Play to Live: Sox-Tribe Gamer V

As the Sox face elimination in 2007, their chances for 2008 already got better.  And they didn’t even have to sign anyone, trade dead weight, post a $51M fee.  All they needed to do was to let the new Yankee brass do their thing.  Amen.   Unfortunately, next year is next year, and tonight the Sox face elimination at the hands of a superb baseball club, one with a manager.

Josh Beckett takes the mound trying to lead the Sox back to Boston, while CC Sabathia makes another attempt to pitch more like himself and less like a slightly skinnier version of Bartolo Colon.  One simple message to the Sox’ pitching staff: no more touchdowns allowed.

And as for the puppies? We had them taken care of, all they did was micturate all over our goddamned rug. Comment away.

  • in other news there is a somewhat important baseball game being played tonight. (at least to half of the people on this site!)

  • Right on – forget the puppies. We need a friggin German Shepherd (or several) tonight.

  • That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

    Devine October 18, 2007, 6:34 pm
  • It did. But the dudes abide nonetheless.

    Jackie (SF) October 18, 2007, 6:40 pm
  • Lucky for us, I put a Sox jersey on my Shephard every game we watch together.

    Pete October 18, 2007, 6:40 pm
  • we need german shepards, dobermans, bull mastiffs, Rottweilers and Rhodesian Ridgebacks, they hunt lions for christsakes… bring it back to Boston

    Ed October 18, 2007, 7:02 pm
  • Winds between 30-40 MPH, blowing out towards center all night, possible tornadoes in northern Ohio around midnight.
    This should be interesting.

    LocklandSF October 18, 2007, 7:04 pm
  • Don’t forget the Irish Wolfhounds.

    FenSheaParkway October 18, 2007, 7:21 pm
  • Very good point FSP, they’re formidable as well, why don’t we throw in great danes too, Mike Lowell sort of reminds me of one with his demeanor

    Ed October 18, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Winds blowing out towards center tonight. Great, should provide quite the launching pad for homer runs.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 7:28 pm
  • Not just winds, 40 MPH winds.

    LocklandSF October 18, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • My boy’s got a .700 WPCT (35-15) over the last two years when he wears the jersey.

    Pete October 18, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Wind out to center? I hope the Sox can hit it straight away a little more. Seems like their biggest power threats are a little more to the pull side.
Tornadoes?? Where’s Hideo Nomo when you need him?

    FenSheaParkway October 18, 2007, 7:43 pm
  • ESPN talking heads (Dusty Baker’s) advice to the Indians: “Jump on Beckett early, get him out of there. Also, they need a good game from CC”.
Way to go, Dusty. Want to manage the Yanks?

    SF October 18, 2007, 7:53 pm
  • SF thats a great strategy. Ill offer the sox a strategy if i may too. Beckett should give up no runs and the offense should score lots.

    Sam-YF October 18, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • I emailed Francona and suggested that the Sox “get like a dozen runs early, and then tack on about ten more in the next six or seven innings”.
He emailed back that it was sound thinking.

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • Dusty, will the Rockies ever lose a game again?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:10 pm
  • Boy, the FOX guys are setting up Beckett for massive disappointment, its like he’s the greatest pitcher in the history of baseball to them. Color me worried, what with their almost complete sureness in his pending domination.
I do expect a good deal from CC, though, he’s just not as bad as he has performed this postseason.

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:14 pm
  • Kevin Millar with a pep talk!!!!

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:14 pm
  • what a surprise, Joe Girardi picks the Indians

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:14 pm
  • How about that? Tessie, Millar… will the ghosts of 04 make a reappearance?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • Did he pick them tonight, or in the series? One would be defensible if perhaps a minority position, the other a no-brainer.
Man I hope this guy manages the Yankees and wrecks their young pitching…

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • He picked them tonight, I pray that C.C again reveals himself to be over his head… we MUST deny these fans the home town celebration

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • Joe Buck really looks horrible, perhaps he’s finally realized everything he has in his life is owed to his father

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:27 pm
  • Wow, what an insight on the “Keys to the game”. I’m rooting for the Sox tonight, but only because I don’t want the 10-day layoff between now and WS…there’s not that much baseball left, I want it to last as long as possible….

    yankeemonkey October 18, 2007, 8:29 pm
  • Manny doubles, CC getting smacked around early.
I agree Ed, you would think that this would be a big issue to them.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • christ manny you are slow

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:30 pm

WHY was Manny sent home???? He was out by 20 feet.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 8:30 pm

  • Manny gunned out at home.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 8:31 pm

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Double Play! I’ll take it.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Well at least Hafner ground into a DP and limited the damage to only one run.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • OK, good recovery, run for two outs is a fine trade.

