Of Dice and (First Base)men: Sox-Rockies Gamer III

Denver and Boston are two of the only multiple-newspaper cities left in America. As such, there’s really no excuse for any of us not to know the themes going into tonight’s ballgame.

But we’re all about the information at YFSF, so in case you’ve missed it, let’s recap:

  • The Rocky Mountains are really tall.
  • Humidor.
  • Kevin Youkilis.
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka + thin air = ?
  • "Back against the wall," "in a hole," "must-win situation."

You are now prepared to watch tonight’s game and discuss it authoritatively.

Consider this a dual pregame and in-game thread for your comments. Away with them!

  • Very nice. Now where were you when I was in college and needed a concise and thorough summary of the Pentagon Papers situation?
    Go Sox!

  • If any of you are fans of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, or laughing your ass off, check this out. It’s Carls myspace page with an audio diatribe on the state of the yankees. If you are as big of fan of Carl as i am, check out his goodbye to Torre video here. Very few things have ever made me laugh so hard.

  • Oh my god, is this the worst ever World Series preview?

    AndrewYF October 27, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • Fox winning hearts and minds again.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • Rockies being introduced to disco music.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • Why does he sound like he’s doing introductions for the WWE?

    pastorsteve October 27, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • “Oh my god, is this the worst ever World Series preview?”
You didn’t need someone to tell you that the Rockies would really like to win this game?

    NJsf October 27, 2007, 8:27 pm
  • Ugh, more rally towels. Did you idiots learn nothing from Cleveland? RALLY TOWELS = PLAYOFF DEATH.
At least, that SHOULD be the rule.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 8:28 pm
  • The Fox music they are playing everytime they come back from a commercial is horrible. Sounds like funeral music or some type of woe is me theme.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Interesting that Ellsbury is leading off tonight.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Holy geez that outfield is huge. Also: that graphic was actually a little bit useful! The apocalypse is nigh.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 8:36 pm
  • McCraver:
“String them together like a fisherman does fish.”
Funny, most of the time when I fish I try to string beers together.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:36 pm
  • Ellsbury with a single halfway up the third base line.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • Pedroia fouls off a pitch as Ellsbury breaks for 2nd.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Pedroia with a single to short. Elssbury safe at 2nd.
    Papi up.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • Papi goes right after the 1st pitch.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • Ortiz strikes out on a pitch tailing away.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:43 pm
  • Where is everyone??
Got to see that slow CO infield grass on Jacoby’s not-quite-a-bunt.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 8:45 pm
  • Fogg worked Papi away and now appears to being doing the same with Manny.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:45 pm
  • Do they now wave hankies everywhere but Fenway and Yankee Stadium??? How irritating.

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • This looks like a potential squander, but Fogg has basically had bad luck, the Sox haven’t really done anything to him despite the threat.

    SF October 27, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • Manny flies out to left.
Runners still at 1st and 2nd.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • It appears the strikezone is going to be a little expanded tonight. Let’s hope Dice-K gets the same one.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • Lowell flies out to center, both runners stranded. The only positive to look at is that Fogg threw 27 pitches.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Nice work from Fogg to get out of that. Wide strike zone today.

    YF October 27, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Matsui doubles on the 1st pitch.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Should have been a single, JD blacked out in right field due to thin oxygen in the air.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Ugh.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Tulowitzki strikes out.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • Holliday grounds back to Dice who turns quickly to start the run down to get Matsui.
    2 down.
Very nice play there by Dice.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • it kinda feels like the crowd is on a teleprompter.

    sf rod October 27, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Helton grounds to Lowell, throws to 2nd. Inning over.
    Dice with 15 pitches.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • sf rod, they do seem confused when to cheer or boo.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • re: teleprompter – if they have rally towels, they almost certainly have an LCD screen somewhere that says “MAKE SOME NOISE!!1!!” *flash flash* “GET ON YOUR FEET!!!!!” etc.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Drew grounds the first pitch to 2nd.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • they got all randy on 2-0 strike down the middle to manny. he had no intentention of swinging. it was a big moment for them….i guess.

    sf rod October 27, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Low strike zone there to Tek.
Tek hits one back up the middle shattering his bat, Fogg having to dance out of the way of the bat.
Tek thrown out at 1st by Tulowitzki.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • thanks for breaking down how the NL works tim mccarver.

    sf rod October 27, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Lugo with a two out double to the gap in right center.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Lugo doing something useful!

