PNC Parked: Home Run Derby Open Thread

We’re back from Itay (full post-mortem, including pics of the wonderful madness, tomorrow), and getting ready to catch the Home Run Derby, if we can stay awake.  If anyone feels inclined, use this as a thread to discuss this totally one-dimensional contest.  And of course, go Big Papi!!!

  • the BP derby is on…and I will be at buffalo wild wings with the boys….it’s like the dunk contest, it doesn’t matter, but you wanna watch the freaks throw down ya know ;)

  • Papi is out in the second. Hit 10 (second-most) in the first, only three in the second… Ah well… You could tell he was tired… 19 innings. Man. The sad thing is that he of all of them will get no break — 19 innings Sunday, home run derby Monday, All-Star Game Tuesday, one off day Wednesday. But I suppose Sunday and Monday will be lss grueling than nine inning games each day, so it’ll probably be recuperative to some extent…

  • And he might actually have to play the field. Oh, the torture! 19 innings of DH should not be a strain on a professional athlete.

  • Um, except that it is, Nate. Clue, please. That’s just as inane as saying it shopuldn’t be a strain for the pitcher. As such, it shouldn’t be a strain for the first baseman either, I suppose, since he rarely runs. Or the outfielders, who can jog and catch the ball on most plays — if they even have to move at all in most innings.
Baseball is an exhausting sport for everyone, DHes included, and you could see it on their faces Sunday.

  • So you’re trying to argue Ortiz was just as tired as guys like Dye/Trot and AJ/Tek? I’m not buying it. He sits in the dugout while they’re out in the sun in 15 min intervals 19 times. I’ll give you mental exhaustion if you insist.

  • Nate:
It’s absurd to argue that Ortiz wasn’t taxed by playing a 19 inning game. He was. He wasn’t nearly as taxed as the guys you cite, so in that you are correct. But to state that being involved in a 19 inning game shouldn’t be a strain at all, even on a DH, is silly.
Let’s put it this way: is sitting on a 3 hour flight the same as sitting on a 7 hour flight? I mean, all you’re doing is just sitting down for four more hours, right?

  • SF, are you suggesting that Ortiz’s season is like a series of 4 hour flights, complete with the phony flight attendants, the bad food, and the miniscule leg room? Poor guy!

  • Dude, if Papi’s flying Alitalia then the whole dugout smells like fish, and when they say they gave you a dugout exit row seat with more leg room they actually mean they gave you the seat three rows behind the exit row with no leg room, so Big Papi got some cramped legs in that condensed Wrigley dugout.
(Really, who the fuck serves STINKY GODDAMNED FISH ON AN 8 HOUR PLANE FLIGHT?!?!?)
