Seattle’s Best Coffee: Yanks-M’s Gamer I

Good times, these, but we can forgive our Bombers if they need a little pick-me-up on the way in to Safeco this evening after the marathon that was the BMII. We suggest a stop in at Zeitgeist, the tops in a town that knows from its java, and conveniently located just a few blocks from the ballpark, on South Jackson. Lattes all around for the boys, and a green tea for the skipper. A double shot for Jeff Karstens, who starts his first game in the bigs. He goes against Cha Seung Baek of the M’s, who is doing the same. Remember to tip that barrista—Sidney Ponson has bills! Comment on the action here.

  • After the emotion and duration of the last five games, I am concerned it is exactly the sort of situation that can lead to an emotional crash. Though the Yanks appeared to be capable of handling whatever the Sox were going to bring to the table, there is much baseball left to play, and I must wonder what taxation all that baseball over the span combined with a flight to the west coast will be levied on the rotation and the lineup.
After reading much of the pontificating about the significance of the series against Boston, there are two things that weigh heavy on my mind, despite a 6.5 game lead in the east. Number one: Moose has a strained groin. Number two: Moose has a strained groin.
Seattle is desperate for a victory, and there’s an adage about wounded animals. The Yanks have three in Seattle, and then on to three against the dreaded Halos. They have our boys number it seems.
I watch this game in sincere interest as we get back to the business of non-Yanks/Sawx ball and back to the fact there are plenty of games that mean plenty. I may be at tomorrow’s game, and I will definitely be at Thursday’s game. Is it presumptuous to want to start shooting for those Tigers and the home-field advantage? NY plays Detroit after a day’s layoff after facing Anaheim.
Maybe we would rather play our games in hostile territory?

  • I am glad Derek has a day of rest in the field, but Nick Green has to start showing something at the plate. I can’t believe I’m pining for Miguel Cairo.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 9:00 pm
  • Edit: Robbie has a day of rest. I thought Torre said he was going to spell Jeter tonight?

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 9:06 pm
  • Okay.. that was last night. Gosh, I am tired.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 9:07 pm
  • I guess Jeter’s turn at DH yesterday was the day off. What, you don’t trust Nick the stick to do the job? He did hit that double and scored the winning run yesterday…

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • gerb: what i worry about, more than anything, is jorge. the other day at fenway, there was a play at the plate and i said to sf, the yanks should just cede home on any play where collision is possible, because the prospect of an injury to jorge isn’t worth a run, no matter the game. sal fasano is a lousy backup. put in the starting role….ack….a horrible thought. and there’s basically nothing cashman would be able to do at this point to bring in useful help. so pray for jorge’s health.

    YF August 22, 2006, 9:28 pm
  • Nick, thanks for getting that hit last night. I didn’t mean disrespect. But you are still 15 for 81. And I am not a patient man.
That said, your glove is pretty slick.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 9:30 pm
  • YF: Excellent point. It’s a fragile situation.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 9:35 pm
  • Man, I hate those late-starting games…Don’t think I’ll be able to stay up to see the first pitch, let alone the whole game.
Gerb, you’re absolutely right about an emotional letdown. Lest we forget, Yanks swept the Sox in ’04, then promptly went and got swept themselves, by the Mets. I fully expect them to lose tonight, what with the exhaustion and the fact they’ll be facing a rookie-ish pitcher (=kryptonite). All things considered, a 3-3 record after this sojourn would be pretty good.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • Apropos of nothing, Carlos Beltran just hit a walkoff shot against the Cardinals, out-Pujolsing Pujols (2 HR, 7 RBI). Yep, I’d say Mets are pretty much a lock for the WS.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 9:51 pm
  • JD falls behind 0-2 to start the game, then lines a single to center.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:09 pm
  • Damon just unstoppable right now.
Just reminding everyone that a certain propreitor of this blogspace, and not SF, picked a Subway Series before this season started…..Just sayin’…

    YF August 22, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • Jeets advances Johnny to second with a groundout. Looked awfully close at first base….

