Put Up or Shut Up: Tigers-Yanks ALDS Gamer I

Men: This would be a good moment to quote from a familiar military hero.

Our basic plan of operation is to advance and to keep on advancing regardless of whether we have to go over, under, or through the enemy. We are going to go through him like crap through a goose; like shit through a tin horn!

There is one great thing that you men will all be able to say after this war is the playoffs are over and you are home once again. You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in the great World War II that series against Detroit, you WON’T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, ‘Well, your Granddaddy shoveled shit in Louisiana.’ No, Sir, you can look him straight in the eye and say, ‘Son, your Granddaddy rode with the Great Third Army New York Yankees and a Son-of-a-Goddamned-Bitch named Georgie Patton Steinbrenner!

Amen. Now have at it. Lineups after the jump.

  • Bad news for the Mets: El Duque might miss his start with a strained muscle. We don’t like the Mets one bit, but watching Pedro and the Duke is something we can’t help but enjoy. Sorry to see them not have a shot.

  • For some reason, in this day and age, I am not finding “sports-as-war” metaphors all that interesting.

    SF October 3, 2006, 8:08 pm
  • Funny bone, SF!
PS: What’s up with Jeannie Zalasco’s red pirate shirt? Wardrobe!

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • LET’S-GO-YANK-EES!!!!!!!!!!!
Here’s to hoping for some powerful, crisp, solid Bomber baseball. I’ll check in here and there, I’m too much of a nervous nutcase during play-off baseball to comment regularly. Keep the thread pumping AG!

    bloodyank78 October 3, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • Funny bones react to things that are…funny, YF.

    SF October 3, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • Sorry, BY, wish I could. I am watching the pre-game and then I turn it over to the Tivo. Hopefully, I will be back before the end of the game, but I will likely not be. Arrgh. Oh well.
    Let’s Go Yan-kees!

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • Buck and McCarver….earmuffs!
Actually, we don’t mind Buck so much, and we can even live with McC.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • On the upside, I can FF/mute every time McCarver talks.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:16 pm
  • You know what WOULD be funny? The looks on every Yankee fan I pass tomorrow morning should the Tigers take this contest.

    SF October 3, 2006, 8:16 pm
  • Emmitt Smith just rocked the HOUSE on Dancing with the Stars. You guys are missing some serious action over there.

    SF October 3, 2006, 8:20 pm
  • And we’re off! Playoff baseball!!! A high swinging strike!
    Get it down C-M.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • Where was that 0-2? Looked good.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • Granderson comes out swinging…..and flies to Matsui in left.
C-M getting the ball up. Dangerous. Or was that the plan against Granderson?

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • One away on the pop to Matsui.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • 0-2 looked outside to me Gerb.
Pitch one down to Polanco. Good sign. And pitch 2 is also down, and for a strike. 1-1.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • And there’s our first ground out.

    Anonymous October 3, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • Nice comebacker for the second out. Repeat that 25 more times.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • Casey down 4-3. Piece of cake first for Wang, 1-2-3. Good sign.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:25 pm
  • Another grounder from Casey. I like. Cmon, boys. Knock Robertson up early.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:25 pm
  • Joe Buck is already making me ill.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • Damon grounds out to Polanco for the first out.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • MVP! Jeter singles.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:29 pm
  • Captain, my Captain. Single to left.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:29 pm
  • Abreu takes high ball one, then a strike. The 1-1 is hit hard to the right side at Casey. Easy out at second, not enough time to get to first. Two away.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • Sheff works the count to 3-1; he’s underneath it. Just foul out of play off third. That took a long time to come down. The payoff: fly out to dead center. No score after one.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:34 pm
  • Man. Not sure about Sheff in the 4 slot. That fly out was right down the middle.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:34 pm
  • Wish I had left before seeing that double to Magglio. I’m off to “class”, YF. Wish me luck. Back in 2H.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • Beautiful play to get Ordonez at third as IRod fails to make contact on the hnr.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • Brutal strike three on IRod. That sinker was just sick.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:44 pm
  • Monroe grounds out 6-3 to end the threat. Nice. Okay, now I am out. See you all later.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • Well, McCarver had Leyland pegged. Credit there. Bad move.
Wang escapes trouble, Leyland has only himself to blame.
    1 point Torre.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • Tigers get a leadoff double for the second inning in a row, this time from Thames.

    YF October 3, 2006, 8:59 pm
  • Inge grounds out. Granderson singles to right. Thames held. Questionable decision.
    Double-play potential here.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • BINGO! Beautifully done.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • …where’s quo and paul, watchin’ gilmore girls?…

    dc October 3, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • JD nubbs one past Robertson! Leadoff runner on for the first time. Let’s go DJ!

