Options, Options

Sheff thinks the Yanks are picking up option for 2007. Cashman says the Yanks would love to have Sheff back, but they’re not signing anything just yet. At least he’s in camp. Manny is exercising his option, team-approved, to arrive late, on March 1. He’s a busy guy; all that fielding practice totally interferes with his Olympics-watching schedule. Go Sasha!

Sheffield thinks the Yankees are going to pay $13Million for a 38 year old version of him? With Giambi on the roster? Hows that going to work? Can Sheffield play first

  • Never, ever underestimate what the Yankees are willing to spend on a player in their late thirties or even early forties.

  • He’s worth it. If just to get Sox season ticket holders in trouble with the law.

  • Sheffield’s decline in his late 30’s has been minimal. He’s still one of the stronger hitters out there. Given his remarkable bat speed, I anticipate that he’ll be a very good hitter for a couple of more years. I think he’s worth the 13 million even with Giambi clogging the DH spot.
If the Yanks had succeeded in signing Giles this off-season, I’d be guessing that this would be Sheff’s last year. I don’t think there are outfielders who match Giles or Sheff in the 2007 free agent pool.

  • I admire Sheff for his hitting and his effort. His annual spring comments about his contract are best ignored.
