Mixologist Moose: Rangers-Yanks Gamer I

Last week in Texas, Mike Mussina kept the tough Ranger lineup at bay through 7 innings (3 hits, 5 ks, 0 walks, 2 runs), leaving the game with a whopping 8-1 lead. Then the wheels came off. After 6 Texas runs in the 8th, it was all the Bombers could do to hold on for an 8-7 victory. That was the opener of a 3-game series swept by the Yanks. Tonight, Moose is again on the hill for the beginning of a series against the Rangers, but this time in New York. He goes against last year’s era champ Kevin Millwood, presently at an unthrilling 5.13 (he was bound to regress) with a 3-3 record. Moose is rolling at 6-1, 2.56. Hopefully he continues mixing pitches and speeds and befuddling the Rangers, and there’s no faltering when relief comes in behind him. Anyway, this is your thread for comment.

  • Holy crap. Gary Matthews with the play of the day!!!

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • And Giambi just misses the single. If not for the brilliant catch by GMJR, Yanks are up. Too bad.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:24 pm
  • Excuse me. Just misses the homer with the single.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:25 pm

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:27 pm

    NickYF May 15, 2006, 7:29 pm

  • I’m watching on YES.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:31 pm
  • Leadoff single for Cano. Getting solid contact off Millwood. Time to cash in with some runs.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:33 pm
  • Away board: Tejada homer puts O’s up 1-0 over the Sox in the first.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • How about that! Nice play by Teixiera, but Cano get’s to third anyway. Thought it was brilliant baserunning at first; turns out he cluelessly lucked into a smart play. We’ll take it!

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • Crosby rbi! Don’t get to write that too often. We’ll take. Good for him.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Away board: Wily Mo bombs one the other way, 2-1 Sox.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • Youk with a double. The Sox are totally ripping Lopez. If they can sustain this kind of contact they will score a bunch.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • Whoops, wrong thread.

    SF May 15, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • Moose cruisin’ in the third.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • GMJR singles to right past Cano. Hard hit but on the ground. Pitch on the outer half.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:48 pm
  • GMJR steals 2nd on Moose, despite the Cano tag to the head.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:49 pm
  • Grrrr. Where are you Moose? Great play by Giambi. Run saver.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:53 pm
  • And Cabrera makes the catch. Yikes. He doesn’t inspire confidence out there.

    YF May 15, 2006, 7:54 pm
  • Whew. Dodged a threat there.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 7:55 pm
  • Johnny right a GMJR for out one.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • Jeter with hopper to short. 2 quick outs.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 7:58 pm
  • Tek just singled home Ortiz to make it 3-1 Boston. C’mon, O’s.. little help.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:00 pm
  • Giambi Ks swinging on a good pitch by Millwood.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:00 pm
  • Nevin goes down on a check swing.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:04 pm
  • Try 6-1 Sox. Wily Mo with 4 Ribbies so far.

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:09 pm
  • Nice inning by Mussinda. Arod leading off in the bottom of the 4th.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:10 pm
  • Yeah, SF, I was deciding whether or not to post more bad news. :)

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • Who the hell is Mussinda?

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • Arod with a stand-up double to left center to lead off the inning.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:14 pm
  • Cano!

    YF May 15, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • Cano hits a line drive single to center to score ARod.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • I like him hitting 5th. At least tonight.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • Brad Wilkerson with a homer to left. NYY 2, TEX 1.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • DeRosa singles to left. Barajas up, no outs.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:24 pm
  • Johnny tries to make a running grab but it short hops. He keeps it front of him, runners on first and second.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • No outs, Yankees playing bunt.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • GMJR hits a shot to Arod, to Cano for one. GMJR is safe on first on the FC. Barajas took Cano out on the slide.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • Crosby makes a great leaping catch at the track to save an extra base hit. Run scores on the tag. Tie game.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:32 pm
  • Teixeira goes down swinging on a crazy off speed pitch from Mussina.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:35 pm
  • Away board: Mikemikemike Lowelllowelllowell triples 2 runs in to make it 8-1 Sox.
    No doubles for you!!

    SF May 15, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • Yanks down in order on 7 pitches. We need a quick top 6th.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • AC is broke at the bar, and I am sitting next to one of the loudest Sox fans I have heard recently. He loved that Lowell triple. Gave it a standing ovation, which is kind of weird.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:42 pm
  • Mussina the Rangers down quickly. Thanks, Moose. Now let’s get some runs.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:47 pm
  • Easy 6th for Moose. Still no walks, Let’s go offense! (Sure ain’t the same w/out Sheff and Matsui).

    YF May 15, 2006, 8:48 pm
  • Jim Leyritz sighting in the stands. ARod is behind 0-2. lifts it to right for the second out.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:52 pm
  • Since Matsui and Sheffield out, according to my calculations: 41 innings, 12 runs for the Yankees. CASHMAN!

    YF May 15, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • Cano not looking very good in that AB.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • And it seems that patience has gone out the window. Millwood’s on pace to throw 9 innings comfortably.

