Rise and Shine: Sox-A’s Gamer I

Paul SF’s Tuesday itinerary:

  • 4 a.m. (Central): Wake up
  • 4:15: Shower
  • 4:30: Shave
  • 4:45: Get dressed
  • 5:00: Pour a bowl of cereal
  • 5:07: Immerse myself in another glorious roller-coaster ride — at times magnificent, at times hellish — that will take me through the long, hot summer months, through the birth of my first child, and hopefully through October.

Do the Red Sox have a dynasty in the making? Do they have what it takes to defend their division, league and world titles? Will Daisuke Matsuzaka improve or devolve? Will the young guns and the young bat make us forget about the rotation the Sox could have had?

They are unanswered questions; they will remain so for the better part of six months. But the answers begin unfolding this morning, as the 108th season of Red Sox baseball opens in the Land of the Rising Sun — while the sun rises on Boston, Texas and the rest of Red Sox Nation.

Baseball is here. Take solace, cheer and comment away, yet again!

  • Well, I’m home from work, time to head to bed, grab four hours of sleep, then – much liek you – get up and get ready for Openign Day!
I know its broadcast on ESPN.. will I still be able to get it on MLB.tv? I’d love to go watch it from the local cafe so I’ll have ready access to caffiene.
After the game, its BACK to bed so I can be ok (with the help of copius Red Bull) to work at 3pm.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 12:03 am
  • I believe it is on MLB.tv, Dio. The Red Sox homepage does not lie. ;-)

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 12:06 am
  • Thanks!
Also, Paul, first pitch its at 6:05, not 5:05!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 12:09 am
  • Ok I JUST noticed you wrote central. I’m a moron. Im also tired

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 12:13 am
  • 5:05 Am CST
    My itinerary:
    4:30 central wake up
    4:35 take shower
    4:45 get out of shower
4:50 start making scramby southwest eggs, oatmeals and a piece of wholewheat toast
    5:05 Watch the game
5:08 call every one of my sleeping yankee/cub/mets fan friends and let them know it’s opening freaking day…
then I am going to turn to the glory of HD baseball, and not worry about anything until I have to head into work at noon, were I will watch baseball on my laptop and so some work…yeah I love my job

    Anonymous March 25, 2008, 12:16 am
  • I suppose I should wake up at 6:00. I am a baseball fan after all. Doesn’t mean I can’t root for the ‘scrappy underdog’ Oakland A’s though!

    AndrewYF March 25, 2008, 12:26 am
  • Hmm, I’m going to leave work at 6 p.m., grab a bowl of ramen and some gyoza, saunter into Tokyo Dome and give 800 yen to the first beer girl who wanders by.
Of course, for the rest of the season I’ll be getting up at 7 every saturday/sunday to watch whatever game is on, but for now all I can say to you in the States is:
“Sac up, dudes, and enjoy the game.”

Jim in Tokyo March 25, 2008, 12:35 am
  • Awake. Showered. Realized the cafe that is actually worht spending 4 hours in isn’t open until 6:30am. Deciding to just go to Sheetz and retreive a delicious breakfast sammich or two and bring them back.
If you arent pumped yet, try goign to http://www.outincenterfield.com and watching the video Texas Gal has posted. Instant Pumpation!
    Ok that sounded kinda dirty.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 4:57 am
  • I’m up. Had a TERRIBLE night sleeping. Partly excitement, partly being sick. Yuck. Off to shower, then I’ll post lineups.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 5:15 am
  • I’m back. Food is good. Latte is TERRIBLE.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 5:43 am
  • WHY IS ESPN2 SCARING ME? The pregame stuff isnt on yet!!! MLB.tv wont start either! PANIC

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 5:46 am
  • They never start until the top of the hour, yes?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 5:50 am
  • True. I wasn’t thinkign rationally, Paul. Im all wound up. I got maybe an hour of sleep.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 5:52 am
  • I love that XM has a 24/7 baseball channel, but they get need some better analysts…
    Aaand the pregame is on!!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 5:55 am
  • Here we go. So fired up it doesn’t even matter that I had to get up early, I was so excited I couldn’t sleep anyway.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 5:57 am
  • Man, no joke, Lock. I woke up at least once every hour…
This is the first time I’ve listened to a full Sox game on the radio since the 2000 season. How fun! (We forewent cable this year for an XM subscription). I’ve missed Joe Castiglione…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 5:58 am
  • Must not crack a beer, must not crack a beer, must not crack a beer….

