Offensive Offenses: Jays-Sox Gamer V

Accuscore

Maybe I am late to the game, but ESPN now features as part of their previews a graphic indicating a projection for each contest to be played.  Tonight a mysterious organization called "Accuscore" gives the Red Sox a 58% chance of emerging victorious, based on some fancy logarithmic calculation involving Manny Ramirez’ career OPS against Dustin McGowan, the wind speed at the top of the Green Monster, Daisuke Matsuzaka’s gametime body temperature, and David Eckstein’s level on the Grit-O-Meterâ„¢.  We’re not sure whether to take much solace in a "58% chance of winning" (wow, the Sox have an 8% better chance than either winning or losing in equal likelihood!), but it’s gotta better than the reverse, right?  Interestingly, Accuscore predicts that Eckstein will have 4.6 at-bats tonight.  (Or were they discussing his height?)  It also predicts that the Sox will hit 1.04 homers, which as far as I can tell is more likely to be a better measure of the cumulative distance of all of Julio Lugo’s batted balls than an actual number of round-trippers.  For some reason the simulator kept conking out everytime "Virtual Tito" brought in Javy Lopez to face a lefty, an error message indicating "ERROR CODE 22555222- REVERSE SPLIT".

We don’t care much for simulators, at least not when we can watch the real thing.  So use this as your thread for late afternoon baseball discussions and tonight’s Sox-Jays contest. Lineups (Sox fans avert your eyes from the #6 – #9 spots, ugh) after the jump.

  • Sox lineup also here. As in, the post right above you.

    Paul SF April 30, 2008, 5:10 pm
  • Lineup wasn’t there when Matt posted, Paul.
I put it up once the Globe posted.

    SF April 30, 2008, 5:14 pm
  • Ahh. Thought it was a gratuitous ad. Apologies…

    Paul SF April 30, 2008, 5:35 pm
  • SF’s original post here made me chuckle multiple times. Very clever.
    Now please lose tonight!

  • “Daisuke Matsuzaka’s gametime body temperature”
I hope that this piece of information was not discovered with a rectal thermometer.

    SoxFan April 30, 2008, 6:19 pm
  • Solid first innign for Daisuke. Come on what offense we have left!

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:12 pm
  • and David Eckstein’s level on the Grit-O-Meterâ„¢
I laughed so hard when I read this that snot came out of my nose.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:15 pm
  • Do we in fact have any offense left?

    rootbeerfloat April 30, 2008, 7:16 pm
  • Pedroia makes me vomit. Youk tries but can’t hold up., This gonna go AWFUL

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:16 pm
  • WHOA!!!

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:17 pm
  • That was quite an F-Bomb by Youks

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:17 pm
  • I hope that this piece of information was not discovered with a rectal thermometer.
SIGH, you want to take all the fun out of taking your temperature!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:17 pm
  • HAHA I heard the f-bomb too!
Great play by the left-fielder to track down that ball.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:18 pm
  • Hey Dio, save some histrionics for the later innings, huh?
I mean, if Pedroia’s first pitch swing makes you want to vomit, how are you possibly going to top that when the Jays actually score? Gargle razorblades? Hula-hoop on the interstate? Sever a limb?

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 7:19 pm
  • WHOA what, Dio? Have some pity on those of us stuck on conf calls watching on gameday…

    rootbeerfloat April 30, 2008, 7:19 pm
  • NESN cut to the dugout after Youk struck out, rbf. He was wiping his face with a towel then shouteda nice and loud F-bomb. NESN, without a 7 secodn delay, broadcast it it in all its unbleeped glory

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:21 pm
  • Wow. Nice play Youk!

