Mess with Texas: Yanks-Rangers Gamer IV

Pudge returns to his old stomping-grounds, Joba gears up for 100-degree weather, and the Yankees take their 2-game win-streak on the road to face the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of baseball.  How bad is Ranger pitching?  They rank last in the AL in starters’ ERA (5.44), last in IP/start (barely above 5.1 IP/start), and theirs are the only starters in the AL off of whom opponents are hitting .300.  How good is their hitting?  With 631 runs they’ve scored almost 100 more runs than the Yankees (538) and they rank first in the AL in this and most other team batting categories (.281 BA; .812 OPS; 1116 H).

The Yankees play 16 of their next 19 on the road and need to get off on the right foot with their young ace on the mound.  Speaking of which, Joba (4-3, 2.24 ERA) has given up 3 runs in three starts (19 IP) but struggled the last time he faced Texas – throwing 91 pitches over four innings in the Yankee loss.  The Rangers send Vicente Padilla (12-5, 4.52 ERA) to the mound who has been pretty solid since coming off the DL.

Yankee line-up follows (Nady working his way up the line-up and Justin Christian running himself into the # 9 hole).  Comment away…

Damon – DH

Jeter – SS

Abreu – RF

A-Rod – 3B

Giambi – 1B

Nady – LF

Cano – 2B

Pudge – C

Christian – CF

Joba – P

  • The Yanks making Padilla look good.
Okay, Abreu just took one the other way for a single. Here’s Clutch-Rod.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:12 pm
  • ARod apparently leading the league in batting average. Of all the things, I’m vaguely surprised at this one. Maybe he’ll get hot and win the triple crown! ;P

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:13 pm
  • And walks in 4 pitches. Almost hit him too. A 6 pitch walk for ARod after dow 0-2.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:16 pm
  • Big G, now without the Stash, is trying to grow a new streak. So to speak. Let’s go Yanks!

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:16 pm
  • Weird seeing him without the caterpillar.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:18 pm
  • Padilla possibly getting squeezed. But since this is a YF, I will ignore that and pretend I didn’t see that.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:19 pm
  • That 2-2 looked legit.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:20 pm
  • Okay, sure, this guy is Padilla, but that’s what this lineup should do more often.
5 pitches for Abreu, 6 pitches for ARod, 8 pitches for Giambi, who, on the 8th pitch, dumps one to center for a single. 1-0 Yanks.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:21 pm
  • Giambi comes through with a single to score Abreu and move ARod to third.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:22 pm
  • Also, a 2 out hit! Yay.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:22 pm
  • Of course, Nady grounds out on the first pitch. Ah well.
Okay, got to go running. Go Yanks!

    Lar August 4, 2008, 8:22 pm
  • Kinsler facing Joba. He flies out to left on the first pitch.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:25 pm
  • Laird down looking for the second out on a slider.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:28 pm
  • Young takes a 1-2 fastball the other way over Cano for a single.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:29 pm
  • Joba starts Hamilton out with a strike. That’s four first-pitch strikes. Hamilton hits a nub in front of the plate. Pudge fields and guns to first. Tough play. Great throw.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:31 pm
  • Byrd makes a great diving catch in right to thieve extra bases from Cano.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • Pudge grounds out 6-3.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:34 pm
  • There hasn’t been a Yankee starter that was this much fun to watch since Gator.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 8:34 pm
  • Christian grounds out 5-3 to end the Yankee 2nd.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:35 pm
  • Nice to see Joba throwing the curve for strikes often today. He was almost all f-ball/slider in his last outing.
Booby Abreu catches one hear the all. Stop the presses.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 8:39 pm
  • Abreu down swinging after fouling off a few 0-2s. Alex up with two away.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • ARod swings at the first two pitches, then takes strike three when he asked for time and didn’t get it.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:53 pm
  • That was a crappy mistake by Alex there. But Padilla is holding the ball for about 8 or 9 seconds once he comes set. It’s insanely frustrating.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Saltalamacchia singles to right to lead off the Rangers 3rd.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • Type that three times fast, Gerb!

    SF August 4, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • Now Salty overslides second on an attempted steal. He had the bag but rolled past the base; Jeter tags him out.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • Vazquez flies out to left.
Now Kinsler doubles to left center.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • Heheh SF…
Jeter makes a great diving stab on the apron on a grounder by Laird to save a run. No play to first but kept Kinsler from scoring.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Whew… Joba suckered Young, who can’t check his swing on the breaking pitch away. Huge way to get out of a jam.
    That was tense.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Joba is the anti-Clay. Composed, gets out of jams, etc. The Sox game is like the exact opposite of this one.