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:00 am
  • Curt Schilling predicted 7 IP, 1 ER, 8 Ks from Matsuzaka today. I’ll join by predicting a solo HR from Ortiz, a 2-run shot by Drew, and a 5-1 win.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:01 am
  • You lose Paul. Drew scratched with back tightness.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:03 am
  • Arrgggh
I guess bowling didn’t work out this offseason…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:05 am
  • So it’s Brandon Moss batting sixth, instead of Drew. Not the best start to the season…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:06 am
  • Here. We. Go.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:09 am
  • Very late scratch. No one seems to know what happened. EEI saying Drew was warming up with no apparent trouble just before the lineups were announced.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:09 am
  • I’m betting its only a ‘for a day or two’ thing, Paul. Drew will be in the lineup April 1st, if not tommorrow

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:10 am
  • First pitch of 2008:
    A strike to Pedroia.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:10 am
  • BASE HIT DUSTIN!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:11 am
  • Hey hey, single to open the season for Pedey!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:11 am
  • Yeah Dusty, that infield looks FAST!

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:11 am
  • A’s botch a double play ball and barely get Youks. Papi is up!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:12 am
  • First pitch David? Dammit

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:13 am
  • Phooey. Pop up.
Time for the new, improved Manny!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:13 am
  • Red Sox are swinging early against Blanton. Only eight pitches, even with giving up the single…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:14 am
  • “it just means he’s due” Shut up, Phillips. You don’t understand stats.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:14 am
  • Manny drives it, but foul.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:15 am
  • What a crappy series of at bats. This is gonna SUCK.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:15 am
  • I’m kind of glad I don’t have to hear the ESPN commentary, as much as I miss the pretty pictures.
    That’s the inning. :-P

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:15 am
  • Heh, XM is airing the Japanese radio feed of the game, as well as feeds from both the Red Sox and A’s networks. That’s pretty cool!
    Big cheers for Daisuke…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:17 am
  • One pitch, one out.
27-pitch perfect game, here we come!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:19 am
  • First pitch ground out for Daisuke

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:19 am
  • Orrrr not. 1-0 A’s. Crap.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:20 am
  • SON OF A BITCH!
And punch the god damn ESPN guy for using ‘Sayonara’

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:20 am
  • On the bright side, the Sox have lost six of their last seven openers — including 2004 and 2007.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:21 am
  • Oops.
Looks like the Japanese media that predicted a perfect game for Matsuzaka lost their bets pretty quick.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:21 am
  • Now behind Barton 3-1.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:22 am
  • OH for craps sake

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:22 am
  • And he walks him. Not looking good thus far.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:22 am
  • Ten pitches, seven balls, one home run.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:23 am
  • There we go, two straight strikes.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:25 am
  • Now a HBP. This is a NIGHTMARE

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:25 am
  • HBP. #@$%^&#$%$@

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:25 am
  • This is ugly, I have better control.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:26 am
  • CURSE WORDS!!!!!!!!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:26 am
  • Heh. GameDay is ahead of the radio.
    Good God, wild pitch.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:26 am
  • JESUS!!! Come on.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:27 am
  • You don’t get the calls when you show no ability to call strikes…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:27 am
  • ANOTHER walk?
Holy cow. Someone pimpslap Curt Schilling for jinxing Dice-K

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:28 am
  • Or throw them. Whatever…
    And he walks him.
So what happens when you try to get a pitcher to throw more off-speed stuff when he can’t throw any of it for strikes? This is not good.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:28 am
  • 20 pitches. 13 balls.
Hey, a strike! Why are A’s hitters swinging at all?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:29 am
  • Wow. Now he’s being squeezed. Had you actually thrown, y’know, more strikes, you’d have got that call.
*sigh* run in, but we got an out.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:30 am
  • Wow, that was a close play at first.

    AndrewYF March 25, 2008, 6:30 am
  • Well, groundout scores the run after Matsuzaka gets robbed of Strike 3. Couldn’t throw home for the force?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:30 am
  • THROW A STRIKE!!!!!!!!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:32 am
  • Just throw strikes, Daisuke. Trust your defense.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:32 am
  • Again, why are the A’s swinging at anything he throws? Not that I mind…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:32 am
  • We need somebody up that just doesn’t give a crap, Snyder?

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:32 am
  • GOT HIM!
    Thank GOD thats over

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:33 am
  • THANK GOD!!!
    Now, get them back boys.
Not only that, but I needed quick innings so I can watch as much as possible before work.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:33 am
  • Finally! Strikeout!
So instead of a 27-pitch perfect game, it takes 30 pitches just to get out of the first. Not good at all. This was end-of-2007 Daisuke, and I was hoping we could avoid that.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:34 am
  • As a Yankee fan, I’m enjoying the game thus far, not necessarily because Dice-K is struggling, but hell, it’s a meaningful 2008 baseball game. How great is this?
*goes back to hating the Red Sox*

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:34 am
  • Ugh. I dont think I can do this again tommorrow. I need some sleep.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:35 am
  • Well hey, that was Dice’s patented “one bad inning”. He’ll likely be lights-out the rest of the game.

