Patriots’ Day means one thing to me: the Red Sox play at 8 a.m. Pacific/11 a.m. Eastern. And that is awesome.
Hellickson (a good pitcher who has done okay against the Sox) vs Dempster. Awake to comment this fine Monday?

Was at the game yesterday.
That’s my second close call with Buchholz.
As a side note, yesterday at Fenway was “meet and greet” day. All fans were allowed down onto the field to meet the team as they walked around and warmed up.
It was a great time, and great game. I missed the park, as I did not go last year at all (equal parts stubborn and anger).
I also love Patriots Day games; the work day just slides right by.
Dempster 12 pitches, 2 Ks in the top of the 1st.
Ellsbury leads off bottom 1 with a triple, scores on Victorino out. Sox did a good job against Hellickson, seeing 21 pitches.
Dempster looks pretty good.
^ obviously, the kiss of death to him right there.
And Eva goes long.
Eh, f*ck, tie game. Right as I tune in, too. Still, pretty solid for Dempster thus far. Pretty please get through this next guy?
Okay.
Blergh, I was just thinking, “Oh man, he doesn’t have a home run, he’s pretty much due.” Ka-boom.
7k
Longo’s first XBH of the season.
Yah!!!!
Salty sure can run into one sometimes. 2-1 Sox.
S. Drew double with one out. Come on, one clean base hit to bring him in.
Nope. Gomes K. Bradley flyout.
Good rake by Drew there.
Frick, lost Zobrist. Facing Longoria with runners at the corners, 2 out.
Whew.
9 K’s for Dempster. Actually 10 as I believe he struck out Longoria before the missed call at first. And then again, ump also missed that Pedroia was safe in his last at bat.
And here’s the 10th K anyway.
That’s a hell of a game for Dempster. 7 innings, 101 pitches, 2 hits (a homer and a single), 2 walks, and TEN strikeouts.
Makings of another good game here.
Indeed …
SoSH and Gameday totally agree, pbe (should be 11 K today).
If Dempster is just the innings eating guy who averages 4/game, I’ll be happy. Games like this for him – to me anyhow – are just the gravy.
Rays’ incredibly bad lineup has something to do with it, too. I mean, does anyone besides Zobrist and Longoria even remotely scare you?
Not that things couldn’t end up going wrong today, of course.
Gotta make contact on hit and run when the runner is stuck in the mud kind of fast.
Yah, the Rays lineup is bad, but they somehow always find a way to stay in things offensively.
Wow. Double-digit Ks, 2 days in a row.
Terrific outing by Dempster, with solid (non)contributions from the awful TB lineup.
Bailey to close?
Bailey is warming.
Yah – Hanrahan out.
“they somehow always find a way to stay in things offensively”
Easier to stay in things when your starting pitching is totally legit, heh. I mean, the Sox have scored…6 runs against the TB starters this series? That’s pretty great pitching. Hellickson was awesome today. He did give up one of each variety of XBH, though.
Sox starters gave up 2 runs. Bullpen has given up 0 with 1 inning to go. I don’t believe in jinxes, like at all, but I’ll feel bad if Bailey implodes now.
Also, Gameday has died on me, so I have no idea what’s happening.
mlb.com had Tazawa in the 8th. It was Uehara.
Well here comes Bailey.
Gameday working again.
Okay.
Lets close this out!!
mlb.com has changed Tazawa to Uehara.
Bailey’s in the mid-90s.
base hit..
Also a threat to run. Fast.
Single to start. Shit.
Jennings with a single. Don’t like that.
here comes the bunt.
Nevermind. Just stole the base on his own. No bunt needed.
Shit
Throw strikes, guy.
Jennings SB. Paging Cristian Vazquez.
blown save.
Shit. Again.
Another blown save.
Fuckballs.
And JBJ throws home, allowing Zobrist to 2nd. Bailey, again, first pitch ball.
How is this possible? Two, qualified, good closers on this team and neither of them seem worth a shit thus far.
Yeah, Zobrist getting to 2nd is definitely the most infuriating aspect.
JBJ has to go to second there (only listening), but jennings was gonna score regardless.
Jeebus. 20 pitches to get an out.
Lucky there.
Hernandez with a little “keep talking shit” call to Longoria.
Big K, but Bailey has thrown 20 pitches to get an out.
Someone is going to have to show that they actually want this closing gig.
Otherwise, Uehara??
2 outs on 25, one to get.
I think Uehara has something like the best K:BB ratio of all time or something? He’d be a pretty solid choice, but it’s nice that he can put out fires (like in the 9th when Hanrahan started blowing it and Farrell actually did something).
Bailey gets out of it. Bottom 9. Paging Mark Loretta.
But the Sox supposedly don’t want Uehara throwing back-to-back days.
Just the one run. It’d be nice if you hit a ball 420 feet to not-dead-center today, Napoli. (If they’d like to get a run before that, that’s fine, too.)
Nice!
Oh that’s right RE: Uehara not B2B. Makes him less than ideal as closer.
Nice, Constiglione with the Loretta reference as well!!
Come on Napoli!!
Actually, hitting it to the 420 marker again would do nicely at this point.
just a drive here, Napoli.
That’s all I ask.
No walk.
Lets not set up the easy double play, here. Take a hack!
Napoli should’ve deposited that hanger.
Come on!!!
FUCK YEAH MIKE NAPOLI!!! FUCK YEAH!!!
OH FUCK YEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!
YEAHHHH!!!!
Good win there. Nice job, Napoli!!
8-4. All against the AL East. Would be 9-3 and four straight series victories if Hanrahan hadn’t choked so hard recently that one inning against the O’s (or maybe he’s really hurt), but I’m still pleased as punch. 4-2 Road. 4-2 Home. Hung in there for 2 tight walkoff wins against a great-pitching Rays team.
Our offense needs Papi back and Bradley out ASAP (and still won’t be an amazing offense), but the pitching has just been amazeballs.
That’s a pretty awesome win. Congrats, Sox.
Amazeballs, indeed.
Reports of explosions at finish line of the Boston Marathon.
Horrible. Still haven’t heard definitive answer on whether it was planted bombs or what…
People are batshit crazy. Period.
I was going to go with “Rise and Shine, Mr. Freeman, Rise and Shine” as today’s post title. But I thought: 1) making a slightly obtuse, decade-old videogame reference, no matter how hallowed the videogame, is probably not gonna play that well with the crowd here, 2) Patriots’ Day = Freeman (free man)…kind of a stretch and 3) it’s kind of an ominous title given the circumstances in the game referenced, did not seem good to start out that way.
It seems that title feels more and more appropriate (sadly) given the events of the day. :( What the hell is wrong with people?
