Reasonable Expectations: Tribe-Yanks Gamer III

The Bombers go for the sweep against Cleveland in an afternoon start today, a final warmup for this weekend’s affair in Boston. Darrell Rasner pitches for the Yanks; the super-torrid Alex Rodriguez will look to continue his season-long assault against Fausto Carmona. Carmona stymied the Yanks in spring training—he throws a hard sinking fastball—but has had trouble since. Hope that continues today. Comment here on the action….

  • Last night, I could only watch about two innings of the game, but it was enough to see ARod bend the laws of physics.
I’m doing a job out of town with no access to the game. I’m *this* close to forking over for an XM. Any comments on satellite radio?

  • AG – don’t do it! You think it’s worth it, but in the end, unless you are a (car) traveling salesman, it’s not worth it.
I have the audio package, on MLB, if you’d like to chime in on that.. not sure if you don’t have access to that either.
Either way, stay away from XM!

    Brad April 19, 2007, 1:06 pm
  • Thanks, Brad.
I did MLB audio for the last two seasons, but this year I didn’t do it.

JD leads off with a walk for NY.

  • Jeter hits into the FC.
Carmona has a white bar of some kind underneath the brim of his hat. He’s going to it with his left thumb before every pitch. WTF??

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:25 pm
  • Kay noticed it also. Is it tape? Some kind of sticky substance???
    HE’S CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:25 pm
  • Abreu dribbles one through the right side. 2 on for alex.
what’s up with the strip, fausto!!?!?

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:26 pm
  • Alex ks on a tailing fastball inside.

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:29 pm
  • Giambi hits into the shift.
What’s the strip?! Could it just be a label? Or is it 2x-sided tape?
    Very very suspicious!

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:32 pm
  • Shouldn’t the Yanks say something to the umps about it if it’s that obvious?

    yankeemonkey April 19, 2007, 1:33 pm
  • Wow, the Yanks don’t score for ONE inning and everyone assumes the other guy is cheating.
    What arrogance…

    SF April 19, 2007, 1:36 pm
  • Kay tells us Wil Nieves is 0 for the last 2 years, but don’t worry—”Nice guy. Real hard worker.”
    Hope he’s renting.
Didn’t see if Carmona was still sporting that label strip of tack under his cap….

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:52 pm
  • sf: “everyone” appears to be just me. also, i questioned the trip before the yankees hadn’t scored. in fact, with men on and a-rod up, it looked like they were going to….anyway…..if we haven’t scored by now….IT MUST BE ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:54 pm
  • Yeah, it’s lonely over here. Guess you YFs (mostly) have jobs. Unlike us SFs…

    SF April 19, 2007, 1:57 pm
  • Damon single over second.
It’s gonna get lonelier over here in a few minutes….

    YF April 19, 2007, 1:59 pm
  • Damon with an easy sb.

    YF April 19, 2007, 2:00 pm
  • Jeter flies to right, Damon to 3rd with one out. RBI for Abreu, if he can just cash it.
    Infield in for the Tribe.

    YF April 19, 2007, 2:01 pm
  • Even though we’ve been crushing the ball (and led mostly by ARod) it’s nice to see that the Yanks are playing small ball early!

    Lar April 19, 2007, 2:03 pm
  • Abreu swngs over a split at 2-0, then drills one through the infield for the rbi. 1-0. That’s a single with the infield forward or back.
    Alex with a man on!

    YF April 19, 2007, 2:03 pm
  • Alex ks looking with abreu stealing. Perhaps distracted alex. not sure i understand why he’s running there.
alex now 0-5 w/ 5ks versus carmona. yeesh.

    YF April 19, 2007, 2:05 pm
  • hey, i have a job…but i’ll try to help hold it down here at great risk to my livelihood. is that how you spell livelihood? fausto carmona sounds like the name of kaiser souze’s little brother.

    tom yf April 19, 2007, 2:07 pm
  • giambi flies to shallow left. end of inning. 1-0.

