Palate Cleanser? Sox-Giants Gamer III

A day after the Yanks swept a doubleheader and the Rays won to go ahead by percentage points in the division, the Sox try to recover against Barry Zito (a soft-tossing lefty…what could possibly go wrong?!). Felix Doubront will try to recover from getting shellacked by the Yanks. I will hopefully get this awful taste out of my mouth.

  • Middlebrooks being vereh, vereh good since he came back is one of the few good stories of the past couple weeks. 2-0 Sox after 1.5 as Will sends it out to left.

  • 2-1 as Arias homers.

  • Hate to see you go, Barry. 6-1 Sox as Zito is chased by Victorino’s 2-out run-scoring double in the 4th.

  • I still can’t believe that we lost yesterday’s game (and the way they did it). This looks much better.

Wonder if the Orioles will do something for their wildcard hopes tonight.

  • Doubront solid today. I see Pete Abraham calls him Doubie, with a ‘u’ … not a member of the Doobie Brothers then?

  • Breaking news: Mike Napoli strikes out!!!!

  • Good to see Pedey motoring home on Salty’s RBI single. I was seriously worried when he fouled one off his foot in the Yankees series.

And now Drew homers and makes it 11-1 Sox. That should be good enough for a win.

  • Xander in at third and immediately fails to throw out Posey. Tough play though. Middlebrooks at second which I believe is a first in history.

  • And then the 6-4-3 double play. Nice.

And Arias flies out. Quick inning. Doubie at 95 pitches after seven.

  • E1 allows Nava to score.

More breaking news: Mike Napoli does not strike out – but grounds into a double play instead. But since we’re told again and again that he’s a streaky hitter he’ll get incredibly hot in September. And at least today we do not need him to hit well.

  • I once saw the Giants play the Cardinals at AT&T Park (which was then called Pac Bell Park or something like that). Great place to watch a ballgame. Great place to play a ballgame for the Sox today.

  • Doubie at 114 pitches after eight. That should be enough for him. Villareal in the ninth?

  • According to gameday Big Papi left the game with a back injury. Just what we need. Hope it’s nothing serious. They might have him sit in L.A. to get ready for the next homestand.

  • Mariners beat the A’s 5-3. That improves our situation in the wildcard standings, but on the other hand I want the A’s to win the West. Probably best to root for both the A’s and the Rangers to lose as many games as possible. Except when they’re playing the Rays or the Yanks, of course, but I don’t know if this is going happen again this season.

  • I was kidding about Villareal but Koji in a 12-1 game? I mean, really??

  • Scutaro grounds out to Middlebrooks.

  • Belt strikes out on three pitches.

  • Sanchez grounds out to Drew. Six pitches for Koji. That should keep him sharp for Chavez Ravine.

Good win, back in first at least for a few hours, but I’m still not over yesterday’s loss.
