Let’s Make it Two in a Row: Twins-Sox Gamer VI

Well, some good news in Soxland, finally.  The Sox won a one-run game.  David Ortiz took batting practice and, according to the Globe, may be getting ready for minor league rehab.  Oh, and Jon Lester is starting.

Count me among the many who (foolishly) called for Lester to be sent down to find an out pitch, to head to Pawtucket to hone his skills against minor league talent.  Turns out that Boston was the right place for him to learn, working with John Farrell, Terry Francona, and Jason Varitek, along with his fellow pitchers on the roster.  Lester has emerged, and we couldn’t be happier to have been utterly wrong.  Tonight he faces off against Nick Blackburn, another Twin pitcher who, like the new Lester (5 walks in his last 41.2 IP), walks almost nobody.  Last night the Sox waited one out against another fine control pitcher in Scott Baker, hopefully they won’t force their pitcher(s) to throw another shutout this evening.  Comment here throughout tonight’s action.

  • Lester has become a stud. I can’t believe that people weren’t saying he was snubbed for the all star game. But, I guess his early season struggles, and the love of win/loss and ERA wins out over realizing what a good pitcher he has become over the last few months. I think he’s made the most starts in the majors this year as well.

  • Not to hijack this, but anyone want FanFest tickets for Friday? I’ll go for 25$ for a pair.. something came up and I can’t make it. Grumbles.

    Lar July 8, 2008, 6:19 pm
  • Lester definitely was the unsung hero thus far, much like Rasner was for the Yanks before he realized he’s Rasner..

    Lar July 8, 2008, 6:20 pm
  • Selfishly, I’m happy to have Lester relaxing and resting up for the second half.

  • Damn, unusual error by Lowell.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:07 pm
  • But wiped away by caught stealing.

    rootbeerfloat July 8, 2008, 7:10 pm
  • Caught stealing! Yeah Cash!

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:10 pm
  • Err, yeah Lester! And then a walk to even things out.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:11 pm
  • Morneau walks, not a bad idea. 19 fastballs and 1 cutter so far.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:15 pm
  • And Lester gets out of the inning! 22 pitches, only 10 for strikes, but there’s no damage. Hopefully he’ll settle down in the 2nd.
Cause let’s face it–that walk to Morneau was half intentional.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:18 pm
  • “love of win/loss and ERA wins out”
What’s wrong with Lester’s ERA? Snubbed!! Snubbed, I tell you!!!

    Devine July 8, 2008, 7:18 pm
  • Jacoby with the lead-off single! We needed that.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:21 pm
  • I say walk Morneau every single time his foot goes into the box

    Brad July 8, 2008, 7:21 pm
  • How about Daisuke’s ERA/win total? Snubbed!

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:23 pm
  • Drew is god-like. Doubles in Jacoby, 1-0 Sox.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:23 pm
  • Well the Sox’ strategy is “swing” tonight. Two hits and a run, and yet he still only uses 12 pitches this inning.
But hey, as long as we’re scoring runs I don’t care if we’re not patient.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 7:26 pm
  • Young apparently trapped that one. Can’t get a break.

Back to the kitchen to finish making dinner.

  • Rod – You’re rooting for the yanks??

    rootbeerfloat July 8, 2008, 8:05 pm
  • rbf- would you not root for the O’s against the d-rays? well the yanks are closer to the O’s than they are to us. you gotta root for the yanks during this series.

    Anonymous July 8, 2008, 8:09 pm
  • but…I….just….can’t

    rootbeerfloat July 8, 2008, 8:10 pm
  • I’ve decided that since I physically canno root for either the Yanks (most-hated team) or the Rays (second-most hated), I’m just going to have to hope the Sox keep winning. They benefit no matter who wins in the Bronx.
Should also note this Twins series is a battle between first and second in the Wild Card race.
Lester not having one of his best starts tonight, unfortunately. Still, if the Sox are only going to score one run, it’s hard to fault him.

    Paul SF July 8, 2008, 8:11 pm
  • My rule is: no strategic rooting until September. Until then (and maybe even then), rooting for the Yankees is crazy.

    stuck working July 8, 2008, 8:12 pm
  • A good inning from Lester. The Sox seem intent on forcing their starter to throw a shutout. Score one every night and the Sox will not win many games. They have to break out of this soon, right? Or are pitchers just reaping the benefit of a six-man offense, basically?