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:21 pm
  • Youuuuuuuuuk!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:21 pm
  • That’s hilarious. I miss EVERYTHING being at work!

    rootbeerfloat April 30, 2008, 7:22 pm
  • Dio – If you really want to vomit check out the yankees with bases loaded and no one out.

    rootbeerfloat April 30, 2008, 7:23 pm
  • Hey RBF, they’re lucky to have one out… it was bses loaded with zero outs before Matsui flied out.
Ugh, three straight balls to Giambi. Bonderman is afraid of the plate.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:25 pm
  • Jays down. Lets see some patience at the plate Manny, Mikey and… oh.. ummm…
    well, shit.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:27 pm
  • Daisuke with another three-up three-down inning. Nice to see.
Giambi hits a sac-fly, he hit it in the gap but it stayed in the air JUST long enough to get caught. Somehow Jeter doesn’t tag up and go to third cause he sucks, apparently.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:28 pm
  • Goddamnit Melky singles. 2-0 Yanks.
    Manny Ramirez drinks your milkshake!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:29 pm
  • I love Manny

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:29 pm
  • Ugh Lowell
    1. Why are you swinging at the first pitch?
    2. Why are you swinging at THAT pitch?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:30 pm
  • DOES NO ONE HAVE ANY PLATE EDISCIPLINE????????

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:31 pm
  • Hehe the Brewers are playing on ESPN, and they have the pitcher batting 8th, the catcher 9th. Gotta suck if you’re that catcher.
Ugh, at least Moss hit it hard. Come on Varitek!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:32 pm
  • Jorge Posada and Mike Lowell are groaning all the way to the bank. Have there been two less productive high profile position player signings this year?

    SF April 30, 2008, 7:32 pm
  • Tek is molasses. Jacoby would have been on second.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:33 pm
  • Last night’s win takes the edge off the fact that the Sox’ offense is pathetic right now, that’s two more innings of nothing, to go with eight yesterday and 9 the day before and 8 the day before that. This is brutal.

    SF April 30, 2008, 7:34 pm
  • Have there been two less productive high profile position player signings this year?
I started to type Barry Zito before realizing you said “position players”.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:35 pm
  • Tigers threatening in the 2nd, runners on 1st and 2nd with zero outs.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:36 pm
  • Daisuke is dealing.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:37 pm
  • Hey SF, what about Andruw Jones?

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 7:38 pm
  • Holy crap Pedroia is a f*cking vacuum!
    Haha Remdawg agrees.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:38 pm
  • Zito was last year, too.
Actually, come to think of it, A-Rod has been a bust too at his price!

    SF April 30, 2008, 7:38 pm
  • I’m a HUGE fan of this get-ahead-of-batters Daisuke.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:39 pm
  • SW: good call, he’s up there too.

    SF April 30, 2008, 7:40 pm
  • I know Zito was signed last year, but I think his bustitude (eww?) has been so great that it warrants mentioning. And to think he was the first pitcher I picked in my fantasy league.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:41 pm
  • What the hell? That pitch was a strike, AND he went around!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:43 pm
  • Whew, fly out to Coco. Daisuke survives the ump’s sudden shrunken strikezone.
Heh, try saying that five times fast.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:44 pm
  • Screw this ump

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:45 pm
  • Screw Coco. WHERE’S OUR DISCIPLINE????

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:48 pm
  • Also, SF, back on the bad position player contracts, think of all the money Toronto is paying Frank Thomas to play for Oakland this year (since we are watching a Jays game). That signing wasn’t this year, but that’s a terrible waste of money.

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 7:49 pm
  • six runs in the last 38+ innings. Oof.

    SF April 30, 2008, 7:52 pm
  • Good call stuck, that was a HORRIBLE move by the Jays. “Oh my God, Frank Thomas isn’t hitting well IN THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE SEASON. Let’s get rid of him! That way we don’t have to play him, but we still get to pay him!”
And people wonder why the Blue Jays suck.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:52 pm
  • Lugo is back to his old self, his average is going to hit .250 very soon, dropping like a stone.