    SF August 4, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • No doubt on that swing, as Giambi launches it to the second deck in right. POW.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • Nady wasup 2-0 but then goes down swinging. Cano comes to the plate with one out.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:11 pm
  • Cano works a long long at bat, then strokes a payoff pitch upper deck, not far from where Giambi put his.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:14 pm
  • Singleton says Cano’s dinger measured 432 feet.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • Pudge grounds out 4-3.
    Christian grounds out 6-3.
Yankees lead 3-0 in the middle of four.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:17 pm
  • Hamilton out on a broken bat grounder that almost gets past Cano.. nice play by Robi.
    Byrd walks.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:24 pm
  • David Murphy homers to right, scoring Byrd. Man these Texas kids rake.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • Saltalamacchia down swinging to end the Texas fourth, Yankees leading 3-2.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • Time to feed the kid. Catch you all later.

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • Balks Damon home – 4-2.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 9:43 pm
  • Young smacks a 3 run HR. The non-out coming back to haunt him..
Well, Yanks should be beating up Padilla more.. so we’ll see.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 9:56 pm
  • Joba’s pitch count getting high, and also now throwing behind people..

    Lar August 4, 2008, 9:59 pm
  • Joba coming out of the game – possible shoulder injury. Let’s hope it’s nothing.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 10:02 pm
  • oh jesus. we kinda need him.

    Sam-YF August 4, 2008, 10:02 pm
  • Since it’s 100 degrees out there, my guess is that it’s probably just a cramp. My guess is pseudo-informed, thanks to the magic of ESPN showing a ton of random game tonight.

    stuck working August 4, 2008, 10:18 pm
  • What a waste of back-to-back lead off singles. Couldn’t even squeeze in a run..

    Lar August 4, 2008, 10:20 pm
  • Yanks get first two on in the sixth and cant score.

    Sam-YF August 4, 2008, 10:20 pm
  • Tampa already lost. Yanks need this game to pick up a game..

    Lar August 4, 2008, 10:23 pm
  • Top of the order went 1-2-3. 6 more outs..

    Lar August 4, 2008, 10:34 pm
  • I’ve still been skeptical of Nady. Okay.
But he just tied the game. Go Yanks! Game tied at 5.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 10:49 pm
  • And the X-Man Cometh! Again! Nady ties it up off fire-throwing Francisco in the 8th with 2 outs. He has been a monster this past week. I love it.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 10:52 pm
  • Not sure we have Mo tonight with the back issues. Besides, it’s a tie game and all. Looks like Bruney gets to keep going…

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 10:54 pm
  • Or not.. =P Marte comes in to face the lefties.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 10:58 pm
  • In the Sox gamer they’re saying Joba went out with a sore shoulder. That’s not encouraging. I can’t fathom how much that would suck if this is more than a cramp.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 10:59 pm
  • And Marte gives a long triple with one out. That was kind of not clutch.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • Nice outfield play guys…one of you want to hold up for the carom next time. Not like keeping a guy on second with one out in a tie game is important or anything.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • They’re calling it a “stiff” shoulder for now. Ya…

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:00 pm
  • That was one of the worst swings I’ve seen in a while. A good sign I hope. Certainly better than triple.
    And he Ks…

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:01 pm
  • Marte strikes out Davis, giving the infielders some breathing room, and here’s Salty..

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • 20-letter-name man up.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • 2-2…

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:04 pm
  • Full count. Whose on deck?

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • Whew…nice job, in the end.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • And Marte got out of what he got in. Still tied game in a very hitter-friendly park, 9th inning, here we go!

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • Gotta get back in front of the tube!

    attackgerbil August 4, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • IH – Vazquez, but probably Bradley will pinch hit.. that guy is dangerous.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:06 pm
  • Let’s go Pudge – new guys are coming up big tonight…

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:09 pm
  • Forgot about Bradley – yeah, you’re right.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:09 pm
  • Working the full count. Melky chomping at the bit to get in this game but not sure he is that much faster than Pudge frankly. Still got to get on though…

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:10 pm
  • D*%n.
Sexy in. Every time he comes in he looks taller.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:12 pm
  • Sox and Rays lost.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:12 pm
  • Looked bad there. 2 down.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:13 pm
  • Here’s what’s gunna happen: Eddie “Mustache” Guardado is going to strike out the side, and then Mo is going to come in–during a tie-game–and blow it.
Sexson completes 1/5 of my prediction.