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:28 pm
  • Pedro extends the hitting streak to 16, singles through the hole to left.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:31 pm
  • Drew with the right idea going the other way, but just doesn’t get great wood on the ball, two down.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • Manny continues to be powerless. Last night he had a couple of solid singles, but he’s not driving anything.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield and Justin Masterson have been tagged with 12 losses in which they’ve thrown quality starts. Looks like Lester’s joining that unfortunate parade…

    Paul SF July 8, 2008, 8:38 pm
  • Hell of a play by Pedroia after the leadoff double, saved a run for sure but now there’s a guy at third with only one out.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • Bah, flare to left scores another run.
This lead looks insurmountable the way the bats are going.
Tough luck for Lester, forced to basically be perfect again. He hasn’t been great, but he’s had zero breathing room.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:43 pm
  • Well, not anymore… 4 ER means no QS.

    Paul SF July 8, 2008, 8:44 pm
  • i’m getting the feeling lester and cash aren’t the best battery mates. the sox would be better served giving tek a break on a beckett or dice-k start.
is rondell white the firstbase coach for the twins?

    sf rod July 8, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • Paul:
Do you get a QS if you throw nine innings and only give up four runs? If the rule is 6/3, that’s a 4.50 ERA. A 9/4 effort is a 4.00 ERA. But is the latter NOT a QS while the former is? I think that is the case, and therefore this statistic is limited.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:49 pm
  • Lowell out softly to short. Man, this is like watching little leaguers. I got pilloried for being so negative last night, but this team’s offense doesn’t deserve much optimism, right?

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Youk triples!

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • BABIP bad luck, WTF. Moss slices one about 6″ foul down the left field line.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • And now he’s down 0-2 with Youk at third.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Moss gets his job done, sac fly to left scoring Youk. Now we need LFRS to get on and clear the pitcher for the eighth.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • LFRS could have taken a soft one on the bicep there but fails to lean in. Weak!!

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • Lugo shows bunt but pulls back, then fouls one off. Full count.
Lugo’s OPS (not OBP) for July is .368. Wow.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 8:58 pm
  • LFRS singles! Nicely done!

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:58 pm
  • Reverse jynx gets Lugo on in all its glory.
    Casey pinch-hitting for Cash now.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • had coco, tek, or lugo on saturday been able to do what moss just did, we probably would have had another win in that series.
cash lifted for casey. tek, find your gear.

    sf rod July 8, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • and the call to the bullpen, Gardenhire coming out. Probably a good move – Blackburn getting hit more this inning.

    SF July 8, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • Cash up. Does Tito dare PH Tek? Whither Casey? Or is it Cash getting another AB?

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • 4 runs in 9 is not a QS. A QS is 6 OR MORE IP allowing 3 or less hits.

    IronHorse (yf) July 8, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • Wrong on all counts: Jeff Bailey, who is quickly down 0-2. I’d rather have Casey up there.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • Just kidding, Bailey in for Casey. Ugh.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • Is Reyes El Guapo’s twin?

    I'mBillMcNeal July 8, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • Casey was hitting .350 against lefties. Why is Bailey in there?
    And he K’s looking.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • So Tito sends up Bailey, who goes down on three straight pitches. Way to send up a seasoned vet in a pinch, Francona.
Tito hasn’t had a great tactical year thus far – that was a head-scratcher to me.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Well THAT was a quality at-bat.

    I'mBillMcNeal July 8, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Yeah, IH, it’s a silly statistical loophole. A complete game four-run effort is just better than 3ER in the minimum six. Stupid.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:05 pm
  • Lester back out there, at 102 pitches.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:06 pm
  • Mauer slaps a ball through the gap. Lester still out there.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:06 pm
  • So Tito actually announced Casey, then pulled him when the lefty came in. Nice work by the manager to drain his bench and end up with a rookie staring at three strikes basically.
    Bad job by our manager.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • And now Lester back out. Not sure I like this either.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • Another single. Watch Tito amble to the mound now.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • “allowing 3 or less hits”
Ummm…I met 3 or more RUNS, obviously.

    IronHorse (yf) July 8, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • Morneau barely hits one through the gap. Lester’s inability to get those lefties out is not good.
ANd now a righty at bat… and Lester stays in?

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • Nope, Tito leaving Lester out there to work out of it. That’s some serious confidence in the bullpen.
    Theo, are you watching?

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • Has Francona gone stupid?

