  • Drew doubles to deep left center field. Papi scores, Manny gunned out at home.
I guess we are going to have to try and force runs at times. What do you know, Drew has a hit that is an RBI.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 7:37 pm
  • It has been that way lately Scott.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 7:37 pm

    ToddSF July 20, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Wow, the guys can blow games all by themselves. They do NOT need help from the umps.

    rootbeerfloat July 20, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Aaargh- I don’t like replay, but that was a no-doubter. How did FOUR umpires miss that??

    Ayuh - SF July 20, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Dye strikes out swinging. Umpire has had a tight zone early on Beckett.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 7:39 pm

    Rob July 20, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • >>From Boston.com
After batting practice the Sox held a closed door team meeting for about 10 minutes. No one was really around to talk about what was discussed therein, but perhaps we’ll get some more insight on that after the game

    Rob July 20, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Maybe the Sox are getting disgusted with thier play of late.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 7:48 pm

  • that SUCKS

    rootbeerfloat July 20, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • I could just feel it coming. Thome homers to center, 3-1 WhiteSox.
Ozzie needs to make sure that bottle of whatever is in the Umps locker room for after the game. It should be 3-3.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • Konerko fouls out to 1st.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:04 pm
  • Pierzynski goes down swinging.
Well looks like we are behind again. A few innings to go before the dreaded 7th takes place.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Looks like this is going to be game of our pen before long. Beckett is already at 68 pitches. He averages 98 pitches a game.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • Lugo gets on base beating out an infield hit.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:11 pm
  • Francona should have gotten himself thrown out of the game. Worked for the Cubs.
He’s far too quiet for my taste.

    Atheose - SF July 20, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Lugo steals, Crisp strikes out.
Pedroia grounds out to short, Crisp to 3rd.
    Papi flies out to left.
    Runner stranded at 3rd.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • I was reading today on the net that the Sox BA with RISP has dropped almost 50 points since the first two months of the season.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:21 pm
  • Here is the picture of where Drew’s homer went over the red line.
    http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2007/07/picture_of_the.html

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Oh wait, Francona did get ejected. What I MEANT to say is that he should have gone ape-shit on the umpire like Lou Piniella.

    Atheose - SF July 20, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • Tito’s not the “apeshit” kind- he wasn’t as a player, and never has been as a manager. Hey, he did get tossed, so I’m sure he got his point across.

    Ayuh - SF July 20, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • TB up 4-0 on the Yanks.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:26 pm
  • Beckett with two more strikeouts. He has 8 in the game now.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:28 pm
  • Manny strikes out to start the bottom half of the 4th off.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • Drew flies out to center.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Lowell grounds out.
Of course, Contreras has pitched like crap all season. But a start against the Red Sox is just the tonic everyone is trying to get lately. Seems like we just keep making bad players look good.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Beckett with nine strikeous now. That should be it for him as he is now at 98 pitches through 5 innings.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Tek walks to start off the 5th inning.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:44 pm

    Small ball anyone?

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • Lugo bunts the bases loaded. Crisp up.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • Holy Jeepus! Crisp triples clearing the bases. 4-3 Sox!!

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Oh my god. A clutch hit with men on. I’m in shock.

    Ayuh - SF July 20, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Pedroia then grounds out to the pitcher.
1 out. Crisp still on third.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • TB up 5-0 on Mussina and the Yanks.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • Papi singles in Crisp. 5-3

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • We get the run. David tries to stretch the single into a double (bad call with his spoeed in my opinion) and is out.
    5-3 Red Sox.

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • Papi out stretching the hit into a double.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Beckett still pitching.
Strikes out Thome to start the inning.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • TB up 9-0 on a Navarro grand slam.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • God bless Coco.

    Atheose - SF July 20, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Timlin up in the pen.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Konerko pops out to third.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Pierzynski singles to left and then is thrown out trying to stretch out the single.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Coco had BETTER win a Gold Glove this year.
Becketts night MUST be over. 10 Ks, man. Nasty

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • Beckett SHOULD be done now.
    6IP 4H 3ER 2BB 10K
    114 pitches.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • Drew pops out to 2nd to start the inning.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Lowell safe on the third baseman’s error.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Lowell on on an Error. Come on Toast!

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Tek and Hinske both fly out. Lowell stranded.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Timlin in to pitch.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • The Tigers are getting manhandled by the Royals. Somehow that makes me feel better about this week.

