Rise and Shine: Rays-Sox Gamer III

Patriots’ Day means one thing to me: the Red Sox play at 8 a.m. Pacific/11 a.m. Eastern. And that is awesome.

Hellickson (a good pitcher who has done okay against the Sox) vs Dempster. Awake to comment this fine Monday?

  • Was at the game yesterday.
That’s my second close call with Buchholz.
As a side note, yesterday at Fenway was “meet and greet” day. All fans were allowed down onto the field to meet the team as they walked around and warmed up.
It was a great time, and great game. I missed the park, as I did not go last year at all (equal parts stubborn and anger).

  • I also love Patriots Day games; the work day just slides right by.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 10:35 am
  • Dempster 12 pitches, 2 Ks in the top of the 1st.
Ellsbury leads off bottom 1 with a triple, scores on Victorino out. Sox did a good job against Hellickson, seeing 21 pitches.

  • Dempster looks pretty good.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 11:46 am
  • ^ obviously, the kiss of death to him right there.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 11:47 am
  • And Eva goes long.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 11:59 am
  • Eh, f*ck, tie game. Right as I tune in, too. Still, pretty solid for Dempster thus far. Pretty please get through this next guy?

    Devine April 15, 2013, 11:59 am
  • Okay.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 12:00 pm
  • Blergh, I was just thinking, “Oh man, he doesn’t have a home run, he’s pretty much due.” Ka-boom.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 12:01 pm
  • 7k

    Brad April 15, 2013, 12:17 pm
  • Longo’s first XBH of the season.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 12:18 pm
  • Yah!!!!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 12:22 pm
  • Salty sure can run into one sometimes. 2-1 Sox.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 12:24 pm
  • S. Drew double with one out. Come on, one clean base hit to bring him in.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 12:27 pm
  • Nope. Gomes K. Bradley flyout.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 12:32 pm
  • Good rake by Drew there.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 12:33 pm
  • Frick, lost Zobrist. Facing Longoria with runners at the corners, 2 out.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 12:45 pm
  • Whew.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 12:50 pm
  • 9 K’s for Dempster. Actually 10 as I believe he struck out Longoria before the missed call at first. And then again, ump also missed that Pedroia was safe in his last at bat.

pale blue eyes April 15, 2013, 1:02 pm
  • And here’s the 10th K anyway.

pale blue eyes April 15, 2013, 1:03 pm
  • That’s a hell of a game for Dempster. 7 innings, 101 pitches, 2 hits (a homer and a single), 2 walks, and TEN strikeouts.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:03 pm
  • Makings of another good game here.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:04 pm
  • Indeed …

pale blue eyes April 15, 2013, 1:04 pm
  • SoSH and Gameday totally agree, pbe (should be 11 K today).

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:05 pm
  • If Dempster is just the innings eating guy who averages 4/game, I’ll be happy. Games like this for him – to me anyhow – are just the gravy.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:05 pm
  • Rays’ incredibly bad lineup has something to do with it, too. I mean, does anyone besides Zobrist and Longoria even remotely scare you?

Not that things couldn’t end up going wrong today, of course.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:13 pm
  • Gotta make contact on hit and run when the runner is stuck in the mud kind of fast.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:14 pm
  • Yah, the Rays lineup is bad, but they somehow always find a way to stay in things offensively.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:15 pm
  • Wow. Double-digit Ks, 2 days in a row.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:21 pm
  • Terrific outing by Dempster, with solid (non)contributions from the awful TB lineup.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:23 pm
  • Bailey to close?

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:23 pm
  • Bailey is warming.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:25 pm
  • Yah – Hanrahan out.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:28 pm
  • “they somehow always find a way to stay in things offensively”

Easier to stay in things when your starting pitching is totally legit, heh. I mean, the Sox have scored…6 runs against the TB starters this series? That’s pretty great pitching. Hellickson was awesome today. He did give up one of each variety of XBH, though.

Sox starters gave up 2 runs. Bullpen has given up 0 with 1 inning to go. I don’t believe in jinxes, like at all, but I’ll feel bad if Bailey implodes now.

