Rivalry! Jets-Pats Sox-Yanks Gamer IV

We’re not sure how YF so badly missed the boat on this one, referring to the Giants and Eagles’ "rivalry" in the previous game thread as opposed to our two cities’ respective teams (this isn’t Yanksfan vs. Philsfan, at last check), who are going tete-a-tete this afternoon over in New Jersey.  No matter what, we were happy to see that the Sox have earned at least a respectable (though meaningless) split, lifted again by Big Papi and his 49th home run.  Tonight, if he plays, Papi will take his hacks at the club record of 50, set by Jimmy Foxx, and it would be a bright spot in an otherwise dark September.  Joe Torre looks to trot out Ron Villone again, hopefully turning a reliable regular season reliever into post-season chopped liver.  And, we suppose Derek Jeter will be playing, trying to extend his overhyped, garden-variety hitting streak: talk to us when he gets closer to Nomar’s career high, ok?

Use this as your game thread to track the Sox and Yanks’ nightcap.

  • Pats up 23-0 pending a PAT. If they hold on, and the Sox can sweep tonight, tomorrow’s Globe will be a fun read.

    SF September 17, 2006, 6:07 pm
  • Or taking 3 out of 4, although last nights loss was very forgettable…

    Tom sf September 17, 2006, 6:13 pm
  • Sweep as in sweep the doubleheader.

    SF September 17, 2006, 6:15 pm
  • SF is in full snark mode…. :)
How weird is it that I root for the Pats? What’s wrong with me?!
    (Pats and Giants, actually)

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 6:29 pm
  • That would be a stick in the eye if Papi hit his 50th (or more.. fear) in the second game after the Yankee fans incessant (and essentially non-consequential) riding of the big man each at-bat. Stop poking the bear.
On noble efforts: one more win and the Sox are guaranteed to finish at least .500 on the season.

    attackgerbil September 17, 2006, 6:44 pm
  • What I don’t get is why they keep pitching to him. Four fingers and move on!
    On your last note, Gerb….Ouch!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 6:46 pm
  • Meanwhile, the Pats are doing their best Eagles right now. Tom Brady seriously looks like he was out at Marquee with Jeets last night, stayed out just a little too late. Truly horrible effort from the QB today.

    SF September 17, 2006, 6:51 pm
  • Not so sure on that SF…The receivers are not doing all that well.
The Pats should keep running Maroney and Dillon down the Jeets throat.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 6:56 pm
  • You take away two terrible tackling sessions from the Pats and this is still not a game. The DB’s should be forced to watch hours of tackling, preferrebly from Adam Sandler and get a case of ‘tacklin fuel’

    Rob September 17, 2006, 6:58 pm
  • Jeez, to me it looks like Brady is overthrowing, underthrowing, missing targets. On two quick out patterns he chucked it at least five feet from his receiver, and the interception in the fourth quarter was a bad play call and a worse throw. He’s been unimpressive today, even when the Pats were way up he looked poor I thought.

    SF September 17, 2006, 6:58 pm
  • I agree…some of that is from having the new recivers in the offense.
Caldwell a throw away, Gabriel who only had 35 catches last year and Jackson missed most of the preseason.
I think that before the season is over the Pats may miss Branch even more.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:00 pm
  • He also badly underthrew Ben Watson wide open in the end zone earlier in the game, leading to a field goal as opposed to a touchdown, if I remember correctly.

    SF September 17, 2006, 7:00 pm
  • This has been a good drive, though, at a key time. NO TURNOVERS.

    SF September 17, 2006, 7:01 pm
  • That underthrow was also tipped by a leaping Jet.
The offense was clicking better in the game when Watson and Graham were the primary targets. It seems they are ot using the play action all that much and with those two running backs that would be a great play to use.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:02 pm
  • Had it not been an underthrow, it would not have been tipped.
I love the RB tandem. Maroney sure can dart side-to-side.

    SF September 17, 2006, 7:03 pm
  • That was like the fourth flag thrown in the game with no penalty called.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:03 pm
  • Don’t want to jinx him, but Brady has made some darn good throws on this drive. That low-and-outsider to Brown on third down was perfect – defender couldn’t possible touch it, up to Brown to reel it in. Good stuff.

    SF September 17, 2006, 7:05 pm
  • Brady has done a Jekyll and Hyde thing today. The Jets were so bad early in the game the lulled NE into some dumb plays.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:07 pm
  • Nice run by Dillon…

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:09 pm
  • Crap, he looks hurt.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:09 pm
  • Phew – looks like Dillon might be ok – walking off without a limp.
Kick a FG and be done with it.

    SF September 17, 2006, 7:10 pm
  • The Jets’ run defense is nonexistent, eh?..

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 7:12 pm
  • The Jets DL is to small

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:13 pm
  • Oops…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 7:13 pm
  • Oy, FG blocked. Ugh. Gostkowski misses his first clutch shot. I am sure Ron Borges is champing at the bit for a Jets comeback so he can unjustly savage Belichik.