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Matsuzaka looks at the bat in his hand like “what the hell is this?”

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • Anyone know if they use a DH in Japan?

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • Atkins hit by Dice K.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • RBF, supposedly one of the leagues in Japan does use one.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • rbf- they use both. two leauges there two. most other countries use the DH as a standard.

    sf rod October 27, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Hawpe strikes out. Three straight fastballs.

    Anonymous October 27, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • Torrealba flies out to left.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • Sullivan grounds to short, Lugo throws to 2nd to end the inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • So it’s official – I definitely am going to have a heart attack any time a ball goes to left for the next 2 (or 3) games.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Ellsbury with a shot past Atkins, and slides into 2nd just beating the throw for a leadoff double.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • poor coco

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • Just drink Jackie. It will make things easier for you later in the game.
Pedroia with a nice bunt that he beats the throw on. Helton had to jump to catch the ball.
    Ellsbury on 3rd.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • “Let’s go Red Sox” chant… man, Rockies, that’s just embarassing.
    ORTIZ!!!

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Ortiz doubles, Ellsbury scores, Pedroia to 3rd.
    1-0
    Poor Coco?

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • i’ve been following a rockies blog. needless to say…they hate all things sox. i don’t post there but other sox fans are starting to needle in their gamers.

    sf rod October 27, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • You’re probably right, Rob (re: the drinking)…

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Intentional pass to Manny.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Aw. That’s just poor form… no wonder they hate Sox fans.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • Given Jacpby’s performance, I think Coco is going elsewhere…

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • Rod, I read Lohud, but don’t post. I get irritated seeing Sox fans act like asses on other teams blogs.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • Lowell back up the middle. Pedroia and Papi score. Manny held at 2nd.
    3-0

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • 3-0. Josh Fogg. Heh.

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • still no outs

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • I think so RBF, but I think before everyone thinks we have the second coming of sliced bread, Ellsbury is still a rookie and could still start in the minors next year.
I think he will be on the big team, but anything could happen.
    Drew pops out.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • The Sox have 3 doubles. Seems like the Rockies outfielders are having trouble covering that large outfield.

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • Manny was clearly safe.

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Tek singles to left, Manny thrown out at home.
Manny appears safe. Blown call by the home plate umpire.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • That’s a bad call. Oh well, doesn’t matter to me if we win 8-0 or 7-0. :P

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Manny needs to quit that helmet shit rounding third.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • So according to Fox, Manny was out because of his dreadlocks.

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • I think Manny was out. The glove looked like it hit his hip before Manny got his hand on the plate.

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • That was the shit.

    Devine October 27, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • DICE K WITH A TWO RUN SINGLE!!!!

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • 5-0. It’s time to say it. The Rockies suck.

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • DICE-K!!!

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • I don’t know why Manny even has the helmet on in the first place.
Also, 2 RBI for Matsuzaka!!! LOL!

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • dice-K!!!

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • Matsuzaka, that is.

    Devine October 27, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • YES YES YES!!!!
    What a hit!!!!

    SF October 27, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • Suprised Clayton didn’t mention his tacos.

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • The Manny out wasn’t a bad call – the ump was either right or wrong, based on the replay, so it’s just bad luck. Impossible to tell what happened, it sure looked plausible that Torrealba nicked Manny’s thigh. Cannot complain, it was a near-impossible call, and he might even have gotten it right, and he made the call quickly. That was good umpiring, in my book.

