Playing for the Right to Get Swept: Tigers-Twins Tiebreaker Gamer

Yep, that's right. Today's winner is the 1998 Padres. Dead men walking. Toast. History. Footnote. Whatever the term, that's what they are.

So enjoy the champagne, whichever team earns the right to play another few days – it's the last you'll taste this year because of what happens on the diamond.

Comment here about all the action.

I don’t think you have the reverse jinx power SF…I guess we’ll see. If it does work though, I coming to find you…
;)

Can we get a “like” button for comments like they have on facebook?
I like this comment. Thanks, SF!

that’s why we play the games on turf and not paper…personally, i’m rooting for the twinkies…their story is more compelling to me, and i still have an affinity for some of the players i saw in new britain, when i lived in central ct…mauer, cuddyer, morneau…a lot of the guys i saw there are scattered around the majors now because of the financial realities of today’s game, but it’s cool to have seen these guys coming up…

I don’t care who wins, only that the game goes 20 plus innings. Either team would give the Yankees fits in some way or another. For the first time in many years I am just happy the Yankees are back in the dance and have a shot at winning it all. Missing the playoffs for one season will bring that appreciation back in no time!

some of us have warmed krueg, others are tolerating him better…not sure which one i am yet, but he does seem to have worked harder at staying out of the negative spotlight, and being a better teammate…once he got past the shame of being on “the list”, and his hip surgery, we haven’t heard much about his fixation with being the center of attention…no more of those creepy mirror pictures…he even traded in madonna for kate hudson…smart move if you ask me…i think a lot has to do with the overall success of the team…he seems to be over that feeling of having to be the big cheese on a team that has so many offensive weapons…it’ll be interesting to see how all of the yankees cope with being the favorite, particularly if they run into a buzz saw pitching performance…

I was one of the haters DC, but I think when he re-signed I figured we need him to win so why not support the guy?

I know this is meant to be grateful and display your well-adjusted perspective on things, but do you realize how spoiled this makes you sound!?
;-)

Quite the opposite was intended. I consider myself very lucky that I am a Yankees fan and a Yankees fan during a very good time to be a Yankees fan. I am 34, so I had previously endured (prior to 1996) some not so good times, but I am certainly aware that there are Yankees fans (and baseball fans of course) who had to endure far longer stretches of a playoff layoff. If it sounds “spoiled” so be it, but honestly not seeing the Yankees in October last year really hammered home the fact that it is not a given, rather something to appreciate and enjoy. It even helped in the regular season. Not making the playoffs really made me enjoy the season more in hopes that they could get back to the playoffs in ’09. Cheese maybe, but it’s honest and true. Baseball was enjoyable this season and whether it be one year or 100, we all know how that layoff feels.

on a related note – Molina is going to catch Burnett – Posada can’t be happy about that!

gotta pull for the twins here. i think the artificial turf could play a factor in the yankees series.

“on a related note – Molina is going to catch Burnett – Posada can’t be happy about that!”
Hip Hip is going to have to get over it…it’s about #27, not his bruised ego.

posada came off pretty bitter about the whole thing….. “I just hope we win that game. That’s all. That’s all I’ve got to say.”

Yanks officially choose the longer series. I’m soooooo surprised.
So the winner of this game heads straight to New York for tomorrow night’s contest.

What’s up with the camera-work on this game on mlb.tv? They are only using the outfield camera, not switching to any others. Wtf.

Nevermind, just noticed I get to choose what camera to watch.
Porcello falling apart here, throws the ball away. 3-1 Tigres.

Yeah, Ath, I don’t understand – you can select any camera (cool) but I couldn’t find a straight produced broadcast of the game replete with replays (not cool).

By the way, game’s on TBS (work now has it on..) sounds like I don’t want MLB.TV for the post season.. 10$ saved for now!

Porcello gives up a walk and is quickly pulled. Pretty dominant outing, despite the two runs.

getting dicey.
twins announcer promises a “scoreboard update” coming up between innings. what scoreboard?

Not clutch on their part, but Tigers had an awful bullpen recently, beginning with Rodney, so let’s get something going on! Do I hear a 15 inning game?

It’s funny seeing the outline of giant letters spelling “VIKINGS” down the first-base line.

Would you pitch Nathan in a 6 out save? It might clinch the game, but he might not be available for awhile..

OH FUCK, Twins take the lead. I really wanted the Tigers to win, but shit, I’d be lying if I said I’m not happy to see Orlando Cabrera hitting the go-ahead homer.

Lar, I say no–Nathan only for 3 outs. Nathan has gone 4 outs twice, and 6 outs just once.

Seems fair and safe. I don’t know Twins bullpen to know who their 8th inning guy is. Home court adventage indeed.
Here’s Tu-Te Ni, who I’ve never heard of before just now.

