Return of the Ace, and Other History: Tribe-Sox Gamer II

Josh Beckett was arguably the best pitcher in the American League, working on a string of seven consecutive victories until, while throwing a fourth-inning slider May 13, his right thumbnail sliced into his middle finger. The Sox ended up winning the game, but Beckett’s streak ended.

Tonight, he returns — hopefully as good as he was before the avulsion. He no longer leads baseball in wins; John Lackey is 8-3. But he’s still working on an undefeated record, and still has Roger Clemens’ 1986 fifteen-start mark of 14-0 in his sights.

Meanwhile, Kevin Youkilis, as referenced below, is working on a record of his own, hoping to become the first (and only) member of the Red Sox not named Jim Rice to record at least two hits in nine straight games. He’s not the only one who’s hot: J.D. Drew, Manny Ramirez and Dustin Pedroia seem to be putting it together after long slumps, and Mike Lowell remains torrid.

Oh, and they also hope to expand their historic lead in the AL East to 12 games. The first 50 games were a treat — one of the best the franchise has ever had to start a season. Here’s hoping the .700 baseball extends into the next 50.

Comment away!

  • 3 Sox pitchers to watch tonight: Beckett, with his return from his avulsion/skin tear/blister/finger thingy, and Lester and Timlin due to pitch at Pawtuckett.
I have a feeling Lester will show that he’s ready to come back to the bigs. Beckett, I have NO sense of- he could be afraid to throw his curve and get lit up, walk off after 2 innings with a skin problem, or dominate for 8 innings. Any of those results wouldn’t surprise me.
I’m not optimistic about Timlin. He got hit hard his last time. It seems to me that in a couple of weeks we’ll be seeing a press conference with him, announcing his retirement.
But those are just my gut instincts. I’ve been wrong before- hell, I turned off the TV after the 8th inning on Mothers Day.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 6:58 pm
  • This is the first I’ve heard about Becket’s thumbnail “slicing into” his finger. From all other reports it seemed that, like his blister problems, the friction of throwing teh ball with rotation was the reason for the skin problems. Is the thumbnail really the culprit? Has this been confirmed elsewhere?

  • And they’re off……

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:07 pm
  • So far, so good for Beckett. He got ahead of all the batters he faced (Peralta hit one between Youk and the foul line on 0-2) and threw quite a few breaking pitches.
Peralta gets doubled off first- he didn’t read that hit and run AT ALL. Did he get deeked out by the SS/2B?

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Ok. I need you guys to help keep me updated. My house is sans internet nd I’m at a cafe downtown. Unfortunatly, the flash player isnt updated enough to let me use gameday.
    So.. help!

    Dionysus May 29, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Is it a sign of completely and utter addiction that Im sitting at an internet cafe using a BLOG to keep updated on the game?

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Lugo on first, I have no idea how he got there. Coco at the plate.

    SF May 29, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • I’ll do my best, Dio.
Julio Lugo leads off with a bunt single towards 3rd base. The Tribe has a rookie making only his 3rd start there, so the Sox are testing him early.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • I’m distraught by the lack of Papi AGAIN. Are they just gonna give him the series off? Maybe just cause its a left-hander and why not give him an extra day in that case?

    Dionysus May 29, 2007, 7:21 pm
  • Hey Dion — don’t worry, we’ll keep you posted.
Yeah, any ideas as to why Papi isn’t in there?

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:22 pm
  • Papi was a topic of discussion in the pre-game. No one seems to know if he’ll play tomorrow or not, since Thursday is an off day.
After Crisp flys out to center, Youk drives a ball off the wall, and Lugo scores from first. 1-0 Sox.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:23 pm
  • Getting back to Ortiz, no one seems to worried about him. Guess it’s a luxury that having a 11+ game lead in late-May affords you.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • Youk is gonna burn that place down if he continues like this! And to think they all laughed at me in my fantasy league when I actually drafted him… Yeeeees!

  • One more hit for Youkie and he ties Jim Rice.
    Manny is at DH again.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • Manny intentionally walked (in the first inning!). Let’s see if JD can make ‘em pay.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Manny was walked.
Here comes J.D. “Stop talking about Trot” Drew. :P

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Weak dribbler by Drew to second…No DP though.

    ToddSF May 29, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • Come on Mikey.. knock ‘em in.