    SF October 27, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • I almost hate to see Dice-K running around the bases at this altitude. Will he be able to pitch now?

    rootbeerfloat October 27, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • What kind of polar bear jacket was Royce Clayton wearing?

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • I also have no internet where my TV is tonight, so I may not be commenting too often, unfortunately.

    SF October 27, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Ellsbury with an RBI. Just under Sullivan’s glove.
Two doubles in the same inning. Pedroia coming up and Jason “Dragon Slayer” Fogg just got ate.
Bullpen in use already for Colorado.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:38 pm
  • NL = JV

    mp (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Jesus, that’s 10 Red Sox hits in 2 2/3 innings.

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Yeah, SF, I didn’t see the tag on the thigh, but Manny definitely did tag the plate… hard call to make.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:41 pm
  • Jackie said when Manny was called out:
“Oh well, doesn’t matter to me if we win 8-0 or 7-0. :P”
    Nice call!

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • “Oh well, doesn’t matter to me if we win 8-0 or 7-0. :P”
    Nice call!

OK, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Seven at-bats left for the Rox IN Colorado. No jinxes, please?!
    Use discipline.

    SF October 27, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • Man, those of us looking for a tight series are being let down…

    dknyc October 27, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • Thanks! Still early though. Could be 11-0 instead… ;)

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • I wonder why Hurdle put in Morales (his long guy) rather than a short reliever to replace Fogg. That would have allowed the Rox to use a pinch-hitter to lead off the 3rd.

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 9:47 pm
  • Nice time for Dice to knock his first runs in this season.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Seven innings, you mean?
Not being jinxy (at least not on purpose) just a little silly. I know full well that the Rockies can come right back with a few off of Matsuzaka.
Still, it’s getting harder to be pessimistic about this series.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Wow, just checking in… DiceK with two RBI? Youkilis who?

    Hudson October 27, 2007, 9:50 pm
  • Matsui strikes out.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:51 pm
  • Dice is looking pretty good so far.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Sorry SF, but this team is just not competetive with the Red Sox the way they are playing. They are starting to remind me of St. Louis in ’04. I’m not saying sweep necessarily, but the Rockies are NOT going to win the World Series. And don’t bring up the Sox comeback against the Yankees. That was once in a lifetime, and these Rockies are not the ’04 Red Sox.

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • A quote from the ESPN in game blog:
Alex (Burlington, VT): Matsuzaka has as many RBIs as the entire Rockies lineup right now. Wow.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Still, it’s getting harder to be pessimistic about this series.
Oh, I am not pessimistic. Just trying to not tempt the fates. No matter the exorcism of “old fatalistic Sox fan” that happened in 2004, this is just being a sports fan. No team is immune. Comment wisely.
That is all. I have to leave my internet connection. Keep it up Dice, and GO SOX!!!

    SF October 27, 2007, 9:56 pm
  • (TOM – STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!)

    SF October 27, 2007, 9:56 pm
  • Ok.
    More runs!!!

    Tom sf October 27, 2007, 9:58 pm
  • I agree with SF… no sense in playing with bad voodoo and jinxing the team.
In game observations are cool. Forecasting or comparisions to things that have passd is possibly playing with fire.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • Ortiz snatches up the grounder like a biscuit and takes it himself to 1st.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • how is papi’s defense so far?

    mike October 27, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • Looking pretty good Mike. Just handled a hard grounder and took it to 1st.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:09 pm
  • That’s quite the outfit on Youkilis.

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • Helton now with an 11 pitch AB.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • Helton goes down on a 3-2 breaking pitch looking.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • That was a beautiful strike three pitch.

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • Atkins walks. Hawpe coming up.

    Anonymous October 27, 2007, 10:16 pm
  • Hawpe pops up, Lugo with the catch. Inning over.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:17 pm
  • Drew with a leadoff double to left-center that hits off the wall.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:21 pm
  • Everyone in the lineup now has a hit or walked.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:22 pm
  • The Rockies suck it.

