Lazy Sunday: Yanks-Tribe ST Gamer

It’s a pretty day, the clocks are ahead, and the ballgame is on the tube. Grab, a cold one, sit back, and enjoy a taste of things to come. Wang, Rivera, Hughes, and Proctor are scheduled to pitch for the Yanks. Bronson Sardinha, who appears to be a new favorite of the powers-that-be—and why not? He’s been terrific thus far, and closed 06 strong in Triple-A—gets a shot in the three hole. Josh Barfield will lead off for the Tribe. His cannon-armed papa should be familiar to Bomber fans. Rest of the lineups after the jump.

  • Uh, what time do you think it is, YF? The clocks went forward last night.

  • Girardi back in the booth, and with a fresh buzz cut, his signature look. Nice to have him around. FWIW, he describes Wang as an “ace for years to come.” Ace. I don’t know. Maybe #2 or #3 for years to come?
News: Pettitte to go against the Sox tomorrow.

    YF March 11, 2007, 1:05 pm
  • Meanwhile, DMat is on the mound for the Sox. I’ll be channel flipping.

  • From the YES Phil Hughes profile:
“I’m kinda the layed-back one in the family.”
    Best pitch: Fastball
    Needs most work: Change-up
Favorite team and player as a kid: Red Sox and Mo Vaughn
Dad’s favorite team, still: Sox (But that’ll change)
Pretty composed kid, like a young Mussina without the Stanford degree.

  • Nice 1st for DMat. Flyball and 2 Ks. The O’s looked befuddled at the plate.

  • And some retread from 90210 only gets a few of the words from the national anthem wrong. But at least he dedicated it to Murcer.
    PLAY BALL ALREADY!!!

    YF March 11, 2007, 1:18 pm
  • Wang up in the zone a bit, but still gets Barfield to ground out 6-3. Not like his dad there. Jess could fly out on ball that came to the plate underground.

  • Delucci homer on fastball right over the plate.

    YF March 11, 2007, 1:23 pm

  • Sardinha with a nice swing grounds 4-3. JD to 3rd.

    YF March 11, 2007, 1:32 pm
  • And Alex rips one off Carmona’s leg, it bounces right to Aubrey who makes the tag, 1-3. Bad luck for Alex and the Yanks; that shoulda been a hit!

    YF March 11, 2007, 1:36 pm
  • Clearly DMat is a disappointment! Infield single! How does that happen?

  • YF, I’m not watching. Do you get a sense that Wang is experimenting with new pitches. I know that he spent this off-season focused on becoming more of a strike out pitcher. Any new pitches on 2 strike counts?

    Nick-YF March 11, 2007, 1:47 pm
  • Lugo drives in Lowell with a groundout. 1-0 Sox. Youk smokes one to left. Cora scores, Youk to 2nd. 2-0 Sox.

    Whatever March 11, 2007, 1:48 pm
  • I watched the first 1.5 innings in the gym, soundless, and I can’t help but add a little commentary. Those first two innings from Wang are why we should really not pay attention to the box scores. It appeared as if Wang threw about 90% fastballs to the first 5 hitters, something he will NOT do during the regular season. And, though he has 2 Ks through two, the one to Peralta was both a mistake pitch and a marginal call by the umpire on a hung slider or curve — it was hard to tell because it was frankly a very poor pitch.
But the bottom line is that when Wang threw his slider, he threw it really well. These two innings looked like a practice session for him where he was really just working on his fastball.
