with the bases loaded career-wise? Or is it just this season?

    Nick-YF June 21, 2006, 7:32 pm
  • I like this kid.
    That’s all I’m going to say…
Unlike a certain author of this blog.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:34 pm
  • I think that Tek’s numbers this year (bases loaded) are actually worse than previous years. The back end of the lineup is not as string as the previous years. With Mueller and Millar gone we have lost some of the pop.

    Rob June 21, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • career

    TJ June 21, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • 3-18 this year. 11-59 from 2003-2005, so 14-77 the last four years. That’s a .181 average.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • Tek’s always been bad with the bases loaded. He didn’t hit his first grand slam until last season.
    2-out single for AGon.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Who are you referring to, Lockland? Not me, I hope.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • lowell and Youk have proved as much if not more pop the Mueller and Millar the past 2 seasons.

    TJ June 21, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Papa Jack did some good work with Agon.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Yeah TJ…missed that word career in the type set.

    Rob June 21, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Varitek is basically hitting the same as he has with the bases loaded, except he’s on pace to be in that situation even more than he has, with 18 at-bats already.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:40 pm
  • Bases plugged again.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • Youk is consistent, Lowell seems to hit better at Fenway from what I’ve seen. I might be half crazed though. Seems like Lowell (seems, not is) is just so quiet in what he is doing that you do not take his bat into consideration most of the time.

    Rob June 21, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • Papi!!!!!!!!

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • SALAMI TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • Grand slam!!

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • I love that big bastard.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • does that qualify as cluthch??

    TJ June 21, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • 1st pitch grand slam no less

    Rob June 21, 2006, 7:43 pm
  • A nice way to come out of the rut he seemed to be in.

    Rob June 21, 2006, 7:43 pm
  • Two out GS no less.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • I am still curious to know who Lockland was referring to regarding not liking Lester.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • I was just catching up on Today’s posts. Paxton Crawford?!? WTF? The drugs didn’t do him any good. I never liked that guy. Marginal talent, and I never bought that whole injury while getting out of bed story. He can rot in Arkansas; I think he’s trying to sqeeze a few more minutes of dubious fame and dollars out of his “career”. Change his name from Crawford to Canseco.

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • CRAP! I missed a Papi slam posting about Paxton freakin Crawford??

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 7:46 pm
  • I was a guy that just didn’t understand the insane Youk love people had when he was in the system, I just didn’t see it for some reason. I was a blind man that now has sight and it is a very pretty sight.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:46 pm
  • SF, sorry man, should have cleared that up, Papi got in the way…
I was just joking about the your jinx comment, not saying you didn’t like him.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:48 pm
  • I love these 2 out rallies!

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 7:48 pm
  • I dunno, Tom. He may be capitalizing, but how? He might be getting a little press, but what else? A book deal? It sounds like Paxton is painting a relatively believable picture of the game in the early 2000s, when the juicing was clearly out of control. We shouldn’t be so naive to think the Sox were perfectly clean.

    SF June 21, 2006, 7:49 pm
  • I liked the no Paxton talk until tomorrow rule, call me crazy.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 7:50 pm
  • Soriano with the ribbie. Now 4-1 Sox.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:52 pm
  • Inning over.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 7:58 pm
  • Really good micked up spot right there.

    NeffSox June 21, 2006, 8:10 pm
  • “Soriano saying he still isn’t to sure how he likes left field, Youk saying LF is easy, don’t have to think very much.” Pretty good stuff.

    NeffSox June 21, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • Lester with 7 k’s through 4.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:14 pm
  • Where’d everyone go? I left and when I came back everyone was gone. :( (Except for NeffSox, but you weren’t here earlier, so I guess I’m not all alone after all. :)

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • Still herem just been watching the gamecast and the NYM/CIN game.

    Rob June 21, 2006, 8:18 pm
  • Dinnertime. can’t get out of cooking, Laura. Back in a bit.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:18 pm
  • Ahhhh…I had ice cream for dinner. Seriously. I went to Newport Creamery with my Mom and Gram, and we had sundaes. It was delicious too.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:20 pm
  • Mark Loretta has three hits already tonight. That is most excellent.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • Do they have Moosetracks? That’s our household’s absolute fave. We’d love some right now, unfortunately NYC is bereft of Moosetracks.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • Come on Manny

    Rob June 21, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • Don’t know SF. I ALWAYS get coffee ice cream. My favorite.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • Manny with the long fly out.

    Rob June 21, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • 6 LOB through 4. Wasted opportunities…

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • Jon Lester is pitching great. I doubt he’ll give up a run the rest of the game.
    Back to the Yanks thread.

