No More Screwing Around: Yanks-Jays, Orioles-Sox Gamers

The Yankees need a good game out of Phil Hughes today, and a good start from Zach Stewart would be much appreciated as the Yankees face Henderson Alvarez at Rogers Centre, while Joe Saunders and the Orioles host the Sox at Camden. The Halos play Texas later today and Tampa visits Seattle tonight. The cuticles are getting a workout for sure.

  • What I’ve missed from being in the cellar and therefore ignoring the standings is that with four games left, no AL team has clinched a playoff spot. Amazing.

  • With the Yanks down 2-1 and Baltimore up by three early, that wild card slot may be the only harbor, and that’s a shitty way to get in, assuming they do get in. Teixeira supposedly back tomorrow. Will it matter?

  • Brett Lawrie makes it 4-1 with a shot to left center.

    Oh well.

  • Five-to-one, Hughes is done. And it’s 5-1 Orioles in Baltimore. C’mon, Sox, rally! We can’t do this all on our own, obviously.

  • Eduardo Nunez! Long sac fly gives the Yankees a 6-5 lead.

    Eduardo Nunez!

    I like saying that.

  • The Captain extends the rally with a single to right, Yanks 7-5.

  • Ichiro pushes one out towards the track but Gose runs it down. Well hit.

  • Inning over, protect this lead.

  • I did NOT expect that roaring comeback the way they’ve played lately. Can’t be happy about what we’ve seen from Hughes (not to mention Nova) lately, but whatever – the Yankees limp back to the Bronx tied for the division lead. If they can’t out-pace the Orioles in these last three games when they face the last-place Sox at home while the O’s play the pitching-heavy playoff-contending Rays on the road, they deserve to miss the playoffs in an ugly one-game playoff vs. Oakland or LAA.

And LAA still scares me the most.

If LAA completes the double-header sweep of Texas tonight, then the O’s, Rangers, and Yankees will all be tied for the best record in the AL and STILL no AL team will have clinched a playoff spot with just 3 games left, while 4 NL teams will have clinched their playoff spots.

And if you add an Oakland win to the scenario tonight then they will be just one game behind the Rangers for the division lead heading into a three-game series vs. Texas to end the season.

Fantastic last week of baseball, as much as I wish the Yankees were above it all by now…

  • Hello relevant final series…one last shot to keep things interesting.

  • Angels put 4 on the board in the top of the 1st but the Rangers have battled back to make it 4-3 in the 2nd. This is going to be a fun one to watch. Sort of rooting for the Angels just to keep things as interesting as possible for these last 3 days of baseball. Not sure if I’m more impressed by the A’s or the O’s this year. Cespedes is a beast.

  • By the way, the fact that the O’s got to face Cook, Dubront, and Stewart on their way to sweeping Boston and we get Buccholz, Lester, and Matsuzaka pisses me off.

  • Oh, and if Jeter gets 6 hits in this final series he’ll tie his single-season career high of 219 hits set in 1999, when he batted .349…

  • We’re in. No small thing. All but certain that Detroit and Oakland will join Texas, Baltimore, and NY in the post-season, though who goes where when is almost certain to come down to Wednesday night’s games. And possibly even Thursday if NY and Baltimore need a playoff to decide the ALEast. Curious to see if Girardi starts Nova or Phelps on Tuesday. I’m headed to Wednesday’s game, which I originally thought 6 months ago might be a Mariano regular-season-swansong, but now looks to be possibly very consequential. Please CC, be CC tomorrow…
