“One man’s shit is another man’s ice cream.”

The wisdom of Brian Cashman, as reported in a fine feature on the Yankee GM in New York Magazine.

“Brian comes off as very humble, but he is one street-savvy motherfucker. People who underestimate him in any way—he will cut their throats,” says one agent. Lots of juicy tidbits here, from the fact that Contreras was dealt to Chicago, in part, to keep Loaiza from going to the Sox, through San Diego, and that the Sox wanted Vazquez more than Schilling.

So, is Cash getting tired of George’s crap? Let’s just say Theo better watch out for his job. Says Mary Cashman: “Brian would like to go to Boston and win the World Series as general manager of the Red Sox. That would be any man’s dream, to go up there and become the god of Boston.”

  • Yes, he’s soooooooooooo smart, keeping Loaiza from the Sox. Another example of Cashman’s “genius”; it’s been such a sweet move so far.
(Or, maybe he already IS working for the Sox?)

  • Your shit, his ice cream. That deal saves him $12 million.

  • My point is “keeping him away from the Sox” as a reason to make the deal. Again – THANKS, BRIAN.

  • No matter the reason, the Loaiza-Contreras deal was a very good move. Despite Loaiza’s recent outings, I trust him in a critical playoff situation more than Contreras, and that’s the key (although with the way the other starters are throwing Loaiza may not even get that chance now).
Why does it seem that every time the Yanks have the night off the Sox play the Rays on ESPN?

  • AAAAAAAARGH. My point isn’t that this is a good deal or a bad deal, but that if this is the deal that they use to illustrate Cash’s genius, then I am utterly unconvinced. If they show how Cashman worked the phones to get the Chisox to take the utterly inept Contreras for Loaiza, despite the Chisox’ reservations, then I am sold. But to say that he did it to keep him from the Bosox when it was also clear from Kenny Williams’ statements that the White Sox coveted Contreras and then point to that as evidence of BC’s absolutely expert abilities is moronic. The Vazquez deal is better evidence of his skills (though anything involving the Expos is tainted, in my opinion), not a Loaiza deal that was supposedly defensive (if that’s even believable in the first place).

  • Benefit #1 of having a big lead: No doctor’s note required.
During last night’s Sox-Rays broadcast the announcers (I think it was specifically Brantley) insinuated that Ramirez should fight through his flu and play. Obviously, Brantley has never had the flu or is just a sadist. Meanwhile, any Yankee can take any day off and it won’t be scrutinized (i.e. Posada over the last few days). It pays to be ahead.

  • Mary Cashman is smoking crack. I wonder what George does after he reads articles like that? Blow up at Torre for starting Lofton? I’m thinking its much worse….plus does anyone really believe Cash would leave George to work for Larry? I don’t.

    Casey August 10, 2004, 2:04 pm
  • Guess what, Casey – any of these guys would work for any of the other guys, if the money and power are there. And George will be dead before Cashman’s done GMing.
Cashman is just as likely to work for the Sox as any other team in baseball. GM career shelf lives are short within any given organization. Cashman is young. So it may not happen anytime soon, but I would never dismiss the possibility, not in a million years.

  • cashman could work for boston. wouldn’t make a difference. without steinbrenner’s willingness to cut a check, he wouldn’t have gotten a-rod for either team.
they didn’t lose a-rod because theo was stupid. they lost him because john w. henry wouldn’t pony up the dough.

  • beth and SF you guys are right. i think cash should hire arm tellem for negotiations. oh wait, that must have been the ghost of Mary Cashman talking. The question that SHOULD be asked is this: would Theo ever work for the Boss? My guess is yes and Theo being the hottie he is (lets not forget Cash IS married), he’d have a ball. What shocked me the most is that Cash is only getting 1m this year. Sucks to be him, non?