    YF October 27, 2007, 10:25 pm
  • Tek strikes out.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:26 pm
  • Lugo battling Morales here.
    Affeldt warming up.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:30 pm
  • Lugo flies out to right. Drew holds at 2nd.
    Matsuzaka up.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:30 pm
  • Dice is taking some cuts while batting.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:32 pm
  • Dice grounds to 2nd to end the inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:33 pm
  • Torrealba with a leadoff single up the middle.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:37 pm
  • Sullivan flies out to left.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:39 pm
  • Smith with a bloop to right field. Runners at 1st and 2nd.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:40 pm
  • This is the first real test of Dice tonight.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:41 pm
  • A little grumpy that Drew didn’t get to that bloopy fly ball.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 10:42 pm
  • Matsui grounds to short, Lugo fields the ball off balance and throws immediately to 3rd to cut the lead runner down.
    2 outs.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • Good defense by Lugo and Lowell, forcing out the lead runner.

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • Drew looked like he played the ball the safe way Jackie.
He may have had a chance if he dove. But no sense doing that with a six run lead.
Tulowitzki pops out to short to end the inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:44 pm
  • We’re through five innings and Dice-K’s pitch count is under 90!! Hooray!

    academic-SF October 27, 2007, 10:45 pm
  • Dice looking the best he has in quite in awhile.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:45 pm
  • Ellsbury grounds to 3rd. Thrown out at 1st.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:49 pm
  • Speier up in the Colorado pen.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:50 pm
  • Pedroia with a busted bat fly out to center.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:52 pm
  • Ortiz strikes out to end the inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:53 pm
  • I’m all for enthusiasm, but I swear the Rockies crowd thinks they’re the ones up by 6.
Let’s get one more scoreless inning, Daisuke.

    Devine October 27, 2007, 10:55 pm
  • Youk now at 1st base.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:57 pm
  • Timlin and Lopez up in the Sox pen.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:58 pm
  • Holliday grounds out to 3rd to start the inning off.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 10:59 pm
  • Helton walks after an 8 pitch AB.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:03 pm
  • Atkins up, a DP would be nice here to end the inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:04 pm
  • 3-0 now to Atkins.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:05 pm
  • 3-0 now to Atkins.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:05 pm
  • Sorry for the double post. Atkins walks, Dice with back-to-back walks.
Tito to the mound to get Dice, Lopez coming in to face Hawpe.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:06 pm
  • Hawpe with a shot to left center, Helton scores.
    6-1.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:09 pm
  • Why does Tito persist in using Lopez as a LOOGY?

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:09 pm
  • Well, I guess he’s not really a LOOGY if he’s in to face Torrealba. Still.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:10 pm
  • Why did Tito bring Lopez in to face a lefty? Lopez has not done well against lefties this season. Just seems like an odd choice. I would have used Timlin.
    Okajima warming up.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:10 pm
  • Torrealba with a grounder to left on a 2-2 pitch.
    6-2
Runners on 1st and 2nd. Still one out.
Time for Timlin to come in.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:12 pm
  • Francona should have kept Matsuzaka in. Or least bring in Timlin instead of Lopez.

    SoxFan October 27, 2007, 11:12 pm
  • On that, here comes Timlin to face Spilborgh.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • I would have pulled Dice, but gone to Timlin instead of Lopez.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • Yeah, I think pulling Daisuke was the right move. Lopez just wasn’t effective.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • Ugh, what was he brining in Lopez against a lefty for? Everyone knows he stinks against lefties.
Tito’s first bad move of the series.