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • Abreu with a typical Abreu AB….5 pitches and counting.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:13 pm
  • Bobby falls behind 0-2, then works the count full. The payoff is a changeup that Bobby swung through for the 2nd out. Bummer.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:14 pm
  • Just reminding everyone that a certain proprietor of this webspace (not YF) has gotten 50% of the last two World Series champs correct before the season even started…

    SF August 22, 2006, 10:19 pm
  • Giambi with an epic 12 pitch AB finally grounds out to end the inning…
Three cheers for Jeff Karstens who’s set to make his MLB debut!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:21 pm
  • Away to Ichiro bal one. Fouled off third. The 1-1 is a change slapped foul towards first.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • Ichiro fouls another, then a pop to left for the first out.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • And he retires Ichiro on a fly ball to Melky for his first ML out!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:25 pm
  • First ML walk! J-Kar looks a little nervous out there, doesn’t he…

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:26 pm
  • That is gone.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • First ML home run!!! That should settle him down nicely :-)

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • Jeff Karstens: don’t get used to that big league meal money.

    YF August 22, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • Beltre clobbered that one.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • YF:
    Play nice with the rook!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • Abreu settles under Sexon’s high pop. Two away.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • Sexson flies out to Abreu for the second out.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • Ibanez doubles to left.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:31 pm
  • They’re getting good swings off him.
In all honesty, M’s lost 11 coming in. Something’s gotta give…

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:32 pm
  • Green reels in a pop out from Lopez to end the inning.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:33 pm
  • Karstens’ ERA after 1 inning: 18.00. Ouchies. Hopefully he’ll get it down a bit before this night is over…

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:36 pm
  • are you loonies going to live blog this whole damn game?!

    greggy August 22, 2006, 10:37 pm
  • Strike one to Arod looking. Cut on a low pitch for 0-1. In the dirt for a bal. The 1-2 is high. it’s 2-2 top of two: got ARod swinging on a slider away.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:37 pm
  • Nice to see Seattle fans still remember Arod.
Arod obliges with a swinging K.
I hate soft-tossing rookie pitchers. Why can’t Yanks ever hit them?

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:37 pm
  • Greggy: yes.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • Greggy:
Not I….I’ve got to get up early for work. Sigh.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • Bernie takes a strike, the a low pitch. The next is way in and low. the 2-1 is on the handle up first; broken bat, end of inning.

    attackgerbil August 22, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • OK…I’ll give them (NYY) 1 turn through the batting order to get used to the rook. After that…grrrr.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:43 pm
  • 1.1 innings pitched, 3 XBH. Ick.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:44 pm
  • Halos take a 1-0 lead on BoSox…

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:46 pm
  • Wow, great job by J-Kar: 1st and 3rd with one out and he gets out of it. Hopefully this should give him a little bit of confidence for the rest of the game…

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:52 pm
  • karsten! recovering like a champ.
welcome to the yf thread greggy. we don’t fold early here–unlike the sox!

    YF August 22, 2006, 10:53 pm
  • Who’d be the long man for the Yanks tonight should they need one? Probably Villone provided his arm doesn’t fall off as he warms up?

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:55 pm
  • OK, Robbie’s had enough of a day off. Get his ass in there!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:57 pm
  • Johnny Damon en fuego!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 10:59 pm
  • ABREU!!!!!!! Good time to rediscover that HR swing!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:01 pm
  • Abreuuuuuuuuuu!
    What were the Phillies thinking?

    YF August 22, 2006, 11:02 pm
  • ladies and gentlemen, Bobby Abreu: the best mid-season acquisition maybe ever!

    Nick-YF August 22, 2006, 11:02 pm
  • Let’s see how the kid does with a lead.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:04 pm
  • Well, the answer is not so well. Tie game.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:07 pm
  • Ack.

    YF August 22, 2006, 11:07 pm
  • ‘s OK, I have a feeling Arod will do something here.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:11 pm
  • And by something, I meant strike out looking. Sooth!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:13 pm
  • Posada rung up swinging….sheesh.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:14 pm
  • OK, I’m off to bed. Here’s hoping Yanks still have runs left in those bats!
    ‘night all.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:17 pm
  • HR for Alex: 5-3. Good August numbers for Alex, as shown on WasWatching.

