Paying My Respects to the Enemy

Paying My Respects to the Enemy
Just walked by this while on vacation and was able to restrain myself from doing something foolish (or illegal!). Don’t want to tempt the baseball Gods.

  • Joba suspended 2 games.

  • can we put away the pro-yankee bias of Bob watson now?
How about he is just an arrogant prick all around with no consistency what so ever.

    Sam-YF August 31, 2007, 6:02 pm
  • I don’t think this is some sort of bias against the Yankees either, if you read NYYFans, they pretty much all think MLB has it out for the Yankees, this is just the way MLB is operating now and I think it’s BS, I don’t care who the team is. I liked it a lot more when they let the players handle these things on the field.

    LocklandSF August 31, 2007, 6:04 pm
  • Oh, and I agree with you Sam.

    LocklandSF August 31, 2007, 6:05 pm
  • I mean Okajima threw a ball up and in during the previous half inning. Why doesnt he get a suspension. I dont think it was on purpose personally but how can we know? How does Bob Watson know whats on purpose and what is not?
This is a joke. Im not as upset about the consequences (joba was out tonite no matter what) as I am about the way these things are handled. Clearly Watson was still a little peaved about Torre coming to Tito’s defense calling the uniform hunt “a farce”

  • Sam, because it was one pitch, probably in the low 80s.
Not two pitches, back to back, 98-99, at Youks head.
I’m not saying they were intentional, in fact I’m certain they were not, but the umpire had to make a spot judgment call.

    LocklandSF August 31, 2007, 6:15 pm
  • What bullshit. Boo.

    Rob_in_CT August 31, 2007, 6:22 pm
  • Man, they were barely even near Youk’s head. He barely had to move.
Whatever. The Yankees will overcome bullshit from MLB, as they always do.

    AndrewYF August 31, 2007, 6:26 pm
  • And just as an addition – yes, this clearly, CLEARLY is bullshit. And all talk of Bob Watson somehow being Yankee biased can be put to bed – forever.
Remember when the Toronto pitchers THREW BEHIND A-Rod, again and again, until they hit him? They didn’t even get CONSIDERED in Clemens’ punishment.
It’s bullshit, but it happens against the Yankees just as much, if not more, than other teams. There is absolutely no question, whatsoever, that Bob Watson has no more affiliation for the Yankees than Fidel Castro has to the Bush Administration. MLB needs to…do something inappropriate.

    AndrewYF August 31, 2007, 6:30 pm
  • Lockland I wasnt serious about Okajima but its just that this is a guy who basically acts as a dictator of punishment and is very arbitrary in his dolling out of suspensions.
    Oh well…

    Sam-YF August 31, 2007, 6:31 pm
  • You throw 100 mph anywhere near a batters head, you’re going to get more scrutiny than say, Wakefield. That’s just the way it is, to claim this has something to do with the Yankees is just silly, come on.

    LocklandSF August 31, 2007, 6:31 pm
  • !@#$!!!
At least Joba wouldn’t have pitched the next 2 games anyway, had he finished the 9th. The Yankees won’t be tempted to use him the D-Rays series, and he’ll be fresh for the Seattle games.

    doug YF August 31, 2007, 6:33 pm
  • Also, Watson is fully aware of the rules surrounding the Yankees use of Joba.
If anything, this was a warning to Beckett and Matsuzaka that this ends now, they don’t want the soap opera spilling over in to the final series.

    LocklandSF August 31, 2007, 6:34 pm
  • Yes, MLB is out to get the Yankees, probably their biggest meal ticket, most marketable franchise. Does anyone realize how silly this sounds?
Watson is an idiot, his dugout appearance a couple days ago established as much. And he”s clearly an egomaniac. But he (and MLB) are NOT out to get the Bombers. Puh-leeze.

    SF August 31, 2007, 6:36 pm
  • It’s silly? Puh-leeze. So a pitcher who throws hard is not allowed to pitch inside to a batter? Chamberlain would have been closer to Youk’s head if he had pitched a strike.

    AndrewYF August 31, 2007, 6:37 pm
  • Maybe Watson is setting the precedent now, lest there be any further questions:
One overhead fastball = one day suspension
This has the benefit of being really easy to remember.

    FenSheaParkway August 31, 2007, 6:37 pm
  • Andrew, I said claiming this is part of a the MLB conspiracy against the Yankees is silly.

    LocklandSF August 31, 2007, 6:39 pm
  • This is insane. If I am going to get suspended for throwing above a guy’s head I might as well hit him. Not saying hit him in the head, but might as well plunk em to send the message.
Now if it really was two slipped pitches (I won’t say what they were, I am not a mind reader) than this is even more crap.

    attackgerbil August 31, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • there is no conspiracy for or against the yanks or any team…period…
chamberlain has been a bit wild [check the walks]…but 2 in row?…given the yanks caution with him, it’s hardly anything he was directed to do…i think he had a couple get away from him and the umpire overreacted on the side of caution, or he’s got a little maverick in him, which is cool…i’m ok with the ump’s reaction…the suspension is bs, but he would have sat out 2 games anyway…lockland, i agree that the message sent is for both teams to knock off the nonsense…i hope they are as harsh if a yank actually gets hit as they were for youk’s near misses…i doubt it, based on past history, but one can hope…