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • Beckett getting hit very easily. This is not looking good.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • Garko looks like Mirabelli’s younger brother

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • Another hit, this one on a hanging curve. Beckett erratic in addition to unlucky, he’s going to need to pitch better or this season has a good chance of ending.

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • I hope Sabathia continues to suck, because this is looking like a high scoring game.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 8:42 pm

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • Good swing Buck? He looked like he was going to keel over! That is a DEFENSIVE swing!

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:43 pm

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • can you say BALL

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • Jeez, not another one of these strike zones. Martinez moved his mitt about 8 inches, clearly, back over the plate to frame that. WTF?

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • Kielty dosen’t have the cache to take that pitch, but it looked in to me too.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • i would be remiss, if i didn’t take this oppertunity to welcome tribe fans back to the “jake”. hard to imagine the indians where struggling to get 24,000 clevelandnites off the couch for the last 5 years.

    sf rod October 18, 2007, 8:50 pm

  • make up call there, yikes

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:51 pm

  • When was Coco’s last really meaningful hit? Been a while…

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • reverse jynx by Buck? no, that would be a strike out… can’t wait to trade this asshole, Ellsbury is indeed the centerfielder for 2008

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Jeezus, Coco. Swing the damn bat. Why couldn’t Ellsbury play, again? Not exactly batting A-Rod 8th, playing Jacoby, right?

    SF October 18, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Lugo looks terrible. Coco looks terrible. The only action in getting on base is Tek getting hit by the ball.
This is shit on a stick.

no sleep til brooklyn SF October 18, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Francona is too much of a player’s manager… won’t give up on Coco eventhough it’s a win win taking a chance with Ellsbury… is Ellsbury going to hit worse than Coco? Is that possible?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • Crisp and Lugo….The wonder twins.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 8:56 pm

    AndrewYF October 18, 2007, 8:57 pm

Another question announcers and play by play men never answer.

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • Sam, it looked like it’d be a long fly ball off his bat, manny’s an idiot, but he just hit the go ahead rbi if you didn’t notice, now Lowell will homer and moot the point

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • The Sox are not going to catch a break. that looked like a homer.
That being said, Manny should be standing on second.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Where’s Deion to douce him again?

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Replays were inconclusive at best. Manny is still an idiot for stopping at first.

    yankeemonkey October 18, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • I don’t think Instant Replay would have called that a HR. The Yellow line is in play, and it looks like it hit the line. Either way, replays don’t offer conclusive proof, so in replay they would have kept the call.

    Carlos YF October 18, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Buck a Yankee Fan, and McCarver a Manny hater, agree with the call, WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT! McCArver is laughing at the CALL

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Ok, deep breath, manny an idiot, should be on second, but he just hit a go ahead rbi, shut up McCarver and Buck

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Ed he should be standing on second. I dont care what it looked like off the bat, thats bad baseball.

    Sam-YF October 18, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • I think Manny thought he was out. Don’t get me wrong – I think he should run out of the box faster even if he thinks it’s out. But I don’t think he was showboating. And now Lowell makes it moot.

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • I guess it doesn’t matter that Manny didn’t make it to second, but jeez, the announcers really gave it to him.

    AndrewYF October 18, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Hey Buck, did Manny’s father get him that swing and world series mvp like your daddy got you your job?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • You’re absolutely right, should’ve been on second, but man the announcers just showed their true colors, fuck them, really… On the lighter side of things, we’re now up

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Ok, we’ve already determined that Manny does some stupid crap sometimes. BUT, the guy is hitting .533 in this series, and is 2-2 tonight. Let’s not go all McCarver here.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:29 pm

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • Announcers must have been lambasted at half time, now kissing Manny’s ass?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • There was a probably some sort of reminder, “um, hey guys, over half the fans tuning in are Boston fans and they kind of LIKE Manny.”