    Atheose August 4, 2008, 11:14 pm
  • Damon on second. Let’s go captain – dink one into right please.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:14 pm
  • Or Johnny Damon will double. That’s possible I guess.

    Atheose August 4, 2008, 11:15 pm
  • Mo may still be unavailable Ath.
    0-2 to Jeter.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:15 pm
  • Just a little late on that.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:16 pm
  • Jeter battling.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:17 pm
  • Why’s Mo unavailable? Just from frequent use?

    Atheose August 4, 2008, 11:18 pm
  • Great f*%king catch by Hammilton – his second of the night. He is fun to watch, except tonight (or any of the next 3 nights).

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:18 pm
  • Fear the Latin mustache!

    Atheose August 4, 2008, 11:19 pm
  • Tightness in his upper back last night, which is why he wasn’t warming in the bottom of the 8th when the Yanks took the lead (but before they blew it open). Likely/hopefully nothing serious, but yeah. I don’t know though – he may be available tonight. I haven’t heard. I don’t think Girardi will use him in a tie game away anyway given the tightness, but we’ll see.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • Marte gets another inning.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:20 pm
  • Anger management is up – 2-2.
    Melky in CF now…

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:21 pm
  • Full count. BB. Way to go after going 0-2 Damaso. Pudge’s arm likely to get tested. It hasn’t impressed so far with the Yanks.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:22 pm
  • Kinsler up – bunting. This guy is unreal fast.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:23 pm
  • 0-2. Bunt off now.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:24 pm
  • 1 down, 3-1 on Blair. Young on deck. Feeling queasy.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:28 pm
  • Great. 1 out, 2 on, Young up, Hamilton on deck. Very much teetering on the edge.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:29 pm
  • Popped him up.
Story of the year at the plate…

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:31 pm
  • 3-1. gulp

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:33 pm
  • Marte gets the high strike call. 3-2

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:33 pm
  • And Marte loses the game. Bah.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • And Marte gives up his 3rd walk. Girardi leaves him in to face the righty Byrd, who hits the GS.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:34 pm
  • Good night.
    Or night anyway.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:35 pm
  • With the Rays and Sox both losing, this was a great chance to pick up a game. Ah well.
The Twins are up 6-0 right now.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:35 pm
  • I guess Mo not available.

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:36 pm
  • The Yanks feel like a 3rd place team. 1 step forward 1.5 backward. Again and again.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • Hey, Rangers win!
Sorry for the schadenfreude, but after seeing the Sox lose in horrible fashion I had to get a smile on my face somehow.

    Atheose August 4, 2008, 11:37 pm
  • Yanks are 3-7 since winning 8 straight.

    IronHorse (yf) August 4, 2008, 11:51 pm
  • Isn’t there a Sox thread for that?

    Lar August 4, 2008, 11:57 pm
  • No playoffs…Joba is out now too. This season has been a f-ing nightmare. Nady is pretty sweet though…too bad ARod is worthless. How does he get all those numbers? I can’t recall him, aside from last year, getting ANY big hits EVER???? The guy is a fraud. I’m sorry but I’m getting sick of seeing him K with guys on base against some no-name pitcher! They hardly even pitch around him even…is anyone scared of this guy???
(sorry for the rant, I like ARod but he is really pissing me off right now. We need him to do some heavy lifting and he just doesn’t seem capable…)

    krueg August 5, 2008, 10:01 am
  • Some nice comments over on the sox thread from last night concerning Joba getting hurt.
I like the one accusing him of leaving injured as “cover for a bad outing”

    Sam-YF August 5, 2008, 10:16 am
  • Krueg,
I think your A-Rod views are not only understandable but probably largely shared and have inspired me to post something on A-Rod and clutch hitting – it’ll go up later today.
On Joba, he will likely miss his next start in Anaheim, but I haven’t heard anywhere that he is likely to miss mroe than that. And his description of the tightness yesterday (deltoid, not “in the shoulder”) does give some reason for optimism, but we’ll see.