    AndrewYF March 25, 2008, 6:35 am
  • Base hit Lowell, tying home run by Moss. Make it happen, boys!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:35 am
  • MIKEY!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:35 am
  • There we go Mikey!!! Nice base hit.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:35 am
  • Hey, Lowell comes through! Let’s go, Moss!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:36 am
  • I know what your doing, Andrew. Don’t make me come over there. ;-)

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:36 am
  • Joe Blanton is terrible when pitching on the road, and considering how far from home he is, I think he’ll get rocked.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:37 am
  • Heh, bet no one would have predicted Brandon Moss would get the Opening Day start.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:37 am
  • Heh, caught me Dio. Any news on why Drew isn’t playing?

    AndrewYF March 25, 2008, 6:37 am
  • tightness in his back.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:38 am
  • Forceout. :-P Up to Varitek…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:38 am
  • Drew has back stiffness.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:38 am
  • DAMMIT Tek

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:39 am
  • Man, Tek just looks old and tired.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:39 am
  • Double play. Gargh.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:39 am
  • haha, great aquafina commercial

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:40 am
  • So Blanton has 20 pitches through two innings, while Matsuzaka has 30 through one.
This feels too much like early September for me.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:40 am
  • Yeah, that commercial was awesome.
As for the game, it looks like LOB nightmare is returning again. We really needed to stretch that inning to give Daisuke time to get his head together.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:41 am
  • At this rate, he’ll be done by the third or fourth inning. I’m assuming they’ll limit his count.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:42 am
  • Or, rather, mid September.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:42 am
  • Single on the first pitch. *sigh*

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:43 am
  • Wow, Matsuzaka’s getting zero calls.

    AndrewYF March 25, 2008, 6:43 am
  • You could play an entire separate baseball game in that foul territory.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:43 am
  • hey! an out! Neat!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:44 am
  • Phew. One down.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:44 am
  • Holy crap! Breaking ball for a strike! *jaw drop*

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:45 am
  • yea that pitch around the knees isn’t getting any umpire love.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:45 am
  • DP would be excellent here.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:46 am
  • Billy Beane! I have such a man crush on him
Not again.. starts out 0-2 and now its 3-2.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:47 am
  • My head hurts. Of course, my head’s been hurting all night, but this isn’t helping…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:47 am
  • Nice K.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:47 am
  • K, but stolen bade.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:47 am
  • Strikeout, but Tek allows the SB.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:48 am
  • Base, I mean. Had Teks throw not been high, we may have had him

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:48 am
  • Ahead 0-2 again. Put him away!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:48 am
  • i’d like to see billy beane freak out in the stands, maybe punch a fan or two.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:49 am
  • wow. WAY outside there

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:49 am
  • Man, those beer girls would distract me all game. There are some things we can certainly learn from our baseball brothers in Japan.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:50 am
  • I’d love to see Billy Beane freak out and punch Joe Morgan

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:50 am
  • it’s so weird to see the yahoo fantasy lineup in effect right now.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:51 am
  • Back to 2-2. Up to 47 pitches. 47

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:51 am
  • For those on radio, the beer girls are literally wearing school girl outfits with keg backpacks.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:51 am
  • *sigh*
    *sigh*
    I got nothing. Just…
    *sigh*

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:52 am
  • Yeah, that’d be excellent. If he punched Steve Phillips I’d be pretty happy as well.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:53 am
  • 50 pitches, only half for strikes.
    Now 51/25…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:53 am
  • Joe Morgan and Steve Phillips.
Did Satan himself come up with that tandem?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:54 am
  • am I dead? Is this a nightmare?

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:55 am
  • If it weren’t for A’s batters, the A’s would have like a 4-0 lead right now.
ANOTHER walk! This is amazing. Is someone warming?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:55 am
  • freddy krueger in the pen.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:55 am
  • I was going to say that the A’s were swinging at balls, but that doesn’t seem to matter much because Matsuzaka never throws a strike. They can swing twice and just wait on four other pitches.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:56 am
  • Cust VERY much an Oakland style player.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:56 am
  • Nice, Julian is just what we need and I’m not kidding.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:58 am
  • Well, Beane punchign out Phillips wouldnt be as.. awesomely appropriate as him punching out Joe “I hate Moneyball evern though I Havent read it” Morgan
    HUGE K!!!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 6:58 am
  • NICE! He needed that, big time. Now, LET’S GET THOSE RUNS BACK!!!

