It is being reported by ESPN that Don Mattingly is stepping down as the hitting coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Due to some family matters Mattingly will take on a lesser role as the Dodgers major league special assignment coach. "I’m very grateful that the Dodgers have allowed me to take care of these family matters and I hope that everyone can respect our privacy during this time," Mattingly said in a statement issued by the team. "I truly appreciate the support of all Dodger fans since joining the organization and I look forward to helping the team win in 2008 and beyond." Former major leaguer Mike Easler will replace Mattingly. Easler’s fourteen year major league career included stops with both the Red Sox and Yankees. Most recently Easler has spent time as a minor league hitting instructor in the Dodgers organization. Whatever the issue may be, I am sure I am not alone in wishing Donnie Baseball all the best.
