Matryoshka Sox

From LocklandSF..
A while back I mentioned that my now father-in-law got me a Russian Matryoshka doll from a street vendor in Moscow that commerates the 2004 Red Sox WS team. I love the fact that Damon is the smallest. It slipped my mind until today when I was cleaning my man room. Here are the pics, enjoy.

  • Haha, that’s very cool. And completely unrepresentative of the players in every way.

  • I have vivid memories (actually, some of my earliest memories) of being fascinated by my mom’s set of matryoshka dolls that she let me play with when I was a toddler. I played with them for hours upon hours. She bought them in Stalingrad (now St. Petersburg) when she visited there as an exchange student to Finland in 1967.
edit: yes, thanks Ath, I did mean Leningrad.. my mistake. Have to reply here because I can’t get to the site itself right now, only the admin interface..

  • Those are very cool. I wish I had a “man room”. I would put a TV in the garage, but I fear that I might not want/need to go back into the house that often if I did that.

  • Nice AG (you mean Leningrad, right?). My grandfather had some but didn’t buy them in the country itself, and I used to be fascinated with them. Such a simple toy, but so much fun.
Those above are funny because they look nothing like the players! They all have the same sort-of Latino eyes, and Varitek looks more like Damon than Damon does. I still want some now though!

  • I have the Yankees version, picked up in Red Square a few years ago.

  • Yeah, I love them. They now sit on the cleaned out shelf between my mini replica Fenway Park and my Red Sox Mr. Potato Head.
I just hope Selig doesn’t come after me since there is no way the Matryoshka doll is officially licensed.
    Glad you guys like them.

  • Funny thing I just noticed: Ortiz has a glove in his hand. Silly Russians!

  • neat! – and in other news AL gold glovers announced – Pedroia at second wins! THe outfield selections are abysmal.

  • Without looking at the outfield selections… Hunter/Suzuki/Crawford?

  • Why does Ortiz look like “The Jesus” from Big Lebowski?

  • I was in Russia this summer and got my friend a Red Sox doll. I’ll have to find photos- there was Youk and Mikey Lowell and they looked hilarious.