    SF April 30, 2008, 7:54 pm
  • First decent at bat of the night even if it ends in an out. Hope everyone else was watchign and learning.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:54 pm
  • And I did qualify the expensive bust as a “high profile signing”, which Frank Thomas marginally qualifies as. Big name, but well past his prime. Lowell and Posada were coming off huge seasons, they were aging but not old, and Lowell had just won a WS MVP. I was careful with my descriptives.

    SF April 30, 2008, 7:55 pm
  • Daisuke sits Mr Grit down on three pitches. Nice to see.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:56 pm
  • That was a n amazing grtty strike out by Gritmaster Eckstein. Hell, it wasnt even a strike out. It was a grit-out

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 7:57 pm
  • Wow, this ump’s strikezone is changing by the inning. It was a strike call, which helps Daisuke, but it’s really lame to have the strikezone floating all over the place.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:58 pm
  • Okay this strikezone is BS.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 7:59 pm
  • Goddamnit stairs singles. F*ck you, ump.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:01 pm
  • Shit, 4-pitch walk.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:03 pm
  • Wow, the trivia question of the night: who was the last pitcher to lose three straight complete games?
    Roy Halladay in 2003.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:04 pm
  • WHEW, great play by Lowell to end the inning.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:05 pm
  • These offense-free games move at a pretty good clip.

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 8:06 pm
  • I’d still love some offense, stuck. From the Sox, that is.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 8:08 pm
  • *sighs* Youk ground out.
    God damn it.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 8:09 pm
  • Wow, McGowan K’s Ortiz on a wicked curveball.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:11 pm
  • “The Red Sox have gone 36 innings between Extra Base Hits”
Wow, that’s even crazier than the lack-of-runs stretch we have going.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:12 pm
  • Geez, the curveball gets Manny too.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:13 pm
  • Are we really this bad? Thsi is atrocious baseball we’re playing.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 8:13 pm
  • If the Sox lose this one, it’s the last day we get to say it’s only April.

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 8:17 pm
  • Just the offense, Dio.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:18 pm
  • Another 1-2-3 inning for Dice. He’s at 82 pitches after 5.0 innings. Not amazing efficiency, but still good considering he’s only allowed 3 baserunners.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:22 pm
  • Lowell gives it a ride but it dies in the air.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:24 pm
  • SO much frustration. Lowell should have had a double. Stupid weather.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 8:26 pm
  • Tek looked simply confused up there.

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 8:28 pm
  • At least Pettitte just gave up the lead in the Yanks game.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:31 pm
  • Wow GREAT play by Daisuke to get to first.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:32 pm
  • And Pettitte gives up another homerun! 4-2 Tigers.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:32 pm
  • Goddamnit, double off the wall.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:37 pm
  • I was hoping Daisuke would start the 7th, but he’s up over 100 pitches now so that’s doubtful.
Wow, fan bare-hands a foul ball that was SCORCHED at him.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:39 pm
  • Delcarmen up in the ‘pen. Looks like we’ll see the patented Delcarmen-Okajima-Papelbon 7th-8th-9th, unless some runs are given up.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • STRIKEOUT ends the inning! Runs please.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • On a completely unrelated note, I just flipped over to TNT for the end of the Cavs/Wiz game and I must say: Gilbert Arenas has a very nice outfit on.

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 8:43 pm
  • Coco and Julio battling to see who can get to .200 first.

    SF April 30, 2008, 8:44 pm
  • Wow, how did Lebron miss that shot? And more importantly, how did they not call a foul on him?
    Gilbert’s got a kick-ass blazer on.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:45 pm
  • I see we share a fashion sense, Atheose.