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 6:58 am
  • Couldn’t have been a strike. Cust would have swung. He would have missed, but he still would have swung.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 6:58 am
  • Strike 3!
60 pitches in 2 innings. That’s not a way to pitch deep into the game. He may only have two more innings in him — and only if he actually manages to retire more than one batter in a row.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 6:59 am
  • Runs please

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:00 am
  • Maybe Tavarez can come in, walk off the mound, climb up to the ESPN booth, punch out Morgan and Phillips, and then resume pitching as if nothing happened…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:00 am
  • If this wasn’t the A’s, the game would be 8-0.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:00 am
  • I think they said they have him on a 90 pitch count, but that might have just been speculation by the broadcasters. Not too sure.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:01 am
  • Morgan isnt there, I dont think, Paul. I jsut mentioned him because of his dislike for Biilly Beane who is a god.
    Blanton pitching very well

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:02 am
  • Oh, tough on Ellsbury. Same pitch Dice K threw to Cust.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:02 am
  • LUGO!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:02 am
  • Lugo with another hit. One of these days, we need to start converting these baserunners into runs. Maybe try to steal a base here?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:03 am
  • Hmm, I forget who is commentating with Phillips, but I remember thinking it was just about the worst combo I could think of…
Oh, it’s John “painted sock” Thorne.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:04 am
  • Lugo is going to rebound this year. No way he’s as bad as he was last year (even though I bought his BR stat page in order to poke fun at him).

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:04 am
  • Damn, I though he may have had that there. *sighs* I wish I coud start drinking

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:05 am
  • Note to Dale Arnold: Don’t use “launches” if it’s not a home run.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:05 am
  • They’re pretty terrible. I’m a huge Yankee fan, but I do enjoy listening to Don and Rem Dawg. I went to school at UMASS and they made the Sox games a lot of fun to watch despite allegiances.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:06 am
  • And Lugo had a solid second half. I think that intestinal parasite hurt him a lot more than people realized at the time.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:06 am
  • YOuk with the first really good at-bat against Blanton and beats the throw.
    Papi?

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:07 am
  • Infield hit, Youk maybe robbed of a double. Ortiz up… Give us the lead, Big Papi!!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:08 am
  • Ortiz has a 1.133 OPS in 12 AB against Blanton.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:08 am
  • Hopefully that long AB by Youk helped Ortiz see enough pitches tog et a handle on one…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:08 am
  • I hate the shift.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:09 am
  • God damn shift.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:10 am
  • Damn shift. I don’t care what Bill James says. ;-)

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:10 am
  • lol, the shift should be an illegal play. jason giambi would have 200 hits.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:10 am
  • One pitch… one out. Maybe different than last time that happened?

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:13 am
  • Another one-pitch, one-out. Let’s build on that.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:13 am
  • Ok, good start, make it quick.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:13 am
  • I agree with whoever said this before, but thank God this is the A’s. Wouldn’t even be a game right now if this were the Yankees.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:13 am
  • Nice, keep it going.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:14 am
  • Two outs in five pitches!!! It’s a miracle!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:14 am
  • It’s a Christmas Miracle.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:15 am
  • This is bullshit–ESPN2 isn’t showing anything, it’s just blank. WHAT THE FUCK?
At least Daisuke looks like he’s settled down.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:15 am
  • Um… where’d ESPN go?

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:17 am
  • 70 Pitches after 2.2 innings? Looks like Snyder or Tavarez will be pitching some long relief today.
    Daisuke issues his 5th walk.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:17 am
  • Matsuzaka hit 90 on one of his fastballs earlier in this at-bat. Not sure if that’s what he’s sitting at, or whether that’s his peak. If it’s his peak, that’s troubling.
    FIVE walks!!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:18 am
  • Apparently, according to Survivinggrady.com, Comcast is having an error showing the game too. At least I’m not the only one.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:18 am
  • Well Lugo leapt to snare a line drive and end the inning, for those who lost ESPN2…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:19 am
  • Don’t worry Paul, I’m sure him peaking at 90 is just a result of less Spring Training. Give him a week or two and I think (hope) he’ll be okay.
I’m watching the gameday… is he throwing more breaking pitches than strikes?

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:20 am
  • good god, it’s bud selig.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:21 am
  • Thanks Paul, appreciate the extra information. My ESPN2 has been out all morning, and Comcast customers are experiencing the same thing, so I guess it’s a large portion of the nation.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:21 am
  • Here’s a fun stat:
Matsuzaka is one walk away from tying the Red Sox Opening Day record by a starter, set by Bill Monbouquette in 1961 and tied by Roger Clemens in 1996. They both lost.
Three other times an Opening Day starter for the Red Sox has walked five batters — Luis Tiant in 1973 and 1974, and Dennis Eckersley in 1979. The Red Sox won all three of those games (and Eck pitched seven shutout inning).

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:22 am
  • Shut him up already.

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:23 am
  • The word over at RSN.net is that a lot of people are out, Direct TV, Comcast, etc, all over the country.
I’m on Comcast in Boston and it’s still on, just crossing my fingers it stays that way.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:23 am
  • Manny flies out to right, 3-0 to Lowell.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:23 am
  • I’m in Seattle and the game has been coming through no problems (thus far).