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • ed any announcers would make that point. as much as i hate these clowns i dont think they are biased.

    Sam-YF October 18, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Oh, it isn’t Manny-related entirely? The old-timers have been whining about showboating for. years now. They just lay in wait for situations like this.
McCarver may or may not be recovering from having his brain removed back in 1964.

    Carlos YF October 18, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • Sam, they were borderline screaming, it was over the top… it’s not that they made the point, it’s how they made the point… really really over the top

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • Man Beckett just looked unhittable there, awesome stuff

  • True Ed, i think folks are saying that this isn’t unusual or even pointed in a certain direction. They are all blast all the time. Watch as they shift back and forth pitch by pitch trying to capture “mood.”
Makes you yearn for the Vin Scully “Ball hit hard by Ramirez. CF going back, it appeared to hit the wall. Run scored. Umpires do not call it a HR. Ramirez on first. *pause* should have probably been at second. 2-1 Red Sox in the 3rd.”

    Carlos YF October 18, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Better stuff to the park tonight… oh wait Kielty just hit a blazing single… yeah he’s doing great

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Kielty with a leadoff single. Coco up…..

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 9:38 pm
  • You got it Carlos, couldn’t have said it any better

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:38 pm
  • When Tek hit that I thought “OH GOD ANOTHER DP!” Co Co up first and seond 0 outs. He’ll sacrifice

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • McCarver spends hours pointing out how players do things wrong, thats his shtick. He criticizes many a yankee and just about everyone else.

    Sam-YF October 18, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Buck finally made a good one: “Red Sox pleading for coco to do something at the plate.” Can Crisp fuck up a bunt?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Shit McCarver and I just agreed, FUCK SWING AWAY!

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Sorry, Tek singled, now the black hole.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 9:40 pm
  • McCarver “CoCo will sacrifice” kiss of death, some how he’ll fuck this up

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:40 pm
  • Coco… can’t bunt…

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:41 pm
  • Two bunted foul balls! Wow, I love this team

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:41 pm
  • KoKo Krisp Ks in a Kritikal situation. Please, put Jacoby in.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Fastball in the dirt? What were you swinging at?

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • STRIKE OUT

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Oh, poor CoCo. You are a light-hitting supposedly fundamentally sound player, and you can’t bunt in this situation?
Wow. A K? Is this is reaching A-Rod level?

    Carlos YF October 18, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • LUGO! WOW!

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Ugh.. that was awful to watch as far as PAs go.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • SHIT! LUGO SUCKS

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • Wow, that was all on CoCo not even being able to bunt.

    AndrewYF October 18, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • Lugo and Crisp, thank you Theo for those splendid players, we don’t deserve to win with that crap

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand another GIDP. Amazing.

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • Why are these guys still aloud to step into the batter’s box?

    Pocono Sox October 18, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • I liked AGon at short. Guy was awesome.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • That was the game right there. 2nd inning in game 4, well 4th in game 5. I’m sorry 0 outs, 2 on, AND NO ONE ADVANCES! That’s pathetic. You won’t go to the WS without scoring 1 run in that situation

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • I repeat, how could Ellsbury have done any worse there? Sit Coco, hurt his feelings fine, we should trade his ass this offseason anyways… oh and nice job letting C.C. off the hook, how many DPs can we possibly think we can get away with?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • The great thing about our 8 and 9 hitters is that, in some innings, they don’t even have to bat.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • Honestly, Cora would at least K so Pedrioa could have possibly singled one in. This is painful to watch

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • I have more faith in the batboy. Bottom of the order junk.

    Pocono Sox October 18, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • That was some amazingly horrible batting. Crisp and Lugo are embarassing right now.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:47 pm
  • Do we have any SS in the minors? I don’t want this guy on the team next year. Who’s available? Can we bring someone in? He was terrible all year.