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 8:46 pm
  • Hey, Coco is hitting .281 and Lugo is at .284. Both are better than they performed last year, so I’ll take it.
I also maintain that Lugo is looking a LOT more relaxed at the plate. This is a great at-bat too; he’s worked a full count and fouled off a few pitches. And then he grounds out. Bleh.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:47 pm
  • I hate this team right now

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • (sigh) Anyone remember the old days? You know, when the Sox could actually get more than 5 hits a game?

    bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • Stuck, I’ve got an old calf-skin blazer that’s almost the same color as Gilbert’s. It’s a tad darker, but still sweet nonetheless.
Wow, ump is squeezing McGowan now. Not that I’m complaining…

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • Pedroia grounds out to McGowan, goddamnit. Delcarmen likely coming in for Daisuke, though Gameday is so far behind that I’m not sure. Yet another great pitching performance that will go unrewarded.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Coco and Julio were hitting in the mid .300s about a week ago. Their averages are artificial, and will be much lower in another week, I am pretty confident. Coco is a lost cause at the dish, and Lugo has no power left at all. Wonder where it went…

    SF April 30, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • 40-something innings and six runs. F*ck these guys. Halladay I can understand, but come on, Shields? McGowan? EDWIN JACKSON? Seriously?

    SF April 30, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • Nevermind, Daisuke still out there. He gives up his third long fly ball in a row, Manny did a good job of tracking it down.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:53 pm
  • SF, did you see Daisuke’s face after that fly ball? He clearly looks gassed.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:53 pm
  • The ball keeps jsut dying, fortunatley for us this time.
I’m SHOCKED Daisuke is still in this agem with such a rested pen.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 8:53 pm
  • Not watching. I didn’t subscribe to Extra Innings this season, trying to save the family some money. It’s awful. I am probably going to succumb soon, I’ve already told Mrs SF that I can’t deal with not watching any games. I hate Gameday as well, the terrible delay isn’t helping lessen a desire to spend the money.

    SF April 30, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • 1-2-3 inning for Daisuke. 7IP, 2H, 2BB, 4K. Great outing.
PLEASE GET HIM SOME RUNS! At least we get Youk, Papi and Manny.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • SF, would MLB.tv be cheaper? Certainly the quality would be less but wouldn’t it give you the games and still save you some money?

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • Yeah, maybe Dio, but is MLB.tv any good? I tried it last year for a week and it too sucked, just like Gameday.

    SF April 30, 2008, 8:59 pm
  • F*CK YES PAPIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • I LOVE MY BIG PAPI!

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • PAPI!

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • McGowan’s actually been pretty good this year. Still, you’d think we could do better than one hit.
    As I type… Thank you Ortiz! :D

    Jackie (SF) April 30, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • I use mlb.tv SF, and it’s fantastic. I don’t know what your friend is talking about.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • I also use MLB.tv… it’s frustrating at times, but for the price it’s a great deal. If you can hook your computer up to the teevee (or a projector) it’s fantastic, and I like being able to watch/listen at work (since most of the games start at 4pm PST…)

    Jackie (SF) April 30, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Lowell doubles! If I was a Jays Fan I’d be screaming to have McGowan pulled.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Its been great for me SF. I have Premium which may help but its been very reliable and generally lag free. There were a few issues early in the season but smooth since then.
Also when you get Premium you get Mosaic, which through a variety of window size combinatiosn lets you watch several games at once. I have the Sox in a larger window and Yanks/Tigers and Indians/Mariners in medium size windows. You can swtich the audio to any window by just clicking on it. Its sweet.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • Wow. So that’s what a homer looks like! Thanks, Papi!

    bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • I shelled out the extra cash for MLB.tv Premium, and it’s top-notch. It can be annoying at times, but if you have broadband internet (who doesn’t nowadays?) then it’s great. I have an old laptop whose screen broke, so I hooked it up to an external monitor mounted to my desk and use it pretty much exclusively for playing mlb.tv and movies that are on my server.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Man, I soudn like an infomercial.
Moss Ks but we get the run thanks to Papi. Oki… Paps… make it stick.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:05 pm
  • Yeah Dio, the mosiac is cool as hell. I usually just watch one game at a time, though it’s nice for watching several fantasy players at the same time.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:06 pm
  • Uhhh, is anyone else a little worried that we have Delcarmen out there instead of Okajima?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • MDC… not Oki… feeling.. ill… vomit.. rising.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:07 pm
  • Not Okajima, huh? Well, kid can throw heat…and curveballs. Base hit.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • WHY ISNT OKI THERE? FRAKING FRANCONA