    CHEA SON March 25, 2008, 7:24 am
  • Now full count.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:24 am
  • So in other words Paul, if Daisuke stays at 5 walks he’ll win, but if he walks one more then he’ll lose? Well a 2-0 deficit is far from insurmountable! His 2nd and 3rd innings were relatively routine at least.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:25 am
  • Ugh, nothing again.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:25 am
  • Why didn’t we have Coco starting in the outfield over Moss?

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:26 am
  • Ugh, Sox go in order.
On the other hand, Matsuzaka is unlikely to reach the depths provided by Pedro Martinez in 2002 — 3 IP 7 ER 2 BB 4 K — or Roger Clemens in 1994 — 4.2 IP 8 ER 3 BB 6 K.
Funny that the Sox pitchers with the worst Opening Day game scores are the two best pitchers I’ve ever seen put on a Sox uniform.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:27 am
  • Matsuzaka halfway to tying a record. Yayy! :-(

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:28 am
  • Nope, Sweeney pops out.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:29 am
  • Nice, another quick out, then two strikes, keep it up Dice.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:29 am
  • Nice K.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:30 am
  • Daisuke getting a high called strike three! He’s at 81 pitches after 3.2 innings. He might get through the 5th! *knock on wood*

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:30 am
  • COME BACK TV!
Wait no.. Stay away if it mean Daisuke will pitch half-way decent

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:31 am
  • If Daisuke is lifted after this inning (and that looks likely), he’ll be just the fifth Sox Opening Day starter since 1956 unable to get an out in the fifth inning. Jim Lonborg (1969) is the only one who couldn’t finish the third.
All these stats are from 1956 and later, btw.
Hey, strikeout! He’s getting better, seems like.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:31 am
  • 123! Ok, now, score some damn runs.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:31 am
  • A quick inning! He might start the fifth after all!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:31 am
  • Two hits through 4, not bad… until you realize his WHIP is 2.0. (Two hits, a hit batter and five walks)

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:32 am
  • My god Tek, what the hell was that?

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:34 am
  • Hey, those of us with Comcast issues need updates (gameday aint movin either)

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:35 am
  • If he makes it through five with no further damage, Matsuzaka actually could get a quality start (by game score, anyway): 54.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:35 am
  • GameDay’s working for me. Tek struck out, Ellsbury down 1-2.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:36 am
  • Tek struck out, worst swing I have seen in a long time, ball was way low out of the zone.
    Jacoby up, 1-2

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:36 am
  • Gameday is working for me too. Ellsbury fouls a few off, Blanton up to 62 pitches.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:37 am
  • Jacoby, 2-2

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:37 am
  • Ellsbury battling, lots of fouls. 2-2 the count.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:37 am
  • Full count.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:38 am
  • Count is full now. Come on, Jacoby! Spark something!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:38 am
  • Ground out.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:38 am
  • Blech. 3-1 putout.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:38 am
  • Ugh ugh ugh

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:39 am
  • It looks like Dice-BB is being Dice-BB. 5 walks in 4+ innings. The only problem is that the A’s have gotten 2 runs so far and the Sawx could still come back and win.

    yf2k March 25, 2008, 7:39 am
  • It’s encouraging to see Ellsbury fouling off a lot of pitches, even though he’s been struggling in spring training.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:39 am
  • Lugo, in a stunning turn of events, goes from having a .299 OBP to having a 1.000 OBP…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:39 am
  • Junk, Lugo ground out, still nothing.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:40 am
  • Exactly yf2k, it’s a good thing this is the A’s. A good offense would be up 8-0 right now.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:41 am
  • Thanks YF2K for that recap of the game we are all watching.
1-2-3 go the Sox. *sigh* Lugo’s OBP down to .500.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:41 am
  • So is it Matsuzaka in the fifth?
It is! The record is still within reach!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:42 am
  • Dice-BB? Oh, I get it, haha, that’s clever, how you used the BB instead of the K, man, you need to take that show on the road!

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:43 am
  • Strikeout! Dice-KKKKK. He’s looking a lot better.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:43 am
  • Barton K’s on four pitches! Come on Daisuke, two more quick outs and you could go into the 6th.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:43 am
  • Good god.. ESPN keeps comign back to show this damn Aquavelvet commercial (and this time two others) and then goign out again

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:44 am
  • Good job getting ahead of Cust. That’s the key to every inning since the 1st–getting ahead of batters.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:45 am
  • Opening Day Sox record for Ks? 11, by Pedro (1998, 2000) and Clemens (1988).
Matsuzaka gets jobbed. Should have been No. 6.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:45 am
  • Cust down on strikes! He officially has more K’s than BB’s now. Need a quick out here.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:46 am
  • Up to six Ks now, as Cust swings and misses! A nice recovery after a terrible first two innings — 34 pitches in 2.2 innings after 60 in 2.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:46 am
  • Wait, that wasn’t K #6 Paul? Gameday says it was.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:46 am
  • Ahhhh. Brown grounds out. 95 pitches after 5, he should come out for the 6th.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:47 am
  • Wow, 60 pitches in 2 followed by 35 pitches in 3. I can’t imagine he’ll be back for the sixth.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:47 am
  • YAY! Five innins!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:48 am
  • PaulSF. A bit testy (or nervous) about this game, are you?