    SF October 27, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • Spilborghs with a deep fly to center that Ellsbury catches at the wall.
    2 down….runners hold.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:17 pm
  • Lopez’s career splits are actually normal for a lefty, it’s just this year that’s an anomaly.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:18 pm
  • I guess they’re just expecting him to regress to the mean with his splits. (sorry, hit post too soon)

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:19 pm
  • I guess with a six run lead they figured they could take a chance with Lopez… it didn’t pay off, but I don’t think it was a horrible move.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:20 pm
  • LUGO!
I have nothing coherent to add to that.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:20 pm
  • This inning that low and away pitch is not getting called a strike like it was for the Colorado pitchers.
Lugo with a hell of a jump and snag of Bakers liner to end the inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:20 pm
  • Whew.

    SF October 27, 2007, 11:21 pm
  • If Lopez handles his role that inning it saves Timlin for next inning and sets the bullpen up for the rest of the game. So the risk was worth it with a 6 run lead. Just did not play out that way and it would appear that either Oki or Paps is going to be forced to go more than one inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:22 pm
  • “Whew”
That inning seemed to be more stressful than anything we saw in game 2. Probably the most trying inning we have had so far.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:24 pm
  • That play HAD TO have sucked all the enthusiasm out of Coors.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:24 pm
  • Rob, you don’t think Timlin will pitch the bottom of the 7th?
I’d agree that was the most interesting this series has been so far.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:25 pm
  • Not sure Jackie. Timlin has not been strecthed out to many times since coming back from the arm problems. Perhaps he could go an out in the 7th and then turn over to Oki.
    Manny down swinging.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:26 pm
  • The Sox have had 1 hit since the third inning.
    Lowell strikes out.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:27 pm
  • Drew goes down swinging. Hergess K’s the side.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:30 pm
  • Their bullpen has been pretty good in the last few games; I’m impressed.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:31 pm
  • Phillip Bailey from Earth, Wind and Fire? I honestly did not think anyone was left from that band.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:32 pm
  • Appears Timlin is headed back out. Only threw 9 piches last inning.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:34 pm
  • Matsui with a bunt single to leadoff the 7th for the Rockies.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:36 pm
  • Matsui steals, Tek just a hair slow on the throw.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:37 pm
  • Tulowitzki grounds one up the middle, Matsui to third.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:39 pm
  • Double switch….
Okajima is coming in. I am assuming that Coco is headed to the outfield.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:40 pm
  • Coco now in CF, Jacoby slips to LF.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:42 pm
  • Apparently that was the wrong move. :/

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:42 pm
  • My bad, Ellsbury is now in RF. Manny still in LF.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:43 pm
  • wow, not cool.

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:43 pm
  • Delcarmen up in the pen.
Holliday with a shot to dead-center field. No question when it left his bat.
    6-5

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:43 pm
  • Holliday jumped on the 1st pitch.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:44 pm
  • Wow, the Red Sox bullpen has really melted down.

    SoxFan October 27, 2007, 11:44 pm
  • Sigh. Well, it’s more interesting now…

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:46 pm
  • Helton with a single to left.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:48 pm
  • A LOT more interesting…

    Jackie (SF) October 27, 2007, 11:48 pm
  • I am very surprised that the red hot Drew was pulled to move Coco into center. What was the purpose of this. Defense? Drew is more than sufficient defensively.

    Birdmanofvt October 27, 2007, 11:51 pm
  • Atkins strikes out on a change up.
    Finally we record an out.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:52 pm
  • I say move, but I meant “PUT”.

    Birdmanofvt October 27, 2007, 11:52 pm
  • Hawpe up.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:52 pm
  • Bird…the thought probably is that Coco can cover more ground in the outfield than Drew.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:53 pm
  • I see Okie as this fragile piece of machinery that can only be used sparingly. I feel uneasy relying on him right now.

    Birdmanofvt October 27, 2007, 11:54 pm
  • Hawpe strikes out.
    2 down.

    Rob SF October 27, 2007, 11:57 pm
  • “Bird…the thought probably is that Coco can cover more ground in the outfield than Drew.”
Yeah, but that subtle difference in coverage isn’t worth the loss of JD’s bat. Granted that Tito didn’t foresee this becoming a 1 run game.