    YF April 19, 2007, 2:08 pm
  • I have the XM and like it. It’s good when you’re in the car.
    A couple of negatives:
-You lose the signal next to buildings (such as when I’m at a drive-up window) and in tunnels.
-Hometeam broadcast only. (Which could be good for you in that you don’t have to listen to Sterling and Susyn for 81 games. BUT, even those two aren’t as bad as Tampa’s broadcast team.
Otherwise, there are lots of other channels, good music selections, etc. And if the FCC approves the merger with Sirious, it could get better.
    I say do it.

    Lar April 19, 2007, 2:24 pm
  • Hooray!

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 2:24 pm
  • Wow, the kid’s got moxie!

    yankeemonkey April 19, 2007, 2:25 pm
  • Struck Peralta out with the bases loaded. End of 3 and half, the score is tied at 1-1. Carmona with 63 pitches through 3, Rasner with 76 pitches through 4, with something like 32 in this inning.
Give the Indians credit though, they fought off a lot of pitches, and seen a lot of pitches, and worked for this run..

    Lar April 19, 2007, 2:26 pm
  • what IS moxie? i want moxie. tied at 1?

    tom yf April 19, 2007, 2:27 pm
  • Looks like the rested bullpen will get a nice workout today. It’s a good sign (for the bullpen) that I’m looking forward to them coming in.

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 2:28 pm
  • Andrew – ya, if we didn’t have a big series coming up.. would be nice if he ate up some innings, or if the Yanks can score say, hmm, 9 runs this inning to give him a nice cushion! ;)

    Lar April 19, 2007, 2:32 pm
  • Hooray, Melky finally over the Mendoza line!!!!

    yankeemonkey April 19, 2007, 2:34 pm
  • Eik, Rasner goes 4.1 innings. Bullpen gets to hold a 1-1 tie for 4.2 innings. But with the depth and quality this bullpen suddenly seems to have (sans Far-and-Gonesworth) I’m not worried at all. Look for Bruney to pitch 1, then Proctor, Vizcaino and Mo (if they have a lead).

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 2:39 pm
  • Myers pitching today.. will he be available for a key Ortiz moment tomorrow?

    Lar April 19, 2007, 2:41 pm
  • Of course he will, he pitches 70mph fastballs. He could pitch every day and it wouldn’t bother him at all. Actually, I think he said he likes doing that.

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 2:45 pm
  • Phew.

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 3:11 pm
  • Giambi! He is totally out of his slump. Even better for an on-fire A-Rod.

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 3:17 pm
  • Went to lunch – looks like it’s just you and me, eh, Andrew? =)
    Gooo Yankees!

    Lar April 19, 2007, 3:23 pm
  • Carmona not pitching that badly though.. hopefully we’ll get the bullpen..

    Lar April 19, 2007, 3:28 pm
  • Argh, there goes the bullpen dominance.

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 3:31 pm
  • Vizcaino not looking good out there.. 2nd and 3rd nobody out..

    Lar April 19, 2007, 3:33 pm
  • Captcha is slowing me down, tie game, first and 3rd, 1 out, double play setup for Vizcaino against VMart.

    Lar April 19, 2007, 3:34 pm
  • Well, that was certainly not clutch. This kind of mirrors the Red Sox game.. but maybe the Yanks make a comeback..

    Lar April 19, 2007, 3:36 pm
  • the sox game ends in dramatic fashion, while the yanks game starts to unravel. let the trolling on this thread begin.

    sf rod April 19, 2007, 3:38 pm
  • Lets not, sf rod. I don’t support trolling. If we want to mock Yankees lets do it in OUR thread.

    Dionysus April 19, 2007, 3:39 pm
  • It’s all in good fun. I still got hope! =)

    Lar April 19, 2007, 3:41 pm
  • im not one to participate in such things dionysus. if you remember sox fans stayed clear of trolling after the mo meltdown in oakland. respect is respect. tomorrow will be fun.

    sf rod April 19, 2007, 3:42 pm
  • Where’s Jim? Doesn’t he root for his own team in his own team’s threads?

    SF April 19, 2007, 3:44 pm
  • Where’s a guy with a slice of pizza and an arm when you need one? Stupid fan blocking ARod’s play on that foul only one row into the stands.

    attackgerbil April 19, 2007, 3:59 pm
  • C’mon ARod, hit a meaningful (somewhat) HR for once!