    YF August 22, 2006, 11:49 pm
  • (still awake)
Alex!!!!! Absolute BOMB to give Yanks the lead 5-3. Clearly I was just off by one AB when I said he’d do something…

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:50 pm
  • A Rod unclutche sone over the wall! Yankees lead 5-3. Bernie follows it up with a new single off his 5th inning album.

    walein August 22, 2006, 11:51 pm
  • Actually, Posada singled and Bernie walked.

    walein August 22, 2006, 11:53 pm
  • That was Posada with the single…Bernie BB. Wow, the crappy starting pitcher departs and the bats wake up. Nice!

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:53 pm
  • Wouldn’t this be the perfect time to PH Cano? Has Torre taken lessons at the Francona school of management??

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:56 pm
  • Wasted opportunity to add to the lead…Sigh.

    yankeemonkey August 22, 2006, 11:59 pm
  • Hmm…is Jaret Wright the long man tonight?

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:05 am
  • OK, this is ridiculous. Kid’s at 90 pitches. After a grounder barely sneaks through the infield for a 2-out single, Joe lets the kid pitch to Broussard and pulls him in the middle of the AB!!!
Um, Joe, if you’re trying to raise the kid’s confidence, this ain’t the way to do it.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:09 am
  • So let’s see. Myers comes in with a 2-0 count on Broussard. Seattle sends up a righty PH. Myers intentionally walks the PH. Jaret Wright is coming into the game.
    *shakes head*

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:12 am
  • Wow, has Jaret Wright found his niche? Gets a first-pitch pop-up to end the inning…Maybe he really should be in the pen, he threw a clean inning in Boston too, doesn’t seem to have that strike-zone phobia.
Definitely interesting possibility, especially for the playoffs.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:14 am
  • Wow, Beltre is really good at third. That was almost a spectacular play.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:23 am
  • Sox tie it up top 7. 3 all in California’s Los Angeles city of Anaheim.

    YFinBeantown August 23, 2006, 12:26 am
  • hip hip
    damn it.

    YFinBeantown August 23, 2006, 12:27 am
  • Bases loaded with 1 out and he bangs into a DP. Meh. Not clutch, Jorge, not clutch.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:28 am
  • Uh-oh. Jaret the Reliever is starting to look more like Jaret the Starter.

    YFinBeantown August 23, 2006, 12:32 am
  • Urrrgh. Mayhap I spake too soon.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:32 am
  • Son of a……!!!

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:35 am
  • Awwww….crap. Tie game.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:40 am
  • Villone is running on fumes right now, it’s obvious. He needs like a week off to recuperate.
A pop up ends the inning, 5-5 going to the 8th. Whose throwing day is it tomorrow? We might need another long man…

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:43 am
  • Great. Why does Joe insist on making Melky bunt? Ugh. Just…ugh.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:49 am
  • Melky caught stealing to end the inning. Actually not a bad play, Damon was 1-2 in the count, this way he gets to lead off the next inning.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:56 am
  • Villone having trouble throwing strikes. Joe, you’re killing him.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 12:59 am
  • Hargrove is managing this game like it’s game 7 of the World Series. You’d almost think Seattle was a contender.
Anyway, Villone gets himself in trouble by walking the leadoff hitter but eventually gets out of it. We’re still tied going into the 9th…

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 1:09 am
  • Blah. This game hasn’t been particularly slow but it just seems to be dragging on and on….

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 1:21 am
  • Arod up in a tie game with 2 on and 2 out. A chance…

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 1:23 am
  • Arod strikes out to end the inning. Will the papers even remember his HR tomorrow?

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 1:25 am
  • Well, that’s that. 6-5 M’s on a walkoff by Beltre. I can’t..CANNOT believe Joe left Villone in there. This one’s on Joe, completely.
Ah well, we’ll get ’em tomorrow.

    yankeemonkey August 23, 2006, 1:33 am