Also, Gameday has died on me, so I have no idea what’s happening.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:31 pm
  • mlb.com had Tazawa in the 8th. It was Uehara.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:35 pm
  • Well here comes Bailey.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:37 pm
  • Gameday working again.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:39 pm
  • Okay.
    Lets close this out!!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:40 pm
  • mlb.com has changed Tazawa to Uehara.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:40 pm
  • Bailey’s in the mid-90s.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:41 pm
  • base hit..
Also a threat to run. Fast.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:42 pm
  • Single to start. Shit.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:42 pm
  • Jennings with a single. Don’t like that.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:42 pm
  • here comes the bunt.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:42 pm
  • Nevermind. Just stole the base on his own. No bunt needed.
    Shit

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:44 pm
  • Throw strikes, guy.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:44 pm
  • Jennings SB. Paging Cristian Vazquez.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:44 pm
  • blown save.

    Shit. Again.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:45 pm
  • Another blown save.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:45 pm
  • Fuckballs.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:45 pm
  • And JBJ throws home, allowing Zobrist to 2nd. Bailey, again, first pitch ball.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:46 pm
  • How is this possible? Two, qualified, good closers on this team and neither of them seem worth a shit thus far.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:47 pm
  • Yeah, Zobrist getting to 2nd is definitely the most infuriating aspect.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:47 pm
  • JBJ has to go to second there (only listening), but jennings was gonna score regardless.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:47 pm
  • Jeebus. 20 pitches to get an out.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:49 pm
  • Lucky there.

Hernandez with a little “keep talking shit” call to Longoria.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:49 pm
  • Big K, but Bailey has thrown 20 pitches to get an out.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:49 pm
  • Someone is going to have to show that they actually want this closing gig.

    Otherwise, Uehara??

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:50 pm
  • 2 outs on 25, one to get.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:51 pm
  • I think Uehara has something like the best K:BB ratio of all time or something? He’d be a pretty solid choice, but it’s nice that he can put out fires (like in the 9th when Hanrahan started blowing it and Farrell actually did something).

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:53 pm
  • Bailey gets out of it. Bottom 9. Paging Mark Loretta.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:53 pm
  • But the Sox supposedly don’t want Uehara throwing back-to-back days.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 1:54 pm
  • Just the one run. It’d be nice if you hit a ball 420 feet to not-dead-center today, Napoli. (If they’d like to get a run before that, that’s fine, too.)

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:54 pm
  • Nice!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:54 pm
  • Oh that’s right RE: Uehara not B2B. Makes him less than ideal as closer.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 1:55 pm
  • Nice, Constiglione with the Loretta reference as well!!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 1:58 pm
  • Come on Napoli!!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 2:01 pm
  • Actually, hitting it to the 420 marker again would do nicely at this point.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 2:02 pm
  • just a drive here, Napoli.
    That’s all I ask.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 2:03 pm
  • No walk.

Lets not set up the easy double play, here. Take a hack!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 2:04 pm
  • Napoli should’ve deposited that hanger.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 2:05 pm
  • Come on!!!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 2:08 pm
  • FUCK YEAH MIKE NAPOLI!!! FUCK YEAH!!!

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 2:08 pm
  • OH FUCK YEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

    Devine April 15, 2013, 2:08 pm
  • YEAHHHH!!!!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 2:08 pm
  • Good win there. Nice job, Napoli!!

    Brad April 15, 2013, 2:10 pm
  • 8-4. All against the AL East. Would be 9-3 and four straight series victories if Hanrahan hadn’t choked so hard recently that one inning against the O’s (or maybe he’s really hurt), but I’m still pleased as punch. 4-2 Road. 4-2 Home. Hung in there for 2 tight walkoff wins against a great-pitching Rays team.

Our offense needs Papi back and Bradley out ASAP (and still won’t be an amazing offense), but the pitching has just been amazeballs.

    Devine April 15, 2013, 2:13 pm
  • That’s a pretty awesome win. Congrats, Sox.

    attackgerbil April 15, 2013, 2:15 pm
  • Amazeballs, indeed.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2013, 2:20 pm
  • attackgerbil April 15, 2013, 3:28 pm
  • Horrible. Still haven’t heard definitive answer on whether it was planted bombs or what…

    Devine April 15, 2013, 3:45 pm
  • People are batshit crazy. Period.

    Brad April 15, 2013, 4:01 pm
  • I was going to go with “Rise and Shine, Mr. Freeman, Rise and Shine” as today’s post title. But I thought: 1) making a slightly obtuse, decade-old videogame reference, no matter how hallowed the videogame, is probably not gonna play that well with the crowd here, 2) Patriots’ Day = Freeman (free man)…kind of a stretch and 3) it’s kind of an ominous title given the circumstances in the game referenced, did not seem good to start out that way.

It seems that title feels more and more appropriate (sadly) given the events of the day. :( What the hell is wrong with people?