    Dionysus May 29, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Drew grounds into the FC, and Lowell follows up with a fly to center. No more damage done.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Sorry Dion. Mikey flies out to center.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Darn. Well, at least we got a run. Still.. gonna need a lot more than that against this team.
    Youkilis at 21! Weeee!

    Dionysus May 29, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Side note on Roger Clemens returning to the Majors: they’re avoiding the Fenway series. Frak.
Now that would have been something. Clemens returning to Fenway. I wonder what kind of reception he’ll receive? :P

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • Similar to Johnny’s I’d imagine, Rain. Mostly boos, a few scattered cheers.
And.. in the GAME.. hopefully the same reception from the bats that Pedro got!

    Dionysus May 29, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • 1-2-3 inning for Beckett, 10 pitches. Crossed fingers effective to this point at the SF household.

    SF May 29, 2007, 7:37 pm
  • Woot.. so far.
    Woot so far, indeed.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • Alright, what is up with Papi? I’m not sure if I buy this sore hamstring thing. Did by chance we hire Billy B from the Pats to handle injury updates?

    Rob May 29, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • Hah, yeah. I remember that start from Pedro. He got rocked.
Beck with a clean top of the 2nd…all fly outs. So far, so good.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • Awright, enough with the love-fest for Trot already. He got a nice ovation yesterday, which was appropriate. But he plays for another team now.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:41 pm
  • Man if I was at Fenway for a Clemens start I would be chanting “RANGE… SAFE… ARM!” Whenever he was pitching!

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 7:43 pm
  • 8 pitch AB for WMP, that actually is impressive for him.

    Rob May 29, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • What a grab by Sizemore, running full blast straight back towards the centerfield wall, catching a rope by Wily Mo. Fantastic stuff!

    SF May 29, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • Wily Mo robbed of a double there.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • That blank was me…
expect a lot of blanks from me. This computer does not cookie my info and I always forget!

    Dionysus May 29, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Willy got robbed; GREAT catch by Sizemore there.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Dellucci lazily flies to Drew on three pitches. One down.

    SF May 29, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • Grounder to Lugo, I think it hit off Beckett and slowed down, allowing Lugo to grab the ball and throw to first. Two down.
(Replay shows it didn’t hit Beckett.)

    SF May 29, 2007, 7:49 pm
  • DOH!
Yo Brad…. If you see this later I was logged on ur MLB.com account for game audio and I went to post on Youks blog suggesting a blog title and it posted with ur account name….. so if he chooses it and gives u a prize i get half lol.
I suggested “Youktastic!” for his blog name :p

    TJ May 29, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • Glad for that SF. Last thign we need is anything hitting Beckett.

    Dionysus May 29, 2007, 7:50 pm

    Hold on.

  • Its okay, Dion — we know its you. :P
    Beckett looks good. Real good.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • No such luck. Still reliant on you guys.
Lets see.. a buck per fifteen minutes. 3 hours…. 12 bucks for the game.

  • Wow. You are a diehard, man. :P
Then again, we all are. :P Sox fans are diehards.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • Youk out on a grounder…the Droid would have beat it out.

    Tom sf May 29, 2007, 7:59 pm
  • No luck on the home half of the third – Lugo grounds out, Coco flies out, and Youk hits a ball right at Peralta (who I still think is waaay to bulky to be playing shotstop.)

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:00 pm
  • Maybe Youkie could bet with Pedroia just to see who’s really the fastest? :P
Remember that Youkie’s kinda lucky with betting — he made Paps look like a rooster last year, with the mohawk thing and all.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • Beckett K’s Sizemore again on a curveball. He’s looking very sharp.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • Heh. Man I LOVE our former farmhands. Weird bets, arguements about speed that lead to inside-the-parkers.
    Speaking of famrhands….

  • Over at the Jays-Yankes game, Toronto is up by 1.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:03 pm
  • Peralta walks. Man, you guys are gonna get sick of me saying how bulky this kid looks to me.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Although it’s easy to be loose when you’re playing .700 ball, this Sox clubhouse does seem to be pretty close. No real bad eggs in the whole bunch.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Who got on base for the Indians and how? *eyes the scoreboard that may be slow*

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • Double play, Peralta and Hafner erased.
Bulky Peralta and even bulkier Hafner. :P

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • Are you able to watch the game, Rain? That’s great if you are.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Beckett kicks ass. If it weren’t for his injury issues, I’d be completely unworried about him. He’s clearly using all three pitches, and using them well. Damn, we really have this guy signed that long at that price?
Of course, his middle finger will fall off next inning now.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Sox’ offense not doing much against Sowers tonight. 2 down here in the fourth already.