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:47 pm
  • 97mph fastball to Youkilis, bwaha

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • >Honestly, Cora would at least K so Pedrioa could have possibly singled one in.
    That statement is actually true.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • Kris: Jed Lowrie, though he profiles as probably having less than stellar range for SS. (Best-case, he’s DP with more power)

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • Beckett, 1, 2, 3… he’s smoking

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • YIKES Beckett almost killed Youk

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • Meanwhile, Beckett is dealing right now. Awesome stuff.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Does anyone here think Coco is gone this offseason with Ellsbury waiting in the wings?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Myabe A-Rod wants to go back to playing SS… I kid….

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Ed, I think he’s almost certainly gone.
Start thinking about what mid-level prospects the Braves and Padres have that we might be interested in.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 9:50 pm
  • Beckett the last 2 innings: 15 pitches, 13 strikes.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:51 pm
  • Beckett looking good after a shaky first.

    yankeemonkey October 18, 2007, 9:51 pm
  • Happy Birthday! F- soft hands

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Good to see them making CC work this inning.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • gotta keep the pressure on fat man here… can’t let him get out of this that easy

    Ed October 18, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • David? How’s our knee? Bunting hmmmmm

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • maybe papi can bunt. damn i wish he could play centerfield.

    sf rod October 18, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • Beautiful otherway swing

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Papi aimed that single.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Manny is looking for it in right now

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • oh how i hope to see manny walk out of the box with his hands raised right here.

    sf rod October 18, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • > damn i wish he could play centerfield.
    Or right field. or shortstop.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • That’s why he was so pissed

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:56 pm
  • I think thats a SB in my book

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • How awesome would it be if all these retarded towels suddenly spontaneously combusted? They might just be more annoying than those damn thunderstix.

    yankeemonkey October 18, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • watching the reverse shot of Ortiz running was a little funny

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • Sabathia may be over throwing here

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • He won’t see a strike

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • If Manny gets on Lowell will weakly ground out, for some reason that’s why I think. I wisk I could be more optimistic. Here come a slider

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 9:59 pm
  • can anyone answer me this….why on IBB’s do catchers stick their hand out?

    sf rod October 18, 2007, 9:59 pm
  • FB away! Lowell, don’t make me a prophet please

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • Why not just IBB him if you know you won’t throw him anything remotely strike-like?

    yankeemonkey October 18, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • SF ROD – Pitchers like to throw to a target, they throw at the hand, more to s apot.

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • They do so to provide their pitchers with a target. Pitchers tend to look for a spot to hit and so put out the mitt to give a way outside target.

    Carlos YF October 18, 2007, 10:01 pm
  • Really need a hit here…damn that was close

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:02 pm
  • Thought that was fair! SHIT! JUST FOUL!

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:02 pm
  • You never know if a hitter is going to reach. You throw something high and outside, fast. If manny swings at it, its far enough outside that he won’t get great wood on it.
    CC is battling…

    Carlos YF October 18, 2007, 10:03 pm
  • Yep. Sabathia definitely “in control”.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 10:03 pm
  • JD DREW? NOPE COME ON KIELTY!

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:03 pm
  • Bobby freaking Kielty with the bases loaded. I don’t like this.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:03 pm
  • Broken record, guys in scoring position. will they get them in?

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:04 pm
  • to stand straight up in the catchers box and extend your hand, provides a target for the opposing batters box. IBB’s are further out than that. i guess it’s a sybolic target.

    sf rod October 18, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • CC at 90 pitches.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • 2 walks, 2 hit batters, 8 hits
    2 damn runs

    Rob SF October 18, 2007, 10:06 pm
  • too man men left on base tonight… sabathia is asking to be shelled

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • I’m sorry 8 hits, 2 run throw 5 is terrible. leaving more guy on base. Red Sox can’t get the hits. JD Drew would have struck out, at least Kielty put the ball in play

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • Really Rob, it’s 2 walks, 2 HBPs, 7 hits
    1 run.
At least when you consider Youks’ solo HR.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 10:08 pm
  • 11 baserunners in 5 innings and we score 2 runs. This sucks.
Now the local weather has cut in to whine about some stupid tornados. Don’t they know what’s important?