    TJ July 8, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • Lester gets ahead of the righty but he’s battling now. Lester shouldn’t have come in against him.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:11 pm
  • I assumed Tito was leaving Lester in to get the two lefties out. Shocked to see him still in.
He eventually K’s Monroe though, and he’s out now. Aardsma in.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • K. Now Tito comes out, Lester up near 120 pitches.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • Aardsma has a live arm. And a wild one.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • And another ground ball through the gap. That’s three of those this inning. Frustrating.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • What inning are you in?

    IronHorse (yf) July 8, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • And there’s single, likely the final nail. Another run charged to Lester. Why the hell did Tito push him so far? What was the point?
Painful team to watch, from Tito on down.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Good DP turned by the Sox, but not until after that big fifth run.
This is the inning for the Sox, I would think. Last chance, to an extent, with the top of the order.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • Ooh, Ells gets a break on a check swing, looked like he went. 1-1 the count. Come on, Jacoby.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:23 pm
  • Well the crowd is getting behind the team at least. Loud cheer going for Ellsbury.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:23 pm
  • FAIR BALL! Ellsbury doubles. Two hits for him tonight, we’ve needed that from him.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:24 pm
  • Double leading off, a flare to left. A little BABIP luck finally!
    Gardenhire yanks Reyes.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:24 pm
  • tito basically forced gardenhire not to manage tonite. it’s like a nite off for ronny.

    sf rod July 8, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • I smell a Drew homerun coming up.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:27 pm
  • Pedroia slaps one over the infield. Two on, no outs for Drew.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 9:29 pm

    IronHorse (yf) July 8, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Ha! LFRS tries to bunt, misses, and Mauer throws down to first as Moss was way off the bag. Morneau swings to tag Moss diving back into the bag but Moss had actually taken off for second, and makes it safely. Funny play.

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:39 pm

Come on, Paps, nail this down!!

    SF July 8, 2008, 9:40 pm

Great comeback. Kudos to the offense for stepping up!

  • That’s a nice win. Good to have another one-run win under our belts, and a late-inning comeback feels good. Would be even better to get some blowouts, though, and not need these heart-attack contests…

  • nice to steal this one.
star of the game goes to aardsma. sorry moss. his double play inducement gave the sox a chance. without that chance, your hit meant nothing.

  • And we gained a game on TB! 3 back now!

  • A damn fine win, gentlemen.

  • It’s been a long time since I tuned into a Red Sox game and wound up happy I did so.

  • OH MY GOD Rich Harden to the Cubs.

    Atheose July 8, 2008, 10:07 pm
  • ESPN is stupid. Question: Who would you pick right now, Ortiz/Ramirez or Mauer/Morneau? Obviously the answer right now is Mauer/Morneau (cause they’re healthy) but Ortiz/Ramirez is far better when healthy. It’s not even close.

  • “OH MY GOD Rich Harden to the Cubs.”
What’r you bitching about, Ath? I’m the one who will have to hear about it for the next month. Until he hurts his arm and is lost for the season. And then he becomes the Century Excuse.

  • Not to be lost in that trade is that Matt Murton was sent to Oakland. Theo had to give the Cubs Murton to take Nomie off our hands.

  • “ESPN is stupid.”
I know you’re not just figuring this out.

  • “ESPN is stupid.”
More evidence: They give Jeter (henseforth The Sacred Cow) a Web Gem from that game Tuesday night. He made a real nice play going to his right to get a ball deep in the hole, got off one of his jump-turning throws, but then Cano saved his ass because the throw was a good 4-5 feet off 2B toward CF and in the dirt. Without the nice grab by Cano, that ball’s in RF.

  • Yup, Varitek is so indispensable, they started Cash with Lester on the mound. But I bet he was calling pitches from the bench, right!?. Looks like Tito actually wants to win something this year.

  • I saw that Bill, it was pretty funny. That jump-throw is the most overrated thing in baseball, though it does look nice.

    Atheose July 9, 2008, 8:46 am
  • My point proven: Jeter is The Sacred Cow.
And I don’t know what TSC has to do with Tek.
Yes, Assface-YF. Obviously Tito is finally srtarting to pay attention to you.
Of course, Ass-munch-YF, if you paid attention, you’d know that the Red Sox had a day game scheduled for Wednesday following a night game, so Tito starts Cash starts the night game and Tek starts the day game. And seeing that Tek went 2-for 4 with an RBI, that would be a good decision. Pretty basic managing.