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:10 pm
  • We need Papi back.
and to get to Sowers. We need more of a cushion than this.. which isnt ANY cushion.
Are we at least driving his PC up SF?

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 8:11 pm
  • Sowers apepars to be pitching the game of his life

    Rob May 29, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Just posted on LoHud Yanks:
    “_Kei Igawa in AAA tonight: 4 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk, 6 k’s. 82 pitches, 55 strikes._”

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • 56 pitches through four. So, no. He should be able to throw seven at this pace.

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Sowers up to 57 pitches
    Beckett at 51

    Rob May 29, 2007, 8:13 pm
  • Nope, Ayuh, relying on Gameday. All I’m getting later on is another replay of the Yanks-Angels finale.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:13 pm
  • Dang, cause.. if my memory serves from last nights ESPN.. the bullpen is pretty much Clevelands weak point.

Lester through 4. 3 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 4 ks. Not his best work in AAA, but again lookin’ good. Got out of a bases loaded jam in the first.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • Rain- be careful about relying on Gameday as to how a player “looks”. Stats are useful, but they don’t tell you everything. How a player looks on the field is important- how he carries himself, how oonfident he looks, how he reacts to a bad play, etc – all those things you really have to see in person.
That said, on TV, he looks awfully impressive.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • Beckett quickly ahead of Martinez, with a good hook and then a good fastball. The 0-2 pitch is a ball, and then the 1-2 pitch (a splitter?) is low, 2-2. Martinez fouls off a good heater to keep the count at 2-2. (Nice at-bat here from VM). The next pitch is high heat that VM can’t catch, K.
(meanwhile, in Toronto, it’s 1-0 Jays after the top of the fifth)

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • Is it safe to say now that Igawa is a bust? :P

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Looping grounder, Youk tosses to Beckett for the second out.

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Marcum appears (via refreshign box scores) to have retired the Yanks in order again.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • One pitch grounder to Lowell, another fantastic inning from Beckett.

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Yooooooooooook.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Kei Igawa… a few good seasons at the beginning of the decade. Last few years just average and going downhill. Lots of control problems, lack of motivation. Hanshin Tigers made out like bandits with the posting fee.

    kyotofan May 29, 2007, 8:20 pm

  • Pettitte throwing quite a game in Canada.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • Sowers ahead of Tek 0-2 quickly, then a waste pitch makes it 1-2. Tek watches another low, outside pitch go by, and the 2-2 pitch is CRUSHED for a homer. 2-0 Sox!!!
(now I really have to go!)

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:24 pm

Maybe Dustin will steal a base just to prove he’s faster than Youkie. :P

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • Wow. Pedroia really is makign us regret any and all doubts we had about him, isn’t he?

  • Force out from Lugo. Hah.
    Coco up.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Lugo hits into the force. Lugo too fast for the DP.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Aaaaaaaand force from Crisp. Feeling relatively secure given the pitcher, but could stand to have a couple more if we/they can get ‘em.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Coco grounds out, too.
Here I will ask you, Ayuh — does Coco look comfortable batting 2nd? You get to see the intangibles. :P

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 8:36 pm
  • Dellucci hits it fairly hard, but shy of the track in center, one down.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:37 pm
  • I’m not feelign secure at all. The Indians are VERY good and gave our bullpen fits last night.
Man, I can’t wait till next year and Ellsbury. Coco is an amazing defender, but.. his bat never managed to live up to its potential. The Boston Effect, I’d imagine.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 8:37 pm
  • K. Beckett’s 5th.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • Coco definitely doesn’t look comfortable at the plate, Rain. I think he’s overswinging.
It may end up that they’ll flip him and Pedroia, if Dustin keeps hitting like he has been.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • Damon and A-Rod get on, but the Yankees don’t score in the 6th. Still 1-0 Toronto.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Now that was well-struck, but Coco is fast and tracks it down (no dive necessary this time). Beckett through 6. No runs.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • I perfer Coco hitting 8th, Ayuh. I want him on base (if he can get on that is) when Pedroia, a contatc hitter, hits. This allows the hit-and-run with Coco’s speed.
On top of that it splits up Coco and Lugo, which tonight is showing us is a goood idea.
On top of THAT theres my point last night about havign Pedroia there to turn the lineup over.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:44 pm

For a minute, I thought you were suggesting that WMP bat 2nd. If that had been the case, I would have seriously worried about your sanity!