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:08 pm
  • we don’t hit for crap with men in scoring position… not comfortable at all right now

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:09 pm
  • Tom, which local weather? Happening in my area too.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 10:09 pm
  • Can Beckett get threw 5? Why is McCarver talking about the Rock Roll Hall of Fame? Please shoot this guy JOE!

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • Wow Kenny that was a strike, I’m surprised he showded up the ump there

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • What the f?

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • Kenny would get his ass kicked, mayor of cleveland

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • I’m in Memphis. There is a tornado warning about 40 miles away in northern Missippi. I saw there are a bunch of tornado warnings in western Kentucky. Hope those folks are ok, it looks bad up there.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • kenny’s trying to screw with Beckett, that’s all

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • Lofton, Beckett could break you in half. Just run away.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • Kenny Lofton, I thought you were more classy than that. What the f? Beckett yelled “UUUP!” As a former pitcher thats what you yell.

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • Beckett is absolutely filthy.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • Funny how no one talks about how bad it is for baseball that Lofton drops his bat assuming that he had a walk before the ump called it. Another thing I would ding my little leaguers for.

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 10:15 pm
  • Tom- Nashville here. NW Tennessee was up there as well.

    Anonymous October 18, 2007, 10:15 pm

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:15 pm

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • Becketts stuff is the best I think I’ve ever seen it. Looking almost Pedro-esque.
Of course, as I type this, another base hit puts runners ay first and third.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • I’m actually kind of ready, Tom. It hasn’t rained here since ’05.
    Feels that way, anyway.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • What a pitch! Beckett is a BIG GAME PITCHER! You don’t get many of these guys.

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:21 pm
  • WOOO!
    Beckett is baaad tonight.
How about some damn runs to support him?

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:21 pm
  • Quo, I know what you mean. It was so hot and dry this summer that 100 degrees felt like a nice cool day. seriously.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:22 pm
  • bring in gagne

    dc October 18, 2007, 10:22 pm

    Brad October 18, 2007, 10:22 pm
  • How many pitches for Beckett?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:23 pm

“Taste, just as the brewmaster intended it.”
I’m not sure that’s something you brag about.

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 10:23 pm

  • nice of you to stop by dc.

    sf rod October 18, 2007, 10:23 pm

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:24 pm
  • excuse me 1-1 but on base twice

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:24 pm
  • Because, as we all know, it’s not about being good in the big games, it’s about having a awesome career ERA+ above 115. It’s not about winning twenty or having an ERA at around 3. It’s all about VORP>

    Brad October 18, 2007, 10:24 pm
  • man crisp is money

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:25 pm

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:25 pm
  • coco, are you trying? Put in Ellsbury, jesus

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:26 pm
  • a speed guy… gotta get on base first… we should really put in Ellsbury for the home return, i think it’d be a huge morale boost

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:27 pm
  • if there is a home return

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:27 pm
  • Pathetic, really just pathetic

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:28 pm
  • Man! Is it possible to look worse than Lugo did there?

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:29 pm
  • I don’t like this. We’ve pretty much hammered Sabathis, and are clinging to a stupid 2-1 lead. How can we win with half a line up?

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:30 pm
  • Everyone’s hit C.C. solid except for Lugo and Crisp, really really pathetic

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:31 pm
  • McCarver just said 63 pitches through 5 and a third after a stat just said he pitched 72. Yikes

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 10:35 pm
  • whatelse would you expect from McCarver?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 10:36 pm

    Brad October 18, 2007, 10:38 pm

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:56 pm
  • Gagne in for the seventh?