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:09 pm
  • Jeter!!!! Double to left center gets through the hole vacated by Guillen, covering second with Damon running. 2nd and 3rd, no outs.
    Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:13 pm
  • ABREEUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!! Long double into right center.
2-0. Man on 2nd, none out!
Top of the order doing damage.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:14 pm
  • The hits keep coming! Sheff takes one inside out to right center for a single. Abreu scores! 3-0.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:15 pm
  • I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    bloodyank78 October 3, 2006, 9:15 pm
  • Tigers must be deflated now. They had opportunities, did not cash in, and now they’re down.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • (Ok the Master Sheff was really lame)
oh boy was it a beaut of a hit or what?

    bloodyank78 October 3, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • GIAMBI!!!!!! 5-0. Over the wall in right.
    Yankees making a statement here.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:20 pm
  • Coming as advertised. =)

    bloodyank78 October 3, 2006, 9:20 pm
  • Alex with a hit to left. That’s six in a row if you’re counting.
Does Leyland have anyone in his pen? Hello!!

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:21 pm
  • Grilli up for Detroit. But a little late.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • Where’s SF?

    bloodyank78 October 3, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • Robertson leaves another one high in the zone, Matsui goes deep to left center. Posada salavating here?

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • SF is home crying.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:23 pm
  • Jeez. Ordonez with the nice catch on the Posada 3-0 fly. Feh.
Okay Robi. Time to knock out Robinson.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • Make that Robertson.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • Wang cruises through the 4th, ringing up Pudge for the second time after a 2-out double by Guillen.
Where are the Wang doubters now, exactly?

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:37 pm
  • …they’re watchin’ gilmore girls…with quo, Paul sf, and sf rod…

    dc October 3, 2006, 9:41 pm
  • Jeter with another hit, a one out single to the right. Then he’s caihjy in the botched hit-and-run.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:42 pm
  • And the 4th ends with a fly to left.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • Have the Yanks lost their sense of urgency? This game feels over, but there’s a lot of time left, and they’ve blown some awfullly big leads this year. Not a time to become complacent.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • Our fears realized: Craig Monroe dinger. 5-1.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:46 pm
  • Nice response. Thames down 6-3.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:48 pm
  • Inge singles to right. Ball getting up on Wang. Getting tagged.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • Granderson flies out. Again. 2 down.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:50 pm
  • ARGGGGG! Polanco hits the line in right field for a double. Inge scores. 5-2. Another fly ball. Dang.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • Casey singles into the left field gap. 5-2.
    Stop the bleeding!

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Bruney up.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:55 pm
  • Classic Wang K of Ordonez to get out of further trouble: sinker low inside.

    YF October 3, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • And Wang works through the 6th after the Yanks go down in the bottom of the 5th.
Time to put this one away.

    YF October 3, 2006, 10:16 pm
  • That’s what were talkin’ about. 7-3.

    YF October 3, 2006, 10:27 pm
  • yf, looks like it’s just me and you buddy…must be a gilmore girls marathon…

    dc October 3, 2006, 10:27 pm
  • Granderson takes the Myers hanger into the rf bleachers. Ooof.

    YF October 3, 2006, 10:40 pm
  • Joe, Joe, what are you thinking??? Taking Wang out with 2 out in the 7th. Myers hasn’t been able to get ANYONE out lately!

    Dampfi October 3, 2006, 10:41 pm
  • Proctologist in. And well rested.

    YF October 3, 2006, 10:41 pm
  • Gah. Polanco singles to right center.

    YF October 3, 2006, 10:42 pm
  • Casey single. Detroit not going quietly.

    YF October 3, 2006, 10:45 pm
  • And….Game. 8-4. Farns takes the 8th, Mo the 9th, 1 base runner each. No danger.
    Derek: 5 for 5.
    Sleep well.

    YF October 3, 2006, 11:36 pm
  • Wow. Good job to the Yankees, even if I hoped for better from the TIgers. dc, you’d better get that Gilmore Girls addiction checked out. I remember the last time one person made that many references to it. It was two weeks ago….never.
Have to agree with anyone who wasn’t sure why Torre pulled his Wang at that point in the game. Despite the three runs he looked pretty strong out there. Make a start on short rest more feasible/easier?

    Quo October 4, 2006, 2:58 am
  • …i like the g girls, and if the sox were in, i’d be watching them…

    dc October 4, 2006, 8:38 am
  • quo, its because he didnt want wang to blow out all his pitches
i think the past 4 outings, he hasnt pitched more than 80 something pitches, so he wants to take it easy for them and slowly/gradually get up to 100 pitches during the postseason