    yf2k March 25, 2008, 7:49 am
  • Matsuzaka had the K looking, Ath, but the ump didn’t see it that way. Cust was very obliging by ending the at bat the next pitch.
Dice-K has the eighth-most strikeouts by a Sox Opening Day starter (since 1956) — and the third-most walks.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:49 am
  • You know, when it’s all said and done, the 3.60 ERA, 6Ks, only two hits, this is going to look like a nice outing from Matsuzaka, other than the 5 walks of course. He’s done now it looks like.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:50 am
  • yf2k, I don’t know about you but I consider Opening Day(s) to be ones in which I don’t harrass even my nemisis. Unelss we’re playign each other. Its opening day and should be.. pure

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:50 am
  • Dusty with the opposite field double off the wall!
    LET’S GO BOYS!!!!!!

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:51 am
  • Lead-off double by the rookie of the year! GREAT way to start off the 6th.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:51 am
  • DUSTIN! ROCK MY SOCKS! AND MY SOX!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:51 am
  • A bit testy when YFs decide to come into a Sox game thread and throw barbs around for no apparent reason, except to be jerks. We don’t mind cross pollenation, so to speak, but there’s no quicker way to piss people off than to start showing how clever you are with other players’ nicknames in the middle of the other team’s gamer.
Pedroia with the double off Buck’s glove! Here we go, Sox!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:52 am
  • Right now I’m imagining a lot of loud Japanese people screaming and cheering. Apparently the Tokyo Dome is loud as balls.
    3-0 to Youk!

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:52 am
  • Youkilis walks! Ortiz is up as the go-ahead run! Let’s go Papi!!!!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:53 am
  • 4 pitch walk to Youk, 2 men on, no out, the best 3/4 combo in the game coming up.
    HERE WE GO!!!

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:53 am
  • Yeah you had BETTER visit the mound, coach! David-bleeping-Ortiz at bat with two on.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:54 am
  • The David Ortiz bobblehead I got for Xmas is officially in my hands being rubbed like some voodoo doll.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:55 am
  • Blanton seemingly rattled by this turn of events…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:55 am
  • WHats the coutn on Ortiz???? WHATS GOING ON?

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:56 am
  • That’s funny, PaulSF. What you have described has happened many a time–only with SFs being the jerks on Yanks’s gamers.

    yf2k March 25, 2008, 7:56 am
  • nice. i had no idea you all would be up. 5 am my time. tomorrow will be hell.

    sf rod March 25, 2008, 7:56 am
  • being rubbed like some voodoo doll
Not only is that disturbing, but don’t you think it could be distracting for Papi? ;-)

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:56 am
  • Full count to Ortiz, then he fouls one off, now in play (outs).

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:57 am
  • BAseballl comes back.. as Papi flies out DAMMIT
    Come on Manny

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:57 am
  • YF2K, run along now.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:57 am
  • Examples, YF2K?
    Dammit!
    Come on, Manny!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:57 am
  • TIE GAME!!! MANNY!!!!!!! 2-run double!!!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 7:58 am
  • YEAH MANNY!!!!!! ALL TIED UP!

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 7:58 am
  • MANNY!!!!! TIE GAME!!!!!!!
Let’s get Daisuke the Win BOYS!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 7:58 am
  • Apparently it was Paul, since he popped out.
Just ignore yf2k, don’t let him bother you. Typical “woah is us Yankees fans” type of thing lately.
    MANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH BABY!

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:58 am
  • Lowell’s mighty .500 average is at the plate!
    God I love small samples.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 7:59 am
  • I don’t deny there may have been isolated incidents in both gamers, especially early in the season, but at some point last year, the sides here reached a truce that comments from both fanbases are welcome in all gamers, but that it’s just not a good idea to poke the bear in the game threads. Too many volatile emotions running around.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:00 am
  • Lowell K’s. Can we get Coco pinch hitting for Moss?

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:00 am
  • Ohhh, Lowell. Sad face.
A big hit from Brandon Moss would be so awesome.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:00 am
  • SOX LEAD!!!!! BOOYA!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:01 am
  • I’d rather Moss than Coco.
    BASE HIT!!! 3-2 SOX!!!!!!

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:01 am
  • DAISUKE HAS THE LEAD BABY!

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:01 am
  • I LOVE BASEBALL!!!!!
    MANNY WITH THE WHEELS!!!!

