Lester is More … er: Sox-Angels Gamer I

Hot teams have wilted at Fenway before — and the Angels have a tendency to wilt anytime the heat gets turned up a little. Now they come to Boston, where it seems they’ve struggled every year since 1995. Let’s see how the second-hottest team in the AL does this weekend in the perpetual playoff atmosphere of Boston.

One kid we know doesn’t wilt is Jon Lester, who has pitched on the edge all season but has yet to lose a game and has a dandy ERA of about 3. He’ll be facing some hot bats though, and that penchant for walks and loaded bases just isn’t compatible with an undefeated record.

This series — against a playoff-caliber team with strong pitching and good hitting — could answer a lot of questions for the Sox. Let’s hope the answers are positve. Comment away!

  • Well, that’s one way to keep the Angels from winning — rain, rain go away (it’s expected to, in about an hour)…

  • I hope everyone catches The Gerb’s great post on Mullet Night, below. Don’t want it to get lost in the fray of todays many fine posts. Anyway, it’s something for you SFs to do before you start losing tonight.

  • Nothing particularly special from the lineup, either. Everyone’s rested hopefully, so whenever the rain leaves, hopefully they’ll start beating up Kelvim Escobar.

  • I just had a two-hour power outage. That sucked. I’m glad the game was delayed, because I’m going to be in britain next week and won’t be seeing any baseball, so I want to hear one last game with decent announcers. I keep telling myself that it’s only one week and then i’ll be back home with my Sox. :)

  • Cool, Laura. I hope you have a great time and take lots of pictures. It’s weird, but when I travel away from readily-available baseball, it’s really, really fun to get up in the morning, buy a paper, and read scores and stories from games that are a couple of days old. Hard to describe.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 28, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • YES! I’m totally with that, Bill.
The Carlos Lee era is off to a not-so-rousing start as the Rangers are currently losing to the KC Royals(!!!!) 7-1.

    yankeemonkey July 28, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • YM, what’s your source? I evidently have only part of the story.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 28, 2006, 9:45 pm
  • Contreras’ situation was completely diff. The stupid Yankee front office didn’t recognize that Jose’s game was suffering due to the fear that his daughter and wife would not be able ever make it to the US. Castro squeezed his fam when he found out about his defection. If Cash and co would have waited until the wife and daughter made to the US safely, instead of sending him to the Chi-town, they would have reaped the same benefits the White Sox have been enjoying for the last two seasons.

    bloodyank78 July 28, 2006, 9:47 pm
  • Peter Abraham at Lohud (there’s a link on the sidebar). He claims to have received an email from friend with Cuban contacts….We’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

  • It sucks how you start to love players and they might not even be ghere a full season… If the Sox get Tejada or Lugo, our AGon Era might be all of four months…

    Paul SF July 28, 2006, 10:32 pm
  • Ohhhh, Loretta! :-(

    Paul SF July 28, 2006, 10:34 pm
  • Paul it won’t happen. Tejada’s contract is too high, the Orioles want too much in return and the poop on Lugo is that he would be part of a multi-team deal. I’ll be shocked if either of them come to town to stay.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 28, 2006, 10:35 pm
  • I posed this the other night for next year:
Given Pedroia’s succes in Pawtucket this year, what to you do with him, and Loretta and Gonzo whose contract’s expire after this season? I try to resign them both and start the season with DP in Pawtucket.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 28, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • I think DP’s going to need to play in the majors next year… He’s too good to keep at AAA two years in a row. As much as I love M-Lor, his production’s only going to go down, and Pedroia is only going to go up…

    Paul SF July 28, 2006, 10:43 pm
  • sooo close. Lowell tried to pull a fast one that could’ve been a triple play. Then the double play fails because of Youk’s short feet.

    airk July 28, 2006, 10:44 pm
  • Gonzo’s also a one-year fix, which is why it makes sense for the Sox to try to swing a multi-team trade whereby they end up with Tejada or Lugo…

    Paul SF July 28, 2006, 10:45 pm
  • Lester gets out of it, only thrown 85 pitches through 6… This is really a splendid game from him, particularly considering it’s against a non-Royals offense…

    Paul SF July 28, 2006, 11:02 pm