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • Delcarmen immediately gives up a single to the #8 hitter, fastball right down the middle.
OH THANK YOU JESUS, Francona wastes no time in pulling Delcarmen.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • Oh, not throwing THIS one away, huh, Tito? Let me say right now that if Oki blows this, it is totally not Francona’s fault.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • Where is OKI?

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • WTF was the point of that whol thing? You go RIGHT to Oki. OKI is your setup man. Not MDC. God DAMN it.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:09 pm
  • That move makes no sense to me, pulling MDC after one and bringing in Oki. Why didn’t he start the inning with Okajima?

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:11 pm
  • We are goign to lose this game. Frak frak frak.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • The one downside of MLB.tv… not postgame show. I wont get to hear Tito defend the absurd MDC decision

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • F*CK.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • Tsk.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • Thanks for the “managing”, Tito. Isn’t the manager supposed to enable his players’ efforts, not hinder them?
Brutal job by the skipper tonight.

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • Oh my god this umpire is horrible.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • NICE CATCH! Tied.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:17 pm
  • Holy crap great catch by Moss! A run scores, but he probably saved one there too.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:18 pm
  • Anyone else sweating profusely while watching this game?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Gift strike says the NESN equivalent of K-Zone.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:20 pm
  • Hehe Eckstein 0-4 tonight. That puts a big smile on my face.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:20 pm
  • Eck Ks. If Oki starts this innign we’d still be winning.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:20 pm
  • Atheose…the girl knows I’ve been watching Red Sox baseball if my hands are damp and clammy.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:21 pm
  • Listening to it on XM. Castiglione said the most frightening words, at least currently”
‘Mike Timlin is loosening up, and Papelbon has taken a seat.’
    Ugh.

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:21 pm
  • Oki is good.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • OKAJIMA!
This would not be a tie-f*cking-game if Tito had just brought out Okajima in the first place. What the hell?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:22 pm
  • Another K.
Why didnt OKi start the inning?

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:23 pm
  • Atheose…the girl knows I’ve been watching Red Sox baseball if my hands are damp and clammy.
Mine knows based on the yelling and cursing coming from my room.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • Tito managing with the same intensity as the offense. Asleep there.
    Tek-Lugo-Crisp. Ugh.

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:27 pm
  • You suck, Eckstein! Your first baseman saved you!

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:28 pm
  • Eckstein barely gets the ball to first base. Hehe.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:28 pm
  • Nice, Crisp! Anyone got a nice, solid single in them?

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • GOD BLESS COCO!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • Coco says to me: FU!

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • You might be pushing your starters a little hard, Gibbons. 3-0 to Lugo?

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:31 pm
  • Coco and Lugo both flick SF off, two on with one out.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:32 pm
  • Double steal here?

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:33 pm
  • Coco hurt? Radio says he is favoring his leg

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:35 pm
  • Damn. A fly out on 3 and 1. C’mon Youk.

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:37 pm
  • I can see why the Jays manager has been avoiding using his bullpen… three straight balls before giving up a long fly ball to Pedroia. Coco tags up… can Youk be the hero AGAIN?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:37 pm
  • And that is that.

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Bah, tie game still. Okajima is staying out there? I guess that’s better than Timlin.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Wait nevermind, gameday was slow to change it. Papelbon out in another tie game.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:41 pm
  • Im so Angry. I can barely type. My hands are shaking.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:41 pm
  • Lead off single? Shit!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • Lead off frakign single. KABOOM goes my chest

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • Who the heck stole our bats? This is nuts. And it has to start getting in their heads. Why can’t we hit all of the sudden????