    Nick-YF June 21, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • Oooh. Lester squeezed on that 1-2 pitch.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • That’s old, Nick. As you well know. It doesn’t work the second time.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:32 pm
  • SF, I didn’t say he was smart. Maybe he’s looking for a book or maybe he just likes the publicity. I was never assuming the Sox were any cleaner than any other team (except for the Yankees, of course!), but what is the point of this revelation? He’s now one of the less than 1% of players who admit they were cheaters, while tossing the team that gave him an opportunity and fellow players under the bus. He was/is a nobody. Frankly, I’ve been waiting for the media to figure out that ballplayers might be using hgh, but then again I have a bit of an attitude problem with most sports media and the hypocrisy of the performance enhancing drugs issue. I just think he has nothing to offer the issue other than getting national media attention.

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 8:32 pm
  • Can’t argue with much of that, Tom. Except if this kind of stuff spurs MLB to crack down on HGH as well then that’s a good thing, as far as I am concerned, collateral damage and all.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:35 pm
  • Wow, Lester squeezed again, on a nearly ideal pitch on the outside corner. Tito looks annoyed. He should be. That’s 5 outs this inning Lester’s had to get, basically.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Now 9 k’s for Lester. Just wow. This kid is awesome.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • And he whiffs Soriano!

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • So SF, what did you make for dinner?

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • Trot with the leadoff double. Nice.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • Pork chops, sauteed onions with balsamic vinegar, and pumpkin ravioli with pecorino cheese and brown butter.
As an aside, why isn’t Trot on third? LAZY!!!

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:42 pm
  • Tek up with the bases not loaded. Cue: single!

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • That sounds good, SF, but I don’t eat poor, helpless little animals, so I wouldn;t eat the pork.
    Urgh, double play.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • Inning over, but the four run lead is back.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:44 pm
  • I’m off to put on my pj’s and get ready to watch America’s Got Talent. That means that you have to put twice the kinetic energy into rooting for the Sox because I will be turning the game. So long.

    Laura June 21, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • I don’t think they really can crack down on hgh, since there are no reliable tests for it. Performance enhancing drugs are probably here to stay. I am not convinced they help all that much in hitting a baseball, or in pitching, although they certainly help in healing and training in general. I’m not saying they are not harmful, or that they are ok, but I just find the way the whole issue has been covered to be rife with sensationalism and hypocrisy.
Paxton Crawford was no Jon Lester!!

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • Lester clearly tired. Almost 100 pitchs and missing the plate badly. Someone ready in the pen?

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • What does Laura have against balsam?

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 8:52 pm
  • Bravo, Jon Lester. 6IP, 1 run, 10Ks. We know it’s just the Nats, but still, the kid looks very impressive, poised, and like a guy who has major league talent, even if we expect bumps along the way. What a big addition so far.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • What a fantastic effort by Lester. The Nats are pretty crappy, but I am very impressed with the way he handled himself out there.
Now it’s time for the bullpen (cringe).

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • SF, you’re typing too fast.

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 8:57 pm
  • 10Ks, 10 freaking Ks, nice job Theo.
    I really like this kid.
Ok bullpen, give the kid the win.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 8:58 pm
  • Duquette drafted this guy, Lockland, not Theo.

    SF June 21, 2006, 8:58 pm
  • Agon, I’m liking his new bat.

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 8:59 pm
  • AG with the double, then Youk ropes the first pitch right to RF. 1 down.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:00 pm
  • Ok, thanks for not trading him Theo. :-)
    My bad.

    Anonymous June 21, 2006, 9:01 pm
  • Lo grounds to second, advancing AG. Papi draws the IBB. 1/3 for Manny.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:01 pm
  • Walk Papi to pitch to Manny…this might be a serious mistake.

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 9:03 pm
  • NESN with a nice graphic: Manny is 4-7 following a Papi IBB. Make that 5-8 as Manny singles! 6-1 Sox.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:03 pm
  • Manny.

    Anonymous June 21, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • Never piss off Manny…

    Tom sf June 21, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • I love when they cut to Manny as they are walking Papi to get to him, he always has this angry smile on his face, the only man that can pull of the “angry smile.”

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • Wow.
    I’m loving this.
    Stanton? Really?

    LocklandSF June 21, 2006, 9:11 pm
  • GO SOX

    TJ June 21, 2006, 9:13 pm
  • My earlier post about Rudy Seanez is quickly becoming dated and irrelevant. He looks awful.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • Nice curve gets Damian Jackson. One down, man on second. 9-2 Sox. It’s almost bedtime.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • Nice K by Seanez. He continues to be brilliant and DelCarmen will not be needed as Frank can go back to his nap.

    attackgerbil June 21, 2006, 9:26 pm
  • And all of a sudden Seanez looks good again – 2 down on another K.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:26 pm
  • Inning over – Soriano fouls to Youk.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:26 pm
  • G’night, all. Off to the computerless room.

    SF June 21, 2006, 9:27 pm
  • I just wanted to pass along this entry about Ozzie Guillen’s comments yesterday.