They don’t panic and they don’t lose confidence no matter the situation. It’s a scary situation when you can handle adversity as well as they do and be as gosh darn talented as they are. In addition to have Beckett (who now is the best big game pitcher in the game after this start) and Schilling (another huge big game guy) makes any deficit seem do able. Like I said twice now, this series goes to game #7, what happens who knows, but Beckett and Schilling have ice water in their veins.
Again, this is not a jinx, just admiring the way the Sox handle pressure.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 10:57 pm
  • Trisk, I think the pressure is a little easier to handle when your pitcher is throwing the ball like Beckett has been.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 10:59 pm
  • Trisk, Beckeet seems to be a big game pitcher, Schilling was a big game pitcher, NOW? Not so sure. But Beckett is looking more and more like a big game guy

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 11:00 pm
  • What town is Beckett’s ex from? Did anyone see that? LOL.
True Tom, but this team never believes they are dead. If they could bottle that they would be…wait they already are.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 11:00 pm
  • Trisk, I like your comments too much to think you’re jinxing us… I’ve come to respect your perspective on baseball, what are your thoughts on the Torre situation?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:00 pm
  • >this is not a jinx
Righttt, and you NEVER stepped on the baselinescoming on or off the field, right?

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 11:01 pm
  • JD Drew in Right. Awesome!

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 11:01 pm
  • He’s not “A” big game guy, he is “The” premier big game guy in all of baseball right now.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 11:01 pm
  • Trisk – I agree with you about the way these guys handle pressure – it looks like goofiness or comes off like the Manny quote but they reallky seem oblivious to pressure. Something I am fascinated with since I’m not exactly that way…..

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 11:02 pm
  • Becketts got to make that play, Should be an error

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 11:03 pm
  • Thanks Ed, those comments are the truth. If I had the power to jinx 2004 would have never happened or I would never lose a game I coach, LOL.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 11:04 pm

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 11:04 pm

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 11:04 pm

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:04 pm

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:05 pm

  • what assholes Fox are, 390 foot rbi single, yes we know. ok, it is funny

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:06 pm
  • Gutierrez pops to left center. Two away to Blake.
The Fox guys won’t leave Manny alone on that single off the top of the wall.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:07 pm
  • Yeah that should have been an error on Beckett. I really would have loved him soft tossing Lofton out there on a comebacker.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:07 pm
  • Trisk, what are your thoughts on Torre?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:07 pm
  • Heh John, I respected your position completely. I just think the new bosses are pricks, just like their dad. And Levine.. feh.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:08 pm
  • Ed, they’re stupid. Manny wasn’t hustling because the ball was a homerun. I can’t handle either of them.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:09 pm
  • Gotta go with Beckett, any trouble put in Paps

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:09 pm
  • Wow. 10k’s in a must win game. Through seven. It’s really a shame that Hanley isn’t in this game to put up the same numbers and help his team stay alive by pitching an awesome with his awesome VORP and outstanding ranking as the second most valuable player in baseball.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:10 pm
  • Oh, and John, I’m not feeling any better. :)

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:10 pm
  • how many pitches does Beckett have? P.S. If C.C. wins the Cy young, do you think he’ll look at it with some anger given this post season of his thus far?

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:10 pm
  • Ed I don’t want to disrespect this thread with my thoughts on Torre, but the short version I am not sad.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 11:11 pm
  • Beckett = veins full of icewater

    Pocono Sox October 18, 2007, 11:11 pm
  • edit: pitching an awesome game.. which is funny because he’s not an ace, like Beckett.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:11 pm
  • As great as Hanley is, you can’t do any better than a big game pitcher like this, they’re too far and few in between

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:11 pm
  • Quo, if you are still with us, there is a tornado warning around 75 – 100 miles west of Nashville. I can’t believe these storms are almost there already, but you are going to get some bad weather in another hour or so.

AG I am sorry to hear that.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 11:12 pm
  • Trisk…
I was just getting ready to ask how you felt, but then I remembered all of the things you’ve written over the past year, and I didn’t see the point…
    :)

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:12 pm
  • > If C.C. wins the Cy young, do you think he’ll look at it with some anger given this post season of his thus far?
No, but plenty of Beckett boosters will.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • OK, Yanks fans, I know this isn’t exactly a representative sample but how many of you are cheering against the indians since they bounced you fromthe postseasonand how many are cheering against the sox just for history’s sake? Two YFs at work were arguing this and each declared teh other wasn’t a real YF. Mind you this is all taking place in CA so who knows.

    rootbeerfloat October 18, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • Indeed, AG.
I can’t help it. It’s just too good. It’s middle in fastball that I can’t lay off of.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • Yeah Brad I am not losing sleep :)
Hope married life is treating you well!