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:08 pm
  • Of course. Of course. Maybe the Yanks will rally and he’ll bat again in the 9th..

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:09 pm
  • Giambi down looking at a wide third strike. Ball game.

    attackgerbil April 19, 2007, 4:11 pm
  • “Where’s Jim? Doesn’t he root for his own team in his own team’s threads?”
I wondered that the other day myself. Wish I’d seen more of this game; I like Carmona’s chances of functioning as a starter, at least compared to how he did as a reliever. Was this game a matter of him throwing well or NY hitting poorly?

    desturbd1 April 19, 2007, 4:12 pm
  • Ooops.. end of 8. Looked like a 9 on the tiny screen I’m watching on.

    attackgerbil April 19, 2007, 4:16 pm
  • Rasner (can I call him Razzmatazz?) did actually a pretty darn good job, only givign up one run. Props to him. I’m not sure why he was puleld after only 81 pitches… the bullpen is gonna be tired goign into Fenway.
Not that I mind. It bodes well fo rthe Sox
The Yankee bats however.. ahve been quiet this game and are HIGHLY unlikely to be quiet two games in a row which bodes poorly for the Sox
What Im saying is.. tommorrows game is really really up in the air.

    Dionysus April 19, 2007, 4:23 pm
  • ARod’s throw is high on the 5-3; Phelps has to leap to make the grab, pulling him off the bag. Would have been close but they would have got Blake if the throw was on line. Run scores on the E-5.

    attackgerbil April 19, 2007, 4:26 pm
  • Phelps hits a HR, Posada hits a single. That misplay by ARod might become costly.. but maybe he gets to go up there and redeem himself..

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:37 pm
  • Wow, looking at the box score, I wonder, “Why does Joe Torre hate Darrel Rasner and/or Andy Pettitte and/or his bullpen?” This is the second Rasner start in a row he’s taken him out very early and left the pen to pitch more than half the game, thus leaving the onus on Pettitte to pitch deep the following game and save the pen from being overworked.

    Paul SF April 19, 2007, 4:39 pm
  • Is it jinx day today? =P Ya, tomorrow will be interesting, now that they’re against “real” hitting! ;)

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:40 pm
  • Jeter makes it a 2 run game. Tying run on first.

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:41 pm
  • The Indians so-called Closers is imploding. He already ahs a 6.00 ERA. Have I mentioned hwo glad I am to have Papelbon who DOESNT suck at closing like this guy?
Have I mentioned that the Indians have ridiculously bad pitching it seems?

    Dionysus April 19, 2007, 4:41 pm
  • Jeter now the tying run. Can the Indians possibly suck any more?

    Paul SF April 19, 2007, 4:41 pm
  • C’mon Bobby! A double in the gap would be nice!

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:42 pm
  • And Abreu now the goahead run after Jeter scores Posada. Joe Borowski = suckitude.

    Paul SF April 19, 2007, 4:43 pm
  • Is it my imagination or is Joe Borowski not really much of a pitcher?

    SF April 19, 2007, 4:43 pm
  • Ya, if only Carmona can be the closer!
    Oh wait..

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:43 pm
  • That ARod error now looms huge. But, he can redeem himself!

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:44 pm
  • Maybe I shouldn’t have picked the Indians…

    SF April 19, 2007, 4:44 pm
  • Borowski goes beyond suckitude, Paul. He is a quantum singularity of suck. A swirlign black hole. A empty void like the space between galaxies.

    Dionysus April 19, 2007, 4:44 pm
  • Now pitching for the Cleveland Indians…
    Calvin Schiraldi.

    SF April 19, 2007, 4:45 pm

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:45 pm
  • are you kidding?
Man, I’m glad he’s getting this out of his system now!

    um, ah, OK, here:
But A(pril)-rod can’t hit a meaningful homer off a GOOD closer.
    So THERE!!!

    I’m unhappy…

    Paul SF April 19, 2007, 4:47 pm
  • All these HR’s don’t count because they’re not against “real” pitching!

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:48 pm
  • Holy crap, Cleveland sucks.