Sad.. so much power and potential. Just.. screwed up by getting signed too damn young. Not his fault at all.

It’ll be two out, man on 2nd for Tek.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Yay Lester! A few more AAA starts and you’ll be with us…then watch out!
Seriously, guys.. look at the Yanks numbers against lefties. Now pitcure us throwing Lester at them. Now squeal with glee.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • It is sad about Willy Moe. However, it’s not an uncommon fate, for a player with a lot of power to be undone by major league breaking balls. I don’t know that his age had anything to do with it.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • I think MLB needs to alter its rules and when a team trades for someone whos relatively young but out of options they can choose to send him down immediatly upon aquiring him but just that once.

    TJ May 29, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • 3-0 count to Tek, two down. The 3-0 pitch is off the plate, sort of, and Tek walks. 1st and 2nd for Wily Mo.

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • ANd of course Hansen gives up 2 hits and a walk so far with jkust 1 out…. Paging Colorado….still want him??? lol

    TJ May 29, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Youk needs topics for his blog. Maybe a run at .400? A week more of this and he’s close. Youk and Lowell are great bookends, at the corners and in the lineup. A joint MVP.

    kyoto May 29, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • TJ: the Player’s Union would NEVER EVER let that into the CBA.

  • Ayuh, he didnt get much development time in the minors. He was signed at 18 and almost immediatly spent time at the big club, which started messing his options or somethign like that.
I heard an explanation once on WRKO during a agme.. but I cant rememebr the details. It was somethign like that. Screwed by the system and never will have the chance to learn discipline/fielding.

  • Wily Mo walks. Plugged.

    SF May 29, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Giambi hits a homer for the Yanks, and they are tied with the Jays 1-1.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • Giambi homerun.

    kyoto May 29, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • But they should it would benefit the players more to get regualr time in the minors to get things fixed.

    TJ May 29, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • Yanks have tied the game in Toronto on a Giambi homer.

    Rob May 29, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • Damn, Yankees tied it up.
Wait, it’s better for the Sox if Toronto loses.
Oh no. I’m finding myself in a moral quandrary.

    Ayuh - SF May 29, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • But, TJ, you know as well as I do that the bottomline is about money and you dont make money in the minors
    Unless your Kei Igawa.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • Cabrera is melting down. His last three appearances he has given a homer up to the 1st batter he faced. Now he has walked three straight batters.
I guess this way he is getting the work throwing his pitches and has only given up a run.

    Rob May 29, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Pedroia walked while loaded. 4-0. Oh no, the hole in the lineup…at the 1-2 spots.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • See, I think I’d like the Yankees to lose, just for the entertainment value of reading the NY papers every day. It’s much more fun to watch them lose and see all the fireworks (or consternation about possible fireworks) than to have them win.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Pedroia, Youkilis… are really coming through for us of late. Really. Toss Lowell into the mix and you’ve got one hell of a productive infield.
Except Lugo. Prove me wrong here, Lugo.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • THe player should still be paid the same. Think of it as an extended rehab assignment.

    TJ May 29, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Lugo strikes out with the bases loaded.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • K. 4-0 Boston to the 7th.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • I would also rather the Yanks lose. For the fun of seeing them feel what its like to be.. well.. everyone else AND because, frankly… I’m not worried about Toronto or Baltimore making a HUGE run.
I do think it could happen with the Yanks. History teaches me to be afraid and afraid I am. So every single foot I can see them dug deeper, I’ll take.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • LFRS looks at a good pitch on the inside corner and gets in a huff about it, but it was certainly a good pitch. LFRS does not disappoint.
Why are he and Crisp batting 1-2?!
(I am not complaining too loudly here, I feel bad complaining about anything to do with the Sox right now, frankly, but still, 1-2 with those guys?!)

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • 1-1 going to the bottom of the seventh in Toronto.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Agreed SF. If Ortiz is not in the lineup put Pedroia at the 2 hole. I can still understand wanting Lugo’s speed up front (he HAS to heat up eventually doesn’t he), but the two of them together are DEATH.
Ok.. so.. next year.. who replaces Lugo?

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Beckett rings up Sizemore. 1 down in the 7th.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Pedroia is batting .407 over the past month thats 3rd in all of baseball for players with over 50 ABs in that span

    TJ May 29, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • What is wrong with WIly Mo, basically? Is it just the inability to handle breaking pitches?