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • At least the Jays aren’t sac-bunting. That’s what I’d do.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • YEAH!!! PICKED OFF!!!

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:44 pm
  • Pick! Yay!

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:45 pm
  • OMFG YES PAPELBON PICKS OFF MCDONALD!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:45 pm
  • Wells grounds out, would have been a DP ball. Two down.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:46 pm
  • Great pickoff move. Amazing. The league’s gonna start talking.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:46 pm
  • Paps missing now. 2-0. Come ON. GET HIM.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:47 pm
  • I know Vernon Wells is a great hitter and all, but I would have sac-bunted. Glad they didn’t.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:48 pm
  • 3-1 now. Put this guy away Paps!
    3-2.
Holy cow.. anyone see the Cubs score? Cubs hav 12 runs and its only the 4th.
Oh thank god that went foul.

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:49 pm
  • Could someone just blast one and cook this game? Extra innings would just be gross.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:49 pm
  • Holy crap Pedroia is a one-man highlight reel!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:49 pm
  • DUSTIN FREAKING PEDROIA

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:50 pm
  • Pedroia deserves a gold glove!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:50 pm
  • Wow, Suppan gave up 11 runs in 3 2/3 innings!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:51 pm
  • my little 4 year old brother-in-law who doesnt k now much english let alone baseball (Dont worry hes a Sox fan already) He took my headphones earlier and was repeating some of the things said and I saw Ortiz coming up I asked him if Papi was gonna homer he said yes…. sure enough.
I then went to the kitchen to do some things and a few mins later he screams “OH MY GOD” to toronto tying it. lol

    TJ April 30, 2008, 9:52 pm
  • *Clutches David Ortiz bobblehead in hands*

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:52 pm
  • TJ, good job assimilating him!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:53 pm
  • What was wrong with the first pitch to Papi? Gameday shows it as a clear strike, not really anywhere near borderline.

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:53 pm
  • ORTIZ SINGLES INTO THE SHIFT! Repeat of last night?
    Okay Tito, PLEASE pinch run.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:54 pm
  • Papi gets through the shift and is on first base.
    Come on Manny!

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 9:54 pm
  • *pretends David Ortiz bobblehead is a Manny Ramirez bobblehead*

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:55 pm
  • Ortiz was not meant to run. Ortiz was not meant to run. Ortiz was not meant to run.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:56 pm
  • Radio guys say that the only guy on the bench that could run is Lowrie, but Coco may be hurt….

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:56 pm
  • Walked. Can we pinch-run? We can! Sweet.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 9:57 pm
  • Lowrie in to run for papi

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:57 pm
  • Well, this is all set up for a great win or major disappointment.

    SF April 30, 2008, 9:58 pm
  • Coco is in CF, boston.
Manny walked, Ortiz to 2nd. Lowrie now pinch-running for Ortiz. Thank goodness.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:58 pm
  • Why the f*ck is Ortiz limping? Why the f*ck is Ortiz limping? WHY THE F*CK IS ORTIZ LIMPING?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 9:58 pm
  • Yeah, Atheose, I think what they meant was that COCO may need to be replaced in center, should this go on.
    But i won’t. I hope. c’mon Lowell!

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 9:59 pm
  • Boooo shitty call by the ump for strike 2.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:00 pm
  • Eh. He had his best season ever on a bum knee–I can’t say I’m seriously concerned.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:00 pm
  • ooh, Gameday made that fourth pitch to Lowell look like he should have been rung up. Is this home plate umpire terrible or is Gameday off?

    SF April 30, 2008, 10:00 pm
  • Oh, c’mon! NOW you guys decide not to swing?

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 10:01 pm
  • Oy. Moss looked crap his last AB…just get one over the infield’s head!

