Replay Blues

I couldn’t help it today – I had to fire up the DVR and watch the end of game 4 again. It was a few minutes into the recording and I saw Jimmy Fallon kissing Drew Barrymore on the field, apparently filming the ending to their new movie “Fever Pitch”, based on the wonderful memoir by Nick Hornby about his obsession with the English football club Arsenal. And it made me sick. Not just because Jimmy Fallon is horribly and smugly unfunny, but because it’s no different than the ill-fated “Spiderman on the bases” fiasco. For MLB to allow these clowns on the field is one (awful) thing, but it’s an entirely more appalling second thing for Fox to flash to them as if they were part of a sincere celebration. Shame on MLB and Fox for this. I now have to wait until the highlight DVD comes out to watch the end of the game without this visual bastardization of the championship celebration.

Postscript: The Farrelly brothers, extraordinary Boston sports fans, should have made a point of asking the proper authorities to keep their work off the screen, under any circumstances. So shame on them too.

  • So the Sox victory has been spoiled for SF? AWESOME!!!
PS: Though we wouldn’t be caught dead watching Taxit (themovie), we’ve go no beef with Jimmy Fallon. We miss him on Weekend Update.

  • Nah, not spoiled, not at all. It “made me sick” that they were part of the broadcast, though it did not lessen my elation. Fallon and Barrymore sullied the broadcast, that’s all. Don’t get your hopes up – this feeling isn’t going to wear off for a loooooong time.

  • I agree with you on all accounts. Keep them off the field, and Fallon is not as funny as he thinks he is. But then again, neither is Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, etc. In my opinion.
I hate the sports medias obsession with any “celebrity: in attendance, as if their presence is a ringing endorsement to the importance of the event.