    Atheose - SF July 20, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • Alight Mike. Listen up. You’ve been cruising in Loss situations the past few outings. But this is one that could be Won. Indeed, we NEED it to be won. It’ll may pull us out of our slump. It’ll put some more, desperately needed, room between us and the HATED Yankees.
    Stay good, Timlin. Stay good.
Of course, it won’t be worth a damn if we don’t aquire a starter in a trade

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • Moving Lester up would also seem like a trade.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Or call up Lester. Tavarez is DONE. Seriously. I love his personality. I really do. I would LOVE him to stay in the bullpen. He’s usually great through two or three. A perfect long man. But OUT of the rotation.
I say this (since I’ve been absent from discussions at this point) trade people to get a starter. Oswalt, someone. I know we want Lester, Buchholz and Ellsbury to be untouchable.. and that’d be nice, but hard. Lester is probably untradable.. teams will WANT him,. but it’d be PR disaster to trade him (I love him and want him to stay for his talent.. but thinking from a politic standpoint.. trading the guy recovering from cancer will quickly be blown out to “Red Sox couldnt wait for Lester to get healthy. Impatient Red Sox. etc etc”).
Once thats done, mopve Tavarez onto the bullpen, keepign Gabbard in the rotation until Schilling is ready. DFA Piniero (or include him in a trade… yeah right) and give Tavarez that spot. This allows you to keep Delcarmen in the bullpen, by tthe way

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 9:20 pm
  • Timlin works a 1-2-3 inning.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • If Delcarmen is sent down, by the way… I will PERSONALLY drive to Yawkey Way, find Theo, and rip his lungs right out of his chest.

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • mike got your message dio. he looked solid for his inning tonite. hopefully okajima shook off last nite and gets a quick eighth.

    sf rod July 20, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • We should call up Lester. I do not think trading him, Buchholz or Ellsbury is a smart move. We also have the chance of getting Clement back in September. Not sure what he would offer at that point, but definately a chance in the bullpen.
I am real hesitant to trade for an NL pitcher. There is to much guessing. I know that Oswalt is a good pitcher, but again pitching in the NL is vastly different to pitching int he AL.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • I really wish that we would hang a few more runs up.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • Why did Cora PH for Papi?

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • Youk now in at 1st, Oki pitching.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • ortiz hurt himself on the slide into second when he was thrown out.

    sf rod July 20, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • Not what I was wanting to hear.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • Oki pitches a quick inning on 10 pitches.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • Ramirez singles to leadoff the 8th.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Drew doubles, Manny held at third.
Drew hitting the ball hard tonight.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:40 pm
  • Lowell walks. Tek up, bases loaded.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • Tek with a sac fly to right. Manny scores, Drew to 3rd.
    6-3 Sox.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • it’s been awhile, i don’t remember what papelbon looks like….
if the sox pick up insurance runs here, i would send okajima back out for the ninth. he threw a handful of pitches in the eighth. he could shake off last nites disappointment. plus he would get the save when jon wouldn’t.

    sf rod July 20, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • Youk HBP, bases loaded again.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • HOLY CRAP!!!!!
    Lugo with the Granny!!!!
    10-3!!!

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • so much for seeing paps tonight

    josh59x July 20, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Lugo with 4 RBIs tonight, Coco with 3. Good on the little guys.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:50 pm
  • Not only a grand slam, but a first pitch, looked belt high.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:50 pm
  • I disagree SF Rod. Oki is too good to let that one homerun drag him down. It didnt even MATTER in the end. And a save is just a stat. Send out Lopez or even Piniero. Save our OKi/Delcarmen/Paps for when you need them

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • RBI Leaders
    Lowell 66
    Papi 59
    Manny 54
    >>>Lugo 47

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Put Piniero out there.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • I’m with you, Dio. Oki’s a big boy, he’s already shown he can come back from giving up a dinger.

    Ayuh - SF July 20, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Contreras finally pulled. Ozzie leaving him out ther becuase the bullpen had been overworked is kind of crappy. You are killing his stats which could hurt his trade value.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • Piniero!!

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • Heck maybe the dinger will make him go another 2 motnhs without a Earned Run liek the last one did!