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:01 pm
  • Ohhh, okay Boston. That makes more sense than what I thought you meant.
2-2 to Lowell… strike 3 called on the inside corner. Shouldn’t have let that go by, was a good pitch.
    Brandon Moss up… ugh.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:01 pm
  • This ump is terrible, SF. He’s calling strikes balls and balls strikes. All over the place.
    2-0 to Moss

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:02 pm
  • Oy vey.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:03 pm
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 10:03 pm
  • GODDAMNIT he touched the f*cking plate! WHAT KIND OF A GODDAMN CALL IS THAT BULLSHIT?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:04 pm
  • Damn…good job by the catcher.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:04 pm
  • great play by barajas.

    sf rod April 30, 2008, 10:04 pm
  • Why do you send him? Why?? Wels has an arm and fielded it clean! Why??? Figures.

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 10:04 pm
  • Gameday picked the perfect time to start lagging for me too. Sigh.
Okay nevermind, good block by Barajas. Unfortunately Manny didn’t run, so he’s on 2nd instead of 3rd.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:05 pm
  • Swinging at that high stuff, Tek. That’s an uuuuugly strike one.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:05 pm
  • It was a great play, Boston. The ball was slow rolling into CF and Lowrie never hesitated, I thought he would be safe by a mile.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:06 pm
  • YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:06 pm
  • holding gut needing drink.

    sf rod April 30, 2008, 10:06 pm
  • Wheee!

    SF April 30, 2008, 10:07 pm
  • YES! SAME PLAY BUT MANNY SCORES! MANNY SCORES! MANNY SCORES!

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:07 pm
  • HOLY CRAP! YES!

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 10:07 pm
  • OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!!!!!!!!!

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 10:07 pm
  • Jesus christ I need to go throw up.
Manny did a cool helmet-flipping strut after scoring. That was awesome, despite being exactly like last night’s play, and the play two minutes ago.
    Dirty. Goddamn. Water.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:08 pm
  • Okay, y’know, the walk-off wins are fun, and I will totally take this 17-12 April.
But we desperately need middle relief and to win games the old-fashioned way…by 4 or 5 runs.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:09 pm
  • The string of awesome starts continues by the way.

    Devine April 30, 2008, 10:10 pm
  • Devine, it’s LEGAL to score that many runs in a game? Wow. When did this happen?
    Oh what a win!

    Bostondreamer April 30, 2008, 10:11 pm
  • Yeah, when the hell did we become a NL team that either wins 2-1 or loses 1-2 every night?

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:13 pm
  • Gadzooks. What a pair of games.

    stuck working April 30, 2008, 10:16 pm
  • Great startign pitchign too. If the offense and the starters get hot at the same time.. watch out!

    Dionysus April 30, 2008, 10:17 pm
  • for all the bitching i’ve done in my life about leaving baserunners stranded, i’d kill to say that’s our problem right now. just 9 baserunners tonight with 4 of them coming in the 9th inning.
bless our starting pitching. they’re giving us a chance to win every nite. the core of the relief corps are on the mound nightly. scoring some runs would help the bullpen a ton.
i’m sure burrnet is gonna throw a gem tomorrow. we’ll see what wake’s got.

    sf rod April 30, 2008, 10:20 pm
  • Yeah, we complain a lot about stranded runners but that’s an inherent issue when you have a team with a huge OBP like the Red Sox do. It’s definitely not the worst kind of problem an offense can have, and I think I’ll complain a lot less when it starts happening again.
That is, I hope it starts happening again.

    Atheose April 30, 2008, 10:40 pm
  • Four straight starts with a 75 game score — which has never happened, as far as we know, in Sox history. None of the pitchers gets a decision. Amazing. You just never know with baseball…
I would take issue with some of the complaints about the offense. Shields, Halladay and McGowan all have games like these in them. The Sox are going through a nasty stretch of intradivision opponents with good young pitchers. I’m not sure how much of this is cold bats and how much is running into a bunch of really good starters in one stretch.
