Message on a T-Shirt

When Roger Clemens joined the Yankees last month, he gave T-shirts to his new teammates. On the front is Clemens’s Rocket Man logo, and on the back, in bold letters, is a personal slogan: Tough All Day.

(from today’s Times)

Ironically, the Yankees’ front office just printed up some "we signed a player for $28M and all he brought to the damn team were some lousy t-shirts" t-shirts.  In the Sox’ clubhouse Wily Mo Pena’s tees, with "I’m oK, you’re oK" emblazoned on the back, were not (pun intended) a big hit.

  • The way things are shaping up so far, Rah-jah is going to wind up costing Steinbrenner about $2-$3 million per win.

  • Y’know it really is something to see… when a selfish player of Roger Clemens caliber isn’t backed up by the overpaid crybaby team he was brought in to rescue. What made me laugh: At the time the deal was announced and Roger trumpeted his road to return to the Yanks from the luxury box, the Yankees were 5 games back. Immediately, the Yankees started to nosedive and dropped to 10 1/2 back and ultimately 14 1/2 back before the Rocket launched. To be fair, the Yanks have strung some impressive winning streaks together since Clemens return, they still are wildly inconsistent on the mound and at the plate. And while it is conceivable that the Yanks could still turn it around for him, and themselves, so far, at 5 and 8, Roger “The Rocket” Clemens is a pro-rated bust. Oh and topping out at 91 mph, he ain’t “the Rocket” anymore either.
I wonder if those Yanks fans who thought the Yankee brass swiped Johnny Damon from the Sox, STILL think he was such a steal?
Personally, from the start I thought Coco Crisp was a good pickup. He has lately started to show the player at the plate I thought he was going to be and WAS last spring in the 8 games he played for the Sox before he screwed up his finger stealing third. But what I can’t believe is the enormous impact in center he’s been. He’s worth a half run a game for his glove alone over Damon. And he is just now coming into his own for the Sox while Damon and his sissy throws have probably cost the Yankees several runs on short fly balls that bring in a run from third. I know he cost the Sox several runs a year.

  • oops, I was probably projecting to the future, Roger is not 5-8 although he may well be at some point. He IS 3-5, I knew it, just didn’t type it.
Looking at Johnny Damon vs Coco Crisp just a minute ago, some of the stats look like reverse images, like AVG for instance, Coco having raised his 60 points in the last month and a half. I’m starting to wonder if their careers are beginning to reverse image each other, with Damon’s beat up body failing on him as Crisp begins to look huge at the plate to go along with the dominance he’s showed in the field.