    Birdmanofvt October 27, 2007, 11:59 pm
  • I definately see the logic in that. That is the risk we have everytime in the playoffs when we pull someone for defense. It is like playing the prevent defense in football.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:01 am
  • Oki gets out of the inning on a grounder back to the mound.
Lost in this inning is the three run jack he gave up. I might have argued prior to this inning (and maybe still) that Oki has been the key player for us so far in the series to have gotten us out of some tight jams. Perhaps he has an argument for MVP IF we win the series.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:02 am
  • We need some runs this inning.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:04 am
  • At least the Rockies’ fire works technicians got some job satisfaction.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:04 am
  • Tek with a broken back grounder to short that Tulowitzski fields and throws him out on.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:06 am
  • Just got in from work. Last I chekced it was 6-2, bot 7. Now I get home and its all out of control?
    What the hell?

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:06 am
  • Delcarmen still warming up.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:07 am
  • A 3 run jack last inning Dio

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:07 am
  • Lets see what Coco does.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:07 am
  • Thank you COCO!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:09 am
  • Crisp with a little blooper just under the glove of Tulowitzski.
    Runnser on 1st and 2nd.
    Go-go Bunny up.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:10 am
  • “they helped to brign you baseball on FOX”
They should be punished then. Maybe using Enhanced Interrogation techniques?
    ELLSBURY!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:11 am
  • Who was it the other day that said Ellsbury had looked terrible so far?
    JACOBY YOU DA MAN!!!

    Jackie (SF) October 28, 2007, 12:11 am
  • Youk is excited

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:12 am
  • Ellsbury with a fly ball to right that the ball hits off his glove scoring Lugo. Coco at 3rd, Ellsbury with his 3rd double of the night.
    2 run lead again.
    7-5

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:12 am
  • Tacoby Bellsbury with another hit!

    SoxFan October 28, 2007, 12:12 am
  • Good for Coco. Ellsbury is a lot of fun to watch. It will be interesting what they do next year.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:12 am
  • DUSTIN!!! HELL YEAH!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:12 am
  • Pedroia with a shot to right, 2 more runs score.
    DIE YOU ROACHES!!

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:13 am
  • I LOVE THIS TEAM.

    Jackie (SF) October 28, 2007, 12:13 am
  • Can we award the WS (if we win) MVP to the Farm System as a whole?

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:14 am
  • Perhaps we can Dio

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:16 am
  • Youk grounds to 3rd.
    Manny time.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:16 am
  • Younk grounds to third Pedroia cant go anywhere. Come ON MAN RAM!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:16 am
  • Manny pops up. Inning over, but we get 3. *deep breath*

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:19 am
  • Manny flies out to left to end the inning.
Delcarmen to start the inning? If so I would think that he is on a short hook with Pap’s waiting in the wings.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:20 am
  • I think so, Rob. You dont want to start with Paps and make him unavailable tommorrow.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:22 am
  • Lil’ Manny no look so good…

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:23 am
  • Delcarmen worries me here. This may be the toughest inning he has been in.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:23 am
  • Spilborghs flies out to right field.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:24 am
  • Nice run Ells!
    wait.. ELLS?
    Jacoby’s in RIGHT?

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:24 am
  • Yes Dio, double switch when Oki came in.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:25 am
  • Christ, Delcarmen.. hit the zone.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:25 am
  • Lined to Pedroia. 2 down.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:26 am
  • Tavares with a liner stright at Pedroia.
    2 outs.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:26 am
  • This inning has Vomit written allllll over it.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:27 am
  • DAMMIT!
    Paps now?

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:28 am
  • Matsui with a grounder up the middle.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:28 am
  • Paps up…oh my..

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:28 am
  • ANOTHER first pitch ball…. jimminy crickets…

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:29 am
  • Come on MDC!!