    IronHorse (yf) August 5, 2008, 10:29 am
  • I don’t even go in those threads Sam…who cares what they think.

    krueg August 5, 2008, 10:29 am
  • That should be good IH…looking forward to all the bashing from SF’s in that thread.

    krueg August 5, 2008, 10:30 am
  • I just read thru the thread…it’s just Brad being Brad. He is a hater. Whatever.
I really never read their threads but man, are they a lot more worried about us then we are about them…weird. They’re the champs and have been ahead of us all season??? Weird.

    krueg August 5, 2008, 10:35 am
  • Calm down.
I was clearly joking about the “cover” thing, and in the end, I don’t really care if Joba is hurt or not unless it’s directly determining the order of pitchers that they run out against Boston. Joba not pitching = good news for other teams. He’s good, thus when out, it’s easier to win games. It should not be a surprise that I’m not upset about him missing any time whatsoever. I don’t want him hurt, obviously, so implying it is way off base. But, you know that.
I mean, I conceeded the fact that I should have probably not said something at all, so where’s the problem?
No need to drop the “classy” bomb when you’re reading into it much more than was meant to.

    Brad August 5, 2008, 10:40 am
  • Hater?

    Brad August 5, 2008, 10:41 am
  • Sweet –
A “classy” bomb, and a “they’re more worried about us” to top it off.
What next – the 26 ring reminder?
It shouldn’t be a surprise to any YF anywhere that SF do not wish unbridaled success to Joba Chamberlain, or wish him best in his recovery from whatever ails him. No more than any of you do for Beckett.

    Brad August 5, 2008, 10:44 am
  • “they’re more worried about us”
This is true. You can read through the gamers there is rarely a mention of the sox game in yanks threads and almost always a mention of the yanks in the sox threads….

    Sam-YF August 5, 2008, 10:47 am
  • “It shouldn’t be a surprise to any YF anywhere that SF do not wish unbridaled success to Joba Chamberlain, or wish him best in his recovery from whatever ails him. No more than any of you do for Beckett.”
Really? When Lester came back there was much support for YFs for him. I personally would never root for or take pleasure in the injury of any player. I want the yanks to win by being better not less bad…

    Sam-YF August 5, 2008, 10:49 am
  • Exactly Sam.

    krueg August 5, 2008, 10:53 am
  • Really, Sam?
Do you know any human being that is incapable of looking past a uniform when it comes to cancer and making another run at a baseball career?
    That’s a terrible comparsion, man.
Also, I never once said I took pleasure in his injury, I simply stated that I didn’t really care if he was in or out.
Oh well, this argument is silly. I’m sorry if I offended anyone by not caring if Joba is pitching or not.

    Brad August 5, 2008, 10:54 am
  • Not wanting Joba to pitch and taking pleasure in his injury are not the same thing, come on.
I never want to see his fat, smug, 100mph headhunting face because he’s good, but I never want to see a young promising pitcher get injured, no matter who he plays for.

    LocklandSF August 5, 2008, 11:04 am
  • Some nice comments over on the sox thread from last night concerning Joba getting hurt.
I like the one accusing him of leaving injured as “cover for a bad outing”

This is completely unfair. In the Sox game thread one commenter, Brad, said anything untoward towards Joba, and Atheose and I were the EXACT OPPOSITE in our attitude.
If people actually read through the thread you would see that the SFs policed the issue themselves and recognized Brad’s nonchalance (or worse, possible glee, but even that might be a misrepresentation of his apathy towards the injury) and called it out. Can we stop with this nonsense, painting either group of fans at this site as monolithic?
I am frustrated by this to no end, and these comments in particular are damaging and inaccurate.

    SF August 5, 2008, 11:28 am
  • Holy Crap.
I said I was out of line to even bring it up, apologized, and conceeded the fact that I should have said nothing at all. Not this morning, but in that thread shortly after I brushed it off as something I didn’t really care about.
    Calm down.

    Brad August 5, 2008, 11:35 am
  • 11:07 – Saying I don’t care is neither excited or demonstrative in any way shape or form.
It just means that I don’t care. One way or the other – healthy or broken – I don’t really give two cents about Joba Chamberlain.
11:09 – But I see your point. I should prob just keep it to myself as to not offend anyone by not caring.
Again, I realized I may have pused buttons, and said I’m sorry.

    Brad August 5, 2008, 11:40 am
  • But – in the future, there may be some things said in a Sox gamer that aren’t exactly what YF’s want to here.
I’m pretty sure that’s the reason they always put up two different gamers – so we’re not bickering back and forth re: what one fan may say about the opposing team.

    Brad August 5, 2008, 11:41 am
  • SF + Brad
My apologies as well. My comment was not well thought out. I woke up this morning still sour/pissed about the loss, Joba, and basically the end of the yankee season. I read the comment and posted. Cat of out of the bag. Ill try to refrain from reading sox gamers on crappy days for the yankees.
For the record. In the sox gamer, SF was particularly kind about Joba’s injury. I know well enough that we cant paint entire fanbases with the same brush. We are all individuals after all…