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 8:01 am
  • Pick a random game, PaulSF. There are so many, like the gloating about the bug game with Job(a) last year.

    yf2k March 25, 2008, 8:01 am
  • Brandon Moss says: “Screw you, Atheose!” ;-)

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:02 am
  • See ya Blanton. We enjoyed your stay.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:02 am
  • Hey Paul, if Moss hit that just to spite me then hell yes.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:02 am
  • Dice can win this game, amazing.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 8:02 am
  • According to gameday, Alan Embree replaced joe Blanton, and then Alan Embree replaced Alan Embree. And then the coach visited the mound again.
    Hooray internets.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:04 am
  • Here’s the link to that gamer. My quick scan shows the Sox fans to be respectful and interested in talking about the game, except for old “friend” B-RAW, who has been banned – and was before that thread, as I recall.
    http://yanksfansoxfan.typepad.com/ysfs/2007/10/magician-and-al.html

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:04 am
  • Sue me, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Alan Embree.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:06 am
  • lemme guess, the game was removed from espn2 because bpud heard [incorrectly] that the game wasn’t sold out so there’s a blackout in part of the country…i’m guessing that direct tv doesn’t have it’s baseball package in gear either…i thought bpud wanted us to get all excited about playing ball in a foreign country…can he be impeached?

    dc March 25, 2008, 8:07 am
  • Arnold and Castiglione unimpressed by the home plate ump.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:07 am
  • Varitek looked good this spring, but not so much today.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:08 am
  • I agree with you Paul, same soft spot here for Embree.
In other news, Tek looks like JUNK.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 8:09 am
  • So will Daisuke be out for the sixth? I’d almost rather leave it to the bullpen, even though he did look very good in the fourth and fifth.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:09 am
  • Snyder in for an inning or two.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:10 am
  • Nope, he’s gone. So he’s in line for the win, believe it or not. Funny game, this baseball.
    Snyder in…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:10 am
  • Come on Snyder, hold this lead buddy.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 8:11 am
  • That.. was an odd hit. Snuck through

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:12 am

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:12 am

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:13 am
  • what an awesome thing to wake up to! A’s dinger!!!

    sam-YF March 25, 2008, 8:13 am
  • FUCK ME, homerun.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:13 am
  • Ug. So much for Daisuke getting the win.
Seriously. Stop with the Sayonara call. I’l lhurt you

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:14 am
  • I’ve always liked Snyder, but I’m not sure what his use is with this ballclub. Give me Bryan Corey instead.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:14 am
  • No W for Matsuzaka.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 8:14 am
  • dc- your right on the direct tv call.

    sf rod March 25, 2008, 8:17 am
  • “So… pissed… off…”

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:17 am
  • Three easy outs — too bad they weren’t to the first three batters of the inning…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:18 am
  • Not too worried, only down by one. We will get this back, come on boys.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 8:19 am
  • Base hit JACOBY!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:21 am
  • I will *NEVER* tire of Papelbon doing that jump

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:22 am

    sam-YF March 25, 2008, 8:22 am

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:22 am
  • lugo’s in mid season form.

    sf rod March 25, 2008, 8:23 am
  • Sam – SHut up. cause the Yankees dont get any praise. Cause ESPN hasnt been praising Beane. Just shut up.
Lugo – Why do you HATE me?

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:23 am
  • Nope. Double play. Grrrr…
How do you hit into a double play with Ellsbury and Lugo as baserunners??

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:23 am
  • Wow, Dio. Harsh much?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:24 am
  • Ugh, that was not what the Sox needed.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:24 am
  • wow Dio. Relax, i just made a simple comment and you tell me to shut up twice? Im just commenting on what i am hearing

    sam-YF March 25, 2008, 8:24 am

    Exactly. That was pathetic.

  • No kidding Paul, I would have bet a month’s salary that Ellsbury-Lugo wouldn’t be a DP combo. Ellsbury should have stolen 2nd–Suzuki has a weak arm.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:25 am
  • Sam, I will be a little nicer about it, but Dio is right, ESPN does just as much ass kissing of the Yankees, you just don’t notice it because you’re a Yankee fan.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 8:25 am
  • But that was a Morgan-liek comment. Baseless in fact… or at least ignoring a bunch of other supportign details. This broadcast ALONE, Billy Beane has been gettign JUST as much praise as the Sox. And heaven forbid people talk about a team that JUST won a World Series as being good.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:27 am
  • However, I shouldnt have said ‘shut up’ that was rude and I apologise

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:27 am
  • sam- every news source on the planet talked about yankees all off season. pettitte this, clemens that, giambi this, sheffield that, grimsly this, knobloch that. none of us bitched. maybe they could just talk about the sox for a few days.

    sf rod March 25, 2008, 8:28 am

Lopez coming in. Is this “use crappy relievers” week, and I missed the memo?

