The last couple of days, I’ve been preparing for my upcoming vacation to the Grand Canyon, so here’s a collection of things I thought while watching portions of one game and catching highlights of the other:
- Kyle Snyder has joined Vaughn Eshelman in that hallowed club of scrap-heap players who come out and (briefly) do amazing things. 3 ER in 5 IP isn’t particularly special, but striking out Alfonso Soriano three times and getting a win when you came into the clubhouse with a KC Royals bag over your shoulder, four arm sugeries and a 22.50 ERA sure is. Congrats, kid!
- Another reason to love Jermaine Van Buren — his attitude after being informed that he was being sent down yet again, despite apparently righting his ship with a scoreless inning Monday: "He was upbeat as he packed his bags and said the trip to Pawtucket was ‘no big deal.’ In response to Francona’s comparison to Youkilis in the past, Van Buren said, ‘Look at Youkilis now.’" Good young pitcher. Great attitude. What’s not to love?
- As has been mentioned, a big boost from Papa Jack for Alex Gonzalez: .343 BA, just 9 K in 67 AB since taking two days off May 23-24 to work with Ron Jackson. In that span (plus the two games), Alex Cora is hitting .340 with a .415 OBP and just 3 K in 47 AB. What Bathroom Break?
- Sure, Billy Wagner and Mariano Rivera have Metallica. But can they drive their own Hummer to the mound? I think not.