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:29 am
  • Manny D. cannot hit that zone..geez

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:29 am
  • 2-0. Manny has no sense of the zone AT ALL

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:29 am
  • 2-1 on whaty appeared to be to be a generous strike

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:30 am
  • 3-1 now. PAPS PAPS PAPS

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:30 am
  • Wow…nothing even close…he needs to leave now

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:31 am
  • Walked ‘im. NOW PAPS?

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:31 am
  • Jesus…walks Tulowitzski.
    Go get Paps…

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:31 am
  • Yep. Paps time.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:31 am
  • Well, heck of a game so far. I am no longer with a TV, so here I am on GameCast. *sigh*
Good thing the Sox got those runs back in the eighth. Looks like they might need them.

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:33 am
  • Why are they STILL showing this Roger that commercial?

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:34 am
  • Whoa.. weird keyboard glitch there

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:35 am
  • Here we go…..
Fly ball to left field. Holliday out.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:36 am
  • Thank you PAPS!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:36 am
  • Man, my stomach dropped on that swing..

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:36 am
  • One pitch, one out. Because Papelbon is the man.
I’ll repeat what I’ve said several times: Fans who need props to cheer don’t deserve success.

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:37 am
  • I thought he hit it out for a second.

    SoxFan October 28, 2007, 12:37 am
  • One pitch.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:37 am
  • “As a final step before posting your comment, enter the letters and numbers you see in the image below.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:38 am
  • You and me both, Soxfan

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:38 am
  • So did I SoxFan. Then I realized the SOUND of the hit wasnt right for that.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:38 am
  • I am not a terrorist.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:38 am
  • Lowell singles to start the 9th.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:39 am
  • Lowell!
    Sign that man!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:39 am
  • Or a robot.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:39 am
  • Wow. That was a BAD bunt. We’re lucky we werent doubled up or at least Lowell was out.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:40 am
  • Lowell to 2nd on the sac.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:40 am
  • Lowell is going to walk. That man deserves four years, and the Sox will only offer two.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:40 am
  • Lowell steals third?
    Great job by Mikey there.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:41 am
  • Mike Lowell STEALS THIRD???
    *looks at the window*
    Hunh. Frogs.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:42 am
  • I heard Lowell wants 3/30, which I think is really, really reasonable. Especially with that speed!

    Jackie (SF) October 28, 2007, 12:42 am
  • I think the Sox offer three, birdman and I think Lowell takes it.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:42 am
  • Sac fly scores Mikey!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:43 am
  • Tek with the SAC fly.
    10-5

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:43 am
  • Way to manufacture runs there, boys. I love it.

    Jackie (SF) October 28, 2007, 12:43 am
  • Lugo grounds to end the inning.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:44 am
  • LETS GO PAPS!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:44 am
  • How on earth did Lowell, slowest man on two legs, steal third base?? A great steal, nonetheless, as that’s a big insurance run.

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:45 am
  • Paps in, 5 runs up….let’s goooo Sox!

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:45 am
  • I know, Paul! Hence the ‘raining frogs’ apocalypse comment..

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:46 am
  • I assume if Papelbon is successful, he gets the save, as it was a four-run game with two men on base when he entered?

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:48 am
  • I think so Paul.
    Helton flies out to right.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:48 am
  • One.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:49 am
  • The Sox have an age limit. A two year contract for Lowell will be per their protocol. They don’t play outside that, as they have absorbed from the Pats.

    Birdmanofvt October 28, 2007, 12:49 am
  • You are correct, Paul

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:49 am
  • I dunno, Bird. We’ll see. Theres nothign that can replace him on the market, except A-Rod who’d want an evenr WORSE age violation.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:50 am
  • Scarier than I would have liked…but nice resilience. Still two outs to go.

    Devine October 28, 2007, 12:50 am
  • Two!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:50 am
  • Atkins grounds to third.
    2 down.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:51 am
  • Now one.