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 11:14 pm
  • McCarver thinks Beckett will win the Cy Young!!! and Buck??? Wow

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:14 pm
  • Later John. Thanks, I’ll get over it. I just hope I am wrong.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:14 pm
  • McCarver and Bck think Beckett will win the Cy Young. Too bad the votes are in already and Sabathia will probably win. JD just strike out already

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 11:14 pm
  • How bad, Tom? Like, bracing the walls bad, or “don’t even consider going outside for like two hours” bad?

    QuoSF October 18, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • Drew, Crisp, Lugo… the all stars come out to play… Buck and McCarver and Rosenthal finally bringing up Ellsbury… finally a smart comment

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • I can’t say I am rooting for anyone except for Paul Byrd to get shelled for 20 runs everytime he takes the mound from this day forward. Anytime it’s not the Yankees, I don’t care who wins.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 18, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • I picked the Tribe to win it ll before the season began, so I’m sticking with it. It’s not any sort of greater antipathy that I bear towards the Sox; I hate Cleveland.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:16 pm
  • This is exactly why the season awards should have post-season inclusions. Not that Beckett isn’t going to win it anyhow, because he is, but his past two games only prove it more clearly to guys who say he’s too inconsistent or an “average” guy to have around.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:16 pm
  • Buck: “…get some help for the heart of this Boston lineup.” Funny, I didn’t know the heart was at the bottom.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 11:16 pm
  • Another full count for Drew, lead off walk… here comes a gaurunteed Double Play from Lugo or Crisp (Can you feel the reverse jynx)

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:17 pm
  • Trisk, all is awesome. I’ll email you tomorrow with some pics from the party. It was great.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:17 pm
  • Excellent Brad, sounds great.

  • coco tried his best there to give him that dp

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:19 pm

As soon as he fielded it he looked uncomfortable going there.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:19 pm
  • i’d do the double steal right here

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:20 pm
  • Don’t worry Lugo will end it, he’ll get the job done that CoCo couldn’t

    Kris SF October 18, 2007, 11:21 pm
  • Wow. Lugo finally doesn SOMETHING worth hitting the keyboard over…
    ha.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:22 pm
  • Quo, it’s a huge line of storms going from Louisville to central Mississipi moving at at least 70 mph. There is a bad cell with a tornado warning heading due east for Nashville. Hopefully it will rain itself out before it gets there.
I don’t know how long you’ve lived in Nashville, but there was a tornado there around 10 years ago that killed 1 person, a ROTC student at Vanderbuilt. He was the son of a friend of mine, an incredible kid.

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:25 pm
  • Ed, it looks like storms all over Indians and Kentucky is getting absolutely hammered. KY has had at least a dozen tornado warnings tonight.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 11:25 pm
  • i’m not rooting either way…i don’t have a horse in the race, as the saying goes…i just like being right…the sox own the indians right now…the end

    dc October 18, 2007, 11:26 pm
  • Yeah, I call those “Jeter hits”, Kris. Those little infield bleeders that seem to slow to the point of bunt speed before the opposing player gives up on throwing the guy out. Derek hits. No offense intended for the upcoming, Trisk, whom I’m sure will be a superstar. :)

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:26 pm
  • Buck jynxs Mastny

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:26 pm

I’ve been here 13 years, though I don’t think I remember hearing about that tornado. Again, my condolences.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 11:26 pm
  • I think Beckett comes back out for this game, and if it’s quick, is available out of the pen for game seven.

    Brad October 18, 2007, 11:27 pm
  • Hope you all in the midwest stay safe

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:28 pm

Yeah, that vaunted Tribe pen is falling apart right now.

    attackgerbil October 18, 2007, 11:28 pm
  • It’s just one game Tom, we need to get it back to Boston, then we’ll see what happens

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:29 pm
  • Though the Indians should be concerned about Perez, Sox have owned him this entire season… Mastny was never so great hence his extra innings heroics, as he walks in a run

    Ed October 18, 2007, 11:30 pm
  • True, momentum lasts as long as the next starter.

    Tom sf October 18, 2007, 11:30 pm