    SF September 17, 2006, 7:14 pm
  • Dammit….I was thinking to myself that I was thankfull that the Pats do not have the kicker from BC (Ohliger) who missed 2 PATs yesterday.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:14 pm
  • Isn’t time that Pennington hurts himself again?

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:15 pm
  • Rob: that’s not nice.
Remind me again, why is Vinatieri kicking for the Colts this season?

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 7:16 pm
  • I like that play…keep throwing it to the middle of the field.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:16 pm
  • He wanted more money than what the Pats were willing to pay.
I didi not ask for someone to hurt Pennington, He just finds small ways to hurt himself on occassion. The guy raises his arms in the air on plays that he should just get up and move to the next one.

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:17 pm
  • Game….
    Nice pick by Harrison/Bruschi

    Rob September 17, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • Pennington is more fragile than Matt Clement in a two-on, two-out jam.
Phew. That was unnecessarily tight. Go Sox!!!

    SF September 17, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • Over! That was unnecessarily exciting….

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • Oh, and since there’s apparently a baseball game later tonight, the Yanks lineup:
    Melky Cabrera LF
    Derek Jeter SS
    Bobby Abreu RF
    Jason Giambi 1B
    Jorge Posada C
    Robinson Cano DH
    Bernie Williams CF
    Nick Green 3B
    Miguel Cairo 2B

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • And the Sox:
    Coco Crisp CF
    Mark Loretta 2B
    David Ortiz DH
    Mike Lowell 3B
    Trot Nixon RF
    Jason Varitek C
    David Murphy LF
    Dustin Pedroia SS
    Carlos Pena 1B

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 7:23 pm
  • Jon Miller and Joe Morgan calling for ESPN tonight.

    attackgerbil September 17, 2006, 8:06 pm
  • Joe Morgan is lining up behind Jeter on the MVP debate.
Morgan: “..and we have to wait til the season is over before getting around to making a decision.”
Um, yeah, even though you just completely said something else, Joe.

    attackgerbil September 17, 2006, 8:08 pm
  • I don’t hear much chanting with Ortiz up this time.

    attackgerbil September 17, 2006, 8:13 pm
  • 1-2-3 for Moose in the first.

    attackgerbil September 17, 2006, 8:14 pm
  • Ack! AGAIN with the Ortiz-gate…..Stoooop!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:16 pm
  • ESPN (paraphrased): Ortiz and Jeter have no issues with each other. ESPN (paraphrased): We’ll still talk about it at every opportunity.

    attackgerbil September 17, 2006, 8:17 pm
  • Jeter hits a comebacker in his first PA.

    attackgerbil September 17, 2006, 8:19 pm
  • YM (paraphrased): ESPN sucks!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • How nice would it be to see Jason show some power here. I afraid his wrist in an impediment more than the organization is letting on.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:24 pm
  • A walk and an HBP with 2 outs: what a rally!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:25 pm
  • Off the Armor.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:25 pm
  • It’s too early in the game for sarcasm YM. =)

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:25 pm
  • Hip hip Jorge delivers! It IS a rally!!!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:26 pm
  • First blood drawn by Yanks. =)

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:26 pm
  • Sorry BY78, I guess SF’s earlier snarkiness rubbed off ;-)

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • Robby strands two. Sigh…who does this guy think he is? Wormkiller Wang?

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • Dude, Gator’s ’78 pitching line is INSANE.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:33 pm
  • I just was writing how Moose is having trouble w/his command tonite, then HillBilly Trot did that. My point exactly.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:35 pm
  • Attaboy, Trotsky.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • Hmm.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • Hudson: freakin’ Commie ;-)

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • I didn’t know Moose had the 5th best winning % over the last 50 years. That’s pretty cool, considering the people ahead of him and others who pitched in that period…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • If I’m a Commie then your G.M.’s name is George Stalinbrenner!

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • Mucus-ina has K’d 3 batters but has thrown 38 pitches through 2 and is down a run.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • Yet, the Itai starts to throw accurately to the next 3 batters. Good. Speaking of Italians, did any of you get to enjoy the St. Gennaro Festival in Little Italy this weeekend? If I wasn’t here in the land of sunshine and overpriced homes I’d be there in a second having sausage, peppers, and onions on roll w/ some marinara smothering it.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • ….He’s not the GM….
    But yeah, no argument there!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • Graybeard the Pirate strikes again, and Nick Green moves him over.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 8:47 pm
  • Going next weekend, BY78.
By the way, has Bernie been reading blogs bitching about his righty/lefty splits? He seems to be hitting much better from the left side the last few games….

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:47 pm
  • Double, sac bunt, sac fly. This smallball crap *does* work! Amazing…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:52 pm
  • Cairo drives in the tying run AND he robs Carlos Pena. The man is a superhero!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • To listen to the announcers, Ortiz is entitled to a different strike zone than everyone else…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:01 pm
  • Ha Ha! Dumb CoCo stayed put.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:02 pm
  • ::hyperventilates::

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • Strike this guy out Moose! I just asked my wife if she other heard a Cuban name like Lowell. YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • WOW! That was a Houdini job by Moose…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • “she, or other Cubans”

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:07 pm
  • If Jarvis does not get rocked around soon…

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:08 pm
  • And?