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • Ja-Honny flares one to right for a cheap single. Drew takes a shorthop off his crown while sliding into the ball – ouch! He looks ok.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • Wily Mo = Pedro Cerrano, Rain.
We need to send him Jobuu and a box of live chickens.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Hafner pulls one into the corner that Drew misses, it rolls around back to the ‘pen and Hafner ends up on third – should be a double with an error, perhaps even a single and a 2-base error, though it will probably go as a triple since Drew didn’t touch the ball. 1 down, 4-1 Sox, Hafner at third.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Hafner triples in the 1st run. Would be happy to see them get only two here.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Hafner triples. And Victor Martinez is up.
    Maan, this lineup is scary.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • Oh hell. Here comes the trouble.
Come on guys.. Beckett’s been so good night.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Martinez grounds the 1-2 pitch to Youk, no play at home. Two down. No reason for Youk to risk the base there by throwing home, take the sure out.
    Two down, 4-2 Sox.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • Dammit.. I was really hoping Beckett would shut them out.
Still cosndierign they have an AMAZING offense 2 runs vs them is far better than 1 run vs, oh say.. the blue Jays.
Come on guys. You can do this. Just hold on.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • Nixon up, Beckett gets ahead 0-1, then throws a fastball in the dirt for 1-1. Nixon fouls off the 1-1 to make it 1-2. At 1-2 Beckett Ks Nixon on an outside fastball. But for the Hafner clout (should have been stranded at second were it not for the Drew misplay), another good inning. Very, very reassuring work from Beckett tonight.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • LOL. Pedro Cerrano. :P
Frak, my Gameday is freezing. What happened?

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Jays have 2 on, 1 down in the 7th. Bottom of the Jays lineup coming up, though, so we have no illusions.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • 7K, 7 IP, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 hits. Beckett has thrown 91. 1 more, I’d assume.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Indeed, SF.
This is also his first start in.. two weeks. No tuneups in the minors or nothin’. So… very impressive.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • No, I don’t think so Devine. He hasn’t pitched in a long time. I think thats it for him.
Syder or Donnelly then Oky, I’d imagine

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • Looks like Rodriguez botched a double play ball in Toronto, only getting a forceout at third. Now it’s first and third with two out for Royce Clayton.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • Coco whiffs.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:18 pm
  • Hill steals home for Toronto
    Jays 2-1

    Rob May 29, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • Youk up to .359 right now. First pitch he takes for a strike. The 0-1 is a slider inside and low for 1-1. The 1-1 pitch is ripped past third foul to make it 1-2. Another foul ball.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • Aaron Hill Stole Home!!!!!!!! 2-1 Jays

    TJ May 29, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • I doubt the Jays score. My best home is they manage to drag this game into Extras. Deplete the Yankee bullpen, then HOPEFULLY it gets wasted more with Clippard tommorrow.. leavign them tired for us even with the day of rest on Thursday.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:20 pm
  • HE STOLE HOME? HOLY CRUD!
Wow.. Yankee fans must be exploding in frustration now.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Youk watches the 1-2 go low and outside for 2-2. The 2-2 is lifted to Trot Nixon for the second out.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Hill steals home. Oh Canada up by one.

    kyoto May 29, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • both Jays runs are unearned.

    TJ May 29, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • Manny crushes one over Sizemore’s head for a two-out double. Manny is locked in now, I think. Some insurance here would be superb.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • Man…I almost wrote about Manny’s double in the Yankee thread…that would have been wrong, children, very wrong.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • how come Drew don’t ever have any expression?

    mike May 29, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • I agree on the return of Manny, SF. he’s not gonna hit everyday.. but I fully expect to get what we’d expect from him again.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Crap, Drew. 2-run lead through 7.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Drew hits a one-hopper to Josh Barfield, stranding Manny at second.
Six outs for the win, I think we might see Okajima soon. Not sure if I’d run Beckett out there again considering the finger thing, but I am certainly no doctor and it could be that he’s fine. If that’s the case, send him out for as many batters as he gets out, with a short leash.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • A-Rod up, Jeter at first (he willed Casey Janssen into an error, such is the intangible power of Derek Jeter). One down.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • A-Rod reaches on ANOTHER error by the Jays. Nice job, guys.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Someon etell me who the Sox are sending!

