Let’s Piss Off the Yankees Fans, Vol. 1

Sacrilege! Baseball Prospectus has an entry here (subscription required) proclaiming the current Cardinals more dangerous than the 1927 Yankees!

A sample:

With all four players [ed: Renteria, Rolen, Pujols, Edmonds] between a .463 and .483 MLVr, the 2004 Cardinals are surely the deepest and steadiest Murderer’s Row in history, and maybe the best.

Let’s see how long it takes intrepid and ego-bashed Yankees fans to attempt a similar, opposing piece involving ridiculous comparisons.

As for me, I think it is almost comically difficult to compare teams across eras, particularly across eras involving a change in the color barrier. It’s interesting to see the statistics, without a doubt, but to proclaim that either team is the “best” is sheer folly.

So go to it, Bombers fans! Start defending!

  • First, it seems to me there should be some relational component if you’re going to compare across periods—ie, how much better is this group of Cardinals than the average 2004 lineup? But all of this comparison of obscure statistics is waste of time. There’s one easy way to see which team was more powerful: just look at the record. On August 10, 1927, the Yankees were 76-32 (.704) and had scored 699 runs while allowing just 428. The Cards are currently 72-28 (.655) and have scored 589 while allowing 449. So, I’ll leave the math to you, but clearly the boys at Prospectus need to spend less time with their slide rules.

  • Not sure that computes. How does a team that is 72-28 have a .655 winning percentage? The Cards have a .720 winning percentage, better than the ’27 Yanks.

  • Typo. The Cards are 72-38. But the key point, if we’re talking about hitting, is that the Yanks, on August 10, were averaging 6.47 runs per game. The Cards are at 5.35. Now, if we accept Prospectus’s contention that you can compare across eras, it’s ridiculous to argue that the Cards are a more formidable offensive team. They score more than a run less per game!

  • There is nothing to discus until, and if, the Cardinals win the World Series. And so far, they aint won nothing yet. I am not so sure that an inspired group of cubbies might not prevent them from even getting there….