    Steve April 19, 2007, 4:48 pm
  • The Yankees are going to pay through the nose and out the ears for this guy in six months. Nobody is happier than Boras this last month. Drew is sharp, Matsuzaka is blazing, and A-Rod is setting history everyday….
I can’t wait to see that contract.

    Brad April 19, 2007, 4:48 pm
  • The Indians *snicker* Closer *snort* now has an ERA of 13.50
    I meand WOW.
Did they know they were playign the Yankees? Did they knwo the Yankees have very very very good hitting? That tehy cant throw complete crap at the Yankees and expect to win?
Disgusting. The Indians should be forced to forfit the season.

    Dionysus April 19, 2007, 4:48 pm
  • Way to ruin a happy feeling, guys. Sheesh. Eric Wedge is truly an idiot when it comes to managing bullpens.

    Paul SF April 19, 2007, 4:50 pm

    SF April 19, 2007, 4:50 pm

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:52 pm
  • Oh, I’m aware, Lar.

    Brad April 19, 2007, 4:53 pm
  • Wait, so does this crazy comeback mean YF can shelve the “lucky Marco Scutaro” home run whines?

    SF April 19, 2007, 4:53 pm
  • Enough sf whining —
    A-ROD! A-ROD! A-ROD!
What a game for A-Rod – let’s in the unearned run, loses his hitting streak, goes 0 for 4 with how many strikeouts? — and then — the fates conspire to give him another chance.
    April Rod no more.

    john April 19, 2007, 4:54 pm
  • absolutely not, SF! That lucky sonova…

    tom yf April 19, 2007, 4:54 pm

    Devine April 19, 2007, 4:55 pm
  • SF – when we’re back in first, that’s when the “freakishly lucky” Macro Scutaro HR will die down.. ;)
But really, who isn’t lucky when it comes to getting a HR off Rivera?
I actually like Scutaro. I met him once when he played for the Mets. Nice guy.

    Lar April 19, 2007, 4:55 pm
  • Oh. My. Lord.

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 4:56 pm
  • the fates conspire to give him another chance
Fate looks exactly like Eric Wedge, apparently. What does this mean for the rest of us?

    SF April 19, 2007, 4:56 pm
  • Dev – YES it was. good catch

    Seth April 19, 2007, 4:57 pm
  • I am not whining, hardly. I am just REALLY glad that the Sox were able to come back as well.
This would have been a real pisser had the Sox lost earlier in the day. Tomorrow (and this weekend) should be a TON of fun!

    SF April 19, 2007, 4:58 pm
  • I don’t think it’s whining so much as pure unadulterated rage. We’re Soxfans after all, that’s what we do. Rage. Just ask Joe.
    “April Rod no more.”
Except it’s still April. And he’s still A-Rod.

    Paul SF April 19, 2007, 5:02 pm

  • I just realized that I will be in the boondocks this weekend in Columbia County and unless a landscaper took down a tree upstate I won’t be able to get my Directv installed since there won’t be a line to the satellite and therefore won’t be able to see any baseball. Plus my internet isn’t working up there.
Oh God…what have I done with my planning for this weekend.

    SF April 19, 2007, 5:06 pm
  • I like that we will start the weekend with a rested bullpen. sigh.

    Seth April 19, 2007, 5:08 pm
  • SF, there is a (dive) bar called Melino’s in Hudson which will have the Sox/Yankees games on. Cheap beer, local color. (I live in the Columbia County.)
Probably many others, but that’s my recommendation.

    Hudson April 19, 2007, 5:09 pm
  • Hey, I live in Columbia County (when I’m not in Boston) and it’s really nice! Well, not Hudson, but the Hudson Valley in general is a very nice place. What brings you to my neck of the woods?

    Hudson April 19, 2007, 6:00 pm
  • Hehe, sorry Hudson, I didn’t know you’d lived in Hudson (although, really…)
My home’s in Kinderhook. How’d you get to be a BoSox fan?

    Andrew April 19, 2007, 10:06 pm
  • Andrew — I grew up in Massachusetts, lifelong Sox fan. I’ve lived in either New York City or State since ’91, but obviously would never switch.
There are a fair number of Sox fans around Columbia County… My friend Bob in Philmont, Dave in Germantown, Robert in Hudson.
