Pick Up Pavano?

That’s one of the minor and later but most eye-catching suggestions by Joe Sheehan for Fixing It, as in the Yankees.  Other suggestions include:

– Sign Teixeira
– Avoid all starters not named C.C., and maybe avoid him too
– Pick AP or Moose

All in all, it is an interesting read, especially the paragraph that nails the issue regarding horrible OBP performance up the middle, though I do wonder if he was watching the same Edwar Ramirez the last two months as I.

  • I think, barring SF or OAK going crazy and offering close to what the Yankees will offer, CC Sabathia will be a Yankee next year. I’ll be more surprised if we can get Texeira. I think there are going to be too many teams willing to pony up the big money.
My problem is whether or not (as Nick has mentioned to me before) the Yankees will also pay too long a contract to AJ Burnett?

  • I agree with a lot of what he has to say, but we differ in some places.
    1. Why sign Endy Chavez, you already have a better player in Brett Gardner? He’s faster, comparable on Defense and most likely very similar long term hitting wise.
    2. As for Pavano, sometimes a bargain ‘aint a bargain. There is WAY MORE to the person that is Carl Pavano than his contract. He’s soft, let someone else capitalize on that “bargain.”
    3. Where is pick up the option on Marte? You can never have too many quality lefties. Sure he had a difficult time here in NY, but he’s a lefty and he’s very good overall.
    4. Signing Abreu is not a bad idea, provided AJax won’t be ready until 2010. If he could be ready by the AS break or sooner why sign him.

  • If you can sign Sabathia and Manny (if he opts out) and resign Moose I think you have the key guys you need. Move Nady to RF and Posada to first.

  • It wasn’t an opt-out situation with Manny, but one where the trade was contingent on two team options being sliced from his contract. So he’s free. The Yanks just ain’t signing him. Some hair just can’t be cut. Grows too wild and free and makes too many headlines with his wild talk.
    The hair, that is.
