Riot Boys

I recall an ugly incident in 1999 at Fenway Park, and sanctimonious Yankees fans and local media pummeling the Beantown faithful for their immature and dangerous behavior in response to some tough (actually, bad) calls. What say thee to the Stadium dwellers tonight? Class acts? I know YF wasn’t involved in these shenanigans, but I’d be curious to know if he had the urge…

Some angry fans in the crowd of 56,128 at Yankee Stadium threw baseballs onto the field and Francona wanted to pull his team off the field. Yankees manager Joe Torre then came out and argued the call briefly.

The game was delayed for about 10 minutes while the play was sorted out.

More objects were thrown onto the field in the top of the ninth inning, and an announcement was made telling fans to not throw anything.

Kevin Hallinan, senior vice president of security for the commissioner’s office, went on the field and spoke to security personnel. Police officers, wearing helmets, then kneeled shoulder-to-shoulder down both foul lines in an attempt to prevent any further incidents. The officers left the field for the bottom of the ninth.

  • What to say? Only jackasses throw things on the field, and there are jackasses everywhere alcohol is served and fevers run high. For the record, no one from the bleachers (where YF was seated) let loose with anything more nasty than a “bullshit” chant. But the truth was, from where we sat it was impossible to see just what happened, though going from one run down with one out and A-Rod on second, to two runs down and Derek on first and two outs was devastating, and the fact that no explanation was given was a serious frustration. (Interference was the assumption, but from 415 feet who could see it?).
That said, the article you reprint is inaccurate. An announcement was made THE MOMENT material started to land on the field. It was repeated in the ninth. The whole riot squad thing seemed ridiculous and a waste of time.

  • I was shocked, SHOCKED to see some idiots — surely just some Red Sox ragamuffins trying to incite — in Yankee Stadium do their best to try to turn it into Fenway. But, as usual, the classy and gentlemanly Yankee fans won out and it was never nearly as bad as the 1999 game in Fenway…

  • The only jackass is you. The game was in the Bronx and Yankee fans out numbered Sox fans AT LEAST 5 to 1. And you have the balls to say Sox fans were responsable?!! And im sure the LA riots were caused by a couple white guys right? Who are you trying to kid?