    Devine October 28, 2007, 12:51 am
  • One more out to 3 games up…oh my goodness…

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:51 am
  • I hate the Vest look for basbeall uniforms. It just seems.. wrong to me.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:52 am
  • Oh.
    Shit.
Ells messed up there. Ah, rookies.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:53 am
  • Hawpe with a triple that plays pinball in the outfield.

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:54 am
  • They don’t play outside that,
Never say never. They bent the rules for Varitek, whom they regarded as valuable for his defense and clubhouse management even if his bat declined throughout the life of his four-year deal.
They may see Lowell similarly, and his position lends itself to a more gradual, less ugly decline in batting skills.

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:54 am
  • Ouch..badly played, Jacoby..

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:54 am
  • Took a weird hop though, but Ellsbruy got too close to it so he couldnt react.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:54 am
  • Heh. Hawpe: Too little, too late. He has really helped the Sox out this series by striking out over and over and over (x7).

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:55 am
  • I delight in the Rockies’ fans fruitlessly cheering at that hit. Mean, yes, but their cheers and attitude have irked me all night.
Make your postseason unscored upon, Paps…get an out.

    Devine October 28, 2007, 12:55 am
  • THREE!!!!!!!!!!!

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:55 am
  • 3!!!!
    3-0 Series Lead!!!

    Rob SF October 28, 2007, 12:55 am
  • Nice time for you longest win streak of the year.
    Foot officially on throat.

    Devine October 28, 2007, 12:55 am
  • Ball game!!
Jon Lester with the chance to win the clinching game tomorrow!! What a story that would be!

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:56 am
  • Sox Win! Sox Win!
Ellsbury the World Series MVP? Now.. Right this minute, I think its Papelbon. I WANT it to be Paps, jsut cause I think his interveiws would be halarious.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 12:56 am
  • Heh, good point, Devine. The Red Sox never won more than five games in a row all season — until now. Awesome.

    Paul SF October 28, 2007, 12:57 am
  • 3 games up, one to go.
You know, I know we need one more, but back after we won in ’04, I convinced my darling wife that the parade was a once in a life time opportunity, that I had been dreaming about it since I was old enough to say ‘Yankees suck,’ and that I would never ask for such an expensive trip again.
So someone PLEASE tell me what I can say now!!!!

    bostondreamer October 28, 2007, 12:59 am
  • Chloroform, dreamer. Chloroform.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 1:00 am
  • Still guys.. lets not get too excited. We gotta put them down right away. Dont let up. Go for the kill.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 1:03 am
  • If it’s a close game tomorrow Gagne might have to come up big … Would make another great story if he did.

pale blue eyes October 28, 2007, 1:09 am
  • I’m with you there… no mercy!

    Jackie (SF) October 28, 2007, 1:12 am
  • Paps didn throw all that many pitchs, PBE. He and Oki will still be available, I imagine. Timlin as well. MDC.. I dunno. Part of me says run him righ tback out there. Help his confidence.
But he was REALLY laborign with that strike zone.

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 1:13 am
  • Oh my god. Reporter just asked Tito “what advice would you give them, down 0-3?”
Tito: “I…. why would you ask me that? I’m not gonna answer that. I really don’t want them to win.” [laughter]
    Hilarious.

    Jackie (SF) October 28, 2007, 1:17 am
  • Thats.. just.. wow.
Who gave that reproter his/her press pass? Whoever did must revoke it immediately. That was the MOTHER of stupid questions

    Dionysus October 28, 2007, 1:42 am
  • “Let’s not get too excited.”
I don’t…really see why not. This is pretty goddamn exciting.

    Devine October 28, 2007, 2:08 am
  • Hear hear, Devine. I won’t pop the cork quite yet, but I’m just about as psyched as I can be.

    Jackie (SF) October 28, 2007, 2:37 am
  • Picking an MVP for this series is tough, only because everyone has contributed. Maybe someone pulls away in Game 4.
If there’s a Game 5, it might be Beckett.