    NickYF May 15, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • Mussina still hanging in there at 93 pitches heading into the at bat. Very close 1-2 pitch doesn’t get the call. 2-2 might have been a bit low, still looked mighty good. Full count gets fouled off. Payoff pitch is outside for the walk.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 8:58 pm
  • A walk from Moose on pitch 100. Let’s not let him stay out there too long, fellas.

    YF May 15, 2006, 8:59 pm
  • Yeah, Millwood is only at 68 pitches, which is quite amazing. Seems like every batter is trying to make it happen with the first swing. Nice double play, 643.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:00 pm
  • DP! Sweet. You give Moose Barajas now, hope he closes the inning, and that’s it.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:00 pm
  • Seems like the plate has tightened up as Moose can’t get a call. Two-hands makes the catch in left to end the inning.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:01 pm
  • Now let’s get a run here Yanks, give Moose the chance for the win, and Joe no excuse to send him back out there in the 8th.
Meanwhile, I can only imagine Cliff Corcoran over on Bronx Banter is stewing at the prospect of seeing Proctor come on in a tie, rather than Mo. Not gonna happen!

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:03 pm
  • Farnsworth sighting.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • Farns getting up!

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • Posada gets ahead early, then the count goes full. Takes a nasty looking pitch for the first out.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:08 pm
  • Heckuva pitch to freeze Jorge for the k.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:08 pm
  • Bernie quickly lines out to left for the second out.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:09 pm
  • Crosby pops out to Millwood for another quick inning. Gah.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:10 pm
  • And Bernie flare’s out. And Crosby out, too, to end the inning. No win for Moose on a great outing, unless he comes back out, which is, one hopes, not gonna happen.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:11 pm
  • Okay. On comes the Farns. And Giambi replaced by Phillips. Unless Giambi is hurting, this is no time for defensive replacement.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:13 pm
  • Farns is in, and GMJR lines a ball up third base for a double.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:13 pm
  • My pituitary hurts. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

    Jason May 15, 2006, 9:14 pm
  • And Cabrera plays a single into a double. Grr.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:15 pm
  • Farns on the comebacker loses the handle at first but recovers nicely and is patient with the throw to get the out. GMJR stays on 2nd.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:15 pm
  • And the Farns dirtball puts GMJR on 3rd. Grrrrr.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:16 pm
  • Crap. Awful pitch on 0-2. What is Farns doing?

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • Starting to dump now. Hope we hold them here in case they have to call it.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • No idea. Looks bad.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • Kyle booking himself for a tour of the Torre Doghouse.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:20 pm
  • Short break to rake the mound. There very well might be a delay.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:20 pm
  • Coming down in giant buckets right now on the UWS. Sheesh.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • Single to right scores Teixeira, but a base running error gets the second out. Feck.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • Ugh.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • Single to left rather.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • Sloppy, i think is the right word.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • Bucky. Looking good, dude.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • Looking at the NY metro radar right now. It isn’t going to end any time soon.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:29 pm
  • That was ridiculous. Shoulda had that tarp on 15 minutes ago.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:30 pm
  • Yes, I’m really disappointed that they didn’t delay earlier. I think the mound was so slippery that Farnsworth couldn’t push off, and he got shelled for it.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • On comes Cordero. Let’s see what the offense can generate after a little time out.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:50 pm
  • Melky 2 hands down 4-3.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:51 pm
  • Game on. One away quickly.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • Johnny, we need you now.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • And Damon grounds out 3 unassisted.
    Let’s Go D!

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • Jeets right up the middle. Let’s go AP!

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Jeter doesn’t have a decent line against Cordero. Takes two pitches for balls. lines the 2-0 to center almost decapitating Cordero.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Phillips’ career with NY may hinge on this AB.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • AP not getting the job done.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • Tipped strike three.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • We gonna see the Proctologist here?

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:58 pm
  • Yep. Good move.

    YF May 15, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • Proctor with the decent fielding play on the bunt. one away.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • Procto walkin’ awkward. Uh-oh.

    YF May 15, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • Looped double to right by DeRosa.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • Jeter gets an error on the throw. 11 errors in the last 8 games.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • And now the wheels come off. Bad throw by Jeets but that’s friggin’ catchable. AP turned his head!

    YF May 15, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • Phillips should have had that scoop though.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • PHEW! And a nice play by AP.

    YF May 15, 2006, 10:04 pm
  • And Procto gets out of it. Let’s get 2!

    YF May 15, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • Need something from ARod to get us going.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:09 pm
  • A-Rod grounds out.

    YF May 15, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • Weak groundout to short by ARod. Cano steps in.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • Great stab by Young to rob Cano of a single.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:12 pm
  • Ballgame on a pop-out to right. Not impressive.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:13 pm
  • Good night. See you all tomorrow.

    attackgerbil May 15, 2006, 10:13 pm
  • Yanks: 12 runs in 5 games since the Matsui injury, and now Giambi may be hurt. The ship be sinking?

    YF May 15, 2006, 10:21 pm
  • These Texans seem to like playing in the rain… first Boston, then New York.

    Hudson May 15, 2006, 11:15 pm
