Let the Face Rubbing Commence!

World Series rings will be issued to players and coaches prior to the home opener April 11 against the Yankees, scheduled for 3:05 p.m.

Be there or be square, guys.  And this really shouldn’t be an issue for the Yankees, truthfully. Why shouldn’t the Sox get their rings on opening day, no matter who they are playing (if it were the O’s I’d still have pressed for an opening day ceremony, spring bunting and all, it just feels right).  It’s a sweet coincidence they are playing the Bombers.

And I’ll savor that ceremony regardless of what Schilling and RJ do on opening day.  Here’s a prediction: if RJ throws a gem, at least one tabloid headline links the Yankees victory to the ring ceremony (as if!) with "Lord of the Rings" splashed aside the Unit’s fugly mug in bold print.

  • Doesn’t bother us. Just a little more fuel to the Yankee fire. Also, it will be nice to watch the Sox brief moment of joy flopped directly into sorrow and frustration and bitterness.

  • Yes, of course, that’s how it will work. Just like how these last few years of failure (historic failure at that!) have dampened your memories of the most recent Yanks World Championship. Though it’s now been so long since they won anything even I can’t remember who they defeated.
I actually can’t wait for the sheer joy that the ring ceremony is going to impart, a beautiful reminder of this wonderful autumn past, albeit without 1/3 of that team in attendance. For once the bunting in the stadium will make me think of a successful playoff run instead of the opening day hope of eradicating previous failures. I can’t wait to see the tears on fans faces during the ceremony, and I also can’t wait to watch the Yankees do their best to act nonchalantly and avert their own eyes during the ceremony, like it doesn’t hurt (the press here in New York will predictably call them “consummate professionals” the next day for their calm display of pent-up jealousy). Any opening day loss will mean zippo and YF knows this well from his own experiences.

  • Oh, how cute. We hope SF has plenty of tissues on hand for himself and his compatriots. And it’s of course nice to see that he’s gotten a head start on the season, and is already smearing this year’s Yankee squad for…good behavior! Yeah, it’ll hurt. For like 9 minutes, or however long the Fenway genies can draw out their little ceremony. We’re sure Affleck will be involved. Won’t that be nice?
Anyhow, while the Sox are out there weeping and calling each other crazy idiots and pretending Stephen King isn’t creeping everyone out, the Yanks will be back in their clubhouse, watching video or whatever it is they do before games. A-Rod can hit the stairmaster. Jorge can call his kids. Glanville can negotiate long-term lease options on high value Philadelphia commercial properties.
And then, after all of the bullshit, they will walk out onto the field and begin a season long ass-kicking of your Red Sox, who are TOTALLY DOOMED. That’s right, DOOMED.

  • Wow, when did YF get on the bitter train? 26 titles and the guy acts as if the world has turned on him. Actually, come to think of it, maybe it has. This role reversal is hysterical, what with YF playing the bitter one. Quoth McDonald’s, I’m lovin’ it.

  • I’m a Sox fan and I think the more important news of the day is that Schill threw off a mound for the first time post surgery and he didn’t have pain in his ankle.

  • YF seems to be indulging in some desperate one-upmanship here.