…Twins take the lead. I really wanted the Tigers to win, but shit, I’d be lying if I said I’m not happy to see Orlando Cabrera hitting the go-ahead homer…
Atheose, couldn’t have said it better myself

Clark, OCab could break into my apartment, drink my beer, eat my steak and sleep with my girlfriend, and I would still shake his hand and offer him seconds.

Haha, Atheose, indeed. I think it would go something like “Orlando, how do you like your steak?”

0i like Posada but I don’t like some of his public commentary. I didn’t like him saying publically how badly the Yanks needed a real ace when wang was leading their rotation and I don’t like his comment re: Molina’s start. Sure losing Posada’s bat (or Matsui’s if Posada DH’s) hurts, but the Yankees have a backup catcher who could start on many teams and if this is what they need to give their #2 starter confidence in October, so be it. Work on the aj-jorge chemistry in 2010.

Nathan in for a 5-out save, something he hasn’t done since June 17, 2004.
Wrong thread IH? Or did that just come out of nowhere?

Sorry Ath – there was a comment on this thread hours ago re: Posada’s comment (4:56) and I was just late to the party.
Tie game. Let there be extras. Hours and hours of extras.

My bad IH, I skipped most of the beginning of the thread.
I’m a little surprised at the venom from Posada. I mean he’ll probably be DH’ing that game, right? So it’s not as if he’ll be on the bench.

The Tigers putting on a clinic on how to squander scoring opportunities. Nathan with the double fist-pump.
Twins gunna win it in dramatic fashion.

Double play…poor baserunning. You mean sh*t it’s the runner on third…Twins win here put it in the books.

Also, for what it’s worth, if there was ever a time for a double fist-pump that was it.

Double play enabled by the ump: that third strike to Polanco was a total joke of a call.
Somehow I think Nathan crumbles against the Yanks, if they even get to a save situation.

I’ve heard the broadcasters say “Rodney has only blown one save all year” about 10 times now.
That’s such amazing jinxing that I’m convinced Rodney is going to give up the game here.

It’s funny seeing the Yankees fans rooting for the game to go on as long as possible. Can’t say I blame you.
Jesus, what a play to save the season by Inge. Mauer IBB’d.

amen, john…we have been lucky the past 15 years or so…despite the lack of “wins” since 2000, we’ve still been a “contenda”…i’m a “little” older than you, so i remember when the yanks went through their really stinky period…as a kid it was a bummer to see the once proud franchise becoming such bottom feeders, and i took a beating for it…but i feel blessed because i know overall we’ve had good fortune…mr. steinbrenner is my hero…they can say what they want about him, but he didn’t invent the rules, yet he plays by the rules…i’m glad he cared more about winning than the bottom line…can’t imagine what it would be like to go through your entire life without your team winning at least 1 championship…i’m extra blessed because i’ve never had a favorite team in any sport that didn’t win at least one…not winning is humbling to say the least…

Tie game, winning run 90 feet away.
$50 says Rodney throws a wild pitch to end the game.

HOLY SMOKES what a play – in the same inning that he misplayed a single to a triple! Huge!!! October baseball!!!!! That was very very very cool.

THIS GAME IS F-CKING AWESOME!!!!
I cannot imagine what the respective fan bases must be feeling right now…not to mention, after all this, we are going to f-cking destroy them.

What the hell, what’s up with the reverse krueg? What happened to all the negativity?
I just got back home from work to watch the bottom of the inning, after leaving 4-3 8th inning. Wow.
This is almost as greedy as a Yanks fan can hope.

Rayburn is secretly being paid by the Steinbrenners to keep the game going as long as possible. Hence letting the game-tying run get to third, and then gunning down the winning run afterwards.

I called 20 innings this morning…almost there. Sorry to ask again but how long is flight from Minn to NY?

…and as I say that, they double. Runners at 2nd and 3rd.
The mere mention of Carl Pavano’s name is powerful enough to destroy a team’s season.

John, I think the flight is between 3 and 4 hours. It’s not longer than 4 I’m pretty sure.

K’s on ball 4! Was that a sinker or a split finger? Whatever it was, it looked like it was intended to get him chasing, which would be a gutsy pitch to throw on 3-2 with the bases loaded and season on the line.
The only way this could have gone better for NY would be if Verlander had started.

You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me
Rodney? Still out there?
Leyland clearly wants Rodney’s arm to fall off

Rodney has pitched 2.0 innings three times this season. Has never gone more than that in his career.

Ach, maybe the outcome of this game helps the Yankees (though the Rockies did awfully well after an extra-innings win in game 163). But who cares, that was just a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Was at a Cambridge bar with the place clearly cheering for the Tigers. So fun when SFs are disappointed! Hopefully the first of many over the next week!
