Run for Your Lives! Giant Torch-Bearing Women to Invade New York!!!

MLB, in conjunction with licensee Forever Collectibles, will station a series of 42 MLB-decorated Statue of Liberty replicas standing eight and a half feet tall around the city. Each statue will be uniquely decorated with bold graphics featuring each of the 30 MLB Clubs, the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, American League, National League, four All-Star statues and statues commemorating the final season of Yankee and Shea Stadium [sic].

This from an MLB press release, reprinted by Peter Abraham. The All-Star Game celebration will also feature a parade up Sixth Avenue. Better than the cows?

Should be noted that Albert Spalding, in his great luxury suite in the sky, is smiling. Credit Bud Selig for taking the great impresario’s injunction to wrap the game in the flag to a whole new and amazingly literal level.

  • Yeah, that’s just asking for trouble… They better get some security for that thing.

It’s New York, none of the statues will last 48 hours.
I think they should make these things like Russian dolls – when the outer layer is defiled, presto, a new figurine! The Sox one could start with Big Papi and end with a tiny life-size Dustin Pedroia.

  • When I interned in DC back in ’04, they were doing this with donkeys and elephants, which I just loved. Kept taking pictures of them… Where I live now is introducing sheep to the street corners (Wool and Mohair Capital of the World, after all). It’s cool, fun and a great way to freshen up a space. Bravo.

  • RE: Russian Dolls (Matryoshkas)
After 2004, my soon to be wife’s parents took at trip to Russia. They were in some market and came across a vendor selling Matryoshkas and found one commemorating the 2004 Red Sox world series, so of course they picked it up for me. It’s easily one of my favorite Red Sox pieces now. I’m certain it’s not MLB approved merch. It only features about 10 of the players, Big Papi being the outer layer, followed by Schill, Manny, on and on. What I found really funny about it is that Damon was the last layer, the tiniest of them all.

  • That’s too funny YF, ok, now I have to get pictures.
Funny add on to the story of mine, the evening following that shopping trip the future in-laws were heading to a Vodka and Caviar tasting bar, they ran out of time shopping and didn’t have time to go back to the hotel and drop off their packages. After about three hours tasting Vodka and Caviar they became a little forgetful, and my 2004 Red Sox Matryoshka was left behind in a blur. Luckily it was kept safe by the employees for them to return the next day and retrieve it.
