Latex: Sox-Tigers Gamer III

You thought we couldn’t score runs before? Today’s is a lineup devoid of Mike Lowell and Mark Loretta — although for good reason. Both are banged up, and the Sox’ next foe is, of course, the Yankees. The Sox will be facing a pitcher making his major league debut, which would give us hope for a win — if we weren’t putting Matt Clement (with a darn near miraculous winning percentage of .500) on the mound. Still, he’s been watching video of happier times this week. Maybe he’s discovered something that will make him the mediocre Matt Clement of yore (as opposed to the more recent version that can only be described as horrific).

  • Hmm. Gameday is obviously not working properly today. It shows Matt Clement pitching. After 3 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 9 batters faced, 40 pitches. That certainly can’t be, so it must be a different pitcher. Or something.

  • I like that one, airk. Glad it didn’t QUITE happen.

  • Clement came out of the game suddenly, described later as “not injury-related.” Perhaps an asthma issue? Upset stomach?
Now Leyland is losing his marbles. Gotta love the guy.

  • The Sox score three straight runs on walks by Ortiz, Manny, and Nixon.

  • Well, the Yanks went to Detroit and took 3 out of 4 and then the Sox took another pair from them.
Although I despise the MFYs, I can’t help but take a certain amount of pride in the fact that the AL East spanked the Tigers in their home park.
The Tigers are a solid enough team, but it just goes to show that beating up on the Royals does not a contender make.

  • This is what Clement said after the game:
“I got a little bit out of sorts, I guess, over the last year and a half, to the point where, I guess, it hit a head and was really working negatively for me,” said Clement. “I was pleased with the way the ball came out of my hand.”
The first time I read that, I thought he said “I got hit in the head” – and then re-read it to clarify. Something tells me he really meant to say that though.
Good outing though, and evidently he did the work he needed to do after last time. Hopefully we get the opposite of last year – can we even expect a decent second half?
