Paradigm Shift

I mentioned this in Paul’s thread below, but I believe that the A-Rod-Ortiz MVP debate is a thing of the past. They’re not even the two best players on their team this season. Looking at the stats, watching the games, we’re forgetting two obvious choices: Derek Jeter and Manny Ramirez. They’ve been so consistently good for us these many years that I think we’re taking them for granted. So my vote for MVP right now is the lady’s man. My second choice is the space cadet. I guess I’m trying to say that  Jeter’s better.

This thread won’t top 10 comments. I bet you Paul’s A-Rod/Ortiz post does.

  • My MVP will always be Mariano Rivera. If you want to talk about any player’s invaluable-ness to his team, it’s obvious that Yankees are going nowhere fast if he’s not there. As this season has shown, offense can be (mostly) replaced. Not Mo.

  • How much better are Manny’s numbers if he has protection in the No. 5 hole? Trot is not helping him at all. Tito is going to have to make a decision soon and where Tek and Trot bat in the order.
As far as the MVP stuff goes, I’m not touching it, except to say that the winner will be decided from here on. There’s no clear-cut leader right now. Not even close.
And, does anyone think the White Sox or Tigers have any candidates? Jermaine Dye will get serious consideration.

  • Yesterday, I was thinking Ortiz as MVP, mostly because of his RBI total on the team with the second-best record (by .5 games.. knock, knock, Sox), but your post makes me rethink about Manny.
YM: You’re right, and I bet a lot of players on the team would agree with you too.
Is Rollie Fingers the only reliever to win an MVP? Gagne didn’t win in 2003 and he was incredible that year.

  • YM: I should have been more specific within the context of team MVP, not from within the context of the voting process to determine league MVP.

  • Bill, I don’t know how much better he would be. One thing about Manny that has always amazed me among many things is his consistency. His numbers this year are right about on the mark for his (stellar) career season averages.

  • Fingers 1981
    Willie Hernandez 1984
    Eck 1992

  • Clearly, ARod’s not the MVP of the Yankees this season. The Papi/Manny debate is a good one, though I still vote Papi (though Manny is very hot right now, and if he keeps that up, I reserve the right to change my mind). It’s a tossup for me between Jeter and Rivera.
The post below was really just a comment I thought was funny about the topics on this blog that seem to generate tons and tons of comments and controversy (how did a post about defensive ratings turn into an MVP debate anyway?) At least I thought it was funny. I guess if you have to explain the joke… :-P

  • Good info Bill.
I would have remembered Eck if I thought about it. I never would have recalled Willie Hernandez.

  • I think it’s an outrage that Mo didn’t win the Cy Young last season. The award besmirched itself by going to Colon.

  • Left coast FOX isn’t showing any early games. It’s back-to-back children’s cartoons for 3 hours. The 1:00 PDT game is Cards/Cubs, which admittedly is interesting to me personally and I understand the decision by FOX to air it because there are Cubs fans everywhere, but in the day and age of 200 channels why only one game, FOX?

  • That post was meant to be in the Sox gamers thread. Oh well. It’s just me bitching about FOX again. Everyone’s tired of that.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 2:34 pm
  • Clearly it’s because FOX is evil and enjoys torturing people. Why do you hate America, FOX?

  • yeah, I realized the joke and thought it a good one. I guess reading these A-Rod/Ortiz threads has worn on me and I was hoping to point people in a new direction. Saw your post as a springboard for that.