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:08 pm
  • Pfft. Miller sounds so gleeful about Jeter’s 0-2. That SOB…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:09 pm
  • Pena just got back his robbed base hit by robbing Bobby.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:12 pm
  • Jarvis has an 8.87 ERA. It is only a matter of time, especially with the NY ma$her lineup, before the runs start pouring in.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 9:16 pm
  • Sorry YM; no, never. It could be a changed name from some name that was to be begin with. Lowell was quoted as saying he hopes Castro dies during his recent surgery. (My wife hope he dies too). Lowell is Puerto Rican, with parents originally from Cuba, but Lowell sound real Gringo.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:16 pm
  • I wish could selectively mute one of the announcers in the booth….

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • LOL. Ma$her, touche Hudson.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • Sorry for my horrible grammar during this thread, I’m grilling steaks and making Potatoes au Gratin while jumping in and out, and posting a comment here and there.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • Moosh pitch count nears 70. Looks like a short night for Mr. 14 wins.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 9:23 pm
  • Don’t ruin your dinner on our account, BY!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:23 pm
  • If I never see that stupid Dive into the Stands play again, it will be still be too soon.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:30 pm
  • If I never see *any* play except that Dive Into Second Base play again (you know the one), I will die smiling.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 9:36 pm
  • Shuddup.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:41 pm
  • YES, Papi’s out!!!!!!!!!! I’ve got a full Sunday spread set up in living room w/the TV center stage, I’ve got the laptop next to me, and a nice glass of red to go with these strips, I’m set. Thank god my wife loves watching the Yanks.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • You Yankee fans can gloat for now, but I still have Dave Effing Roberts…
Anyway, back to the game… from the looks of things, Big Papi has decided to just try to hit home runs for the remainder of this year.
One more inning of Mussina, tops.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • If only an unfortunate accident happened in the booth right about now…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • Morgan and Miller are torture right now. I’m suffering with you YM.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:47 pm
  • Hudson, Jarvis is pitching legit right now. You’ve might have got a nice start out of a shit pitcher right

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • It’s like the game isn’t even happening with those two idiots…I want Kaat!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:50 pm
  • As the saying goes, bloodyank, even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 9:51 pm
  • When I go to hell I’ll be forced to listen to Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver for eternity.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • LOL. Aaron Small the entire of 2005 comes to mind.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • No way Hudson, replace Morgan w/ Michael Kay. Then you’ll really be in eternal damnation.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Or Leiter with that one awesome start against the Sox…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • And add John Sterling.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:55 pm
  • Awww….bye bye Moose. No win #15…Or maybe not! Weird.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 9:58 pm
  • Varitek attempting to bring his season average up to .250 by oct.

    walein September 17, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • Moose has been clutch tonight. Not dominant, but clutch. Wish I could say the same about our vaunted lineup.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:02 pm
  • That’s cold Walein. =) Jeet’s is safe!!

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:05 pm
  • Some home field advantage! Change it to a single, please?
1st and 3rd, no outs. They’d better score at least one.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • God, Abreu is nice addition, isn’t he? He’s gonna be fun to watch next season.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • Jarvis is going to get tagged right here I’m calling it.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:08 pm
  • EDSP lurking…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:08 pm
  • Or maybe not. His wrist has to be f’d up.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • YES!!!!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:11 pm

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:12 pm

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:14 pm
  • Bye bye, Cy Jarvis.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:15 pm
  • Joe Morgan in his own universe here; claims Murphy would not have reached the ball AT ALL if he hadn’t dove for the catch. Nevermind the replay which made it clear that he would have been in position.
But nevermind the facts. Bernie IBB’ed.

    YF September 17, 2006, 10:15 pm
  • I love this guy, I’m sorry. Go ahead Tito, go ahead and find some guy to match up with an andrenalin filled Matsui who just got a standing O for pinch hitting.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:16 pm
  • DJ will have another hack at the streak in the bottom of the 8th…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:20 pm
  • Ahem.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:22 pm
  • Too bad. I wanted some Hideki heroics.

    bloodyank78 September 17, 2006, 10:23 pm
  • That was sweet.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • EDSP looking a little shaky.

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • How is it that Cairo is having the best ABs of the team?

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • Sp the streak ends on a hard grounder to first? Oh well…..

    YF September 17, 2006, 10:45 pm
  • A nice run while it lasted, for sure. He can start another one tomorrow!

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 10:49 pm
  • Why not bunt Lowell?

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 11:00 pm
  • And that was some seriously un-clutch baserunning by Ortiz…

    yankeemonkey September 17, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • gameday says on field delay?

    z118 September 17, 2006, 11:41 pm
  • A-Rod is clutch. ;^))

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 11:52 pm
  • Whaddya know, taking a game from the Spankees in a close, late game feels good even if it’s utterly meaningless.

    Hudson September 17, 2006, 11:54 pm
  • the yankees looked bad all weekend, they are gonna get beat in the playoffs again if they don’t shape up.