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:29 am
  • World Champs always get obscene amounts of praise. Remember the Cards? Remember all the praise ECKSTEIN of all peopel got? Or god.. Ozzie Guillen aka worst manager in MLB? He was talked about like the second coming

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:30 am
  • And here we see Lopez being used to get a lefty out — which we know he’s not very good at doing…

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 8:30 am
  • Lopez against a lefty. This’ll end badly.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:30 am
  • I never said the Yankees dont get praised too!
I just turned on the broadcast and they are barely talking about the game. Just how gutty DiceK’s performance was and how young the sox are. Its more a comment on how crappy the announcers are. I respect the sox, everyone relax.

    sam-YF March 25, 2008, 8:31 am
  • I feel like this game is going to be a microcosm of the season, with the Sox starters not able to go deep into games (Dice-K, Clay, and Lester is a recipe for far too many Kyle Snyder 6th inning appearances) and the ‘pen getting absolutely overworked. The bats will have to save this team, I think.

    SF March 25, 2008, 8:31 am
  • Except for Youk standing in JUST The right spot.
Warning: My lappy is about to die and I cant plug it in as Im upstairs and the puppy will eat the cable… so if I stop posting thats why.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:40 am
  • I don’t think so, Sam. I think Oakland is ‘home’ for both games.
    Dammit David. Tough Game, man.

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:41 am

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:45 am

That last pitch of the at bat, I was telling him ‘don’t give a fastball outside corner’, I was sure Manny was looking for it. Guess he was guessing another splitter.

    AndrewYF March 25, 2008, 8:46 am

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:46 am
  • Everyone (SFs, that is) get used to this type of game. We are going to see a LOT of these this year.

    SF March 25, 2008, 8:47 am
  • what a bummer not getting to see this game on tv….someone will have to tell bpud that there are fans outside of the nesn area too, and to get his boys over at direct tv to get on board with these games that start the season before the start of the season [huh?]…anyway, sorry guys, i’m afraid this’ll be the first of a number of bpud rants for me this season…i’m apologizing in advance…as for the fighting about who’s more obnoxious, yf’s on sox gamers, or sf’s on yank gamers, i’d say it’s a tie…plenty of both….and for the even less important concern about whether espn has more yankee fans or red sox fans, who cares?…they tend to have a slight northeast bias for most sports which includes the yanks and sox, and let’s face it how many folks would tune in if the focus was on [insert other teams' names] rather than recent winners like the sox, giants, celtics [maybe], patriots, [cough] yanks, not to mention the juicy scandals that follow these teams [spygate, roidgate]…fun stuff

You mean where our bullpen gives up a lead? I wouldn’t be so negative about that.
Now, if you’re talking about us only getting three runs off 9 baserunners? Then I agree with you.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:51 am

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 8:51 am

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 8:51 am

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 9:00 am
  • atheose:
I am referring to seeing the bullpen for three or four innings, with the bats really needing to rescue the team.
See the prediction thread, I am not negative on the Sox (pick them to win the division in a playoff game over the Yanks), but I am concerned about whether or not the rotation can keep the bullpen from being overworked. Call me a pragmatist or a realist, I guess, not a pessimist.

    SF March 25, 2008, 9:00 am
  • Maybe I should keep listening on the futon… That seemed to work.

    Paul SF March 25, 2008, 9:01 am
  • Don’t worry SF, I got used to your realism last year on the threads. I don’t blame you for your frustration.
    Oki in.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 9:02 am
  • Well, SF, you do have a bit of history being a pessimist, or at the least, a pess-a-realist.

    LocklandSF March 25, 2008, 9:03 am
  • Hey hey hey! *I* am the pessimist here!

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 9:04 am
  • Oki is nasty

    Dionysus March 25, 2008, 9:05 am
  • Gah, I am not frustrated, Atheose! In fact, last year taught me a great deal about not feeling negative when there are at-bats left to be had. As we see today, the bats are strong enough to keep this team in almost any game, the pitching decent enough as well. They might win a lot of games and I am not about to give up in the seventh inning of a one run game.
But is my outlook that crazy? Two rookies in the rotation, Wakefield, Dice-K too. It’s not negativity – it is my one serious worry about this team, that the bullpen will be a lot more tired come August/September.

    SF March 25, 2008, 9:06 am
  • Oki with a nice K.

    Atheose March 25, 2008, 9:06 am

    i love this town.

  • Heh. Glad to see nothing much has changed around here: Dio having heart attacks, YFs sniping from the sidelines, JD with back issues, Tavarez jokes, Manny being you know… From reading the angst-filled thread, you’d think it was mid-August and the Sox were in the midst of a steep two-week slump. Love it.

  • one other thing that hasnt changed. Hudson taking unsubstantiated digs at YFs…