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • Even with the dinger yesterday he still has allowed only 5ER and his ERA is now 0.95.
    That is just ugly sick.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:02 pm
  • Think about it, 5ER and 2 of those runs came off of homers.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:02 pm
  • Lugo now hitting .225
I say leave the guy in the 9 slot and leave Coco in leadoff.
Game. Finally the offense delivers after a week of crap hitting with RISP.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:04 pm
  • He is truly amazing. Think of this.
Boston Rerd Sox have THREE Rookie of the Year candidates this year: Okajima, Daisuke (perhaps), and Pedroia
We could easily have one in contention NEXT year: Ellsbury
We COULD have had one last year. If it wasnt for the injury and the Red Sox not contending, Papelbon would have been a strong case.

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • Not to be picky, but the final should have been 12-3.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:06 pm
  • Tha Yankees officially give up, removign Jeter from the game and.. hehe.. lettign their PITCHER bat.
    In an American League game
Can we get soem stats on that, pelase?

    Dionysus July 20, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • It is amazing to see that we have 3 potential ROYs. I would have to almost lean to Okajima. He did not have the fanfare of Dice.
But it is hard to have a RP win that I would think.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:08 pm
  • Bruney is showing in the 2 hole now. If the next two innings go 1-2-3 for them then Bruney will not hit.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • This could be the start of something good.

    Hudson July 20, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • July 3rd through the 5th we won 3 straight games. Since then we have not won two games in a row. I hope that this game, Tito getting tossed, Lugo being Roy Hobbs has sparked something and we get back to playing good baseball.
The good news is that NY falls a game back again.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • Papi injury update from ESPN.com
    >>Red Sox slugger David Ortiz left Friday night’s game in Boston against the White Sox with a mild shoulder sprain after an awkward head-first slide into second base during the fifth inning.

    Rob July 20, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • Well, that was much better. Hopefully the bats stay awake for tomorrow…Gabbard looks to continue his newfound? success tomorrow.
If Papi goes down for an extended stint, what do you think Theo pushes for? Another bat? Tex?

    TheFens July 20, 2007, 11:24 pm
  • Good game. Except for the Tim McClelland thing. Ever punch a solid metal piece of factory equipment? Hurts like hell…
Couple things, though. One, Oswalt strained/tore a muscle in his ribcage today and could be DL bound. Not that I think he was ever truly a trade candidate anyway…
Two: Why still so much love for Lester? He’s a nice story and I’m still mostly confident he can be a well-above average starter in the future…but he’s not showing anything to suggest that he’s there yet. A 3.89 AAA ERA is nothing to write home about, and that 3.89 BB/9 is downright ugly. And it’s not like he’s been nigh unhittable… a 6.4 K/9 is pretty mediocre, too. He’s lefthanded and he throws real hard. He’ll be good someday. That day has not yet come. Hell, Hansack’s numbers still blow Lester’s right out of the water.
Some talk lately about whether the A’s might make Joe Blanton available. I wouldn’t want to give up Bowden or Buchholz, as they both have ceilings well above what Joe is capable of…but I would not be averse to dealing Lester, Moss, and someone like Craig Hansen for him. (Even Ellsbury would make some sense, though Moss seems more like a Billy Beane-type player). Blanton’s 26, gets tons of groundballs, and aside from a slight rough patch lately, has been fantastic this season. Granted, his away splits are substantially worse then his home…but a a 4.42 career road ERA ain’t bad. And his FIP has always been very good, especially this year.
Hard to say whether Beane would want to give him up, and even if he did, it might cost Buchholz and then some to get him. But it’s a thought…
PS: Pretty much any deal involving Manny Delcarmen ought to be shot down immediately. How sick is the 7-8-9 combo of him Oki and Papelbon right now? And when/if Donnelly comes back, goodbye Joel Pineiro.

    desturbd1 July 21, 2007, 2:59 am
  • >>>Ever punch a solid metal piece of factory equipment?
Were you imitating Tavarez, or Brown? ;^)

    Hudson July 21, 2007, 5:56 am
  • >>Two: Why still so much love for Lester?
Tavarez early in the season did a good job for us, but now he is having a hard time pitching beyond 4 innings. Even if we do not promote Lester, keep Gabbard in the rotation and put Tavarez back in the pen.
My issue is that I would rather move Lester up than trade one of our three top prospects.

    Anonymous July 21, 2007, 9:16 am