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Donnelly, then Oki, would be the plan I suppose. Donnelly proceeds tohit Garko with a pitch. Stupid.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Ah, Donnelly. Okay.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • Ah, Donnelly. Not okay. HBP.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • Lugo catches a popout. One down.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • God dammit. If we lose this one, I will implode.
If the Jays lose too, then I will implode the planet.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • Donnelly hits Garko. Ouch.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 9:30 pm
  • Posada ties the game up with a single. 1/2 one down.
Barfield flies to Drew, two down.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • Weird little catch there by Drew…doesn’t look like he was settled well under it. Still, 2 out.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • Not beign able to watch GameDay or listen to Audio is drving me stircrazy…

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • Donnelly starts the pinch hitter Casey Blake off with a strike. The 0-1 pitch is low, 1-1. The third pitch is fouled wide of third. 1-2. At 1-2, Tek stops a wild pitch outside and low. 2-2. Donnelly paces around the back of the mound. The 2-2 is in the dirt as well. Donnelly is a bit wild for my taste, if he grooves the 3-2 pitch it’s trouble.
Here’s the payoff: grooved, and ripped to Pena in right. Predictable. Get Donnelly out of there right now.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • Lopez from the pen.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:36 pm
  • Giambi working a long at-bat, and strikes out on the ninth pitch. Men still on 1/2, two down, for Abreu.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:36 pm
  • I’m gonna vomit…

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:36 pm
  • Yankees score just the once. Tied after the top of the 8th.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Donnelly just doesn’t really impress me very much. Can’t say he’s been very bad this year (he’s been ok, nothing special), but he really doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Javy Lopez in. First pitch wide to Sizemore, 1-0. Next pitch grounded weakly to Pedroia, and Lopez does the job perfectly. Going to the bottom of the eighth, still 4-2.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:38 pm
  • Indeed SF.. our bullpen has been far better than I expected (I fully expected Donnelly and Romero to be FAR worse than they;ve been, and didn’t expect Okajima to be this good), but it still needs work.
I say thats our move at the deadline. A quality releiver. I’d imagien Murphy and somethign could get us one

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Did you like the Lopez move, SF? You evidently agreed with the timing…and the guy does appear to be death to lefties.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Lind doubles off Pettitte to start the Jays 8th.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:40 pm
  • PS Pettitte at 106 pitches.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:41 pm
  • Yeah, right move by Tito to go to Lopez. Now he has Oki to start the ninth, much better than trying to squeeze four outs out of him. Tito made the right moves in the eighth, whether I like Donnelly or not he’s the guy to go to.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Come on Jays.. two sac flys.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Lind to 3rd on the sac bunt.

    Devine May 29, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Gameday says injury delay.
    Who got injured?

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • Lowell goes behind 0-2, then fouls the 0-2 of his foot (second pitch in a row he’s fouled off himself. Ouch!). The next 0-2 pitch is laced into the seats in left, about two seats in from the field. Still 0-2.
(Scott Proctor in for the Yank. I say “squeeze”!).
    Lowell Ks.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • mike lowe is a dirt dog!!!

    mike May 29, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • Donnelly WAS the move… although, I have a soft spot for Snyder (he signed my hat!). He hasnt had a lot of work lately, since he’s the long man and we’ve been going deep.
    Lets get some insurance!

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • Actually.. “mike” is correct, I think
I would call Lowell a Dirt Dog.

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • Tek up, first pitch high. 1-0. Second pitch is right down the pipe for 1-1. Low and outside pitch makes it 2-1 to Jason. The fourth pitch is grounded deep to short but Peralta makes a strong throw to nail the slow Tek. Two down.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • The Jays have scored on a sac fly by Rios. 3-2 Toronto.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:47 pm

    No jinxes, please.

    Rain SF May 29, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • HUSH RAIN!!! No jinx!
This Cleveland offense is VERY dangerous… 2 runs might as well be HALF a run. Remember last night?

    Anonymous May 29, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • 1-1 to Peralta. Okajima pitching, of course.
The third pitch is crushed to left, but way foul. 1-2. Next pitch is in the dirt. 2-2. Fifth pitch is grounded foul, wide of third. Another good at-bat from Peralta. Oki throws something offspeed that Peralta just gets a piece of. Still 2-2. Peralta grounds to Lowell. One down.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Cano grounds to 3rd 2 down

    TJ May 29, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • Two down in the ninth up in Toronto.

    SF May 29, 2007, 9:55 pm
